A vicious sandstorm blows through the desert, obscuring the horizon. It settles in their hair and on their clothes, tiny grains finding every inconvenient place to hide. Gavin throws up an arm to protect his eyes, free hand grasping for a Pokeball.[break][break]

A golden Steelix erupts from the earth with a mighty roar.[break][break]

"Get control of this bloody weather!" Gavin demands, unintentionally reverting to his Galarian roots in frustration. He coughs and spits. "Sandstorm!"[break][break]

It's suddenly as if they're standing in the eye of a hurricane, sand whirling around them but unable to penetrate where his Steelix has laid her claim. Gavin continues to spit sand from his mouth, brushing it from his clothes and out of his hair.

Under the wings of an Aerodyctal, Rex had some kind of cover, though sand still somehow found its way to his mouth. In this situation, he actually didn't bother to talk, not that the silence would last long the moment the Steelix managed to tame the storm.

One nearly looked completely brown thanks to the sand coating it, and promptly shook like a dog, immediately coating Rex in the very thing he was trying to avoid. "Ah! Just mess me up, why don't you, One!?" He spat, hands shaking up his sand-clogged hair as he desperately tried not to swallow the dry sand. His irritation was so recent, he didn't even have time to comment on the shiny Steelix, though he'd later wonder if all shinies were gold.

"Hey, ya mind telling me what the hell we're doing here, before I have to say something about that "bloody"? We're looking for...rocks, right?"

Another glob of gritty spit joins the endless sea of sand, and Gavin wipes his mouth with a disgusted expression.[break][break]

"I've spent time in Galar," he says by way of explanation, before Rex can be tempted to ask regardless. "Bound to have picked up some habits here and there. And yes — sort of. I'm mostly looking for fossils, but our employers want us to look for evolutionary stones, mega stones, that kind of junk."[break][break]

Not that mega stones were 'junk', but he was far more interested in expanding his fossil collection, which is precisely why he'd volunteered himself to go.[break][break]

Steelix maintains control of the swirling storm, allowing them freedom of movement in small areas at a time. Gavin sends out his Lycanroc, who seems utterly unaffected by the howling winds and sands.[break][break]

"Help dig, girl," is the instruction she receives, before Gavin turns to Rex and points out the faint shapes of ruins in the sand. "Used to be something here; not sure what, but it's as good a place as any to start."[break][break]

He kneels down in the sand and does just that.

"Galar?...Eh, you look the travel type." Rex commented, smart people always looked the type, he supposed. They actually had time to live in other places, he himself thought he'd never leave Hoenn. "Weird curses...

So they were getting sand in their eyes over that? "Ugh, and they couldn't send us with a Gardevoir or nothing, couldn't day. Buncha rocks better mean something good."

He didn't linger long in the helping department, but not him personally, "Hey One, what are you standing around for? It's gonna take forever if we let that mutt do the work, get in there!" He commanded, doing nothing to actually assist as the prehistoric beast hesitatingly stepped forward, and promptly used Ancientpower to start lifting the sand into clumps that swirled around it, clinging them away with flaps of its wings.

Huh. Smart.

Gavin scoffs out a laugh. Wasn't that the truth?[break][break]

"I am," he confirms. "Been everywhere at least once. You think Galar's bad, you should spend time in Unova."[break][break]

Providing no further context, the scientist eagerly gets to the task at hand. Rex seems far less thrilled with their mission than Gavin was, complaining about their transport as he commanded his Aerodactyl to do the heavy lifting. To its credit, the prehistoric avian does a good job: rocks lift to expose the bones of the ruin beneath, some ancient and collapsed structure.[break][break]

Gavin picks up a rock and squints at it, looking for any sign of fossilized imprints on its surface.[break][break]

"Gardevoir or no, we'd still have ended up with sand in our boots," he points out, belated and distant. "We'd teleport right into the middle of the storm."

Why'd he have to deal with someone being so, so reasonable? Rex scoffed and sidled up to One, saying no more regarding the subject of travel. Unfortunately, he still had plenty more to complain about.

As if sensing that it was about time for him to do something, Rex sighed loudly and knelt next to One's efforts. "Why couldn't you take longer to dig?" He grumbled, staring long and hard as the sand almost magically seemed to float away.

He dug his hands into shallow sand, grumbling loud and intelligible snarls as he came across a bumpy rock. "It's so hot! Dammit!" He jerked back, managing to expose a weird looking rock, wedged too much into ruins for him to pull out without too much damage...and He wasn't that stupid to pull.

"What's this now?"

