The Fortree Rescue & Treatment Sanctuary was admittedly quite a sight to see. Ruby couldn't help but have incredibly wide eyes as she walked up to the building. Helping out Pokemon in need was an incredibly worthwhile cause that simply made Ruby smile a bit wider. She didn't own any bird-like pokemon, if she excluded her Delibird, so she was totally unused to seeing Pokemon simply soar gracefully overhead in such a large amount of numbers. In her time in Fortree alone, she had seen more grass and flying-type Pokemon than probably in the rest of her time in Hoenn! Still, she was here today on business.

Gently pushing the doors open and stepping inside, Ruby moved to gently grab the two Pokemon she'd be using in her battle today and hold them carefully in her hands. The inside of the building was no less impressive, but clearly she was a bit lost. Her excitement faded into a bit of a confused look on her face as she glanced around. Who was she supposed to talk to for the battle? Was this even the right building? Suddenly feeling anxious, Ruby simply walked right up to the closest desk and spoke. "U-uh, hello! I'm here to challenge Alexei. I met him once before, and I want to show him my skill as a trainer this time!"

The building the young girl had turned into was actually the ‘hospital’ proper, and not the actual arena where the Gym Battles took place—the actual arena was outside in the back.[break][break]

The receptionist at the counter, a short brown-haired young man with green eyes, looks up from the ledgers he’s poring over and crinkles his face into the warmest of smiles.[break][break]

“Ah, you’re looking for Alex? Give me five minutes,” he remarked, quickly pressing the earpiece and speaking into it. Several moments later, one of the side entrances that leads out to the actual Sanctuary proper opens and out comes the actual man of the hour, carrying a sleeping Delibird who had a wing wrapped in bandages.[break][break]

“Oh, hello there!” Alexei called out at the familiar sight of the young girl he’d helped from the sandbar, before bringing the avian in his arms to the other young man. “Here, take him to the back in the recovery wing,” he said quietly, and the receptionist was gone with said Delibird.[break][break]

“Sorry, just got back from the hospital area—lots of Delibird are turning up abandoned and they’re being handled too roughly. I’ve sent out the other staffers who work here to rescue them and bring them here so they can recover before they can go on their way back to Johto, or wherever it is they came from,” he explained as he reached for a towel draped on the back of the receptionist’s chair.[break][break]

“What brings you out here on this lovely day?” he inquired a few moments later.

As soon as the man asked if she was here to see Alex, she quickly nodded her head and smiled, stepping back to wait patiently. It was honestly incredibly interesting to see what people she met on her travels did normally. Of course, when she learned that not only did Alexei helped heal flying pokemon, but also was a Gym Leader, of course, her interest was piqued immensely. When he finally arrived, Ruby quickly stepped over towards him and flashed a soft smile.

It was such a shame to hear so many Delibirds were injured this holiday season, but it was hard to bring down her infectious joy at the moment. Giggling quietly to herself, Ruby held up the two Pokeballs in her hands that she was planning to use and finally spoke. "Well, Mr. Alexei, I'm here to challenge you! For a gym battle!" Ruby let loose one of the Pokemon, considering the other one was simply way too big to be released indoors normally. Bubbles the Greninja suddenly stood up at her side, bowing respectfully towards Alexei as he fully remembered the man's assistance in the past.

"Look!" Almost without even giving him a chance to ask what he was supposed to look at, she was already reaching up and showing off her Badge Case, carrying the Meadow Badge from Cait Alfric's gym. "I uh, well I wanted to show you how good of a trainer I am! Come on, let me challenge you! I can handle it, I promise!"

