it had not taken long for him to get a response on his enquiry regarding elijah, the gap between their last meeting and now was entirely down to marcel's schedule. though rocket was thriving, his workload betrayed the smaller--but by no means weaker--numbers that came with their purge.

an increase in the demand for galarian pokemon has led to farms like these. the cute appearances of wooloo make them popular pets, easy money, though an unexpected decline in their numbers prompted the need for an overseer. while the man who ran this was reliable enough, he wasn't a true member of rocket; he too was under suspicion.

the space borders on cramped, the sheep pokemon more often than not find themselves bumping into marcel's legs. some seem to be trying to climb over the fence. marcel spares them a glance before pulling out his phone, sending a text to the number he's told to be elijah's. this job would be far more tolerable with company.

the text arrives on a lazy day for elijah. he's fished out of the pool of some midday nap, his slumped body draped over a couch like a drying sardine. but the name of sender is enough to help him straighten his back.

he arrives to see the wooloo herding around marcel. elijah sees no need for yamper. just bring a marcel.

"look at you. a natural." elijah strolls over, sturdy leg awkwardly hoisted over the fence, for he ignores the gate. or simply did not see it. "it's shitty of me- but i've forgotten your name."

he huffs out a laugh, half-amused. a wooloo latches onto his trouser leg by its teeth; his answer comes as he tries to shake it off. "call me kosuke." the pokemon holds firm.

"someone's been stealing the wooloo," he explains, "don't know who yet, but we've gotta have our own people mind them in the meantime."

he has to resort to grabbing the sheep pokemon and giving it a few tugs, trying to encourage it to let go without tearing his clothes. "you know, i'm half tempted to let 'em steal the little bastards."

the name rings slightly untrue. or unfamiliar. elijah isn't sure. time wears away at the memory, replacing details with the shadows of senses.

he chalks it up to only having worked with the man once- and the darkness of that museum basement.

"then why don't we do just that?" elijah squeezes himself into the crowd of wool. "trimming the fat. preventing overpopulation." he grumbles. "'cause i'd do the same to hoenn if i could. remove the uglies."

suddenly, the wooloo stop. they begin to bleat in shivering staccatos. like a receding tide, the sheep push backwards, as if to keep away from the fence. still, the space is too small for their retreat to be proper.

several figures dart around in the pastoral foreground. their shapes are hard to place- just like names.

"people? or pokemon?" elijah mutters under his breath. his hand cups the pokeball holding his victreebel. "hopefully you didn't call me over 'cause you're bad at battling."

like elijah, he's unable to identify the figures that approach. his eyes narrow in concentration as he tries to get a better look--it takes a moment for elijah's words to filter through. he grins. "no promises."

the group closes in around them. a tense silence settles as neither parties make a move--it doesn't take long for marcel to grow weary of the standoff.
[break][break]he tosses two pokeballs into the air, setting off the fray.

A PACK OF THIEVUL dart in and out of the brush. marcel maeda's noivern, vega, will be quick to discern that one of the wooloo has been marked with a scent. the scent draws the foxes in, attracting more as dark, cherry-red figures begin to hide among the brush. there's an alarming number of them, and they use such an advantage to surround the enclosure.[break][break]

"there's a fuckton of these." elijah casts out his victreebel, ahead of the fencing. "invasive species?"

the sheer amount of thievul makes it difficult for them to mask their identities. there is no need for their inherent guises when they can overwhelm in numbers.

a marked wooloo bleats. it senses all the eyes trained on it- and its brethren.

"llere, leaf tornado. scare them back." the thievul begin their advance.

his victreebel screeches. its thick peristome quivers as leaves shoot out before it, storming around in a frenzy. several leap back, but some still manage to breach the sharp, leafy gale.

"kosuke, are getting paid for this or what?"

"and here i thought you were here out of good will." though he remains focused on the cluster of thievul closest to them, there's a small quirk to his mouth. "jupiter--" the electivire moves beside him with heavy steps, "--electroweb."

two balls of electricity form at the palms of his electivire; it takes aim, and throws. as they travel through the air, the orbs crackle morph into a web-like structure, stretching out to link with each other. the ELECTROWEB manages to encase the group of thievul taking the head, though the others still lie in wait.

"don't worry," he says as he scans the field, "you'll get paid." he might have said more, but marcel gets distracted by a cry from his noivern; he turns to find her sniffing curiously at one of the wooloo. "vega, what are you doing?!" his voice rises as the noivern uses her jaws to grip the wooloo firmly by its wool, shaking the bleating pokemon around.

as the noivern thrashes the sheep about in its jaws, elijah snorts.

"yeah, i'll get paid." he cocks his head toward the flailing wooloo. "and you won't."

his victreebel continues its work. as the gale of leaves spirals outward, a SLEEP POWDER accompanies it. carried by the sharp wind, the lethargy begins to settle like dandelion seeds, forcing the remaining thievul to scurry out of their hiding places. some find themselves ensnared by the electric webbing: a hasty escape into a corral of their own.

elijah grumbles. he pushes himself toward the dragon. attempting to force a hand underneath the noivern's palate, he seethes, "let go of the merch!" elijah flashes marcel a skeptical colour, "did you forget to feed it?"

while most of the thievul have been taken care of, a few stragglers still remain. the fox pokemon slink towards vega and begin nipping at the wooloo's heels, pulled in by some inexplicable force. were marcel better-versed in pokemon behaviour, he might have caught on. instead, he mutters to himself as he releases his dragonair. "thunder wave."

as the theivul drop to the ground, he moves to wrestle the pokemon out of vega's grip. a few sharp words have her letting go with a huff, her tail slapping the floor in annoyance.

"there," he holds out the wooloo with a doubtful expression, "job done."

"easy job." elijah hoists the wooloo into his arms. the default sculpt of his scowl causes the sheep pokemon to recoil— but its arrest is brief. a quick inspection finds no real wounds and so, the wooloo is dropped. "thanks for being competent."

he looks at the thievul littering the ground. grimacing, the apothecary wonders if he has stumbled upon a field of war.

"kosuke, what prompted you to call me instead of anyone else?" elijah says. "you know all i do is grow plants."

vega provides a welcome distraction, butting marcel's shoulder with her head. his hands move to scratch at the scruff of her next; he can't bring himself to properly scold her for earlier. perhaps she's sensed it.

"rocket's changing," he says, "the old guard needs to stick together, don't you think?"

that marcel's friends come few and far between, that people he had once loathed, or thought nothing much of, have become some strange comfort, and that this, in some way, was a hand outstretched, were all truths marcel decides are better left unsaid.
