attempt #2 on haunter!

Orion startles as red light flashes and the broken halves of the Pokeball scatter apart, one half landing in the water and bobbing gently on the surface. Haunter grins at him like it had beat him in some sort of game, and the ranger decides he's very fond of this ghost-type indeed.

"You want a fight, then?"

Walrein makes an appearance before Orion can guess as to Haunter's intentions one way or another, and Orion glances between the ghost Pokemon and the aggressive ice-type before swearing under his breath and taking Alexei's offered hand up to the Lapras.

"You're a ghost, you can go through walls and shit," he tells Haunter. "Keep up!

He's never ridden a Lapras before, only his own Swampert, but he finds purchase and releases his Litwick. Phantom hovers after them with a worried expression, but Orion doesn't give the little candle much time to think. This was a mobile battle, now, the Haunter seemingly also trying to give the Walrein a wide berth. Smart.

"Shadow Ball!"

For a moment, Phantom's wick ignites; the candle burns with a black-and-purple flame that casts no light, forming into a shadowy ball of energy before it's launched toward the other ghost-type at high speed. Haunter gives him a mean look, and Phantom takes advantage of his chance to fire a second shadow ball after the first.

Haunter recoils, its cackle more sinister and less playful as it disappears only to emerge from a wall next to Phantom and surprise him with a shadow punch. Poor Phantom wasn't the strongest Pokemon to begin with, and the super-effective attack has the sinking ship lit with a flash of red as Phantom returns to his ball.

Shit.

He'd wanted to try and hit it with a status effect before catching, but there was little option for that now as they fled from the Walrein and deeper into the bowels of the spooky ship. He can still hear the Walrein charging after them even as they round a corner; the Haunter is still with them, as well, joined now by a Misdreavus whose intentions are unclear. Was it running from a pissed off whale, or was it trying to get in on Haunter's tricks? Either way, Orion ignores one ghost-type in favour of another — he pulls a dusk ball from his bag and chucks it at the weakened Haunter, all but crossing his fingers.

Thankfully when they had to bail, they bailed. He was surprised to see that the Haunter was actually following them—hadn’t his companion already chucked a Pokéball at it to capture it?[break][break]

He had totally missed the Haunter breaking free and wanting to scrap, as he was busy urging the Lapras on through the deeper sections of the ship. When they reached another deep bend, he had a split-second to make a decision—before pointing in a certain direction.[break][break]

“Head right, and let’s go,” he said as the Lapras moved forward—while Orion dealt with the Haunter, he was busy navigating the deeper parts of the ship. As he sighted the next walk, the water got shallower, and his Lapras made a noise of protest.[break][break]

“Alright, Marius, we’re getting off here,” he said, scrambling down the Lapras’s back, and holding a hand out to Orion so that the other could do the same. Once he was sure they were both down and off, he quickly recalled the Lapras back into his Safari Ball, before seeing that there was a Misdreavus who had followed them throughout this entire ordeal.[break][break]

“What, you want to battle?” he asked, hoping that the other would get down for a scrap—however, the sight of a Duskull had alarmed the Misdreavus into melting in the shadows, and Alexei wondered why the other had vanished so quickly. It wasn’t until he felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickling did he turn around and almost came face-to-face with a Duskull—whoa![break][break]

“Okay, then, first of all, rude, second—how could you scare the Misdreavus away? Fine,” and with a huff he pulled out a battered Moon Ball before chucking it forward. A loud roar pierced the silence as a familiar Salamence made his appearance—thank hell they had navigated to one of the wider areas of the ship.[break][break]

“Gabe—over here! Chase that Duskull down! Thunder Fang!” he pointed out as the draconid wheeled around and saw the Ghost-type, before eagerly flying over and preparing to bite down on the Ghost-type with electrified fangs.[break][break]

Spooked out of its mind, the Duskull then threw a Shadow Ball at the Salamence’s face—but the Thunder Fang had connected first, causing the specter to let out a wail of pain. In retaliation, the Duskull used Disable. While Alexei didn’t know the cue for that, as the Salamence turned around to give another electrified biting attack, he was surprised he couldn’t do so.[break][break]

“What? It’s not working?” he asked, to which the Salamence nodded. “Well don’t just hover there, bring it down! Do what you have to!” and with that the Salamence reared back, catching the Duskull in the face with a Dragon Claw attack as a second Shadow Ball finally managed to connect, causing the draconid to rear back and roar out of surprise. “Go!”[break][break]

Another Shadow Ball attempt came flying his way, but this time he was ready—and the Salamence dodged out of the way before releasing a powerful blast of controlled heat at the Duskull—a Flamethrower attack![break][break]

The specter let out another unearthly little wail, before attempting to get away—but no there was no escape for this one. A beam of red light from Alexei’s direction announced his intent as an empty Pokéball was thrown at it before it could run away.

capture attempt on prinplup!

