Behind the shopping center in which the Iron Lady Forge is located, each store or building is allotted a grassy, modestly-sized courtyard that can be used for storage, gardening, and outdoor entertainment. High wooden fences with padlocked gates keep the courtyards separate from one another. In her courtyard, Aurelie has established a healthy, lovingly tended backyard vegetable garden.

Nourished by rich, fertile soil, several different varieties of herbs and vegetables are arranged in neat, organized rows. Small paths are laid out between each row, carefully kept free of encroaching weeds and pests. A few berry trees provide welcome shade for both the garden and the wide expanse of grass that stretches beyond toward the fence.

GARDEN ATTENDANT

An EXCADRILL tends to the health of the soil and plants in the garden, tilling the earth and preparing it for the cultivation of berries and vegetables. His ROTOTILLER ability helps loosen and aerate the soil, allowing air and water to permeate. This encourages seeds to germinate, helps roots to grow and spread, controls weed growth, and integrates fertilizers into the earth.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie awoke to the clatter of plastic bins and the clinking of metal outside and sleepily thought it must be the recycling collection truck coming a little earlier in the morning than it usually did. She rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. The metallic clinking and ringing only intensified, though, and somewhere in her half-awake mind, Aurelie thought, Wait a minute, the recycling truck usually comes on Tuesday, and it's Thursday today. What's going on?

It was this thought that prompted Aurelie to climb out of bed and hurry over to the window overlooking the garden. When she saw the garden gate hanging ajar and someone—or something—rummaging through the recycling and scrap metal bins, Aurelie growled and reached for the nearest knife and Poke Ball. When she ran down the stairs and outside into her garden, though, she discovered that the small but determined figure in her garden wasn't a person at all. It was a Pokemon!

The small, almost babyish-looking figure with bright pink skin didn't seem to hear Aurelie approaching, too engrossed in pulling iron and steel rods from the scrap metal bin. A look of comprehension crossed Aurelie's face. She'd heard of these Pokemon! Known as Tinkatinks, they would construct a hammer with their own hands, using iron scraps, to use in fighting and self-defense.

Sure enough, Aurelie saw the trademark hammer beside the Tinkatink's feet, looking half-finished but remarkably sturdy. Belatedly remembering she hadn't locked her garden gate last night, Aurelie figured that this Tinkatink must have broken in to steal berries and then realized she could also make use of Aurelie's scrap metal to reinforce her hammer. A warm fellow feeling rushed through her at the sight of the resourceful female metalsmith Pokemon.

She didn't want to fight or harm the Tinkatink, but she couldn't help admiring the Pokemon's skills. The red-haired smith eyed the hammer again approvingly, appreciating how well it had been put together out of scraps without special equipment or tools. She could use a Pokemon with those skills to work with her in her forge, and in return, she'd provide the Tinkatink a life with plentiful berries, shelter, and safety from anyone who'd mess with her or her hammer. Pressing her lips together, Aurelie released her Delphox from the Poke Ball and nodded to the Tinkatink.

"Just use HYPNOSIS, please. I don't want to hurt or upset it," Aurelie instructed the Delphox.

Nodding in acquiescence, the Delphox waved its wand-like stick in the air and sent waves of soporific psychic energy toward the Tinkatink. The pink Pokemon quickly slumped to the ground, fast asleep. With a sigh of relief, Aurelie lightly threw another empty Poke Ball toward the Tinkatink's recumbent form, hoping to capture her peacefully—and then to get to work tidying up the bins and berries that the Tinkatink had jumbled up this morning.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]At first, when she found slugs and other pests in her vegetable garden, Aurelie had simply crushed them without a second thought. Nowadays, though, it seemed ruthless and cruel to kill creatures who were just trying to survive. Instead, she began putting them into a plastic bag and tipping out the bag onto the other side of the courtyard fence.

After doing so this time, Aurelie had absentmindedly left the fence gate unlatched. She only realized it when she unexpectedly heard soft footsteps in the soil next to her. Thinking it was a burglar or attacker, she swung around and in the same motion pulled a knife from her pocket.

To her shock, the knife blade clanged loudly and uselessly off the shining steel shell of a Duraludon as it bent to nibble at some low-hanging berries. The noise attracted the attention of her Excadrill in the next plant bed over. As the Excadrill hurried toward them, Aurelie couldn't help eyeing the polished metal of the Duraludon's body with undisguised fascination.

I want to capture it, not defeat it, she realized. Imagine what I could learn from watching it and studying its body!

"METAL CLAW, please, Pierre," she instructed the Excadrill. As he surged forward obligingly, Aurelie unobtrusively readied a Pokeball. Hopefully, with a few more successful hits, the Duraludon would be weakened enough that she could capture it and claim it for her own.

To Aurelie's dismay, one of the many, many casualties of the Primal Kyogre's madness and resulting flood of biblical proportions was her own vegetable garden in Lilycove. All her carefully planted rows of cauliflower, carrots, and potatoes were now a mess of leaves and mud. Some of her berry trees had survived, though no berries hung from the branches.

Her bedraggled Excadrill clicked his claws forlornly, as if stricken with the same regret and self-reproach that she felt. She reached out and patted his head gently.

"I guess there's nothing for us to do but try to clean it up," the redhead said aloud to her Pokemon, sighing. "And rebuild. Just like everyone else is doing everywhere else, thanks to that damned Kyogre."

It took an immense effort of will for Aurelie not to descend back into the same never-ending spiral of what-might-have-beens and if-only-we-could-haves that she'd been tormenting herself with for days. She'd never know what would've happened if Rocket and the League teamed up to stop Kyogre before it reached the Cave of Origin. She had all kinds of guesses but no real answers.

So, instead of spiraling back into that depressing morass, she bent down and got to work with digging, shoveling, scrubbing, and cleaning up. She and her Excadrill were so preoccupied that it took them both a few moments to realize they weren't alone in the garden.

When Aurelie felt a sudden gust of heat, she looked up and started in surprise to see a Scovillain lurking at the edge of the fence. Fire still seeped from the corners of its two mouths, even though the Pokemon looked more startled than aggressive. Like them, it looked taken aback by the flooded garden.

Aurelie sighed and held up her hands placatingly. "Look. We won't fight you. But there's nothing here for you to steal here. No berries, no food, nothing. I'm sorry."

Then, struck with sudden inspiration, she held out the one lone berry she'd plucked off the highest branch of the trees surrounding her vegetable garden. In the other, she held out a Pokeball. Then, she just shrugged.

"If you want to help us, though, you'd be a big help. Will you consider it? We'll get this garden up and running even faster with your help, and then you can have as many berries as you want. And plenty of things to burn up and fight too, if you want!"
