It was like this particular calling was made with him in mind.[break][break]

Of course there were others that claimed to be children of the air, but he had the birthright to actually lay a claim on that—having come from Mistralton—and at the same time being the Fortree Gym Leader.[break][break]

For the moment, though, he was just Alexei, helping out people who were most likely stranded on the stretch of water, among the little sandbar islands that were scattered along the route to Slateport. How the hell did Pacifidlog not sink into the waves whenever the big cruise ships went by was a mystery, but that was for another day.[break][break]

There was an increasing number of people getting stranded on the sandbars, mostly stuck without Flying-types or having been swept there by the unpredictable current and tides, with no way to get back to dry land.[break][break]

Sure, he had a wide variety of fliers to choose from, but today was dedicated to Air Noivern, a.k.a. Fenrir. He had a myriad of companions as well with him, but he felt that Fen was best in this situation, at least.[break][break]

Checking his phone for the message, he continued to circle around the area, looking for whoever had sent the message that they were stuck out on this lonely stretch of ocean with no way of easily getting back lest they got swept further away…

She didn't mean to get so lost, so swept away in the current. She had meant to just have a lovely day at the beach, spending the day relaxing in the sun. It was normally such a lovely sound hearing the waves crash against the shore, but currently, it only felt intimidating. There she stood, huddled on a sandbar with her backpack in hand. It was lucky that she had decided to let Bubbles out to play in the water when she began to swim away so he could even grab her stuff from the beach. The bag was a bit damp, but it was at least better than nothing. The poor gal certainly wasn't strong enough to swim against these currents and carry her back to shore, and she didn't exactly blame them. Bubbles was a rather new addition to the party, but she had never felt more thankful to have them than right now.

The frog-like pokemon was sitting perched on the sandbar beside her, just in case anything went wrong again. It wasn't too hard to request assistance with her phone, luckily in a waterproof case to keep it safe, but the wait was killing her. With a long sigh, Ruby sat down and practically cuddled right up to the frog pokemon. Bubbles' had wet skin, cold to the touch, but it was still infinitely better than nothing. The minutes passed and passed and Ruby grew just a little bit more exhausted. All this stress was wearing her out.

Suddenly, Bubbles gently nudged their shoulders, eyes locked to the skies. Ruby immediately looked up, a sudden smile on her face. Someone was flying overhead! She quickly jumped to her feet, careful of the loose sand beneath her feet as she waved her hands. "Hey!" She shouted out to try and grab their attention. Whether or not it was the assistance she had asked for or someone who just happened to fly by, she would take any help she could get!

It didn’t take too long for Alexei to hear someone calling for their attention, and the Noivern sharply banked in mid-air, turning to face the source of the voice.[break][break]

“Yeah, that’s them,” he said to the airborne wyvern-draconid, giving the shoulders a pat. “Let’s come in for a landing now, go!” he encouraged the Noivern, who began to circle around in a wide arc near the place where the other person was calling for his attention.[break][break]

He didn’t know if the owner of the voice was flailing like crazy, but here he was, coming in circling for a landing on the little sandbar.[break][break]

Eventually, the Noivern alighted on the shallow bank, ruffling his wings before he slid off the draconid’s back. “I got your call for help! How did you end up all the way out here?” he inquired of the young lady in front of him, who was accompanied by a Greninja.[break][break]

Oof, she’s lucky to have one. I haven’t the chance to get that one yet… he thought idly, before remembering to introduce himself.[break][break]

“My name’s Alexei, and today I’m the knight in shining armor come to rescue you. Where would you want to fly to? I can literally take you anywhere in the region, just say the word,” he added a few moments later, taking a bow before gesturing to his companion, who was now picking idly at something in his neck ruff of fur.

