He doesn't often find himself in Fortree. In spite of it's relative closeness, geographically, to the town of Fallarbor in which Gavin lived, the forested city was a place he knew little of.[break][break]

The gym, at least, is easy to find.[break][break]

As Patrick Cavalli, he enters without fear of recognition or consequence. To the league, he is nothing more than an aspiring challenger. As per the request when dealing with non-traditional battles, he'd brought along his favoured flying-type. Corviknight's ball rests easily in his hand as he glances around the Sanctuary, awaiting the appearance of the gym leader.

Today was another slow day at the Sanctuary—and this time, thankfully, nothing too urgent was going down.[break][break]

While the front-desk receptionist had a record of who was coming by for the next few days, he looked up in surprise to see that he wasn’t alone in the area anymore.[break][break]

“Oh, Mr. Cavalli? Give me a moment, he’ll be out in five minutes,” the receptionist greeted, quickly sending a message over the intercom. It took less than five minutes for the man of the hour himself to show up, taking off a pair of latex gloves and disposing of them in one of the trash cans behind the receptionist’s desk.[break][break]

“Sorry if I kept you waiting,” Alexei apologized. “Let’s get going, I wouldn’t want to take up most of your time—how are you liking the Gym circuit so far? Which was the most challenging gym you’ve encountered? Are you going for all the badges?”[break][break]

He couldn’t help it, he wanted to check out the challenger scene, too.

'Five minutes,' Gavin is told, and he nods, fully expecting to be kept far longer than that.[break][break]

Instead, the gym leader emerges before the fourth minute is upon them and apologies in spite of his early arrival. Though Gavin doesn't care in the slightest, Patrick Cavalli offers a warm laugh and a dismissive flick of his wrist.[break][break]

"Not at all." He's more than content to walk and talk, the wind ruffling his hair as they emerge into the outdoors. "It's been all right, though it can be hard to find the time to issue challenges. I'd say that the weather gym atop Mount Chimney was the most entertaining, as well as the biggest challenge. I've heard its leader might be stepping down... unfortunate."

“It’s a shame, too—they had such an interesting theme going for their Gym,” he hummed, betraying no sign of surprise that another one of the Gym Leaders was stepping down and retiring. “If you’d encountered Miss Stormy, and challenged her Gym before she was promoted, you’d do well to duck because she can get really intense.”[break][break]

Of course, he’d already met her as a challenger, and boy what they did was insane.[break][break]

Now that they were outside, he reached into his jacket for a thin chain and pulled out a thin whistle. “Get ready to fly, because we’re going to start real soon. I hope you can handle extreme weather conditions,” he added a few moments later as he blew a single note into it.[break][break]

The fluttering of countless wings soared overhead, a sign that his Flying (and not-so-Flying)-type Pokémon were coming down to watch what insanity was going to happen. At the same time, he clipped a hands-free earpiece while he had his back turned, already sending instructions—to prepare the weather change.[break][break]

“Get your flying companion out, please, and let’s get started.”[break][break]

Right then and there, a smattering of rain began to pour. Noticeably absent from the flock of Flying Pokémon that had clustered around the field were the ones that, quite predictably, knew Rain Dance.[break][break]

“I hope you don’t mind flying through a thunderstorm!” he added a few moments later, as the light drizzle from earlier intensified.

"Ah, yes." Gavin nods. "The newly appointed Elite Four, right? I haven't had the pleasure."[break][break]

With any luck, he'd continue to avoid any encounters with the woman. Having to dance around Lopez during the train mission had been stressful enough. He remembers her gym, however: a fiery match in Lavaridge.[break][break]

A low, throaty chuckle escapes him. "Don't worry, I came prepared."[break][break]

When prompted to release his flying-type, a flash of red precedes a flash of brilliant silver as his Corviknight emerges from its ball. The metallic avian quarks in greeting to its master, the stone embedded in a band around its leg matching the pin in Gavin's jacket. From the shine of its polished feathers to the way it watches its master intently, it's clearly well-treated.[break][break]

Rain comes down in sheets, soaking him through, but Gavin is unperturbed.[break][break]

"Not at all!" he calls back over the din. "Bring it on!"[break][break]

He mounts up, Corviknight's wings flaring as it prepares to take to the skies.

“Oh, before I forget—here,” he continued, pulling out a blindfold. “It’s not for you—it’s for your Corviknight. At the same time, my own companion would be blindfolded as well, so it’s more of a challenge flying around with just you to guide your companion through the thunderstorm,” Alexei explained.[break][break]

“It’s all about trust up here in these crazy weather conditions!” he added, watching as his own companion flew down to meet him—his Salamence, Gabriel. Turning his attention to the draconid, he tilted his head slightly behind him, as if gesturing to the Corviknight.[break][break]

“Looks like a challenge, don’t you think? Well, let’s see how well their bond is,” he spoke softly to the dual-type, who accepted the blindfold without complaint.[break][break]

Making sure to zip up his jacket as the rain picked up, he then climbed atop the Salamence before turning around to face the challenger.[break][break]

“See you on the other side of the storm!” he called out, flying head-first into the pouring rain. Not too soon after he’d vanished into the torrential downpour, another surprise began to rain down alongside the cold rain—a continuous avalanche of Rock Slide projectiles![break][break]

Who said this was going to be an easy challenge?

