the smell of nature assaulted his nose like a truck and tickled his nostrils so much that he couldn't hold back a sneeze. he's read about botanical gardens before but this place sure put some of them to shame from the looks of things especially with the maze that was lying before him! when explained to him that the leader would be on the other side of it he wasted no time in cutting his way through it. it was here that shinra learned a very important thing about himself as he had much time to think while walking. he was kind of bad at mazes.

he swore he rounded the same corner twice even if the pattern of the brambles said otherwise. for a minute he was just walking endlessly hoping he would get lucky and stumble out of the exit. as he did the sound of a cry snapped him back to actual thinking as he looked down and saw he nearly stepped on a seedot. "oh man, sorry little guy. hey you wouldn't happen ta know the way out wouldja?" the little acorn looked at him, a beat, and then turned and sprinted off away from him. "hey-hey! c'mon!"

he exploded into a jog after the little pokemon who was surprisingly quick for having no legs. soon he was racing through the maze and once he passed a T section he skidded to a halt and jogged into the stone area with a whistle and slowly taking everything in as he turned around while slowing to a walk. "man...you sure know your aesthetic..."

cait slowly chewed on a piece of lettuce, in the midst of enjoying a light lunch when shinra had made his appearance. she had been informed of his arrival and sought to polish off the remainder of her salad while he puzzled over the maze. he had solved the labyrinth of green quickly, but had granted her just enough time to finish off the remainder of her meal.

"congratulations," she said, dabbing lightly at her mouth with a napkin. "it usually takes people an age to figure out that part of the gym. and then there's the issue of dealing with challengers who try to - well - cheat."

how many times had she repaired her carefully placed and arranged shrubbery? forced to utilize her own skills and the skills of her companions to mend and regrow thoroughly sliced, hacked away or burnt sections of branch and leaf?

"i suppose you're here for a badge?"

the woman was seated upon a thin cushion, several pokemon that consisted of two leafeon and a single sylveon lounging lazily around her.

"and what might your name be?"

cait set aside her tupperware, napkin and eating utensil as she spoke, shifting slightly to face the man as she awaited a response.

he spotted the leader surrounded by some pretty pokemon and eating a salad? there was probably a vegan joke around this whole scene but that felt inappropriate to make. "yeah i'm looking ta earn all of them and you were the closest one to me. hope ya don't mind, looks like you were in the middle of yer lunch break. sorry 'bout that." hopefully she wouldn't notice the embarrassing shade of pink that was spreading around his face as he said that. he was a man on a mission but not a man without manners mind you.

"name's shinra redgrave by the way. y'know figure this place would look more like something outta a fairytale. its nice though." shooting her a smile he removed one of the balls from his belt and clicked the button to expand it, his hand gripping it tightly as he raised it up. "again sorry 'bout interuppting yer lunch. i'm welcome to wait till your done."

gardevoir ♂: synchronize - life dew, teleport, psychic, future sight, calm mind, hypnosis

cait shook her head.

"it's alright," she reassured. "i'm plenty full already - and it'd be rude of me to make you wait."

cait supposed that she should get the challenge underway, but before she called out a companion to fight on her behalf; she'd need to offer a simple explanation of the rules.

"this will be a one on one," she said. "if you want to acquire a badge you'll need to defeat my chosen companion for this fight. you are allowed one pokemon - and one pokemon only - so choose carefully."

by making use of the bond she held with her psychic companions, she successfully called upon one of her gardevoir with several concise thoughts. the one to teleport before her was a willowy and male creature who appeared smug.

"you're welcome to make the first move," cait said, remaining in her seated position.

choosing carefully was some pretty sound advice.

the moment the gardevoir suddenly appeared shinra did his best to hide the twitch his face pulled when he laid his eyes on the pokemon. he had been led to believe that this gym was focused on grass types. the evidence in the structure of this place only reaffirmed him the moment he walked in the door. he was ready to fling a certain member of his team into the fray. now they were going to have to take a seat in the back.

it was probably lucky that he just needed to beat this single 'mon to get the badge and while he did have teammates that could do it he surprise of the reveal of gym pokemon shook him a little. "alright then. one on one huh? think i know someone in mind then."

he threw the ball from his person and out of it popped out dante who let out an intimidating roar and flexed his muscles showing off just how much he could bulk up and prove that he was the toughest creature in the room. just seeing his pokemon get ready for a fight was enough to dim the worry shinra had that he couldn't help but smile. "keep yer claws out dante. don't know what kind of tricks that one's gonna use."

cait's eyes fell shut, the young woman seeking to strengthen the mental tether that presently linked her mind with her gardevoir's. the pokemon inclined his head in reaction, his focus settling upon the bipedal feline as he bulked up. the dual-type's smile had lessened as he identified the creature as a dark-type, which meant his personal arsenal was severely limited - if not utterly rendered useless.

'we'll need to think outside of the box for this one,' cait instructed.

gardevoir cocked his head to the side.

'you've an idea, milady?'

'i do.'

the young woman offered the gardevoir a plan, the creature's gaze cutting toward the slim river which presently surrounded the field as they communicated silently.

'we'll need to bolster your power first before we begin. start with a calm mind.'

gardevoir made a praying gesture and bowed his head deeply, his eyes falling shut as he focused on bolstering his own potential.

an eyebrow was raised by both trainer and incineroar as they watched the gardevoir fold its hands together in a sort of prayer gesture. something was up but shinra didn't quite know enough about this kind of pokemon to really make a confident call. for now he knew to focus on the offensive at least and wear them down. being a one on one fight meant that this fight could be over in one hit or turn into a war of attrition and either could easily be won by dante alone. that much he was sure of.

