In a perfect world, Aurelie would never need to fight for her life. Never need to know not only how to defend herself but also how to crush and overpower anyone who dared oppose her. And she would never end up looking back with regret on an offer to learn how to do just that.

But this was far from a perfect world. This was a world in which Rocket had lost their hold on Sootopolis, and Aurelie had never felt more clueless or useless than during the battle against the combined forces of Kyogre and the League. In the aftermath, she found herself remembering the SPECTRA Gauntlet event that at the time had seemed so abstract and hypothetical and now seemed in vital, deadly earnest.

And she remembered the words of one of the underbosses afterward, cool and aloof, yet at the same time strangely almost generous:

"you had my bet to win the whole thing, lefevre, and though you disappointed this time, i know you will not take this loss lightly. would you like my help to ensure as much?"

Feeling like a fool, Aurelie reached out to Underboss Beckett asking if he still wanted to help her. He probably receives a dozen requests like this every day, she thought. Well, if he laughs at it and puts it in his trashcan, that's not the worst thing that can happen.

Now, in the Rocket sub, she glanced speculatively down the corridors of the north wing as she passed by on an errand to deliver a fresh supply of combat knives to the training facilities. Her Tinkaton padded along beside her, carrying one of the heavy cases. Seeing no one, Aurelie shrugged and continued on toward the east wing.

Even without his help, maybe I can practice on my own. Train and study and think about fighting. Not that she was entirely sure how, but now that she was here, it seemed opportune enough.