So it was her ride! She instinctively let out a soft sigh of relief, pulling her bag up close to her as she spoke. "Well, I was just out for a swim! And suddenly the waves came and swept me away in the current all the way out here. I'm just lucky I had let bubbles out to enjoy the sea with me. He went back and grabbed my bag for me." She quickly reached over, affectionately rubbing his back. Bubbles, of course, stood taller and quite proud of himself as the short girl praised him.

Hold on, did he just say anywhere in the region? Ruby's eyes widened a little bit. She was expecting just a lift to shore, not just a ride anywhere. This massively changed things, in an incredibly exciting way. Almost immediately it was like she was trying to internally debate. After getting swept away, she didn't feel like going back to another coastal town so soon. Maybe something a bit more... tropical! After all, there was so many interesting places around. However, it was lucky that she had a change of clothes in her bag. This swimsuit in any other place probably looked really out of place.

"Oh, Umm, well, do you think maybe I can Fortree City? I've never actually been there, but it sounds like it's beautiful. I'm kind of a tourist, I guess, so it's not like I really have any home I have to go back to!" She giggled softly, reaching into her bag to grab the Pokeball and retrieve Bubbles.

"If that's uh, okay with you, that is. I'll find a nice hotel or something!"

“You have a very good Greninja with you, always keep him close to you. They’re crazy loyal,” he remarked, nodding in approval. “Thank goodness you managed to get here! Did you come from Pacifidlog Town over there?” he pointed in the direction of the little town perched atop a colony of Corsola.[break][break]

It was an educated guess, to be fair![break][break]

The moment she mentioned Fortree, though, his eyes lit up like stars in the evening sky.[break][break]

“It’s definitely your lucky day, as I live in Fortree, so I can show you around,” he began, taking a little bow before walking over and scratching the Noivern’s neck fur to keep Fenrir distracted. “When I say anywhere, I can literally take you anywhere in this region,” he added with a laugh.[break][break]

Now, what would she prefer riding?[break][break]

“I have quite the variety of Flying-types with me. Would you want to go there on a Noivern’s back? Or would you prefer the classical route and fly on Air Braviary? I also have a Salamence we could fly back on,” he offered. Well, he also had an Aerodactyl but he wasn’t sure how she was going to take flying on the back of the Fossil Pokémon so he left Terra out of the selection, at least for the moment.[break][break]

“Pick any one of the three—oh, that reminds me! Are you hungry?”[break][break]

Without further thought he pops out a pink Love Ball to full size and sends out his Ribombee, who emerges from the flash of red light. Yawning, he heard the little humming noise coming from the minuscule Pokémon, and he nods in the young lady’s direction.[break][break]

“Carina, can you give her a Pollen Puff to eat?” he asked, and before he knew it the sticky, yet sweet-smelling yellow threads began to take shape and form, before the Ribombee flew over and presented the Pollen Puff treat to her.[break][break]

“A snack for the road, before we fly?” he inquired, hopeful.

Ruby couldn't help but smile a little bit wider as he complimented her Greninja. He truly was a good boy, she'd definitely make sure not to take him for granted. However, at the mention of the town, she shook her head. "No? I mean, I don't think so. I was just on a local beach nearby when I got swept away." Still, the idea of one day visiting the town when she wasn't sick of water sounded exciting!

Of course, the news that he lived in Fortree and could easily show him around was incredible news. She perked up a little bit, walking right over towards his side and looking up at the Noivern. A personal tour from a local? This day went from bad to absolutely great! Such a pretty pokemon too... However, at the offer of another pokemon carrying her, Ruby's eyes widened even more. Braviary? Salamence? Ruby was admittedly a bit stunned. Just how many flying pokemon did he have on him?

The pink Love Ball sending out a Ribombee immediately made her smile even wider. She hadn't felt so well taken care of since she started traveling on the road in, well, forever! She eagerly nodded her head and taking the Pollen Puff, taking a small nibble out of it before speaking softly. "Umm, do you think I could maybe fly on the Salamence? I've never seen one before!"

