By the time Lance comes to join her at the edge of the boat she's recovered enough to not look like death warmed over.[break][break]

She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear as he approaches, straightening from her leaning position to grip the edge of the boat. [break][break]

"Yeah."[break][break]

A lie.[break][break]

"Is everyone else alright?"[break][break]

She pulls away from the boat then, hands returning to her side. But the throb in her hand and the blood smear she leaves behind reminds her of the deep cut in her palm. It's still bleeding, she had just blocked out the pain temporarily.[break][break]

The second cut to her neck is shallow, but it's leaked a drop or two of blood onto the collar of her dress.

she lies. his eyes narrow at the sight of her injuries and he reaches out for her hand, gentle in his touch, but forceful enough to tilt it to reveal the wound. it's deep and he almost winces from it, but he soon lets go. [break][break]

"they're fine," he says before disappearing into the interior of the yacht. he comes back out a few moments later with a napkin. he folds it up and reaches out for her hand again, keen on placing it over the wound to apply pressure. [break][break]

Stormy gasps in pain as he grabs hold of her hand. No matter how gentle he is, the jolt is shocking and the wound is deep and agitated. The moment he lets go she tucks it closer to her again protectively, curling her fingers over it to hide it, to mask the pain.[break][break]

He's short with her and she knows why and it breaks her heart. So when he leaves she stifles a sob.[break][break]

It comes as a relief when he returns with a napkin, tugging her hand back to him and pressing the cloth into her wound. She bites back a whimper, her arm tensing and instinctively attempting to jerk away from the pain.[break][break]

And with it comes her apology.[break][break]

"I'm so sorry, Lance. I'm so sorry. I didn't want to, I said I wouldn't - I promised. I'm not okay, I'm not - I broke my promise, I fucked up. I fucked up."

he says it bluntly. when the napkin is placed and secure, he moves her hand back towards her. he holds his gaze and reaches a hand to place on her shoulder, willing for her to snap out of her affliction of guilt and regret. [break][break]

She flinches at his words, unsure whether they're meant to comfort or drive home the guilt she's already feeling. [break][break]

He pushes her hand back to her when the napkin is secure. It soaks with blood but stops the bleeding. His bluntness has calmed her tears if only because she doesn't want him to see her cry. She's stronger than this. [break][break]

And it's her desperation that drives her to reach for him, to bury herself in his chest.[break][break]

he's caught off guard when she reaches for him, and more so by the words that follow. for moments, he stands there stunned, unsure of how to react. but eventually, his arms fall around her to pull her closer.[break][break]

the rush of emotions he feels is familiar and it scares him. it fills him with a sense of dread that he thought he would never quite experience again. he never wanted to.[break][break]

he holds her for as long as she needs him to. it might not be the answer she's looking for, but it'll be the only one she gets.

And in his arms, even if it takes him a moment to reciprocate, she feels at peace. The fact that he doesn't move away is her invitation to hold tighter, to find comfort in his presence.[break][break]

They don't say anything further and she doesn't let go for what feels like too long - but it doesn't feel long enough. [break][break]

When she does pull away she finds herself shying from his gaze. She still trembles from the trauma from the situation, but their yacht has made it back to shore in a hurry to detain the pirates and look everyone over for injuries. [break][break]

Officials move to get at the pirates behind Wadjet, and the dragon is so riled up that she acts defensive. [break][break]

"Easy, Wadjet. Let them pass, it's okay. They know what they're doing."[break][break]

Stormy's voice is surprisingly strong given the wobble she had had earlier. Someone notices her injured hand and motions for her to follow them for medical treatment.

when they finally dock and the officials shuffle on board, lance stays to help them with the pirates. and when he's done and about ready to find stormy, a more senior official stops him to question him about the incident, but he shrugs them away.[break][break]

"i'll come in later to debrief." [break][break]

right now, his concern lies with stormy, and he soon finds her being treated by a medic at the back of one of the ambulances. he approaches with an air of worry; more concerned about her mental wellbeing than physical.[break][break]

Stormy is asked questions but she's honestly too rattled to properly answer, or unwilling to relay the specifics of what had happened. Her answers are vague and they allow her to sit quietly in the back of the ambulance with her hand wrapped in bandages. She hasn't been administered any painkiller but frankly, she doesn't want it. The pain makes it real.[break][break]

When Lance arrives, the on-scene paramedic is smoothing a bandage against her neck. Stormy hisses in pain but only because the person has bumped her injured hand. When she reopens her eyes, Lance is hovering nearby and asking her a question.[break][break]

"Twenty stitches, but I'll survive. I'll have to work on my left-handed writing, but it is what it is."

"wish i could teach you but," he wiggles his dominant right hand, chuckling. he gives the paramedic a friendly pat on the shoulder before asking if he could have a moment with stormy. the paramedic nods and leaves them to it. [break][break]

lance sits down next to her, sighing as he brings a hand up to rub his temples. this was a night for them to enjoy. instead, it has left him exhausted. [break][break]

"i don't blame you for doing what you did." he turns to look at her. "there was no way out of it."

Stormy's returning laugh is breathless as she watches him wiggle his right hand. Her own is taped up tight, immobile except for the slightest twitch of her fingertips.[break][break]

She glances up as the paramedic leaves and Lance sits next to her. Instinctively, she finds herself leaning her temple against his arm, sighing.[break][break]

"Maybe."[break][break]

Deep down, she wants to believe that. Believe that there was no way out of it, that what she did was necessary or the only option. But she doesn't, only because she's sure that someone else in her position, without the insane power of fire conjugation, could have escaped, too.[break][break]

"Do you regret coming here? To Hoenn? Where you never seem to get a break from danger or duty."

if their roles were reversed, he would be dead, no doubt about it. he only escaped with his life the last time because of distractions. because of her. it pains him a little that he couldn't do the same for her tonight. she had to fight for her life alone. [break][break]

her question is loaded, but she doesn't know it. he is forced to sit there as certain memories come rushing back, unavoidable, and all he can do is survive the wave. "is this region cursed, or is it just me?" he chuckles, but decides to give her a real answer. [break][break]

"i don't regret it, no. i always knew it would be dangerous and that most of my time would be dedicated to helping the rangers here. but honestly, i don't mind the danger. it keeps me alive in a way."
