It was near that time of the year again.[break][break]

Wild rumors were flying around Fortree of haunted, abandoned tree houses, and then there were sightings of floating specters, people with bloodied faces that had no feet, or were missing an eyeball. These typical kinds of things.[break][break]

If there was something Alexei didn’t want to admit it was this fact—he absolutely didn’t like this time of the year. Was he superstitious? It was possible.[break][break]

The mere mention of Ghost-types already set him on edge. The only one he could reasonably tolerate was the Litwick line, and that was because they were from Unova. But he’d somehow managed to be in possession of a Sableye, and this one loved to cackle and hide in his shadow.[break][break]

Just for that he’d kept Loki in his Dusk Ball, out of sight and out of mind.[break][break]

And now that the rumors were flying thick and fast, they’d asked him to investigate one of the older tree houses in an older part of the city—allegedly someone had claimed to see the ghost of their dead Pokémon wandering around the area, looking to complete unfinished business.[break][break]

And by gods, he hated it when ‘ghosts’ and ‘unfinished business’ were in the same sentence.[break][break]

It was more than enough to make his skin crawl.[break][break]

Making sure he had enough decent firepower to accompany him as he set out to aforementioned location, he hoped that this would end quickly and he could return to the safety of his apartment, out of sight and out of mind of these creepy crawly beings…

She had heard about the horrible rumors going around in her old hometown. It had been a while since she'd properly visited, and to visit under these disastrous circumstances wasn't exactly.. ideal.

Regardless, she was here to see what, if anything, she could do about the terrors that had been happening. She'd had her fair share of dealing with possessed and discarded pokedolls turned into Pokemon, so the thought that this might be another rendition of this situation had crossed her mind.

There was a specific location given to her for her to investigate, and despite her better instincts, the nervous young woman would pursue this particular abandoned treehouse. And it was there that she would bump into the young Alexei Ivanov.

"Excuse me? Sir? Are you one of those workers who dress up for haunted houses, or are you here to investigate the weird happenings?"

He was outside, looking around nervously. Rubbing his hands together in an attempt to keep them warm.[break][break]

Why was the night much chillier than normal? And the way that the sky was moonless… it was certainly something to be concerned about. Alexei wondered if he was going to have to look through this alone, and wished he didn’t, because he never really liked the creepy-crawlies that went bump in the night.[break][break]

Him, the Fortree Gym Leader, afraid of the dark? It was more likely than you would think![break][break]

He almost jumped a mile into the air when he heard a female voice address him from out of nowhere. Almost shrieking, he turned around quickly, before letting out a nervous sigh of relief.[break][break]

“No… in fact I was called here to take a look at what’s inside this thing. It… just standing outside gives me the creeps. They said… rumors said that someone hung themselves in here, and then… their spirit refuses to move on. Hopefully it’s just a story,” he explained, nervousness clear in his voice. That was what the person in-charge had told him, and Arceus, the place set the fine hairs on the back of his neck on end.[break][break]

Like there was some truth to it.[break][break]

“Hopefully we don’t need to exorcise th-this place, it gives me the…the creeps,” he added, his teeth chattering against the cold evening. Why it had to be done before midnight, he didn’t know. But that was what the request had stated. The sightings… were most proliferant between midnight and three in the morning.[break][break]

The so-called ‘witching hour’.[break][break]

And that gave Alexei the creeps!

Every bump in the night, gust of wind through the trees, whistle of the animals just within her peripherals, it all made her jump and twitch and tug her coat tighter around her. It's as if she's convinced that just keeping her clothes on tighter makes her all that much safer.

What surprises her more is how high the other man jumps. For a moment she wonders, worries that she's just as scary as whatever creepy-crawlies are out there. She glances over her shoulder cautiously, prepared to see some sort of goblin or ghost hanging over her shoulder.

"Oh! Oh.. okay. Well, uhh, me too, kind of. I guess. I sort of volunteered, but I'm starting to think I've walked into something I'm totally not prepared for."

Alexei's speech is unsettling and makes her immediately feel like turning tail and abandoning ship.

But then again, the thought of some sad Pokemon holding on so tight to this place makes her uncomfortable and sad and she feels obligated to help them pass on.