“Allow me to introduce you to Gabriel, then,” he remarked, pulling out a Moon Ball from his jacket pocket and popping it to full size. Tossing it forward, the draconid emerges from the flash of red light, letting out a singular roar once he had materialized.[break][break]

“Hey—hey, Gabe. You think you can calm down a little? Don’t scare our companion here!” he remarked, quickly walking over and giving the Salamence a neck rub. The Noivern let out a derisive snorting noise in the Salamence’s direction, and if anyone could understand PokéSpeak, Fenrir was telling Gabriel to calm his proverbial tits down![break][break]

An embarrassed noise came from the Salamence a few moments later, before he turned around to face her. “Sorry about the roar. It’s his Intimidate ability, thankfully I told him to cool it down,” he apologized, before gesturing her closer.[break][break]

“Gabe, protect her with your life, okay? No barrel-rolling! She might get airsick,” he warned—knowing how much of a show-off flier the Salamence was.[break][break]

“Are you ready to go?” he inquired, watching as the Ribombee flitted closer before settling down on his shoulder, handing him a Pollen Puff to snack on too before they left the sandbar behind and made their way to Fortree.[break][break]

“Just say the word—he’ll follow me and Fenrir to Fortree,” he added, giving the Noivern a reassuring head scratch.

Gabriel. She couldn't help but back up a little bit, mouth dropping softly in surprise at the sight of the beautiful dragon-type pokemon. She didn't have much experience with the type, let alone anything so obviously powerful and aggressive. Still, as Alexei simply walked over and chastised him, asking him to calm down and he looked embarrassed Ruby couldn't help but chuckle quietly. He looked big and intimidating, but clearly he was a big softie inside. Or at least, Ruby thought so.

Carefully walking over towards his side, Ruby slowly brushed her hand against his scales gently. As if trying to get him used to her presence, she stood beside him for a few seconds, letting him sniff her, get used to her before finally attempting to climb atop him. It was rather difficult with her short legs, but with a quick hop Ruby slowly clambered on top of him. Wrapping her arms around him, she gripped tightly and glanced up at Alexei. Just say the word? She bit her lip in slight nerves.

"O-okay. Uh, let's go!" Ruby spoke out loud, instinctively gripping tighter just in case. Whatever happened, all that Ruby hoped was that she didn't fall off in the middle of flying. The sight of the region in all it's beauty wouldn't be worth it if she came out with a few broken bones.

“Hang on tight, I don’t know what the weather’s going to be like after we leave here. With a reassuring ear scratch and a slight whistle, the Noivern braced himself and leapt into the skies, spreading his wings as he caught the first updraft of wind that came blowing their way.[break][break]

Looking behind him, he hoped that the Salamence would be fast enough to keep up with the Noivern’s flying speed. Which reminded him—Gabriel didn’t have Agility, but Fenrir did—and when Fenrir wanted to be a bit of an ass he would just use Agility from out of nowhere and start freestyle-flying.[break][break]

Thankfully Alexei’s the one in charge right now as he turned around in mid-air, waiting for the Salamence to catch up with them.[break][break]

So far, so good, he hoped.[break][break]

“Weather’s pretty fine so far, and that’s a good thing,” he called out to Ruby once the two had approached close enough. “How’s the view? Like it?”

It was one thing to fly in a plane, in a concealed and pressurized environment. It was a whole different experience to fly on the back of a Pokemon with powerful wings, the air blowing her hair wildly. They lifted up into the air with their wings pushing against the air and flying upwards into the skies. It was such a wild experience, to defy gravity so easily. Her eyes widened despite clutching around his neck even tighter, staring down as the sandbar slowly faded away into the background.

She didn't even realize they were a bit behind until she looked up and away from the ground. The Noivern was quite a bit ahead, but Ruby was entirely fine with that. She didn't mind if her ride was a bit slower, in fact she almost preferred it. It seemed like it would be easier to cling on tightly if they were nice and steady. Her arms relaxing ever so slightly, she affectionately patted her hand against the Salamence's neck as they eventually caught up.