The moment he saw the same Greninja from before, he let out a soft chuckle before watching the dual-type bow in his direction. Surprised at this little gesture, he bows back in return.[break][break]

He was right, after all—the Froakie line were known to be very loyal. Of course, the sheen of his scales was what caught his attention.[break][break]

“Wait a second, the last time I saw him he was a normal shade of blue, how did he—“ he inquired, because he was absolutely certain the Greninja had changed colors since their last meeting. He had to do a double-take before he noticed that there was a badge case being flashed in his direction. From the contents, he could identify one—the only one, as far as he could see—badge inside it.[break][break]

“So you’ve already been to Mauville, I take?” he inquired, looking at the shining leaf-shaped badge. “Either way, we go out to the back—this is just the front office for the Sanctuary,” he added with another soft smile on his face.[break][break]

Leading the way, he opened the same side entrance he had come from, and soon enough led the way to the outdoor arena.[break][break]

“I take you don’t have much in the way of Flying-types?” he confirmed, before reaching into his shirt and pulling out a thin little whistle and blowing on it once.[break][break]

Several shapes soared overhead, before one came down in a landing circle.[break][break]

“I’m sure you’re familiar with him, right?” he remarked, giving Fenrir a pat on the neck. “Whenever you’re ready to begin,” he continued, letting the Noivern vault himself forward and take his place, standing across from what he also remembered to be a normal, non-shiny Greninja.

Ruby, of course, simply blinked in response as Alexei reacted to Bubble's colors. Was he not blue anymore? She had always assumed it was simply a winter thing for the Greninja line, entirely clueless about how they worked. Still... he looked sort of blue in the right light, right? She hummed a little bit, reaching over to gently pat Bubble's shoulder with a soft smile. She was still a beautiful gal.

As he asked about going to Mauville, Ruby quickly nodded her head and smiled as she began to tuck her badge case away. Cait was an incredible gym leader, and the abilities to heal she had... It was simply mindblowing! Smiling incredibly widely, she followed him right outside the door and walked into the outdoor arena. It was so beautiful, absolutely stunning. The shapes of flying pokemon flying overhead were incredible. She couldn't help but stand back in awe for a few seconds.

As a familiar face came down, Ruby couldn't help but smile at the Noivern as he took his place. "I don't have many flying types, no! But I'm ready! I got a plan! Just you wait!" Ruby grinned, looking at Bubbles by her side before pulling out a second Pokeball from her bag. Tossing them out instead, Opal the Aurorus suddenly formed and roared out.

"I hope your flying friends know when to stay back from a gym battle because Opal here's comfortable in... cooler climates!" She giggled a little bit at her own joke, rather obviously giving away her plan.

“Well, well, letting me take the first move?” he continued with a hint of a grin on his face. Immediately he knew he was in trouble—if she was going to start with an Aurorus (he had one himself) then this was going to be a problem.[break][break]

The typing was pretty-solid, however the one move that he knew could topple this one out of the game—Fenrir didn’t have it.[break][break]

His Noivern was more suited for battling up in the skies, always confusing the hell out of people whenever he began to cartwheel in the air, driven by the Agility rush he would always resort to. Not today. Either way, he knew that this was going to be a bit of an uphill battle to even the tables.[break][break]

Plus, the only one I know who has Earthquake is going to be extremely weak to this one, it’s Ice! He’s a Dragon-type for Arceus’s sake! He thought as he scanned his options, before whistling softly. “Go,” he began, more to himself as the Noivern heard his signal.[break][break]

Vaulting into the air on a burst of Agility, the Noivern was now airborne. Without further ado, the gates opened as he gathered a burst of draconic energy in his mouth before opening fire at the Aurorus, sending a Dragon Pulse at the land bound dinosaur.[break][break]

Ruby smiled widely as the battle began. Opal wasn't fast, at least certainly not compared to his speeding bullet of a Noivern that moved incredibly fast. It was time to even up the playing field a little bit and give herself some kind of advantage. "Go, Opal! Just like we planned!" The fossil pokemon roared out, ice pouring out of their mouth as their sails shimmered with colors as the weather began to change.

Hail began to crash down from the sky above atop the battlefield, hopefully limiting the speedy Noiverns movement. Despite all that, the dragon pulse hit right on the mark. The blast slammed right into her side as she cried out in pain. Luckily, Opal was quite a tanky Pokemon and was able to take the hit and keep on going. The hail above didn't even seem to faze her one bit, bouncing off her tough skin without so much as a thought to it.

