Gavin has never been one with ambitions of challenging the league. Ambitions, certainly, but none that included the fame and infamy that came with being a trainer. As he further integrated himself with Team Rocket, however, the use for an alias in the public eye, with credibility, was becoming more and more appealing.

It's under this premise that he finds himself wandering the maze of Mauville Gym, air heady with the scent of nature. It's jarring to have stepped from the modern architecture of Mauville into what felt like the great outdoors, but he adjusts quickly and sets himself upon his goal. He knows how this challenge works: reach the end of the maze, and be allowed a chance to face the gym leader.

Pokemon peer out from behind woven branches and flit in front of his path, but Gavin pays them little mind. They are only distractions.

His mind and memory lend well to patterns. He does not get lost among the endless twists and turns, and eventually finds himself standing before a circular clearing, the soft bubbling of a river beneath the bridge ahead accenting the natural sounds.

Palming a pokeball, he glances around, sharp hazel eyes taking in his new surroundings.

"try not to lose him. and be more gentle. you'll end up tossing him into the forest at this rate."

'patrick' would be greeted with the sight of two primarina at play, the pair appearing to be toying around with a marill whom chortled happily as he was bounced to and fro or balanced upon their noses. cait observed from her side of the field, allowing for the pokemon to have their fun. it was only when she had noticed the blonde-haired fellow that she called for them to finish.

"stop," she ordered, her tone firm. "put him down for now."

the pair obeyed, their gazes settling upon the young man before they slipped away with a subtle gesture from their mistress. each of their bodies slipped - or plopped, in marill's case - in the water which bordered the field.

"you're here for a badge...?"

while her choice of words were to the point, her tone of voice remained its usual level of soft.

Though he recognizes them to be the evolution of one of Alola's signature Pokemon, Gavin has never seen a Primarina before. He watches them at play with a quirked brow before noticing the woman across the battlefield and shifting his gaze to her.

Beautiful, dark-skinned, green-haired... the gym leader, no doubt. He's heard basic descriptions.

"If you've got the time, yes." She certainly didn't seem to be particularly preoccupied, but Arceus knew Gavin hadn't the slightest clue what sort of duties gym leaders took on when they weren't battling. He'd never cared enough to look into it. "You are Miss Alfric, I presume?"

"i am."

she gave the young man a once over, gauging him silently before giving a small and barely noticeable nod.

"it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," cait said.

the young woman decided against idle chatter, aware that the man would likely prefer to proceed onward with his promised challenge.

"this will be a one on one," she said, her tone transitioning from warm to formal. "one pokemon per trainer will be present on the field. the battle will reach its conclusion and the victor will be determined depending on whose pokemon is left standing."

cait's gaze slid to the left before she clapped her hands once - and then twice. one of her formerly dismissed primarina reappeared, leaping from the waters and smoothly taking their place before their mistress.

"you are very welcome to begin."

"Likewise," Gavin, or rather 'Patrick', agrees.

Patrick Cavalli is a far friendlier man than the one who hides beneath his mask, and he smiles warmly at the gym leader.

He nods along with her explanation of the rules, cogs already turning in his brain. He knew the gym leader to use grass and fairy-type Pokemon and carried six candidates at his belt in accordance, but who to start with...?

She whistles a Primarina onto the field, and he quickly crosses several Pokemon off the list. The pokeball that had rested easily in his grip is returned to his side, and he withdraws another in its place.

Corviknight appears on the field in a flash of brilliant silver steel, a low, croaking caw sounding in the avian's throat. It shuffles its wings with the sound of clinking metal, tilting its head to preen at its shoulder feathers.

Gavin is not used to telegraphing his Pokemon's actions: that's a great way to give one's opponent an edge over you. However, this is a league-sanctioned gym match, and he clears his throat.

"Get ready, Corviknight! Hone Claws!"

Sharp talons scrape against the stone beneath them, the Galarian bird honing its claws in preparation for the battle to come.

"that pokemon..."

cait peered at the steel crow, her head cocking to the left as her primarina's tilted the right.

"i haven't seen it before," she remarked.

but by its appearance she assumed it was some sort of steel-type - or maybe a dark-type? either way, she'd have to take care what she did next. as the pokemon honed their claws, cait urged her companion to take action against the bird.

"bubble beam."

her primarina nodded, his head tilting up as he focused on gathering the necessary energies. eventually, he'd release a barrage of sparkling bubbles; their speed considerable and their individual size above average.

'we'll see how you are in battle,' cait thought, eager for her curiosity to be satiated as her gaze became fixed upon the bird.

"Corviknight," Gavin informs the gym leader, over the sound of talons on stone, "are native to Galar; relatively rare in Hoenn, still."[break][break]

As the Primarina readies its bubble beam, Gavin makes a quick decision.[break][break]

"Corviknight, close the gap and use Steel Wing! Take the attack!"[break][break]

Though it surely might have wondered why its trainer would send it willingly into danger, the Corviknight flares its glittering wings and flaps once, twice, three times to get itself airborne before diving through the path of Primarina's bubble beam and attempting to slam into the dual-type with its sharp-feathered steel wings.[break][break]

Bubbles burst against its body, scattering drops of water over the stones of the battlefield.

"galar," she echoed, cocking her head lightly to the side. "the galar region. i heard they were beginning to introduce some of their pokemon to hoenn."

cait had glanced over articles related to the subject, having acquired an interest once she had successfully obtained two species native to the distant and rarely heard of region.