Grasping the Haunter's pokeball firmly in hand, Orion hops off the Lapras without too much fuss and turns to assess their new surroundings. He can't see or hear the Walrein any more, but he'd thought they'd given it the slip the first time they'd lost sight of it. He doesn't relax, instead sending his Swampert out near the water.

"Keep watch on the water for us," he instructs, ignoring the grumpy expression of the mud fish. "If that Walrein shows up, fend it off."

Schism grumbles but obeys, leaving Orion free to watch Alexei's Salamence do battle with a Duskull. He chuckles when the red light of the pokeball swallows the wailing specter, turning to face the other man.

"Thought you didn't like ghosts?" He tilts his head. "Or is this another one for that trading forum you were talking ab—hey!"

He thinks maybe the Walrein's returned, because Schism lets out a battle-cry, but it's a different water-type who emerges from the depths. Prinplup attacks with metal claws, catching Swampert off guard as they scored across his damp flank.

Schism is quick to recover and retaliate with a hammer arm, one limb repeatedly bashing the other water-type while the other lifts to protect the mud fish from Prinplup's drill peck. The earth quakes as Swampert slams its arms back to the ground, unbalancing the Prinplup and disrupting whatever attack it had been preparing.

Taking advantage of the opening, Orion throws a pokeball at the penguin. It seemed a powerful sort, even if Schism gave him a dirty look for stealing his victory.

"Geez," he breathes, watching the pokeball tremble on the floor. "The wild Pokemon are real upset today."

“It’s for the trading forum—“ Alexei began, before noticing that Orion was distracted and was dealing with a Water-type that looked hell-bent on scratching the eyes out of the Swampert companion that had been tasked to be on the lookout for the crazy Walrein.[break][break]

He didn’t know how deep inward they had gone, all he knew was that the further they went, the weirder the Pokémon got.[break][break]

Looking around, he wondered if they could be able to find a light source. Squinting in the semi-darkness, he very nearly misses the splashing noise—and then he spots it.[break][break]

Quickly pulling back his Lapras, he then sends forward his Lucario—right at the moment the Skrelp had lobbed a bomb of Toxic sludge at them! “Okay, that’s not nice!” he called out, ducking down to pick up the occupied Pokéball that held the spooky Ghost-type and getting it out of the way.[break][break]

“Snipe it, Vince! Aura Sphere!” he continued, watching as the auric energy lit up the Lucario’s paws, while a noxious Sludge Bomb attack drenched the dual-type from head to toe. Thankfully, the Lucario was part-Steel, so he was sheltered from the noxious effects of the poison.[break][break]

The dimly-lit area slowly bloomed in a flower of sparkling auric lights and energy, as the auric attack coalesced into physical form. As the Aura Sphere flew from the Lucario’s paws, another Sludge Bomb attack came pelting its way—avoided with a clever use of Extreme Speed.[break][break]

As the target struck true, the Lucario closed the distance before coming in with a series of Bullet Punch attacks at close-range, striking the Skrelp from so many directions.[break][break]

Eventually, the weird-looking Horsea-wannabe was worn down, before a beam of red light sucked it up, sparing it from the Lucario’s attack.

capture attempt on kabuto!

Kabuto was in a precarious position, flipped on its back with its little legs kicking at the air. Orion would have felt sorry for the little creature if it hadn't taken out its frustration on his Swampert: the mega drain attack was doubly-effective, Schism snarling in pain as the energy was pulled out of him. He didn't quite look on the edge of fainting, thanks to the Kabuto's relative weakness, but being that Schism was his ticket home, Orion wasn't willing to take chances.

"You're coming back in," he says firmly, recalling the mud fish before it can protest.

He sends out a Scizor, the buzzing of her wings loud in the confined space. She clacks her claws together, ready for battle as ever.

"Take it out."

He's not feeling particularly fond of the fossil Pokemon after what it had done to his Swampert, so he doesn't feel guilty as his Scizor attacks: first with an x-scissor that knocks the dual-type back onto its feet, then with a series of bullet punches that keep it from retaliation.

He recalls his Pokemon before she can go overboard, knowing the former black-market Pokemon to be rather ruthless, and throws a Pokeball at the weakened fossil.

"Know anyone on that forum that wants one of these?" he asks Alexei, gesturing.