As soon as Alexei spoke up to her, she shouted back across the winds. "It's lovely!" An excited giggle escaped her lips as she looked around. The skies were gorgeous, she could easily understand why some taking the flying taxi's back home were so common. Everybody wanted to enjoy such a beautiful sight. "Do you fly often?" Ruby asked in return, simply in awe of the powerful beasts flying through the sky. "I can't say I've ever really flown before! Even in a taxi!"

Alexei didn’t know how far they’d flown—he was having too much fun enjoying himself on Air Noivern.[break][break]

He was pretty sure Fenrir was also having the freaking time of his life as he began to barrel-roll through the skies, causing him to hang on for dear life as the Pokémon did so![break][break]

“Whoa! Fenrir!” he yelped after the Noivern had righted himself from the latest barrel-roll somersault exploit he had did. This caused him to come up close to where Gabriel was coasting along with Ruby on his back.[break][break]

The wind was picking up at a terrific pace, and felt absolutely glorious all around them.[break][break]

“Oh, I fly all the time,” he replied with a nonchalant wave of his hand. “Sure beats walking any day, to be honest,” he added with a lopsided grin on his face.[break][break]

“I have a lot of Flying-types, actually. How about you?” he inquired, wondering if she would be interested in such. What he wasn’t aware of was that they were about to fly in a storm—at least, the weather around them was still perfectly fine, if a little overcast and absolutely windy.[break][break]

Looking down a few moments, he saw that they were flying over the ocean—no immediate land in sight. That meant they had traveled some distance so far.[break][break]

“What are you looking forward to doing in Fortree when we get there?” he asked presently.

To see Alexei and his Pokemon flying through the air so dramatically, it was incredible. She was almost lost in the glory of the acrobatic flight before she realized she was being spoken too. "O-oh! I uh, don't have many flying pokemon at all! Most of my Pokemon tend to be Psychic types. Bubbles is actually an outlier, but they know a psychic move! So I guess it counts."

The weather was certainly something else, especially from up high. She had to remind herself to grip a little bit tighter as the wind threatened to blow her away. At this point, Ruby had put her faith in Gabriel, trusting he'd take care of her. Such a large, majestic beast... Yet so gentle and calm. She could easily understand why people flew, no doubt about it. Perhaps one day she'll find a Pokemon that she might fly on herself all the time.

"Well, I don't know yet!" She called out, turning to look at the man as they flew. "I might stay in a hotel up in the trees! Maybe do a bit of bird watching! There's gotta be so much to see and do! I just like going places I've never been before, and the idea of people living amongst the trees kind of reminds me of home. There was a town near where I lived called Ballonlea, where the trees were so huge, it blocked out the sun! And everyone used glowing mushrooms to see around! It's so pretty!"

Suddenly, a loud sound echoed through the sky and Ruby yelped out in sudden fright, clutching onto Gabriel's neck as tightly as she could. In the distance, the sky was quickly turning dark, loud thunder echoing for miles around. Suddenly frightened, Ruby instinctively looked over towards Alexei for support, not knowing what to do.

“Bird-watching is one of the big things about Fortree—especially during the yearly migrations,” Alexei quipped, beaming at the enthusiasm. “There are so many kinds that come flying through the city. They treat the area as a general stop over before flying on towards their winter roosts—which are far south of this region,” he added.[break][break]

There was a reason why a lot of Flying-type researchers called Fortree their home, and that was one of the reasons. The other was… basically, it was the Sanctuary that had people coming by to admire the wild Flying-types coming to rest around the area if but for a brief time.[break][break]

Hell, the place even offered tours when the Gym wasn’t busy receiving challengers. But that was for another day.[break][break]

The Salamence kept as steady as he could, not flinching when he felt unfamiliar arms wrap around his neck. Knowing that his human companion was nearby, he could afford to relax while being aware of his much-lighter passenger.[break][break]

