[attr="class","athread"]It wasn’t often that Annie found herself in Mauville. On her worst days, the region’s heart played a special role in her life. It attracted tourists, the affluent, the gambles, all with loose pockets that she helped free up… But she had long since renounced those days, promised herself that she would be better.

It had been months since she’d deigned the city with her presence because of that, and she doubted that many would even notice she was there. The rooftop’s swarms of supernatural Pokemon made it unappealing to most, but for the inner-city trainer, it was the best training ground for miles. Just what she needed.

Her Delphox took the stage, and with a nod from his master, he raised his wand towards the sky. Sunny Day intensified the rays of light shining down on them, no doubt rousing a few wilds from their slumber. The girl in the tracksuit was counting on a few of them taking poorly to it; the beasts agitated enough to approach were often the most interesting.

katherine was alone atop of this rooftop.

or, well. so it seemed to her. something certainly changed in that perspective of the rocket grunt as soon as the skies cleared and clouds were penetrated by rays of light, causing her 'arena' to grow warmer and sunnier. the snowy-haired trainer turned and her mismagius did so as well, only to find annie not too far away from her standing with a delphox by her side.

she wasn't alone after all. they had company. and maybe some competition over the pokemons who will soon arrive to contest this spectacle of lights. frankly, kat wasn't all too found of it either-- but she did see the goal behind it. it would draw them out. the waiting period was bound to be shorter. for a trainer that young, they were definitely smarter than she expected them to be.

"i'm kat," she introduced herself, her lips stretching slightly into a smile. "and this one here is mismagius. i guess we'll be sharing this roof for a while."

It wasn’t until Annie checked her pocket and confirmed the presence of a Pokeball that she realised she was seeing a coincidence and little more. “You scared me for a second with-“ She quickly shook her head. “Never mind. Name’s Annie Mei! Trainer extraordinaire. This is Hocus-“ A hand introduced the Delphox, and then gestured to the Haunter shielding his eyes. “And that’s our next catch! Knock ‘em dead, buddy! Well, not totally dead, but you get the idea!”

The wizard got to work long before she finished speaking. His wand summoned flames as he drew a circle in the air. The completed ring became a portal, sending a stream of fire rushing to meet the ghost. Enhanced by solar power, it was enough to send the ghoul falling to the floor, down but not quite out. That was more than enough for Annie, and more importantly, the Pokeball she threw.

While it counted down to confirmation, she turned back to the woman, tapping a finger against her bottom lip. “Hm. I have an idea. I was going to have Hocus and Pocus come out and train together, but… Pocus is a Mismagius too. And I’m starting to think maybe your guy could take her place! It might help with this comp I’m stuck on, at least.”

"annie mei," katherine repeats, a habit of hers. she preferred to pronounce someone's name when they were introducing themselves for the first time. it was the easiest way to avoid mispronouncing it after all. "nice to meet you. i am katherine. but you can call me kat." no last name. mostly because it felt too formal to include. she glanced at the delphox next-- just before the fox shifted his attention to the haunter who was supposed to be their trainer's next catch.

"not a bad job. not a bad job at all. maybe you weren't joking about the extraordinaire part." the rocket grunt chuckles, noticing the lickilicky from the corner of her eyes. it did not interest her all that much, thus, it was not pursued further. not by her at least. instead she opted to focus on the process of the haunter being captured. the confirmation had yet to be heard, but once more, annie turned to face kat. "oh, i see." the names made sense. "it's a girl. mismagius, i mean. but yes, i am sure she wouldn't mind. would you?" the witch pokemon merely floated from one side to another. whereas some would be comfortable with a mere shake of their head, mismagius tended to go all the way.

it was one of the many things that attracted kat to her partner when she was given the option to choose them as her first pokemon, back when mismagius was only a young misdreavus.

"as long as you're fine with sharing what we find, yeah?" kat really hoped she wouldn't have to argue or fight with a teenager over a pokemon. but who knows.

[attr="class","athread"]A smug smirk questioned why the girl would ever need to joke about her skill. Her Delphox shuffled forward to return the Pokeball to her tracksuit pocket. “Thanks, pal. And no worries about sharing! There’s always going to be enough to go around.” As if to prove her point, another pair showed themselves, stirred from their slumber and none too happy about it.