"right. show them a killer flare blitz!" the cat pokemon let out another roar in acknowledgement of his trainer's orders, its navel began to light up bright as flames sprouted fourth and engulfed dante's body as he charged forward. his sights were set on the gardevoir as it reared back its fist for a haymaker strike powered by its flames.

cait didn't reject the reality of her gardevoir serving as a metaphorical 'glass cannon' in comparison to the bipedal feline, which meant they had to avoid being on the receiving end of an excessive amount of damage.

'yes, my lady.'

the pokemon's hands separated before he clapped them together, the flame imbued paw of his foe passing through the remnants of his afterimage barely a moment later.

'get some water between you and incineroar.'

gardevoir's eyes were alight with power, the pokemon utilizing psychic to pull from the surrounding water source; the dual-type wielding the entirety of his body to pull up a decent amount of the liquid and craft a thick and lengthy wall of the flowing substance that effectively separated them. he had to focus, sacrificing all else in favor of forging an obstacle for the feline to bypass.

for a moment it looked like dante had hit the psychic type pokemon as his fist went through its body. wait a minute. the realization came too late as the image of the pokemon suddenly vanished from view and the incineroar was left dumbfounded at what just happened. he was sure that he hit it!

it suddenly appearing in the corner of his peripheral however said otherwise as it just stood there unharmed. "slippery one ain'tcha?" shinra called out as he watched the gardevoir suddenly summon a wall of water to protect itself. "well pretty sure that's cheating miss gym leader. can't say i'm mad though." it wouldn't be a challenge after all if it was too simple. if there was a wall then they would just break through, but something out of water was a bit of a problem, so the only option was to go around it.

"dante! show them how much of a high flyer ya can be!" the feline looked back at his trainer and gave him a thumbs up as he faced his opponent again and charged forward toward the water wall. as he was just a few steps from running he suddenly jumped into the air with arms crossed and maneuvered himself over the wall and falling down straight toward the gardevior ready to cross chop its chest.

the incineroar was fast and powerful, the creature built primarily for offence. its - his - physique betrayed that much, the feline's ability to leap only showcasing that his legs were just as powerful as his bulky arms. her gardevoir's barrier was rendered null, the liquid construction falling apart at the moment of impact. a cry escaped the fairy once the attack landed and he very nearly toppled over.

'that's quite a bit of power.'

she licked her lips, considering how she'd go about her next assault.

'again, my lady?'

'no. we'll try something else. i'm curious to see what they'll do next.'

gardevoir executed another praying gesture, life dew manifesting in orbs around them. the liquid dispersed into a beautiful spray, the droplets soothing away the pain and bruising that emerged as a direct result of the cross chop.

he couldn't believe that worked, usually dante overshoots a flare blitz when he does it like that. the bravado before was all so that he could use confidence to unnerve them. so them landing the first hit with it was such a good sign to him. even the sight of it seeming to use a move to recover from its injuries didn't even kill his joy. "go ahead and fix yourself up as much as ya like, we're just gonna hit harder than before." now if dante can back up his words victory was sure for them, and he had all the confidence that his partner could do it.

"give them that flamethrower slammer!" the incineroar gave a toothy grin at the sound of his trainer's words and charged forward once again. he squatted and jumped into the air again, this time his body splayed spread eagle like he was going in for a slam. his body also gave off another sign, his navel starting to glow as a powerful stream of fire suddenly shot out as he descended. as he did reach the ground he would position himself so that the cat would land on his hands and knees as the ground under him would be signed with fire.

she was putting her pokemon's level of control - in direct relation to their psychic capabilities - to the absolute test.

'psychic.'

her gardevoir's son had always had a penchant for the art, his skill surpassing that of his father's and sister's. and he'd showcase his talent by raising his hands and seeking to take control of the flamethrower, but his grasp was weak. he had only ever practiced controlling liquids and solids - but flames were something that he very rarely interacted with.

the flames halted briefly and gardevoir's form trembled, a decent amount of the attack subdued before a portion of it engulfed him. cait heard an obscenity echo within her companion's mind, his frustration felt through the bond.

'you're doing fine,' she soothed.

her gardevoir wasn't in full agreement with her assessment, his eyes narrowing into a glare as he rubbed at the inflamed and irritated flesh of his shoulder. instead, he prepared again, eager to test how he'd fair against the next attack. he had been weakened, but he remained upright and eager to face off against the feline.

the gardevoir sure was a tough fella, dante the incineroar could see that if he could brush off its flamethrower like that. still it didn't look like it made it out of that without some bad scratches. the feline pokemon couldn't wait, he saw this foe as someone who was tough and wanted to enjoy seeing how much more they could handle.

"alright. bulk up one more time and hit him where it hurts! give 'em a signature lariat dante!" shinra commanded and his incineroar followed as he flexed his muscles once more, this time making them look bigger than before before his body started to give off a faint glow that grew brighter as the light concentrated into his paws and he started spinning in place to turn himself into some kind of red twister.

that twister started approaching the gardevoir, as it did the sound of growling could be heard as dante was in full force now that he was pumped up. he was looking to finish this fight with its spinning lariat.
