the story of remiel calcifet

P R O L O G U E

Remiel Calcifet was born on a cloudy day during the 20th of May at Beliam Avenue, Hammerlocke, Galar W8 4PX— otherwise known as the Calcifet Palace & Gardens.

Remiel's mother, Edela Calcifet (now Queen Edelynn I), was a Galarian noblewoman, born and bred. He was the son of Renault Calcifet, a former Kalosian prince who served as Knight Commander to the Galarian parliament for decades before sacrificing himself to fell a Gigantamax Charizard. With a long lineage of heroism and nobility in his family, Remiel was groomed from a very early age to represent the best qualities of a proper Galarian gentleman. Though he faced rivalries from cousins (and even his own younger siblings, a sister and a brother) for the title as 'heir' to the family, Remiel was the oldest and was naturally expected to seize the title himself. And that title went far beyond having exemplary manners and superb intelligence. He was expected to become a powerful trainer, as well.

At the age of 14, Remiel was sent to live and study at Hammerlocke University. Despite being a rather quiet individual who sometimes rubbed his peers and teachers the wrong way, the lad managed to make a few friends along the way— including one of his closest friends, a girl by the name of Reagan Valentine. He would receive top marks and many trophies during his years there. He was even chosen as an apprentice to the Dragon-type gym leader presiding over Hammerlocke's gym during his very first year. The entirety of his time at school or at the gym, however, Remiel had used nothing but rental Pokémon.

This changed when, at the age of 15, Remiel was challenged by the heir to another royal family and his goons. Though typically not one to fall for cheap taunts, the boys had stolen his father's gauntlet from its rightful place in the Hall of Heroes. They threatened to toss it into the Lake of Outrage if he didn't battle them outside of school grounds. Remiel agreed. What followed was a violent battle between the two near the banks of the lake. The scales tipped in favor of his rival from the start. Pokémon that were personally caught and trained began to triumph over Remiel's rental Pokémon, despite his renown as a tactician and battle strategist. But the manner in which his rival's Pokémon were 'trained' didn't sit well with him either: the use of the traditional tamer's lash.

With his abhorrence towards such brutish means of training, the fact that he was losing almost drove him mad. Just as this was coming to a fever pitch (and the battle was coming to an end), however, the ground beneath their feet crumbled and they plummeted into a massive Pokémon den. The fall injured them greatly, with several of the other boys being rendered incapacitated. When the dynamaxed Pokémon living in the den appeared, Remiel struggled to limp over to the fallen body of his rival with his broken leg. His rental Pokémon were all beaten unconscious and resting in their respective pokeballs. The only option he had was to take one of his rival's Pokémon and flee the scene, leaving them behind as the dynamaxed dragon descended upon them. They would never be seen again, but Remiel would survive to see another day.

To this day, Remiel has kept that memory a secret. A feeling of shame and cowardice has gnawed away at him from the inside since then, and he's distanced himself from friends and family as a result. These feelings anger him, and drive him to become stronger than any other trainer in the world. So, with a Pokémon many would consider 'stolen', the young lad has risen through the ranks of his school to become an exceptional competitor. After graduating from Hammerlocke University at the age of 17, Remiel abandoned his title as heir to the Calcifet family in pursuit of his ventures as an anthropologist, and therefore a better understanding of humanity. But his true goal, his thirst for strength and power, was always present.

After exploring the Galar region and catching a few new Pokémon along the way, Remiel became part of a career exchange program that would open up a path towards working in Hoenn. The Devon Corporation hired him on board after the first interview, and a contact from the new Team Rocket approached him shortly thereafter.