“You come from where? A city that has huge trees blocking out the sun? Glowing mushrooms?” he inquired, now insanely curious about where she had come from. There was something rather enchanting about how she’d painted the picture of the place she was mentioning and he wanted to get to the bottom of that.[break][break]

Before he could ask another question, though—a peal of thunder shook the skies. This caused him to look towards their destination—where they were inexplicably headed.[break][break]

Looking down at Fenrir, he knew that he could fly through a storm, and so could Salamence, but what about his companion? Were they going to risk it?[break][break]

“Fen, get me close to Gabriel,” he instructed, before the other draconid flew closer, bridging the gap between the two.[break][break]

“Can’t let you get in danger on my watch, can I?” he said once the two draconids were flying side-by-side. “Gabe, don’t panic.”[break][break]

He already knew what he was going to do before she could say anything—with as much nerve as he could muster, Alexei moved the Fenrir even closer, before sliding off the Noivern’s back and landing right behind her. Now that there were two people on the Salamence’s back, he felt Gabriel grumble slightly, but another loud peal of thunder shook the area—storm clouds spreading faster and faster.[break][break]

Quickly recalling the Noivern, he then dropped the Pokéball down his pocket before unzipping his jacket and reaching for something inside. It was a plastic rain coat, folded up small.[break][break]

“Going to be a bumpy ride… here,” he continued as he handed her the small little square. “Get that on. We’re going to have to fly through that storm… because Fortree is past those clouds. Are you ready?”

She would have loved or rather infinitely preferred talking about Ballonlea and having a wonderful, calm flight than the stormy weather that they were encountering. However, at the realization that Alexei was now going to be flying with her directly her nerves lessened a little bit.

With shaky hands, she quickly reached out to grab onto the plastic raincoat and unfold it. As fast as she could with the combination of nerves and the growing wind in her face, she put the jacket on and suddenly clutched close to Gabriel. At the very least, she was already wearing a swimsuit so she didn't have to worry about her clothes getting soaked.

"I-I'm ready!" Ruby called out to Alexei, the fear rather obvious in her voice despite her best efforts to disguise it. She wasn't a daredevil and taking huge risks certainly wasn't something she was used to. And yet... A small part of her was already eager to call her parents tonight and tell them that she flew through a storm! The thought of impressing her parents putting her in a bit of a better mood, a smile slowly tugged at lips.

"Well, let's go! Fortree won't wait forever!"

No sooner had his companion placed the plastic raincoat on did the wind pick up in speed and intensity. To make matters even worse, the rumbling overhead grew louder as the Salamence braced himself, flying directly into the oncoming bad weather.[break][break]

“If it gets too loud—cover your ears,” he shouted over the rain that began falling down in torrential sheets. Normally, these kinds of storms were pretty normal while out at sea, but this was different—they were flying through this bad weather in order to get to the other side.[break][break]

“Hold on tight!” he continued, nudging the Salamence with his legs as he zipped up his jacket and threw the hood on—while it offered him enough protection against the elements, the bottom half of his body was getting soaked.[break][break]

Not that he minded, though![break][break]

The howling grew louder, and so did the shaking thunder. As the dual-type flew through the storm, a sudden peal of lightning shot down close to where they were flying, causing the Salamence to swerve wildly—and Alexei to quickly wrap his arms around his passenger, an effort to shield her from the rain![break][break]

Yikes, I forgot how bad this shit can get! He thought wildly as he shouted over the pouring rain, “Gabe, go faster! But fly safe!” and on they went, through the howling rain and the battering wind. Picking up speed, the Salamence let out an almighty roar, almost a scream, of courage as another bolt of lightning came down much closer to where they were.[break][break]

What was up with the freak weather?![break][break]

On and on they flew; the water soaking him through and through. He knew he was going to need a hot shower after this—so would his companion for the day![break][break]

The rain poured down in blinding sheets, but the Salamence flew true—it was like instinct guiding him on through the pounding, howling rain.
