There's a certain irony to the gloomy path that offsets Verdanturf's bright, beautiful landscapes: it's an irony that Gavin can appreciate.[break][break]

He does not, however, appreciate the sensation of being watched. Scanning the forest that flanked the path on either side, he spots only the occasional flicker of movement as Pokemon move through what he assumes is their natural habitat.[break][break]

His hand rests on his Corviknight's ball, just in case.[break][break]

It takes longer than he'd expected to reach the gym, but eventually the path opens up into a stony arena. He comes to a stop, glancing around with a critical stare and silently wondering how one was meant to get in contact with the gym leader if they weren't around.

Thankfully for "Mister Cavalli", he wouldn't have to wait long at all for someone to come. As he was traveling down the path, the network of watchers would have a chain alerting Freke to the presence of the challenger. In turn, the Alakazam would get Thomas' attention to the approaching challenger. Once they had reported that Gavin was at the stony arena, Thomas would have Freke teleport him inside of the arena. To the uninitiated, it would seem like convenient timing.

"Welcome, Mister Cavalli, to the Verdanturf Gym!", the Kalosian greeted the blonde. "Now, on your application, you opted for a Double Battle. Is this correct?", the brown-haired Gym Leader would inquire, making sure that the man either didn't change his mind, or make a mistake in filling out the application.

"Very good. If you'd step into the blue square of the arena inside, I'll grab my two combatants, and we can begin.", Thomas told the man, stepping towards a box with a terminal attached to it. From there, Thomas would call for two Pokemon, his Malamar, and his Umbreon. The two Pokeballs would be summoned inside of the box, and after a beep, Thomas would open up the box, retrieving the two.

With that out of the way, Thomas walked to the red square, sending out his Malamar and Umbreon. "You may have the first move.", Thomas told the challenger with a grin.

Stepping up to the blue square, Gavin feels a mild thrill of excitement in anticipation of the unknown. He's never found battling fun, as it's normally something he does to survive, but gym battles provide a safe means of experimentation.[break][break]

He nods as he is afforded the first move.[break][break]

His cues for his Pokemon are nonverbal, signals rather than voiced commands. In response to one such signal, Steelix slams its tail against the earth and summons a SANDSTORM over the battlefield. Corviknight remains in place, its silver feathers shimmering as it prepares an IRON DEFENSE.

As the sandstorm kicked up, Thomas instinctively shielded his eye with his arm. Under the cover of the sandstorm, Thomas smirked, admiring the fact that his opponent set up a weather condition that favored him, Steel being spared of the chafing effects of the sands, while his two combatants would be ebbed away by the sands. Meanwhile, his Corviknight reinforced its armor with Iron Defense, another good play. The fact that they did this without verbal commands was also impressive.

"This should be good.", Thomas muttered with a grin.

"Penumbra, Taunt. Essex, Superpower.", Thomas ordered.

The Umbreon attempted to greet the Corviknight with a taunting pose. Meanwhile, the Malamar charged towards the Steelix, one of his tentacles reeled back before attempting to smack into the metal serpent with such force that would drain most Pokemon. However, if he were to hit the Steelix, he'd find himself empowered by the strike, thanks to his Contrarian nature.

Because neither of his Pokemon were acclimated towards arid environments, the whipping sands would grate against their skin, beginning to ebb away at them slowly.

As the SANDSTORM continues to rage, Gavin calmly watches the battle unfold.[break][break]

Taunted by the smaller dark-type, Corviknight abandons its command to shore up its defenses any further. Unfortunate. They'd need to make do with what little they'd managed thus far.[break][break]

Gavin's sharp whistle cuts through the sounds of battle, and his Corviknight turns to look at him. In response to its trainers signal, it orients itself before diving toward Umbreon with a BODY PRESS — a move that was bolstered by strong defenses.[break][break]

Steelix fares worse than its avian companion. Struck by the superpowered attack from the squid, it lashes out in turn. Its tail quakes the earth and summons a ROCK SLIDE over the battlefield, targeting both opponents. The SHEER FORCE with which the metal titan carried out the attack would prevent its foes from flinching in return for raw damage.

As the tentacle smashed into the body of the Steelix, the Malamar would begin to feel its effects. Such an attack should've been taxing to the user, making them weaker from its use. But Essex, thanks to his ability in Contrary, felt invigorated by performing such a feat, his strength increasing, and his body toughening up.

