the command, absolutely dripping in dry, agonizing boldness, seems to seep into the air around absinthe. there's a certain coldness to the voice that’s familiar. she doesnt remember how, doesnt remember why, but it ignites her deeply. a shiver, almost imperceptible, racks her spine as she turns around—it's better not to keep a man of such obvious importance waiting. her business here in oldale—a rather banal task—can wait.[break][break]

he looks like the devil. beautiful, but twisted beyond recognition by some grueling disease of the spirit. she knows the type instinctively; she sees it in the mirror every day.[break][break]

it's a small effort to paste a wry smirk along her lips, even if the effect is stunted by that strange mask of hers.[break][break]

"does yelling into the sky often work for you?" she says, cocking her hip, confident as she regards him. it's such an obvious ploy for attention, the question barely serves any purpose at all. any scientist in wartime knows to keep their heads down. absinthe is not so wise. "you are in luck, though. i have a doctorate."[break][break]

and, she's just insane enough to approach a man yelling into the ether about a need for scientists.[break][break]

the man strikes her as more of a heretic than a miracle worker, but iconoclasts are blind to their own nature as a requirement.[break][break]

and, just as a false prophet might, he speaks in tongues, forming words that take moments to settle fully into absinthe's consciousness. drawing out potential. ancient sunlight. she squints a moment, thoughtful, curious, but unsurprised. he talks as if he means alchemy; transformation, change.[break][break]

it seems this man—or perhaps the patron—has dreams of challenging entropy itself. to unearth the unnatural potential of an anomaly, one that shines in defiance of god.[break][break]

well, isn't that just so utterly delicious? an arrogant goal worthy of only the most brilliant or the most unhinged of minds.[break][break]

as brash and presumptuous her new client might be, he earns the slightest, secret smile behind her mask. such passion cannot be denied, especially not by a practitioner of science. her fingers dance, a soft flourish atop the fabric of her coat that suggests readiness, preparation. she understands his plight—afterall, her very own paradox pokemon could benefit from the same thing.[break][break]

"an ambitious goal," she hums. "perhaps stupid. but tempting."[break][break]

she pauses, fingers stilling. "and you require the expertise of a scientist who may synthesize something that will achieve this, yes?" absinthe's breath ghosts across the interior surface of her mask.[break][break]

"i am a chemist and biologist. this task is in my wheelhouse, for the right price."