"Finally, follow up with Blizzard! You got this Opal!" Ruby shouted out to cheer on her gal. Gathering her energy, Opal's ice gems on her sides seemed to shine as she suddenly let loose a huge torrent of icy wind began to blast straight at the Noivern, empowered by the hail already raining down above.

notes: Opal uses hail! Takes the dragon pulse straight to her side and follows it up with Blizzard, empowered by the hail.

The air was fine, at first.[break][break]

Before the sudden change in weather took hold. The Noivern let out a cry of surprise, squawking as the Hail began to fall around him. Surely, this was the doing of the Aurorus far below them.[break][break]

Now, even if Noivern were primarily Flying-type, they were also Dragon-type; which was a point of contention among true-blooded ‘Dragon-type users’ and others who claimed that the Noivern was mostly a Flying-type that just had the Dragon-type attached to it.[break][break]

Now, there was also something else wrong here—Alexei hadn’t exactly fixed up Fenrir’s move set yet. Making a mental note to himself, he bit his lip as he looked up in worry, having heard the worried screeching noise coming from the draconid who was now battling a fierce onslaught of pelting ice and snow.[break][break]

“Fen! Fly safe!” he called out above, hoping that the Blizzard the Aurorus had sent out wasn’t going to hit him while he was trying to veer and somersault through the thickening drifts falling down.[break][break]

“And here I was thinking you were going to lead with him,” Alexei mentioned to Ruby back on the ground, tilting his head in the Greninja’s direction. “I still haven’t found one of my own. But I’m not giving up hope yet!”[break][break]

Back up in the skies, the Noivern had mere moments to let out a scream before the Blizzard came crashing down on it—fueled by a sudden burst of Agility, the dual-type attempted to evade it on the most part.[break][break]

While most of the ice had sailed past unharmed, one of his wings was now coated in a layer of frost, which was impeding his ability to stay airborne. He had to rethink his options—Aurorus had a typing he was pretty sure his Flying-type attacks would do jack squat on it.[break][break]

“Dragon Pulse!” he whistled from the ground. A blast of draconic energy, gathered from the Noivern’s maw, came erupting as he soared downward from the skies in an attempt to strafe the Aurorus from the air.[break][break]

Noivern out on the field! Gets hit with the Blizzard, it’s super effective! One wing is now frozen. Agility saved him from a full-out frozen attack, though. Flies downward and attempts to strafe the Aurorus with another Dragon Pulse attack!

Ruby couldn't help but chuckle softly as Alexei spoke about her Greninja, giving him a soft smile. She might not be an expert trainer yet, but a few mind games never hurt in a battle. "Well, I can't give away all my tricks right away!" She shouted in return. Bubbles simply continued to stand next to Ruby, eyes narrow as he watched the fight ensue and waited patiently for his turn.

She couldn't help but feel a bit cheerful that her plan was working so well. The Blizzard had frozen their wing! Opal once again tanked the Dragon Pulse, letting out a roar in response as the blast slammed into her side and attempting to ignore the pain that followed. "You can do this Opal! We got him on the run! But now's our turn to control the battle! Ground him!"

Opal let out another roar once more as the air around her seemed to suddenly be rapidly cooled as she prepared her attack. Aiming directly towards the Noivern as best as she could, she let out a heavy breath of frozen cold air, intent to Freeze-Dry the opponent and lock him in ice. The hail still raining down around them, the ice hitting Opal's body with no effect.

notes: Opal gets hit by the dragon pulse and roars in pain. Lets out a Freeze-Dry to attempt to freeze the Noivern solid, and failing that at least hurt him some more. The hail still falling down.

