As the occupied Pokéball bobbed in the surf, he quickly walked over to pick it up—and the humming noise from his Ribombee alerted him that there was something else, yet again, in the water.[break][break]

Before Alexei could take another look, Carina was already on the move—hurling another noxiously-colored Pollen Puff at the new threat that had decided to jump-scare the pale-haired human she travelled with from out of nowhere.[break][break]

“Whoa… nice… nice save, Carina,” he continued as he grabbed the Horsea’s occupied Pokéball before turning his attention back to the battle that was unfolding right behind him. The weird-looking…thing… had literally thrown itself at the Ribombee with a Liquidation move, and the small dual-type barely dodged it by flying above in the nick of time.[break][break]

Annoyed, the strange Pokémon lashed out with a weird move—whatever it was, the Ribombee’s face contorted into a confused look. “Carina! Do your thing!” he added, watching as a barrage of purple Pollen Puffs began emerging from out of nowhere (at least on the weird Pokémon’s perspective), being lobbed right in its face like missiles.[break][break]

A blast of fae energy announced a Fairy Wind attack, interspersed with the purple globs of what Alexei knew to be poisonous variants of the sweet yellow treats he would receive from the Ribombee whenever she wanted to give him something sweet to snack on.[break][break]

The exchange between the two continued, Liquidation after Liquidation attempt trying to knock the Ribombee out of the air, but the small dual-type continued to flit just out of reach, finally unleashing another Bug Buzz in the enclosed space.[break][break]

Cringing, Alexei clapped his hands over his ears once more, before watching the strange Pokémon finally collapse. Relieved, he threw another Pokéball at the damned thing before it made a getaway.[break][break]

No doubt someone would want it.

capture attempt on trevenant!

Another bug buzz assaults their ears, and this time the trainers are not the only ones to suffer its effects.

A ghostly wail echoes down their section of the sunken ship, and Orion glances down the corridor to meet the gaze of... a Trevenant? Here? He's baffled, blinking to ensure that he wasn't seeing things. When the ghastly tree remains after the ranger's refreshed his vision several times, he dares to approach.

She doesn't seem hostile... confused, perhaps?

"How did you get trapped down here?" He knows she can't answer. He also knows Trevenant to be the guardians of forests and nature. Not of the ocean, not of a sunken ship in the middle of said ocean. Her responding cry is melancholy. "You don't want to be down here, do you?"

Wood creaks as the phantom tree shakes her head.

"I know it's not an ideal solution," he says, hesitantly, "but... you could always come with me, if you wanted?" He pulls out a pokeball to offer up. "I live in Fortree. There's a whole, huge forest out there for you to sink your roots in."

When she seems amenable to the idea, he holds out the capsule and allows her to make her own decision.

Now that the problem had been dealt with, the little Ribombee flitted over to the occupied Pokéball, bringing it to Alexei before it was swept away by the current. “Thank you, Carina,” he remarked, taking the ball from the minuscule Pokémon and recalling Carina.[break][break]

He was wondering if coming out here was a good idea—how long had they been out here, anyway? Why had he not yet encountered a Litwick?[break][break]

And then it has to be female, too! He thought, sighing as the sounds of another scuffle reached them—and his eyes almost bugged out of his head at the sight of one of the approaching shadows.[break][break]

“Well, shit,” was all he had time for, quickly throwing his Salamence’s Pokéball forward.[break][break]

“I don’t know about you but that one looks really scary,” he added, gesturing toward the Gyarados. Turning his attention to the Poliwhirl, a sudden assault of packed earth comes shooting right for the draconid![break][break]

“Get out of range! Approach it when it’s tired, and take it down with a Thunder Fang!” he added, as the Salamence roared, its Intimidate kicking in and cowing the Poliwhirl somewhat. Wasting no time, the dual-type flew forward, gathering electric energy in its wide-open maws.[break][break]

Another Mud Bomb attempt tried to swat the Salamence out of the sky, before the Thunder Fang connected on its fat, round belly—electrocuting the Water-type. Not wanting to be bested, the Salamence shook his head a few times, making sure that the Poliwhirl was effectively passed out before bringing it over to where Alexei stood and dropping it at his feet.[break][break]

“That was overkill…” he mumbled in the Salamence’s direction, before dropping another Pokéball on the Poliwhirl’s head.

capture attempt on gyarados!

Where Alexei retreats from the Gyarados, not wanting to deal with the intimidating creature, Orion watches it wide-eyed and full of admiration. Its scales glimmer as it performs a mystical dragon dance — and then attacks.

Thankfully, Katas is more prepared for the hyper beam than his trainer. Detecting the danger, he leaps between Orion and the wild Gyarados, angling his head so that the hyper beam reflects off of his horn. It crashes into the wall across from them, shakes the ground beneath their feet with its power.

Gyarados' dragon dance is matched by a swords dance from the determined Absol, who narrowly dodges a bite before retaliating with psycho cut. The ocean below is weaponized, a waterfall crashing into the disaster Pokemon, but Katas endures the hit and slams his iron tail into the neck of the serpentine beast. Gyarados crumples into the pool left by its attack, and Orion strokes Katas' drenched fur as he taps the beast with a ball.

"Thanks, pal. Again."