Though he's far too entrenched in his own digging to catch Rex's muttered comments, he does turn his head at a sudden exclamation of pain.[break][break]

"The rock?" He didn't expect Rex was complaining about the sand; it was hot beneath the baking sun, but nothing unbearable. Gavin squints at the buried stone, but it's too coated in sand to get a good look at it. "If it's hot, it could be a fire stone. That's good, that's the kind of thing they want us to find."[break][break]

He gets the attention of his Lycanroc with a whistle, and indicates that she should dig around the stone. The heat seems to bother her less than it had Rex, thanks to her stony fur.[break][break]

"Hm. Do any of your Pokemon have Rock Polish?" The scientist palms a Pokeball containing his Omastar. "If not, I can get mine to Hydro Pump, but we'll need to stand back a fair bit."

A Fire Stone, in a desert. Like they weren't hot enough. Guess getting burned was his reward for doing something.

At Gavin's question, Rex takes out another Pokeball, cringing as his palm aches in protest, "Nah, I got a guy with Chip Away...that fine?" He tossed the Pokeball as he spoke, not waiting for an answer before a cute little dino popped out in a flash, snorting competitively at Gavin. "Tough little guy, this one! How about it?

Three wasn't the most careful creature in the world, but it could definitely follow instructions and, if given the go ahead, would join the Lycanroc by chipping away at surrounding stone.

Gavin scratches beneath his chin, lips pursed in thought. "Are they capable of restraint? This requires a somewhat delicate touch; we wouldn't want to damage the stone."[break][break]

Rex sends out a Cranidos, which doesn't exactly ease Gavin's mind. He knows that certain Pokemon can be trained to be capable of things outside their regular natures, however, and carefully reserves judgement.[break][break]

Lycanroc continues to dig carefully around the heated object, turning in circles and readjusting her position every so often in typical canine fashion. It would be a slow-going process without the help of Rex's Pokemon; Gavin quietly hopes to be proven wrong.

"Hey, you hear that, Three?" Rex turned harshly towards the Cranidos, a sort of sneer already on his face, "If you hit that stone and screw up, your no longer my number three, got it?" The Pokemon, used to being in herds of its kind, was terrified. Even if Cranidos fought to prove their dominance, they only survived by the herd. Thus, what it heard was that Rex would no longer keep it in the herd if it failed in this. [break][break]

The Cranidos stiffly walked over, watching for a long moment before it got to work. Although its movements were jerky, the fear seemed very motivational for the little dino. Chip Away was working, its back claws clearing away debris while staying far, far away from the stone. [break][break]

"See? I control my guys great."

Fear seems to be a good motivator for Rex's Pokemon to take abnormal precautions against damaging the buried Fire Stone, and that's good enough for Gavin.[break][break]

"I wasn't questioning your effectiveness," he points out, having risen from where he'd been crouched in the sand to watch their Pokemon work. His arms are folded, head tilted. "Merely your Pokemon's intelligence, which certainly doesn't appear to be lacking."[break][break]

Lycanroc seems excited to have help, offering the Cranidos a sharp bark of greeting as she continues to worry at the ever-growing divet.[break][break]

"Steelix can command the storm for a while longer. Shall we keep looking?"

Rex sniffed, crossing his arms, "Yeah...Three is pretty dumb, but it knows when I'm serious." Rex admitted, remembering everything about the Cranidos. The little thing barely tried to dodge attacks and sometimes did things without him saying, it was infuriating. Still, he was glad Three knew enough to actually follow the job. [break][break]

Continue the job? [break][break]

Rex grimaced, still feeling the sand under his clothes, "Is there anything exciting here? Cause if we're gonna find another rock, I got better things to do." Like sleeping, or selling Pokemon.

Gavin finds it odd that Rex numbers his Pokemon, where others might give them proper names. Why bother with something so impersonal? He'd never fallen into the habit of nicknaming his own companions, for it ran the risk of getting too attached, too quickly.[break][break]

Rex seems utterly unimpressed by their situation, and Gavin sighs.[break][break]

"It depends on whether you classify fossils as 'rocks'," he replies, already back to kneeling in the sand and brushing aside hot sands. "Besides, our employer might be disappointed if we don't come back with more."

An oddity, Rex actually stayed quiet for a second, "No...they're not rocks. T-they're Pokemon." He clammed up, somehow not knowing what to say next, nothing clever or mean. He...really didn't want to make the boss mad, he liked him, he thought he liked him too. To lose that trust felt like he was losing something incredibly important, even if the boss never heard. [break][break]

Maybe in that manner, Three and him were very much alike. [break][break]

"Dammit, get out of the way, man, you're gonna burn yourself. One, c'mon, you help!" Rex ordered impatiently, "If I get in trouble, so do you! Ancientpower!" Immediately, seeing as Three was being so careful, One started clearing sand, clawing at any difficult obstructions that weren't valuable.
