True to the gym’s fashion, Valerio arrived at the reservation facility by the shiny drampa. It flapped its cotton wings like that of a wingull’s before landing on the concourse. The fact that Genesis only shed its mane from blue to gold recently made it a solid distinction from the identity manufactured for him from his early years in the organization and it was safe to bring him along. He entered a nearby structure that looked like the reception. Valerio, who trimmed his beared and bunned his hair, winked at the counter guy as he made his request.

“Jonathan Aquil. Thirty-eight years old. I’m here for the gym battle with Alexei Ivanov Alexei Ivanov.”

This time, it was Alexei himself who was looking over a pile of papers. The receptionist had called out sick for the day, and after advising him to get well soon and rest up, he decided to take charge of looking over the papers that were left behind.[break][break]

The moment he heard the voice that mentioned his name, he looked up and blinked for a few moments—he didn’t want to be caught staring at the man who had shown up.[break][break]

Complete profile much? He thought to himself as he skated over the potentially awkward silence with ease.[break][break]

“Oh, mister Aquil? We’ve been expecting you,” he said with a hint of a grin threatening to show itself as he stood up and made his way over to the side door.[break][break]

“I trust you’re not afraid of heights?” he added a few moments later as he headed out to the back of the Sanctuary proper, which hosted the outdoor arena where he preferred to have his gym battles.[break][break]

Most of the time he preferred the tricky flying over straight-up battling, anyway.[break][break]

“I surely hope not,” he continued as he fished out a whistle and blew a single note before looking up at the sky and watching as a flock of shadows came circling around the arena before alighting on the various perches that were scattered around the area.[break][break]

“Do you trust your companion?” he inquired a few moments later as he pulled out a blindfold. “If you want, you can put this over your Drampa’s eyes, as that’s one of the parts of this twofold challenge.”

“I practically own the skies,” Valerio channeled his Jonathan persona. Confident, but not very bragging; playful, but reasonable. He eyes for is drampa to follow and they were brought to a larger court of avian sanctuary where the place was wide enough for pokémons to fly freely. It was good he did not ask the challenge to be taken in the middle of the day—he wanted to be spares from being sun tanned.

”What if I don’t?” Though he made it sound obvious that he was joking, Jonathan hissed accepting the blindfold and began doing his dragon-type. The drampa was indifferent to what his trainer was doing. “But daring. I’m liking it. So what should I do next?”

“The first half of this entire thing—is trust. Do you trust your Pokémon’s instincts enough to fly through any kind of foul weather?” he continued as he produced another blindfold before pulling out a whistle from inside his shirt.[break][break]

At the same time, he turned around and blew a single note, watching as the shadows of multiple Flying-types as well as other Pokémon that could fly began to congregate from all over. This time, it wasn’t his Salamence who would be taking this challenge, rather it would be his Hydreigon.[break][break]

He felt he’d been neglecting the other Pokémon he had, so… there it was.[break][break]

At the same time, a howling wind blew through the area, bringing with it powerful sand swirling from multiple directions.[break][break]

“Normally I would go with torrential rain, but why not shake shit up a little,” he chuckled before blindfolding his Hydreigon as well and alighting on the dual-type.[break][break]

“First part’s simple. Meet me on the other side of the sand storm! Oh, and watch out for the… obstacles.”[break][break]

With a grin, he snapped down his flying goggles and flew right into the heart of the Sandstorm, blinking a few times as he got used to the grit. The moment he entered the sandstorm, out came the various obstacles falling from multiple directions—the Rock Slide boulders inspired from an event he’d been through previously.[break][break]

“Trust your ears!” he hissed to the Hydreigon, who turned its blind head before swatting away an incoming rock with one of its arms.

alexei lectured him and genesis about trust. if only his jonathan persona did not look younger than what he actually was, he’d take his words as an insult. genesis and valerio came a long way, but of course it was not something the gym leader would now. it was not something he should know. “don’t worry, we got this.”[break][break]

being one of the only two pokémons that survived the purge of his dragon herd, genesis is very sensitive to valerio’s words and actions. he knew what every nudge meant, every hiss, every pull of his mane. when alexei ascended, so was genesis.[break][break]

the blindfold part was easy. he just needed to be genesis’s eyes for a few moments. what made it hard was the rocks sliding their way in the middle of the sandstorm. dusts began to form all over his face, then his clothes, then the golden drampa’s mane. rocks, the obstacles alexei was talking about, flew in unrecognizable directions which made it hard for valerio to check their every direction. “can we attack the rocks?” he shouted in a haste to the speeding flying-type trainer, his mouth catching some of the sand before spitting it out to the ground.[break][break]