Gavin blinks at Alexei when he is handed a blindfold. Discomfort that squirms deep in his gut is dispelled when it's revealed to be for his mount, and not the trainer himself — outwardly, there is no change in his placid expression. He nods.[break][break]

"Still, Corviknight."[break][break]

He places a hand on the cool metal of the bird's shoulder before reaching up to tie the blindfold around its eyes. The avian reacts only by fluffing its feathers with the sound of scraping metal, its talons leaving deep ruts in the mud as it shifts its weight.[break][break]

Cold rain slides off steel feathers, making Gavin's grip upon his mount slippery and precarious. He clenches tight and throws his arms around the bird's neck for security as it shrieks and takes to the skies. Wind and rain roar in his ears and visibility is already proving to be a problem, but Gavin knows that this is a league-sanctioned battle. They are not truly in danger. He is unafraid as the storm rages around them, and even as rocks begin to cascade from the heavens.[break][break]

With his Corviknight unable to rely on instinct to dodge, Gavin orders: "Iron Defense, then steel your wings! I'll guide you as best as I can!"[break][break]

Corviknight shimmers as the IRON DEFENSE takes effect and its STEEL WINGS brace for impact. Gavin does his best to assist the bird in dodging whatever projectiles it could, hoping that its defenses would lessen the severity of any contact.

He would always wonder what if he was doing was illegal, this unusual take on a ‘non-traditional’ challenge.[break][break]

Well, can you blame me if I was inspired by that fake Ho-oh? All these obstacles? And of course, Gabe knowing the dangers of flying through this? He thought as he closed his eyes and flew ahead through the torrential rain.[break][break]

The rumbling of thunder sounded somewhere in the distance, and it wasn’t until he remembered that there were surprise obstacles did he remember to open his eyes.[break][break]

“Shit, I almost forgot,” he chuckled, before seeing the seemingly-endless cascade of rocks falling from multiple directions. He knew that his Aerodactyl was among those who were working overtime to provide the additional obstacles through the torrential ‘downpour’ caused by the Rain Dance, along with some surprise ‘Thunderbolt’ shaking through the area to really simulate the effect of a powerful downpour.[break][break]

“Up, and veer left!” he said, guiding the Salamence through the downpour as several large rocks seemingly appeared from out of nowhere, the skies above brewing a much more powerful vortex of rain. He knew that they both had to meet at the other side of the weather.[break][break]

Who knew what was going to happen?[break][break]

A fist-sized obstacle very nearly pummeled him in the face, and he let out a yowl—looks like some of the younger Pokémon were out as well, adding their own imperfect Rock Slide cavalcades to the mix![break][break]

Good, good, I actually need multiple-sized obstacles! He thought to himself, taking mental notes as another flash of lightning illuminated the dark area ahead.[break][break]

Was the storm much larger than he thought? He didn’t know!

Thunder cracks and rumbles in his ears, drowning out the roar of the rain and the furious beating of wings.[break][break]

Droplets of water coat his glasses and blur his vision, and he curses himself for not remembering to take them off before the flight. Balancing them on the bridge of his nose to peer over the top of rain-smudged glass, he shouts over the din: "Dive, Corviknight! Bank to the right!"[break][break]

His stomach jumps to his throat as the metallic bird folds its wings and drops like a stone from the sky. Adrenaline burns through him like fire, and a wild grin spreads across his lips. It reminds him of his youth, of tempting danger simply because he could. He is more cautious now, perhaps overly-so, and there's something freeing about this flight through the storm. Corviknight's wings flare out to catch the wind, banking sharply to the right just as the boulder Gavin had spotted plummets past.[break][break]

Unbeknownst to him, the evasive maneuver has further separated them from the gym leader — he can no longer hear the Salamence, nor Alexei's yelp of alarm.[break][break]

"Take us back up!" Gavin orders, spotting an opening in the rock slide during a bright flash of lightning. "Quickly, now!"

The torrential rain was pouring so hard, so fast, he knew that he had to get to the other side before the second part of the challenge began.[break][break]

Quickly doing some mental math in his head, he wondered if he still had a frame advantage in this situation, considering that the arena’s space was on the large side and he couldn’t see where the other had gotten too.[break][break]

A sudden blast of rocks announced the end of his wandering thoughts, and flattening himself as best as he could on the Salamence’s back, he then urged the draconid forward, its tail swishing to bat away and send other pieces of Rock Slide debris hurtling in another direction.