The Klefki was the obvious choice for a fiery strike; Hocus awaited the green light to melt it down. And yet, Annie’s gaze was on the ghost, her furrowed brow betraying a mind at work. “We need to work on your coverage, for a start,” she muttered. “A Heat Wave won’t leave much for our friend, so go for a Psybeam on the Dreepy!” The magician’s stick pointed straight at his target, subjecting it to rainbow rings that could both hurt and confuse. It wasn’t quite as strong at the flames before it, but for a Pokemon known for being laughably weak, it was enough to send it back into the dreamland.

“See, I really like the idea of these two working together. Hocus and Pocus, the wizard and the witch… But I don’t think they’re reaching their potential together. They’re like puzzle pieces. Some of the sides fit together, but the others-“ She narrowed her eyes. “That’s not how puzzle pieces work, is it? …Bad analogy. More like…” She clasped her hands together, interlocking fingers showing the tight-knit team she strived for. “This! Instead of-“ The hands came apart and re-joined, but as a self-handshake instead. “That. If that makes sense. It might not make sense outside of my head.”

the dreepy is taken by the delphox, which seemed to bring a smile to katherine's face. if only because the other pokemon captured the attention of the rocket grunt far more. a klefki. it might've not be an essential addition to kat's team, but she certainly found it cute enough to make an exception.

"mismagius," a chant escaped through the lips of the witch pokemon, words uttered in its mischievous language of spells. "how about you take that one? they seem eager for a fight just as much as we are!" the purple pokemon delightfully floated closer towards the key chain pokemon, who seemed rather aggressive due to the circumstances of being disturbed in its slumber. "use shadow ball. don't aim it too close to them." was kat purposefully asking her partner to miss? because it certainly left that impression. the gathering of shadows is quick, they are amassed into a sphere just as the klefki charges a beam of green light.

the sphere is shot alongside the beam, around the very same moment. "now! use phantom force and avoid her beam! make sure to smack them -right- into the shadow ball, alright?" it happens all very quickly, but it seems as if kat's plan is successful. mismagius chants and a portal opens behind her, which swallows her whole. the dual-type pokemon appears to be confused slightly, and before it realizes what is happening, it is struck by mismagius who shouts her name as loud as she could, emerging from another portal that opened beside klefki.

it finds itself flying away - and the shadow ball hits them then, knocking them unconscious.

"great job. but we can improve the speed on that." mismagius turned away at that comment, leaving kat to throw her pokeball at the fallen wild pokemon.

"i think i get it. there's some synergy, but it isn't perfect." katherine tries to find logic in the hand gestures rather than the analogy itself - which did confuse her a bit. "i get it. some of my pokemons don't compliment each other all too well either. their types are like, not meant to fight on the same side. you know?" she thought of hatenna and salazzle. the latter certainly did not appreciate being defeated by the small psychic type. whenever they were out together, it seemed like a repeat of their first fight was about to happen. "but i also think that despite that, you can train your partners to work with each other despite their differences. i mean, even if their fighting styles don't fit each other. or their personalities are too conflicting. you can find a common ground. ..usually."

but in that case, wasn't it just easier to find them different partners? maybe. probably.

There was an edge of arrogance there, because- “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that you were trying to impress me with all that!” She let the words hand in the air for just long enough for the woman to show offence before she went on. “I’m kidding. Or am I? Seriously though, good job!” Her hands settled themselves on her hips as she gave her analysis.

“I haven’t experimented much with Phantom Force, but every time I face it is a pain in my ass. One guy I was up against used it to get both of his Pokemon out of danger. It’s a good surprise double attack that way, on top of being a quick dodge. I wonder what it looks like to the Pokemon…” She shook her head again. “Getting off track. It’d be super-good if you paired Mismagius with a brawler that couldn’t close the gap, but I guess it could work well with Hocus too, right?” Her partner gave a quiet drawl that she seemed to take as affirmation. It was only when she followed his gaze that she saw that the newcomers had distracted him. Annie barely gave them a second glance. “Nothing special; don’t bother.” The fox folded his arms, ruminating on battle plans of his own.