As the Corviknight came in for a Body Press, the Umbreon didn't even wait for orders. Instead, Penumbra waited, staring down the metal bird, before dashing away at the last moment with a well timed Quick Attack. Unfortunately, because of his timing, he was unable to dodge the oncoming Rock Slide from the Steelix.

Both Essex and Penumbra would feel the rocks coming down upon them, letting out grunts of pain, but enduring the attack. Despite how tough the two of them were, they could feel the power of the Rock Slide coming down on them. Strangely, the Rock Slide failed to make either flinch, something brought about by the Sheer Force of the attack.

Rather than going in for a second Superpower, Essex would instead broadcast Hypnotic waves towards the Steelix, in an attempt to put it to sleep. However it went, both Dark-types would wince upon feeling the sands grate against them, further ebbing away at them.

Corviknight shrieks in anger as the lithe Umbreon leaps clear of its attack.[break][break]

Steelix has the better luck, in spite of the toll Malamar had taken upon it. Successfully striking both targets, the metal serpent rumbles in satisfaction and lashes its tail. Unfortunately, the hypnotic stare of the squid proves too much to withstand. Steelix sways and collapses with a force that shakes the battlefield. At very least, its SANDSTORM remained in play even as it fell ASLEEP.[break][break]

At a signal from Gavin, Corviknight HONES ITS CLAWS before launching itself at the dual-type with a DRILL PECK.

Much to the surprise of the Malamar, the Hypnotic waves had managed to put the Steelix to sleep. In truth, the dark squid was anticipating the Steelix to burrow underground, or use a Rock Slide to wall off visibility, either protecting it from the Hypnosis. But nevertheless, the Malamar was more than happy to take it. It meant for a moment, they only had to focus on one opponent.

"Essex, watch out!", Thomas called out to the Malamar.

By the time the Malamar notices, all he could do is brace himself for what was coming. The Drill Peck managed to strike the squid, causing it to cry out in pain. In retaliation, the Malamar would attempt to slam down one of his tentacles onto the Corviknight with Superpower. Seeing this, Penumbra would begin to lend the Malamar a Helping Hand, attempting to aid his ally in combating the steely avian.

Whatever happened, the Malamar and Umbreon duo would continue to feel the effects of the sands grating against them. The Malamar especially was rather worn down, after having taken such a beating overtime. But neither was going to give this up. They were going to make the challenger earn his badge.

Steelix continues to slumber, its snores causing the earth beneath Gavin's feet to tremble. The trainer's focus, however, is on his Corviknight — the steel-feathered avian contends with two foes at once in the absence of its ally.[break][break]

"Defend, then strike back!"[break][break]

He signals to the bird when it looks his way, and Corviknight relies on its IRON DEFENSE to brace against the Malamar's boosted attack. Though its thick metal allows it to take the hit, a shriek of pain and anger betrays its weakening condition. Once again it targets the smaller Umbreon at Gavin's silent insistence, this time attempting to lure its foe into a false sense of security before suddenly lunging forward with a heavily boosted BODY PRESS.[break][break]

Gavin squints through the falling sand, hoping his Steelix would soon wake.[break][break]

As the tendril strikes at the Corviknight's body, the Malamar once again feels an empowering rush flowing through him. Contrary to the norm, the uses of Superpower continue to make him stronger, rather than weaker. Furthermore, the support of Penumbra helps things along.

But rather than continue to be locked into combat with the Corviknight, the avian instead rushes for the Umbreon, smashing into the creature with a Body Press. This time, the Dark-type is caught off guard, and slammed by the attack. "Penumbra!", Thomas calls out. Despite this, the Umbreon hangs on, but just barely. "Essex, Topsy Turvy!", Thomas calls out.

The Malamar attempts to utilize its power to invert the fortified defenses, attack, and accuracy. If successful, the two Iron Defenses would immediately be turned against the Corviknight especially.

"Foul Play!", Thomas called out to the Umbreon.

Penumbra would immediately attempt to turn the Corviknight's strength against it, in a last moment of defiance. The Umbreon would leap up, and attempt to execute a trained strike against the steely avian. Despite its weakened offenses, if the Topsy Turvy was successful, the weakened defenses resulting from it would more than make up for it.

Whether it was successful or not, Penumbra would fall from the sands buffeting his body. And while Essex still stood, both the Malamar and his trainer saw the Steelix begin to rouse from its brief slumber.