Hopefully it wasn’t headed towards where Patrick was, wherever he was in the storm. Another peal of lightning lit up the space, and he saw a route through the cavalcade of rocks and weather, wind blowing him nearly off-course—[break][break]

“Go, Gabriel! We’re almost there!” he said quietly, flattening himself as the wind itself very nearly threatened to unseat him from the back of the Salamence. Giving a grunt and a nod, the draconid flew as best as it could, while getting pummeled by several other mid-size obstacles.[break][break]

While it wasn’t enough to cripple the draconid, it was most certainly enough to fatigue the Salamence—and he knew that he would have to do an aerial switch because he could hear Gabriel’s breathing coming in quick, sharp gasps.[break][break]

“Hang on, we’re almost out—“ he urged, squinting through the downpour before the Salamence spotted an opening, barrel-rolling and barely avoiding one of the largest obstacles that came rocketing its way.[break][break]

After that, they had made it to the other side of the ‘storm’.[break][break]

But where was Patrick?

Corviknight beats its powerful wings against the force of the artificial storm, lifting Pokemon and rider back into the skies at Gavin's behest.[break][break]

Wind roars in Gavin's ears, drowns out all sound but the rumble-crack of thunder. A bolt of lightning strikes down ahead, and the scientist instinctively leans back and away from the threat that would have certainly been unavoidable if it had actually been aimed at them.[break][break]

Another sound wins out over the din — Corviknight's cry as a sizable rock clips its wing with the sound of pelting metal. They drop several feet as the bird instinctively pulls its wing against its side, sending them into a panicked spin.[break][break]

"It's going to hurt a lot more if you slam into the ground!" Gavin snarls. "Open your wings, damn it, fly!"[break][break]

Though the harshness of his words can be attributed to stress, they are effective enough: his mount catches a draft as it extends its wing and levels out, its wingbeats growing smoother as the pain no doubt fades to something more manageable.[break][break]

When they get clear of the storm, Gavin spots Alexei and lets out a sharp whistle, to be heard over the pouring rain.

Alexei was waiting on the other side of the weather disturbance—the moment he sighted Patrick and the Corviknight fly through the last of the debris and made it out, the Rain Dance slowly began petering out.[break][break]

The Rock Slide obstacles came to a halt, too—and now that they were both sufficiently drenched, it was time for the second part of the challenge.[break][break]

“Weather give you some problems there?” he inquired. “Give me like three minutes, have to get the second part of our challenge going, so to speak.”[break][break]

He then turned around and spoke into the headset piece for a few moments and the torrential rain finally dried out—only this time to be replaced by a sudden blast of cold air. He then looked up and saw that there were chunks of ice falling—even Gabriel began to squirm.[break][break]

“Alright, the second part should be easy. Aerial tag. In order to win—you have to catch me,” he explained, before urging the Salamence to fly closer to where the Corviknight was hovering. With a very gently poke to the top side of its beak, he then said,[break][break]

“Tag, you’re it. Catch us if you can in this snowstorm!”[break][break]

With that, the Salamence pulled away and shot off into the Hail storm.

Thunder cracks as if to punctuate Alexei's question, to mock the scientist whose rain-spattered glasses hide the force of his glare.[break][break]

"We made it out just fine!"[break][break]

Neither truth nor a complete lie; they are airborne, though several of Corviknight's metal feathers are bent out of shape. He would need to bring his avian companion to the Pokemon Center if they succeeded in their challenge, a reward for a job well done. If they failed...[break][break]

No. They would not fail.[break][break]

The storm subsides, but the reprieve from the cold rain is short. Colder still is the bitter gale that buffets them and settles into Gavin's rain-damp clothes, bites through skin and down to bone. Hail pelts bird and rider, the latter seeming far more affected as he ducks his head to protect his face. A sharp gaze is leveled upon the gym leader as he swoops in close.[break][break]

A game of tag. Really?[break][break]

He's given little time to process before Alexei and the dragon he rode upon are soaring into the hailstorm.[break][break]

"After them!" Gavin growls.[break][break]

Luckily, Corviknight's dual-typing meant it was not as ill-equipped at weathering a hailstorm as most fliers, and certainly not as disadvantaged as a dragon. However, Gavin understood that the advantage was minimal at best — the gym leader had done this before.

Alexei wondered if he could do the thing he did the previous time someone had gotten this far. Of course, he was referencing the time Stormy had come by for her own non-traditional challenge and he’d done something as insane as an aerial maneuver…[break][break]

He wondered what the other man would think of this.[break][break]

For now, though, he knows that his Salamence can continue flying through the falling Hail. He just wonders if and when the other would catch up to find him. He heard a grumbling noise coming from the Pokémon underneath him, and he sighed.[break][break]

“Yes, Gabe, I know—can you hold out another round or two? I just need to have them send up Ravana in a bit,” he said quietly as he pressed the button on his head set and sent word for them to deploy the Charizard.[break][break]

He didn’t know where Patrick was—or if the other was flying through the snow storm actively searching for him. All he knew was that he had to move—and move quickly, but quietly.[break][break]

“Shh,” he said to the Salamence a few moments later as they flew upwards and deeper into the storm.
