[attr="class","spiral"]Many ace trainers practice personal fitness alongside their Pokemon. In the wild, a trainer's health is just as essential as their Pokemon's. Fernando is no exception although his routine strays from the traditional mindset. Most exercise revolves around sculpting or cultivating strength, which while important do little to improve a trainer's actual performance.

For Fernando, there are only two important skills: the ability to control where a Pokeball lands and to evade attacks. Between Slateport and Littleroot, Fernando's had his fair share of close calls. Pokemon won't always be there to protect him so honing his own fundamentals is imperative to success. That's why cardio and basic pitching make up the most consistent part of his workout.

The League Gym is empty on the evenings, which make it the perfect place for his weekly pacer test. An audible buzzer sounds off every few seconds while Fernando tries to sprint to the opposite end of the room. Every time it goes off, he pivots, starting for the other end regardless of how far he's made it. Over time the interval shortens, demanding him to keep up while making the task scale with difficulty.

His Sceptile and Weavile flank him on either side. Not every Pokemon knows PROTECT or TELEPORT, meaning that they'll have to improve their own performance to make up for their moveset.

Alexei didn’t know, but for some reason…[break][break]

There was something about one of the Council memebrs he couldn’t quite put his finger on.[break][break]

He only heard of them by name mostly (at least one of them he was sort of familiar with, because of the premise of one miss Olivia Abbiati finding out about his worst-kept ‘secret’ in the form of the Phione) or reputation, but well…[break][break]

Maybe it was time to change his perception of things. Maybe somewhat definitely, he wasn’t sure. Either way…[break][break]

He decided to go down to Lilycove one evening. Slightly disappointed after dropping by Isra’s place to find out that she was at work, he then sighed before remembering that unlike the rest of the world, she kept an opposite schedule. But that wasn’t the point of everything.[break][break]

He was nearing the League-issued gym in the area and happened to take a peer inside. Who was out here so late? Squinting through the glass, he decided to take a closer look.

He can barely manage a grunt before he pivots on his heels. The squeak of a rubber sole grinding into the vinyl court echoes and Fernando's labored breathing becomes the accompanying background noise. It's layered with frantic stomping of three unsynchronized set of legs and the pattern continues. Each time the buzzer sounds they repeat the process and the Gym flows into a pained crescendo.

Eventually, it's impossible to keep up. Fernando gives in, hunched over with his hands on his knees, while his Pokemon continue. His Weavile seems the most adept with Sceptile starting to show some fatigue. Wiping away his sweat leaves his hand covered in droplets. His towel is back on a bench, out of reach, and disregarded until his Pokemon end up quitting too.

Bite it down, bite the bullet, just suck it up and go for it! He thought as he realized who was training inside. Hoping not to run into a meltdown, he then summoned his Lucario, Vincent, to join him.[break][break]

“Stay with me?” he asked the jackal Pokémon quietly, and received a curt little nod as they made their way to a side entrance. He was still internally screaming and trying not to freak out and make a run for it, though.[break][break]

While he had heard mostly of the man inside by reputation, the fact that not only was he a Councilman but also a Gym Leader drew his interest. Sticking his hand in many things? Maybe… he continued to dwell quietly before shoving the door open.[break][break]

“You—do you mind if I join you?” he inquired, the Lucario primed and ready beside him.

[attr="class","spiral"]"The Gym is open to all League employees and personnel," is his answer, busy toweling off the sweat from his head, unaware of who exactly asked. It isn't until his forehead is dry that he removes the cloth, peering at Alexei past his damp bangs.

"Oh, it's you. Ivanov, right?"

He tosses his towel back onto the bench and reaches for a water bottle. Both of his Pokemon are more than ready, evident by the two empty, crumpled bottles beside his. His Weavile snickers while the Sceptile simply observes. Fernando pays them no mind, using the small break to regather himself as well as his energy.

"I'm just doing some cardio if you want to use the court. If not, then sure. I'm just finishing up some pacer tests."

