a curiously mirthless smile tugs at the corners of cait's lips, her gaze narrowing upon the weary canine as it struggled to remain alert.

"tangrowth," she calls. "you know what to do."

the pokemon hesitates briefly, her gaze fixed upon the weary beast. her mistress blamed her immediate lack of action upon herself, cait having often encouraged the pokemon to maintain her gentle temperament.

"go on."

the verbal nudge resulted in a power whip slithering itself from her mass, the glowing whips thrusting themselves forward to secure themselves around the pokemon's slim waist. her intentions became obvious if she proved successful, for she'd harshly slam the beast into the floor in an attempt at rendering it unconscious.

Emma's expression is not swayed by the mirthless smile she receives. In fact, the smile isn't even for her, she guesses. The gym leaders focus is on the battle, on winning, and Emma is entirely prepared to squash the anticipation.[break][break]

And it's the Tangrowth's hesitation that brings their opening. It gives Hades an edge to react where he might not have been fast enough.[break][break]

"Protect. Retaliate."[break][break]

The Lycanroc snarls with ferocity, saliva spraying from his blackened lips as he raises his arms to deflect and PROTECT against the POWER WHIP. He isn't going down here, not while his opponent is still conscious.[break][break]

In the process, he's hoped to have blown back the Tangrowth with the deflection, preparing for his next move.

tangrowth bodily flinches as her vines bounce harmlessly off the protect, her round eyes betraying her alarm as well as her bemusement. eventually she'd release a gurgling noise, the sound apologetic as she recognized her error.

'it's okay,' cait soothed, internally. 'we'll work on it.'

while the gym leader's thoughts perhaps didn't reach the tangrowth, the grass-type sought to recover and make up for her mistake. she expertly wielded her vines without having to be told, seeking to batter the canine with the glowing appendages by use of power whip.

It's in the flinch that Hades lunges. The second incoming power whip would connect because no guard would ensure it - but he was too focused to let the pain hinder him. He had hit his second-wind and he was aiming to finish this.[break][break]

So he bares his teeth and attempts to grapple with the Tangrowth through her flailing limbs, teeth seeking something vital. The crunch was intended to fasten around her throat or crush tentacles long enough to make the Pokemon pass out. He wasn't aiming to kill because that hadn't been Emma's order.[break][break]

But he was growing tired of this back and forth. Emma expected a win, and he would deliver it.

the crunch resulted in tangrowth's consciousness abruptly blinking out, the vines that hugged closely to their mysteriously-shaped body possessing a complex network that involved her circulatory system. and while the outer layers could be trimmed or damaged without issue, these proved comparatively more sensitive.

tangrowth tipped over silently, her eyes falling shut and her form frightfully still. cait appeared mildly alarmed by her sudden fall, but she schooled her features well enough and raised her hand.

"call your pokemon off," she said, her tone firm and brimming with a hint of concern. "you've won."

The moment the Tangrowth went limp in his jaws, the Lycanroc released pressure. The damage done to the poor Pokemon's vines and growths had been mostly unintentional, a casualty of Hades' final plight.[break][break]

Emma is quick to call him away from the fainted Pokemon at Cait's request, though the werewolf had not intended to cause further harm as it was. He was not ordered to kill, after all.[break][break]

She detects the hint of concern in Cait's voice and she herself hesitates. The callous exterior she presents crumbles ever so slightly at the prospect that she might be considered too intense or questionable.[break][break]

"My apologies, miss Alfric. We fight harder than we intend."[break][break]

It's survival.[break][break]

But she does not approach the woman, instead returning her gaze to the Lycanroc as he returns to her side.