“You mind if I get the Feebas? A friend of mine’s looking for one,” Alexei asked him, gesturing at the weird flopping fish.[break][break]

Accompanying it was one familiar Water-type from Unova, but he wasn’t looking to get that one—in fact, he viewed Alomomola and Luvdisc somewhere on the scale of ‘wtf are these things supposed to be’ in terms of actual usefulness.[break][break]

Turning his attention to the Feebas, he was caught off-guard when this one suddenly lashed out at him with a scratchy Disarming Voice! Wait, since when did a Feebas know how to use that?! He thought in a panic, whistling for his Ribombee’s attention.[break][break]

Front and center the dual-type went, this time using a Fairy Wind attack to match the scratchy, discordant racket that the Feebas was causing. Following it up with a series of purple-colored Pollen Puffs, the Ribombee flew forward, intent on delivering its deliciously poisonous payload right in the gaping mouth of the Feebas.[break][break]

The Brine was something neither Alexei nor Carina were expecting.[break][break]

“Whoa!” he yelped, as the Ribombee dropped the purple Pollen Puff and was drenched from head to toe. An angry buzzing came from her direction, before another Bug Buzz attack ripped through the space—catching the Feebas off-guard.[break][break]

“Quick!” he added, and the Ribombee threw another poisonous, purple-colored Pollen Puff right at the Feebas’s gaping mouth before it could react. Once the poisonous treat had incapacitated the Water-type, another vacant Pokéball went flying.

Alexei makes a polite request to capture the Feebas, and Orion nods with a flick of his wrist, a silent 'go for it'.

His gaze finds the Alomomola, but he quickly dismisses any ideas of capturing it. It was neither one of his favourites nor did it look eager to approach the trainers, so he lets it be.

Instead, he drops his heavy bag onto the ground and digs through it for a towel with which to help dry off his grumbling Absol. He hadn't asked to be drenched by an angry Gyarados and besides, Absol didn't exactly smell pleasant when wet. The sooner he dried off, the better!

The moment the Pokéball dinged, he took a quick mental note as to where this Feebas would be headed off to—he was pretty sure the recipient would be over the moon with the Water-type, so to speak.[break][break]

Adding to the fact that it knew some pretty unconventional moves would make this all the more worthwhile![break][break]

Now, what were they going to run into—[break][break]

His train of thought was interrupted at the sight of the pink Pokémon, and he could only let out a guffaw of frustration.[break][break]

“No, no…” he began in the Ribombee’s direction. “Leave it alone. Save your strength for whatever comes next after that,” he added a few moments later. While the Ribombee looked ready to scrap, Carina let out a whine and flitted back to where he was waiting.[break][break]

He saw a familiar-looking Pokémon emerging from the shadows behind Orion, and pondered if it would be wise to tell him he was about to be snuck up on…

Orion takes an instinctive step away from the water upon glimpsing a flash of pink. Alexei seems less concerned by its presence than the ranger. "Oh, careful... those things can be really vicious."[break][break]

Thankfully, it seems to second-guess its approach. The same could not be said for the other Pokemon. Its coming is heralded by a chill down Orion's spine and a prickle at the back of his neck. Familiar in dealing with ghosts, he is less afraid than perhaps he should be, turning around to look at what had intruded upon his personal space.[break][break]

"Shit, I've never actually seen..."[break][break]

He trails off in fascination, observing the ghostly shell that was Shedinja. It seemed entirely indifferent to him — to everything, really. It doesn't even appear to be breathing.[break][break]

"Can I... catch you...?"[break][break]

He supposes he shouldn't be surprised when it displays absolutely no reaction to the question, nor the pokeball that is summarily tossed at it.

Thankfully the Shedinja goes along with Orion without complaint—maybe a little too nicely. Alexei knows how… unpredictable they can be, being lucky to own one. And how absolutely quirky it was too, considering the research he did while trying to learn more about it.[break][break]

About how it came from the cast-off shell of a Ninjask and appeared mysteriously after a Nincada evolved…[break][break]

The next Pokémon he saw, he let out another guffawing noise of dismay.[break][break]

“Really, Arceus? Of all the things—really?” he muttered, resisting the urge to roll his eyes at the sight of a Simipour seemingly ‘sunbathing’ somewhere nearby.[break][break]

What the absolute fresh hell.[break][break]

Either way, he didn’t spare it a second glance, and continued onward. He wondered if he was going to meet what he originally came for in the first place…

"Aw, c'mon, they're not so bad," he says of Simipour, though he has to cover his mouth to stifle his reaction to Alexei's exasperation. "I'm sure if we keep looking, we'll run into what you're looking for eventually."[break][break]

The trip's already been more than worth Orion's while — even more so when he spots the Drifblim ghosting toward them.[break][break]

"Shit — Katas, look out!"[break][break]

Though he'd shouted the warning in time for Absol to react, his attempts to detect the threat are unsuccessful. Drifblim has slipped into the in-between, a phantom force that reappears to strike the dark-type. Though Katas appears relatively unhurt, Orion refuses to tolerate such an assault upon his partner. Returning the Absol to its pokeball, his Swampert is sent out in its place.[break][break]

An avalanche is quick to bury the ghost-type, though it phases through the snowy obstruction afterwards. It lists in the air, clearly wounded, and Orion holds out a hand to stop his Swampert from causing further harm.[break][break]

Instead, he tosses a pokeball at the weakened ghost.