Hearing the question somewhere behind, and to his right Alexei pondered it for a few moments.[break][break]

“That would be cheating, you know!” he called back as he banked to the left hard before several boulders had almost smashed into where he had hovered unwisely for a few seconds. “If you do that, it wouldn’t meet the specifications of the challenge!”[break][break]

As an afterthought, he chuckled softly to himself before banking skywards—the Hydreigon was quick to adapt to the challenge. He supposed, since for most of its early life the dual-type had been blind—only to suddenly gain the ‘gift’ of sight afterward? How nuts was that?[break][break]

The deeper he flew into the sandstorm, the more frequent the obstacles became—he’d come very close to almost getting smacked upside the head with a boulder, himself.[break][break]

Yikes, they definitely do not mess around! he thought as he steered the Hydreigon towards a calmer section of the storm, wondering what had happened to the other man and their flying mount.

the gym leader's words were taken by the violent gusts of sandstorm, drowning in the noise of crashing boulders that surrounded the pair of challengers.[break][break]

valerio liked to believe he had trainings far worse than this. the job of a dragon slayer relied on the use of all things perceived by sensation. for the rocket, this is a mere child's game.[break][break]

he closed his eyes, simulating the experience of his drampa beneath the covers. he needed to be "one" with genesis. he knew holding back can only awaken his dragon's true senses.[break][break]

claws dig deep into the golden dragon's mane, genesis understood this as his way of seeing that his trainer is with him. now, valerio can focus from squinting his eyes from sand and just do what it takes to earn the fortree badge. he listened and listened and listened until his perception led him to the correct path.[break][break]

“now!” valerio pulled the dragon's hair and the drampa began speeding through the vortex of sand and rocks. the dragon was not fortunate from withstanding the hit of the rocks, but its strength alone managed to get through the pain as adrenaline surged through its body.[break][break]

and over time, valerio and genesis seemed like they were dodging more boulders for every minute that passed. until valerio heard of the void that lingered: like a tunnel where colliding noises reverberated intensely. they had to move forward and they need to move fast.[break][break]

“wait for it...” he pulled his mane again, halting genesis from moving, reassuring the sound of their escape before he gave the green light. “go”[break][break]

He wondered where the other man was amindst the swirling grit. It was… just a mess, honestly.[break][break]

Sometimes his Pokémon companions did their job too well and went wild. Now was one of these times.[break][break]

The thicker the sandstorm got, the more obstacles came raining down and around them—just how many Pokémon did he have that had Rock Slide on them anyway? Either way, he continued to barrel-roll through the howling weather, mentally crossing his fingers and hoping that nothing too bad was going to come crashing down on them and knock them out of the sky.[break][break]

Seeing that the sand was thinning out, he then flattened himself as best as he could on his Salamence and made gangway towards the edge of the weather hazard, finally emerging in a burst of sand and grit sent flying.[break][break]

Gods, he should really tell them to calm the hell down sometimes…[break][break]

Where was the other man, he wondered? The Salamence grumbled before he began shaking down the dust and grit that had stuck all over his skin.

when the boulder hit him and the drampa, the sensation was actually similar to how he first experienced flying. the only difference would be how this time, he was surrounded by earthly hazards.[break][break]

the strange feeling would take him back three decades ago: he was conscious but he cannot move any part of his body. it seemed like the world present itself as he plunged deeper and deeper and the sky expanded more and more like it was beginning to accept his body.[break][break]

but there was genesis.[break][break]

the dragon, now more mature, donning the regal golden color of his mane, nosedived to save his trainer once more.[break][break]

“ah! genesis.” his soul returned to his body at an instant, his drampa conveniently making him land atop his body so the redhead could shift easily. the drampa groaned, looking at his trainer with determined eyes.[break][break]

“okay. i get what you mean. we'll try again.” valerio pulled part of its silk white hair and steered the dragon back into position, waiting for the perfect moment before rushing past the vortex of rocks and into where he thought he saw Alexei Ivanov came to check upon on him.[break][break]

“Looking a little shaken there,” he remarked the moment Jonathan emerged from the other side of the storm.[break][break]