Ice had always been his worst enemy when it came to his Flying-types. More so if they were of a mixed heritage that made them doubly weak to it—case in point? His Salamence and Noivern.[break][break]

The cold wind around them was only getting worse as the Noivern struggled to keep himself airborne. Wait, what was going on? Why was the wind getting even colder than it already was? Looking around frantically, the dual-type never saw the Freeze-Dry attack coming.[break][break]

A loud shriek alerted Alexei to the falling Noivern, before a beam of red light quickly recalled the freefalling draconid. Ice really was their enemy… at least, for the moment.[break][break]

“You got him good. But I think… you might have a bit more of a challenge with this one,” he said, pulling a Dusk Ball from the depths of his jacket pocket and flicking it forward.[break][break]

A much smaller being burst forth, wings ready to scrap and rumble.[break][break]

“Don’t blink or you’ll miss him. Close the distance and aim a Low Kick, now!” he called out at the Hawlucha. Eager, raring for battle, the smaller, land bound avian then sped up, rocketing forward with an Agility-propelled dash forward, before lashing out low at the Aurorus’s legs with a sweeping Low Kick attack.[break][break]

Hopefully the tide would turn in their favor now![break][break]

Noivern gets hit by the Freeze-Dry attack + takes more damage from the hail, it’s super-effective! Alexei quickly recalls the Noivern and switches out to Hawlucha.[break][break]

Hawlucha rockets forward with a burst of Agility before attempting to strike fast with a Low Kick attack!

The hail continued to rain down around Opal as the Noivern fell to the ground fainted and Ruby couldn't help but let out a cheer of praise for her icy dinosaur. Opal roared out a victorious cry and she couldn't help but feel proud for her Pokemon. This was Opal's first truly serious battle, seeing the gentle giant's true strength was a marvel to behold.

However, the new Pokemon that Alexei sent out would definitely prove to be troublesome. She didn't have a clue who they were, but with their look alone she could only assume he was part fighting type. Just like Alexei said, with a blink he had suddenly dashed in faster than either Ruby or Opal could even try to react to. The heavy Dinosaur cried out in intense pain as their legs were practically swept out from beneath them, their own weight working against them. "Opal!" Ruby cried out, worry suddenly etched into her expression. There was no way she'd be able to take another attack like that again.

Biting her lip, Ruby quickly called out. "Opal! Can you still stand?" The Aurorus cried out in response, barely managing to get back onto her feet. It was beyond obvious to everyone that she was on her last legs, metaphorically speaking. Almost instinctively, Ruby felt the desire to call Opal back and keep her from getting hurt even more, but this was a Gym Battle! They couldn't afford to be weak, not now. "C-come on! One last stand! Take Down!"

Opal's gems suddenly shined as brightly as she could, attempting to gather all of her remaining strength to make one final reckless attack. Physically charging at the Hawlucha and leaping forwards. Landing with a heavy thud, regardless if she managed to strike her foe or not, the recoil from the attack knocked Opal out in return. Ruby quickly extended their Pokeball, pulling them back with a beam of red light. "You did good Opal, I'm so proud!"

Without a word from Ruby, Bubbles leaped forwards from her side and stood upon the battlefield. Their eyes carefully scanning their foe, preparing themselves for combat in a readied pose.

notes: Hail Continues. Opal is nearly knocked out by the blow, after being weakened by the two Dragon Pulses. Attempts one final attack, Take Down, turned Ice-Type attack via Refrigerate, before making themselves faint from the recoil. Bubbles takes the field.

“Move!” was all he called out. That needed no explanation.[break][break]

The incoming large mass that was the Aurorus threw in a last-ditch attack at the Hawlucha, but the speed at which the smaller Pokémon was moving was too quick to keep up. Barrel-rolling out of the way, the smaller wrestler-like Pokémon skirted under the Aurorus’s legs with another burst of Agility before coming back out on the other side, skidding to a stop on Alexei’s side of the field.[break][break]

“Okay, now I can get to see Bubbles up front,” he teased with a grin. Shit, if she led with the Greninja earlier, then I wouldn’t be in this position… he thought, his brows furrowed in concentration. Now that it was down to the wire, he knew he had to move carefully.[break][break]