"i look forward to seeing how they fair in battle."

its speed took both her and her primarina off guard, the use of steel wing that expertly sliced through the bubblebeam resulting in the first attack of their battle being delivered.

'well,' she thought. 'this is going to be interesting.'

her water-type floundered for a moment, the attack having impacted his middle. once he recovered, she hastily considered a plan of action.

'guess we'll try something with a bit more potency behind it.'

"sparkling aria," cait called, intent on testing the waters.

her pokemon raised themselves onto the tip of their fins, elegant in their display as their mane splayed out wildly behind them and a beam of power manifested - split apart into bubbles that were comparatively more study - and shot toward the flying-type.

'let's see if his pokemon can do the same thing with this attack.'

As it had closed the gap in order to attack its opponent, the metal bird is unable to escape from the second shower of bubbles. They burst against steel feathers and the Corviknight squawks in pain and ire, bunching its broad shoulders.[break][break]

"You're doing great," Gavin coaches.[break][break]

He could order it to go in for another attack with Steel Wing, but the gym leader would surely know to expect such an attack and perhaps anticipate it. The last thing Gavin wanted was to be predictable.[break][break]

"Drill Peck!"[break][break]

Corviknight ruffles its feathers, drops of water from the Primarina's attack sliding between them and causing the bird discomfort. However, upon the order of its master, the Galarian Pokemon crows before diving toward its opponent with a drill peck.

drill peck - once it came into contact with the water-type's flesh - resulted in a pitched noise tinged with anguish with a hint of outrage. despite their inherited temperament, the dual-type was often inspired to retaliated when inflicted with a certain amount of damage.

"try grabbing them, primarina."

the water-type sought to mimic a lover's embrace, his paws and lengthy arms seeking to secure themselves around the steel-type's broad neck. and while the bird was superior in height and width, he still possessed the size to manage an attempt.

"bubble beam!"

primarina pressed their face closer to the corviknight's beak, their mouth falling open as they sought to batter the creature's face with the bubbly barrage.

Most comfortable with aerial combat, it becomes clear that the Corviknight doesn't expect the Primarina's dangerous embrace. Though it attempts to hop backward in retreat, it's slower when not in the air; the dual-type is easily able to wrap its arms around the bird.[break][break]

"Retaliate; Steel Wing, shake it off."[break][break]

Corviknight thrashes in the Primarina's grip, struck by the full force of a close-quarters bubblebeam. Though the water doesn't dampen its metal feathers, it seeps into uncomfortable spots and wears the avian down. Still, there's fight in his bird yet.[break][break]

Though it struggles to fully extend its wings with limbs wrapped about its neck, the Corviknight does its best to batter the Primarina with the sharp edges of those steel wings in the hopes of fending it off.

the close quarters steel wing made for an unpleasant surprise - though could it really be considered as such? the bird was built to wield its steel-coated body as a weapon and the force behind the sharp blow revealed the potency present within each attack.

"keep holding on!"

unfortunately her primarina couldn't manage it, his soft and rubbery flesh only capable of enduring so much before he sought to separate himself from the source of his pain. the dual-type's gaze was sharp as he peered at his foe, a look of wariness settling across his beautiful features.

"let's try something else then. to the water, primarina," she said, hiding her disappointment.

her pokemon's eyes flashed in response to the order, excitement present within his tone of voice as he crooned his acknowledgement. with surprising ease he'd quickly slip into the water which bordered the field, the river roughly four to five yard lengths wide, surprisingly deep and very clear. primarina was easily seen once one positioned themselves high enough, but they now had the advantage of mobility now.

Gavin is satisfied as he watches the Primarina relent to its pain, its grip on the Corviknight's neck loosening and then slipping away entirely. He thinks perhaps this might be it, a perfect moment to finish off their ailing foe, when the gym leader surprises him by ordering her Pokemon into the water.[break][break]

What could she have in store? He knows only two of her moves — sparkling aria and bubblebeam — and finds his thoughts overwhelmed by the possibility of what others the dual-type may have access to.[break][break]

He won't falter.[break][break]

"Corviknight. Hone Claws, then up."[break][break]

He gestures with his hand, indicating that the bird should take to the skies. It quarks in affirmation and once again sharpens its attacking power, this time scraping the tips of its metal wings against the stone. The sound is grating, but Gavin remains composed as his bird carries out the order and then launches itself into the air, powerful wings beating gusts of air that ruffle the grasses.[break][break]

It spots its target beneath the water, angling toward it with a cry to alert its trainer to the Primarina's location.

cait observed the man's response to her simplistic tactic with great interest, her eyes alight with curiosity over his stratagem. it appeared as though they sought to take advantage of the dual-type's flight capabilities, the creature granted access to an ample view of the slim river as it sharpened its pointed talons.

'how do these birds hunt, i wonder?'

their claws appeared more than capable of gripping and she was briefly reminded of her own birds. she had observed them hunt once or twice before, the feathered creatures diving and plucking up their pray with a startling amount of ease.

"misty terrain," she called.

she needed more cover - and she needed it now. her primarina began to summon forth a mist that began to collect over the field and in a thin layer over the river. eventually he'd be able to properly conceal himself properly, but his attack had yet to properly congeal in a timely fashion.
