Gavin's the first to arrive at his next table, and the Archen who'd previously claimed a perch on his shoulder is equally quick to claim the table as their own. The previously-fossilized bird digs its talons into the sleek wood, but Gavin shoos it away from the food before it can sink its beak in.[break][break]

"That's not for you. And you better not shit on this table."[break][break]

It's his Lycanroc who alerts him to the approach of his next partner; a soft ruff rising in her throat as her tail slaps against the floor. It must be the smell of all the different dogs, for Gavin recognizes Kyle as a member of the Elite Four and a man he'd previously shared an unfortunate train ride with. He resolves to avoid that topic.[break][break]

"Looks like you've got a new fan," 'Patrick' remarks with a laugh, gesturing to his Lycanroc. A gesture from Gavin urges the Archen to hop back to his shoulder, leaving behind scars in the wood. "How's your night been so far? Patrick, by the way — we met, not sure if you remember?"[break][break]

Gavin thinks it's a hard thing to forget, but who knows.

kyle carries his mightyena to the next table by dragging it by its front legs, trying to make sure he doesn't get dog fur on his suit. he supposes he had too much fun with the spheal that he cannot move on afterwards.

he spots the lycanroc and causes his eyes to widen and a grin to form. and then he sees the trainer. he offers him a nod as he drops his mightyena halfway to the table, where it slouches and lies without energy, and take his seat.

"oh yeah, doctor, am i right?"

he tries to think of a conversation starter. nothing comes to mind besides the incident, most of which he doesn't really find appropriate to bring up in an event like this. the little that does, however, he blurts out.

so, i guess you and hannah weren't a thing? you two looked close back then."

Kyle seems delighted by the Lycanroc's presence, and combined with the familiarity between them, it's enough to keep Gavin relaxed in the presence of the Elite Four member.[break][break]

"In the PhD sense, not the hero sense, unfortunately."[break][break]

Had his life gone differently, maybe he would have turned his interests in biology into a medical degree, dedicated his life to saving lives instead of joining Rocket and often taking them.[break][break]

He chuckles at the question, shaking his head.[break][break]

"Oh, no. She's a lovely young woman, but we're partners only in business." 'Patrick' might've been warm to Hannah, but had they been alone, Gavin would have shown his true colors. "What about you? Popular as you are, I'd have thought you'd find yourself tied down ages ago."

kyle follows it up with an awkward laugh.

no one has actually asked him out, or even asked him about matters concerning romance until lately anyways. then again, he wasn't really popular up until he was assigned to being an elite four.

not that he minded though. being single was fun for the most part, at least.

"i didn't see you as the kind of person to be participating in these kinds of events though." he crosses his legs, eyes on patrick as he waits for the answer for his following question intently. "got any reason why you're here?"

He's seen the sorts of people that lust after their idols with no regard for a sane approach. Patrick Cavalli was as yet an unknown name in the league circuit, and he did not like the idea of having fans. Gavin Merlino, at least, was a ghost.[break][break]

Gavin laughs, sharp.[break][break]

"Oh, I'm not," he agrees, then proceeds to lie through his teeth. "My assistant signed me up as a prank, told me I needed to get out and meet people. Really, it's the free food that convinced me."[break][break]

He takes a sip of his coffee, his other hand lazily scratching the Lycanroc behind her ears.[break][break]

"What about you? You don't exactly seem the type, either."

the question requests an answer he cannot reveal so casually for these kinds of events since it breaks immersion and dulls the essence for such dates for the other party. kyle gives him a half truth.

"just wanna try something new, you know? you don't often get a chance to do these sort of things."

again, kyle follows it up with an awkward laugh. the laugh ends with a sigh.

"i probably should've just slept at home though. even the alcohol isn't helping with the talking stuff."

kyle has avoided drinking more alcohol since the start of the event. he has been tipsy since then, shutting down some of his inhibitions to allow a more talkative side of him leak out. he likes to keep it at its current reasonable level.

"you're having fun at least though, right?"

Gavin nods. He doesn't usually participate in these sorts of things himself, so he's not sure how common they are, but this one had been well-advertised in preparation for the Valentines season.[break][break]

He tilts his head at the sigh.[break][break]

It had been hard to summarize the so-called 'dog boy' of the Elite Four when they'd been narrowly defying death on a train, beyond the fact that his companion Noah had been the more sociable. Now, a picture is painted of a man whose fame attracted far more attention than he seems to want. Gavin makes note of this, intrigued as always by human nature.[break][break]

"Oh, yes, I've been having a great night," he confirms, sipping at his coffee. "Some advice: don't worry about how much or how little you're talking. There's barely enough time in these things to begin with — and there goes the bell, with perfect timing. Just focus on having a good night, and maybe the free food. See you around, Kyle."[break][break]

He offers a friendly smile, then disappears into the crowd of shifting participants.

he smiles at his words. he might as well take the advice of someone who is in the same predicament as him with more gravity than someone that wasn't.

"see you too," he calls back.

no one else seems to get his attention so far, even when he takes a look at the other tables. then again, someone already currently holds his affections that he as well might have just actually slept at home instead.

going to this event was a mistake. patrick was right. free food was the mentality to go for.

he disperses from the table and onto the next match.