“Anyway, finding pairs that don’t seem like they should work is fun! It keeps the enemy guessing, and finding new ways to make Pokemon shine is how top trainers are made. I’ll give away one of my trade secrets for free – my Ludicolo and Alolan Raichu wrecked a gym leader’s duo!” A slight exaggeration, of course. By the end of the match only one of her partners was still standing, but nobody had expected the battle to end as quickly as it did. “Stuff like that is fun to show off, and it keeps people on their toes, so I’ll keep working on more of them.” There was an unmistakable pride in her work, and why wouldn’t there be? Battling was her claim to fame, and one of the reasons she’d survived so long.

it would be a lie to say that katherine didn't try a bit harder than usual due to the company she had. but that wasn't a bad thing, was it?

"it's good practice," kat excuses, not wanting to sound as if she enjoyed hearing the compliment. despite feeling that way. however, it was only a wild pokemon mismagius and her were fighting. it wasn't a big deal. "but still, thank you. mismagius is definitely good at what they do." and as if on cue, the ghost-type arrives and returns to stand beside her trainer. a portal akin to the one that was used moments ago opens beneath the pokeball, causing it to fall - as an identical portal opens in front of kat, who catches the pokeball without allowing it to drop. "thanks."

"i really like it. there are a lot of things that can be done with it, a few i probably haven't considered even." dodging attacks, attacking, doing so together, carrying another pokemon through the portal - it was all possible. the tactic a trainer employed along with a move usually determined how smart they truly were. at least when it came to official battles. "-i have a few pairs i'm proud of too," although kat wasn't so eager to share her own secrets with a stranger. "wrecked a gym leader's duo? does that mean you've challenged one already?"

she wasn't too young or anything to do so but... booking a fight took so long. katherine couldn't help but be surprised by such a fact. "i assume you won then. which badge do you have?" she poked further, keen on seeing it for herself. nevertheless, the thought of annie owning multiple badges never once crossed katherine's mind.

much like annie's delphox, mismagius kept her eyes on the new pokemons who came to complain about the noise and their sleep being disturbed. fortunately, neither of them seemed confident enough to challenge them. their conversation, at this very moment, remained undisturbed. good. kat could certainly use a tip or two for when she finally challenges a gym leader.

Stuff like this is why I’m glad I run into other trainers.” Few could deny Annie’s battle prowess, but part of being a good trainer was always learning. Constant battles were as good a method as any for that, but sometimes a little chat with a stranger worked just as well. The insights made her smile grow, and likewise, the Delphox’s – though he seemed more amused than anything.

Before Kat had finished asking about the gyms, her lips took a turn for the cocky. Never one to miss a chance to announce the fact, she answered: “Four! And going for more, but that’s not a priority right now.” She nodded, as if the confirmation was needed to believe her. “That’s enough to take on the Elite Four, so I’m gearing up to take them down, and then-“ Wiggling fingers made a rainbow in the air as she finished. “Champion of Hoenn. If all goes to plan, anyway! If I’ve gotten this far, then I figure that I’ve got a good shot.”

The sun’s rays retreated as their initial move wore off, but it’d served its purpose well. Even the region’s night owls had come out to watch the girls talk. Annie didn’t deem the pair important enough to stop talking, and so it was left to Hocus to shoo them away with swatting motions and disgruntled barks.

for a moment, katherine was certain that annie was joking. pulling a prank on her maybe. four badges at her age? it wasn't unheard of, sure... but it was extremely not common. not often someone who's young is capable of training pokemons well by themselves, let alone teach themselves and their partners the right course of battling. "that's... impressive. and a lot more than i thought you'd have honestly." but perhaps kat was giving too much credit for the gym leaders. maybe they weren't as strong as many were led to believe. her included.

"champion of hoenn. hm, hm. i am not sure about that... but it's good that you already have such a big goal. you'd probably be the youngest champion in history." truthfully, she didn't see it happening any time soon. perhaps in the future, after annie's grown, but it seemed impossible for the league to accept such a young champion, regardless of their supposed talents.

the newly arrived pair of pokemons lingered around the area for a short while before hocus shooed them away, drawing kat's attention for a moment and not a second longer. neither of them appealed to the rocket grunt, thus she had nothing to request from mismagius. "i intend to make my first challenge soon. well, sign up for it, i mean. the waiting lists are fairly long..." one of her fingers idly scratched at her cheek, "it's part of the reason as to why i am here. i've been searching a specific pokemon for a long time now, and i figured it'd be nice to check other places."