“Y-you and m-me both,” he quietly agreed.[break][break]

He didn’t know why, but ever since he was a child, anything that was eerie, or borderline haunted always set him off and made him want to run away from whatever the unknown was.[break][break]

It was the bumping in the middle of the night, the crashing, the clattering, and the sounds from what he couldn’t see that really upset him. He needed actual, tangible proof to believe what he was seeing, if that made any sense at all.[break][break]

They had a long night ahead of them, and just as he was about to turn to her and inquire for her name a loud snapping noise caught his attention. Way more tense than usual, he looked around fearfully.[break][break]

“Wh-wh-wh-what was… what was that?” he asked, shoulders tensing up and looking around, hoping to spot the source of the cracking noise. Eventually, a tree branch fell down not too far from where they were, and after it had landed something followed not too long after it.[break][break]

Something… Alexei wished he never saw.[break][break]

“Gh-gh-gh-gh…ghooooooost!” he stammered out, watching as the specter… the dead… the man, whose neck looked unnaturally warped and twisted raised its arms and began to approach them, all manner of Curses falling from its lips.

Avery can feel every prickle of cold tickle her flesh, leaving behind a wake of goosebumps. She was scared, real scared, because no matter what direction she looked in she couldn't see what she was supposedly hearing.

Fortunately, it seemed she wasn't the only one hearing all of the creepy, crazy bumps in the night. Alexei seemed to be just as out of body as she was, and she was grateful for that if that wasn't too insensitive to say.

Something snaps behind her and she nearly drops to the ground, screaming despite her own sense of self-control. Alexei voices her own question and she wraps her arms around herself tightly. It seemed that a branch had broken from its perch, but how? It hadn't looked at all weak beforehand, so why had it suddenly fallen now?

Thank goodness no one had been under the tree when it happened.

"It-it's just a branch."

She starts to explain, to try and calm herself and the young man. Unfortunately for her, just as she says this a ghost appears. It's neck is at an odd angle and the image of the man looks tortured and in pain. She screams again, but this time it comes out like a desperate sob.

Avery buries her face in Alexei's shirt and hugs him tight, desperate for consoling.

Why did specters exist?[break][break]

It was a question to which Alexei had no answer. Why was there something like ‘unfinished business’ whenever things were left undone—especially by people who had suddenly departed this world across the veil?[break][break]

He wish he knew the answer to that, too.[break][break]

The moment the Curses are done dropping from the specter’s lips, it cackled in their direction, before vanishing. Alexei thinks it’s over, but his instincts are screaming that this hasn’t even started yet. Looking around wildly, he barely registered the specter’s shadow before it reappears behind his companion’s back, breathing noisily against her neck.[break][break]

“Wh-wh-whoa,” he managed to say, his teeth chattering as he looked around wildly. The pallid figure, not content with scaring the young woman, then decided to press its Grudge all around them. For a moment, everything was still there, still present.[break][break]

And then the attack assaulted his senses from all sides.[break][break]

It was like the stars had gone out. The air got much colder, the surroundings pressing down on him in an attempt to crush him from the outside in. The Grudge of the old man’s ghost was too effective, silencing him as he struggled to breathe and regain control.[break][break]

He wouldn’t let the specter win! Not today![break][break]

His resolve was draining faster the longer the Grudge held him down, though.[break][break]

How was he going to fight this?!

The moment the ghost person cackles, Avery is paralyzed with fear. Maybe it's a product of the CURSES that fell from his lips, or maybe Avery was just weak to fear.

Regardless, she finds her fingertips ice cold and her breath hitching in her throat as Alexei pulls away to mutter an expression she can only begin to understand.

And then, just as soon as it arrived, the pallid creature of haunting disappears. She allows a moment to breath, to shudder, to catch her breath, then glances at Alexei with wide eyes.

"W-w-what the, where'd it go?"

One of her Pokemon burst from her belt, then, and she breathes a sigh of relief as it manifests as her own Banette. The Pokemon holds on tight to her hand, brushing its thumb over the back of her hand in comfort. For whatever reason, this act of kindness seems to help Avery calm down.

And that's when the creature comes back to visit, but this time without anger, and instead with curiosity and surprise. It seems the two ghosts interact briefly?

“It—it—it was… it was… it d-d-disappeared,” he breathed out softly. There was still the pressing issue of the Grudge and the Curse working in tandem, pressing down all around him like a suffocating blanket.[break][break]

It was like the kind of blanket that did not want someone trapped inside it to be released, however—his companion’s next actions shake him out of his panicked state for a few moments.[break][break]

Oh, that’s right… summon a Ghost-type to handle another Ghost-type… that makes… it… it makes sense, now that I think about it… he thought as the Banette that was with her calmed her down. A few seconds pass—but to Alexei it feels like an eternity—before the specter returned.[break][break]

Only this time, instead of anger, it hovers around them with… an air of curiosity?[break][break]

“Wha—wha—what’s it… want?” he breathed out a few moments later, hoping that they didn’t have to get into a rumble, or worst-case scenario, a battle that would end up badly.