The Low Kick strategy wasn’t going to work since these two were approximately the same size, and he was pretty sure that the Greninja had a few tricks up its sleeve. Okay. How was he going to approach this?[break][break]

Standing ready, the Hawlucha awaited further instructions, before a single whistle echoed across the field.[break][break]

“Charge! Flying Press!” he called out, knowing that he would have to take the fight to the Greninja. He watched as the Hawlucha rocketed forward on the burst of speed from earlier, launching himself up into the sky like a plane. The shadow was overhead, before attempting to come crashing down and catching the Greninja by surprise.[break][break]

Now it was going to be a test of speed…[break][break]

Hawlucha used Agility to dodge literally between the Aurorus’s legs before returning back to Alexei’s side of the field! Keeps an eye as the Greninja takes the field.[break][break]

Hawlucha charges forward with a Flying Press attack, jumping up high and flying like a luchador before attempting to crash down on the Greninja!

Ruby wasn't surprised when Opal's Take Down missed. She was a big, slow girl and the Hawlucha seemed to be incredibly fast. However, she wasn't too worried. Luckily, Bubbles was probably the best Pokemon she had to take him out. Bubbles was speedy and tricky to hit and she hoped it would be enough. With a smile, Ruby teased right back. "Oh yeah? Well, which one is she!"

On cue, Bubbles used Double Team. Illusionary images of Bubbles spread throughout the arena. Taking advantage of the moment and quite speedy herself, Bubbles left an image of herself right where she was standing while her true form moved across the arena with some of the other illusions. The Hawlucha's Flying Press was dodged, slamming down into a fake image that promptly vanished as soon as it was harmed.

The hail continued to rain down despite Opal's absence, small shards of ice smacking into the two Pokemon and likely dealing a small amount of damage. However, it seemed the double-team clones didn't stop the hail, the ice falling straight through them. Perhaps the only tell in which was real and which one was a fake.

"Now! Extrasensory!" Ruby shouted out, as Bubbles and all their clones held their fingers to their temples. Golden beams of odd psychic power would fire out of Bubble's eyes directly at the Hawlucha, but it seemed all her clones were doing the same thing with illusionary images, forcing them to choose which was real.

notes: Hail Continues. Bubbles dodges with Double Team, although her clones can be revealed on close examination due to the hail falling through them. Returns with Extrasensory, her illusions fake attacking as well and has a chance to make them flinch. Protean changes their typing to Psychic.

I knew it, therein lies my problem! He thought, scanning the area. He wondered if the Hail still pelting down around the area would be of some—oh, oops, look at that![break][break]

Bless this Hail… even if it hurts, he continued in the back of his mind as the Flying Press landed on a duplicate and obviously missed. The Hawlucha crash-landed on the dirt, before pulling himself up and rolling backwards much like an actual mucha luchador.[break][break]

“Follow the ice!” he called out, picking up rather quickly on the hint as the chunks of frozen ice phased through the duplicate Greninja, however the real one was also being struck.[break][break]

And then came the dangerous attack, in the form of an Extrasensory wave of energy.[break][break]

“Careful!” he called out, before the Hawlucha let out a pained cry—thankfully, the part-Flying type spared him from being bowled over in one shot. Wait, I still have a chance to turn this around! He thought, pointing forward through the Hail.[break][break]

“Endeavor! And chase after the real one! Follow the ice!” he reminded the Hawlucha again. Watching as the luchador bird lurched forward, the Hawlucha reared back its fist, following the falling chunks of ice and attempting to dodge as best as he could because shit, that still hurt![break][break]

An attempt to equalize the field was thrown as the Endeavor attempted to chase after the Greninja.[break][break]

Hawlucha’s Flying Press missed! Hawlucha ended up hitting the dirt and taking some damage from Hail. He gets back on his feet only to get smacked around by the Extrasensory.[break][break]

After staggering around, Hawlucha used Endeavor to level the playing field!