He took one look at the Kabuto that Orion had captured, and there was the beginning of a smile or a smirk, Alexei couldn’t tell which… he had a definite answer for the Ranger, though.[break][break]

“As a matter of fact, I actually do… I’ve been looking for one of them, myself. Would you be interested in a Duskull, by any chance?” he inquired in return.[break][break]

Man, this would be completely hilarious with the way that this would resolve itself because holy shit, he had never met any single one of the people he traded Pokémon with.[break][break]

Maybe this was the first time this was going to happen, ever? That he would meet whoever would be taking care of the Pokémon he caught, but didn’t exactly have a use for at the present time?[break][break]

Before he could even ask another question, the Lucario lets out a bark, and out from the waters not too far ahead comes the ugliest-looking toad that Alexei had ever laid eyes on. Even if the Seismitoad was native to his home region of Unova, there was something that… didn’t sit right with him whenever he saw one of these frogs.[break][break]

“Send it back,” was all he said, and that was all it took for the Lucario to dash forward by way of Extreme Speed as the Seismitoad let loose with a Bubble Beam, trying to attack the incoming dual-type.[break][break]

Eventually, the Lucario returns, patting down his paws and looking very proud of himself. There was no Seismitoad in sight, to boot.[break][break]

“Thank you, Vincent,” he remarked in the Lucario’s direction.

Alexei smirks at him, and Orion's stomach turns with a mild anxiety. Had he said something silly?

It subsides a moment later when the gym leader explains himself, and the ranger has to laugh — both at his own initial overreaction, and at the coincidence they had found themselves in.

"As a matter of fact, I would be interested in a Duskull."

Ghost-types are a specialty of his, and he doesn't have any member of that particular line. It's even more appealing to him because it's a Hoennian Pokemon.

Kabuto's ball has stopped shaking, the soft ping signifying a successful catch. He bends down to pick it up, intending to offer it up to Alexei—

—but realises that they've got wild Pokemon to deal with, first, as a Seismitoad rises ominously from the depths. Far less intimidating is an unfamiliar reptian Pokemon that gives Orion's Scizor a tearful look as she bears down upon it. It's enough to make even the vicious dual-type hesitate, and Orion gives a soft whistle to call her back to him.

"You're a cute little guy." The ranger crouches to get onto the Sobble's level, pulling out his Pokedex to scan the strange creature. Galarian, apparently, which explains why he's not even heard of it before. Where its tears make contact with skin, Orion can see straight through the Pokemon as if it's turned invisible. It reminds him of a Kecleon, almost. It looks frightened, tears welling up in its eyes, and he's quick to respond. "Oh, no no, it's OK! I'm not going to hurt you, you're all right!"

The Pokedex has Orion alarmed with its promise of the potency of Sobble's tears.

He doesn't want to start bawling in front of Alexei, because how embarrassing would that be? In desperation, he pulls a Pokeball out of his pocket and throws it at the teary creature, hoping it would work.

Before he could swap the Duskull over, they had company—a lot of company.[break][break]

Wondering if they were going to keep running into Water-types now, he then saw something splashing along the waves, intent on attacking with a Twister! Propelled by a burst of Agility, the little Horsea quickly threw itself forward before releasing the miniature tornado of debris aimed at the Lucario.[break][break]

“Oh, come on, more company?” he groaned, quickly recalling the Lucario and deciding that having someone who was the Horsea’s size would be perfect to deal with this one. For the second time today, the Ribombee made an appearance, and he pointed at the little seahorse in the water.[break][break]

“Catch it, Carina! You know what to do!” he added a few moments later, before the strings of a purple Pollen Puff spun together and the noxious ‘treat’ was thrown at the Horsea. Not to be deterred, the minuscule Pokémon followed it up with a Bug Buzz attack, vibrating her wings together so much the humming noise rebounded around the area and made Alexei cringe due to the proximity of the noise.[break][break]

Note to self: don’t use Bug Buzz in an enclosed space. It sounds terrifying, he thought as another series of Pollen Puffs came flying from the Ribombee, who was avoiding the blasts and jets of water that the Horsea was shooting at it in an attempt to snipe the little dual-type out of the air.[break][break]

While most of the Brine attacks shot by the Ribombee harmlessly, all it took was a combination mix of Fairy Wind and Bug Buzz to make the Horsea dizzy—before the little dual-type continued to throw purple Pollen Puffs at it. The torrent of water eventually stopped, before the Horsea flopped exhausted.[break][break]

About to sink underwater, Alexei quickly threw another Pokéball at the Horsea, hoping to get it before it vanished.[break][break]

Just… how many Pokéballs did he have on him?!