It was like someone had turned off a tap the moment the other man had cleared out the area—all at once, the Sandstorm came to a stop, the boulders finally stopped falling. Now that the skies were clear again, he continued to shake off the sand that had gotten in his clothes with a hiss before turning to face the other man.[break][break]

“That was just the first part, there’s a second part. Premise is simple: catch me if you can. When you do tag me, you win. Only this time, we’re not flying in desert weather, we’re doing it like this.”[break][break]

Turning away, he tapped the ear piece and said a few indistinguishable words, before storm clouds gathered above the two and the Sandstorm was replaced by Rain Dance.[break][break]

“Good luck,” he said, before urging the Salamence to fly into the storm. Now this was weather he could get behind—the pouring rain finally cleaning off the muck and sand.[break][break]

Only he’d clean forgotten that sand turned into mud when exposed to water long enough, whoops.[break][break]

At the same time he’d disappeared into the downpour, winds and rumbling began to emanate from within the new weather obstacle—Hurricane-force winds began to blow, before the sounds of rumbling thunder brewed in the immediate area.

mud began to clump on his clothes as soon as the rain started pouring, leaving valerio alone with drampa while the gym leader escaped into the roaring clouds.[break][break]

“that was totally... unexpected.” the drampa curiously leaned his head into one side, questioning if what just happened was good or bad. his trainer returned a kind gesture, petting his head while finding a more comfortable spot on his nape. “it's fine. i'll get you cleaned up after all this.”[break][break]

first things first, he needed a tactic to get through the rain. sunny day, perhaps, was not a welcomed idea even when Alexei Ivanov had not mention anything on his head. the list in his head went on as he marked his moves with consideration before finally deciding what's his best recourse.[break][break]

“we needed to heat you up or else you'll weaken throughout the search.” he flatted himself on genesis's neck and nodded into the far end. “breathe in like you're making a flamethrower, but don't let it out. keep it there. then go.”[break][break]

Now that the two had disappeared into the howling wind and rain, the rumbling thunder grew stronger—before a sudden bolt of Thunder crashed down not too far from where Valerio was headed. A strong wind threatened to blow him off-course as well a few moments later.[break][break]

Up where Alexei had disappeared to, the winds were getting stronger—he was literally flying against the wind stream that was hailing down all around them.[break][break]

He thought he saw the silhouette of his Gyarados through the pouring rain, before another loud rumbling shook the area. A second bolt of Thunder crashed down near where he was flying as well, forcing him to change direction and head deeper into the storm.[break][break]

Wow, what the fresh hell, rude! He thought with a chuckle as the rain continued to pour around them. He kept his ears peeled as best as possible, because who knew where Jonathan would be coming out of and catching him.[break][break]

“improvise. we need to know where he went.” valerio raised three fingers, signaling genesis on what to do. flames on his mouth extinguished as he prepared to belt a sound. with a clap from the redhead, genesis roared hyper voice into the raining field, relying on the vibrations to disperse the droplets of precipitation as they surged through and forth.[break][break]

Sure, try to kill me, guys, he thought with a chuckle as the distorted noise carried to where he was—before quickly moving through the wall of torrential water and narrowly sidestepping the other Hurricane-like blast of air that had been thrown his direction.[break][break]

Obviously, the weather change only had a finite size, so him flying out of it would mean he would have disqualified himself—and higher he went.[break][break]

He was flying towards the literal heart of the storm now.

valerio chuckled when he realized he and Alexei Ivanov were both thinking the same thing. the eye of the storm.[break][break]

while genesis pushed through the vortex of wind, rain, and thunder, the noise that was supposed to be coming from the drampa's mouth was now reverberating from behind him. he lifted drampa's fur, redirecting him away from the budding cyclone.[break][break]

“that was close!” he exclaimed, trying to see amid the chaos brought by the storm. where was calm was out of the question--everything was going rabid, branches falling off from trees, swaying with the violent gusts and downpour. but he could see where the hurricanes and thunder gathered, and he knew that was what he's looking for.[break][break]

he tapped the dragon to change position, his back facing the eye of the storm. “we need a boost, so fire blast as much as you can until we get towards that direction, okay?”[break][break]

genesis saved his remaining energy from responding as he hurled fire, rocketing him to where his trainer might now be facing the gym leader. “i guess all that's left is the chase, huh?”[break][break]