His (personal) first impression of Fernando Silph would be someone who has everything in the palm of their hands, exuding—no, oozing—that charisma and confidence. To be fair, he’s not wrong there…on the most part. The man he sees behind the door is something else. It’s like he can’t put a finger on it, but…[break][break]

“Yes, that’s right,” he nodded, before the Lucario stepped forward and began stretching its arms overhead. “Hm? Vince, what is it?” he asked the other Pokémon, wondering if he could get a straight answer. Normally impossible to understand Pokémon most of the time, the Lucario tried to make a conscious effort to…[break][break]

“Oh?” he inquired, before the dual-type looked over at the other two Pokémon.[break][break]

“Not sure if I understood this right but my Lucario wants to train with your Pokémon, if you don’t mind,” he said afterward as he shimmied his way out of his jacket before claiming one side of the gym for himself.[break][break]

While his own form of exercising would normally consist of brisk walking (as advised by the doctors he’d met with previously due to his own medical condition) today he was going to try something different.[break][break]

Stretching his arms up overhead, he then crouched down before warming up as he stretched his legs and arms out against the wall. He didn’t care if he was going to look strange when he did the headstand in a bit…

It's Fernando's own Pokemon that display any semblance of emotion and personality. His Weavile continues to snicker, waving at the Lucario, before sneering in a haughty challenge. His Sceptile remains observant, grimacing at the Weavile's more extroverted behavior, serving as the overshadowed, uninvolved character in Fernando's roster.

"The point of the pacer is to practice endurance and then speed. The decreasing interval stimulates the need to adjust to situations. Consider the length of your battle and reserve enough stamina to go as long as you can."

He spares Alexei a glance before staring at the other side of the gym. As soon as the buzzer goes off all three of them make a brisk jog toward the other end. It starts slow at first hence they're lack of urgency.

The Lucario looks at the Weavile coolly, before remembering that Alexei had one of his own too. While Luna wasn’t as… openly haughty as this one, the dual-type took its place alongside mentioned Weavile and the Sceptile. There was a glint in its eyes, before it got into position, leaning forward slightly and ready to go forward at the starting whistle.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Alexei had taken up a position on the sidelines and was seated down attempting to reach his toes with his outstretched arms.[break][break]

“Don’t overdo it, Vince,” he called out to the Lucario as they started slow. A pacing test should be quick enough to pick up on and get the hang of, right?[break][break]

Mostly, his own Pokémon moved at their own pace as Alexei didn’t like to enforce too much on them unless it was absolutely necessary. He continued to keep an eye on the Lucario, keeping stride with the other two Pokémon so far.

[attr="class","spiral"]The Pacer test lives up to its name. After the third exchange the interval they have between beeps decreases exponentially. Having already completed an earlier session, Fernando's too worn out to last much longer. He ends up making it through eight rounds before the constant sprinting brings him to the point of exhaustion. His Pokemon however prove much more resilient.

Ideally, the exercise only caters to humans at first. After they drop out the pacing should reflect the physical prowess of their Pokemon companions. Sceptile, the largest between the three of them, lasts much longer but is the first Pokemon to succumb. The much smaller Weavile, seems right at home scampering about, adept at scavenging in harsh weather.

Done with his weekly routine, Fernando returns his Pokemon. He considers leaving without a word but hesitates when he starts to pack his towel and spare clothes. "Enjoy the rest of your work out, Ivanov." The sincerity behind those words are as empty as the Gym he leaves behind, leaving Alexei all by himself.

Unlike the other two Pokémon, the Lucario was getting pretty much warmed up—keeping pace with the Weavile and the Sceptile as the intervals increased and the distance needed to scale was getting shorter and shorter.[break][break]

The Lucario himself had gotten lost in the beat of his footsteps echoing across the wooden floor, keeping stride with the rest of its fellow Pokémon companions—he hadn’t noticed that the test had long ended already and the two Pokémon he was drilling with had left.[break][break]

Walking over to where his human companion was, the Lucario sat down beside a man who was halfway up doing a handstand supported by the wall he was leaning against.[break][break]

“What? You know I can’t hold the position for long,” he remarked as he then hoisted his feet up with some difficulty and finally got a view of the gym itself—while upside down, he blinked a few times.[break][break]

“Huh, where’d he go,” he said quietly, before mentally shrugging and continuing with the strange set of exercises he had in mind.[break][break]

“Vince, feel free to continue working out—I’ll be here for a bit, okay?”[break][break]

Such a strange man, indeed.
