His fellow rockets had been warning Valerio about not appearing in a broadcasted fight against the Sootipolis gym leader. For someone who was still a high-profile criminal after the decimation of Kanto, there will be always threats for his security that he needed to consider. But Valerio was pretty confident with his identity, Jonathan Aquil, who looked way more younger than his usual self.

There were cameras all over the arena, and Jonathan looked for the nearest one to wave and wink at the audience. He finally summoned his two buddies—Genesis the drampa and Sphinx the dracozolt—into the battle stage.

”Tell me if we’re about to start,” Jonathan told ALEXANDER STONE, his gaze fixated at the sharp features of the man who was now his opponent. He would have develop a crush on him, if not for his natural disgust for league members. “I’m so ready to take the Rune Badge!”

[attr="class","devonpost"]it's not often that challengers request for a broadcasted fight. the ones who do are usually the more experienced looking for exposure. in jonathan aquil's case—alexander doesn't know, but the crowd seems to like him as his wink is met with a loud cheer.

"i hope the crowd doesn't distract you too much, mister aquil!"

like his challenger, alexander also turns to a camera and graces their audience with a wave. despite being an outsider, the people of sootopolis seem to have taken well to their new gym leader. or at least that's what their cheers tell him.

"we are ready when you are."

the moment alexander finishes his sentence, his team bursts into action. greninja duplicates itself with DOUBLE TEAM as clones of itself appear around the battlefield. a TOXIC finds its way to dracozolt, looking to seep through its scales.

Jonathan promised the cheering would not get over his head, but before he could even break out a spiel, ALEXANDER STONE already called on his pokémons and started with the attack. He understood that the brief of the battle was particular with teamwork, and while the dracozolt was not someone who is as accustomed to his antics and strategy like the drampa, he trusted the creature to trust its trainer’s instincts.

”Sphinx, dodge it and Genesis, get some sun in here,” both pokémons watched greninja went on full doubling as the fossil dragon focused on his target. With a hair-inch distance from the gush of poison, it leaped from its position, putting a safe distance as it supported Genesis with his SUNNY DAY. The drampa’s golden body glowed even more, reflecting the bright sun that touched the battlefield.

”You know what they say about stars, Hoenn,” Jonathan excitedly yelled at the camera. “They won’t be it unless they shine bright!”

DRACOZOLT dodges TOXIC.
DRAMPA uses SUNNY DAY. Fire-type moves are strengthened, water-types move ate weakened. (1/5)

[attr="class","devonpost"]it has been a while since they've had a challenger as charismatic as jonathan aquil. the man beckons to the crowd and plays off them, as if their cheers empower him. the energy in the air is electric as the battle begins.

a SUNNY DAY shines down over them as clouds part, giving way for the bright rays of the sun. humidity slowly rises, while the effectiveness of water-moves decreases. perhaps it's why greninja doesn't attack just yet. or perhaps it's something else entirely.

pyu-pyu is suctioned on greninja's back, somewhat hidden as another DOUBLE TEAM creates more clones of greninja. TOXIC leaks out of the ground underneath dracozolt, looking to poison it once again.

they stand their ground, prompting their opponents to attack first.

”You’ve got to be kidding me,” Jonathan would have cursed if not for upholding his current persona, watching as Alexander’s team repeated their actions with much more danger. Genesis and Sphinx leaned on each other’s back as they braved the hell unleashed upon them. They still have a chance at winning.

”I guess you just have to endure the pain until we win, Sphinx,” he shouted towards the dracozolt who received the gush of poison from the pyukumuku before drampa leaped into the skies and the electric dragon bursting with DISCHARGED energy towards the plethora of greninja clones.

Genesis, hovering midair, watched as electricity surged from his partner’s body, produced a blue orb of energy (FOCUS BLAST) as well and hurled it towards the frog ninja.

DRACOZOLT is hit by TOXIC. Dracozolt is poisoned.
DRACOZOLT uses DISCHARGE on GRENINJA and PYUKUMUKU.
DRAMPA uses FOCUS BLAST on GRENINJA.
Fire-type moves are strengthened, water-types move are weakened. (2/5)

[attr="class","devonpost"]a sudden DISCHARGE surges across the battlefield, shocking most things in the vicinity, including the real greninja and the pyukumuku on its back. jolts of electricity dance across their bodies, but it does far less damage to greninja than it normally would, courtesy of its PROTEAN.

the blue orb of energy from FOCUS BLAST flies towards them, but it's met with a sudden cloud of SMOKESCREEN. it covers the battlefield, keeping them hidden, and though the orb clears parts of the SMOKESCREEN, the greninja is longer there for the orb to find. it hits the ground instead.

pyu-pyu is forced to take the turn to RECOVER from the first attack as they both use the cover of the smoke to stay hidden. that, in addition to the clones, should keep them safe as they maneuver around, perhaps even diving into the water. who knows? the real greninja could be anywhere.

”Of course you’d do that,” Jonathan uttered under his breath, desperate to call on Alexander’s pokémon to attack. Just as when smokescreen began to envelope the battlefield, its reptilian features flashed a TAUNTING smile, mocking the greninja to breakaway from his and his trainer’s strategy and berserk.

Genesis followed suit, summoning DRACO METEOR, this time, giant orange balls of energy surround the drampa before releasing into the ground. While smokescreen raised uncertainty of his attack connect, the dragon hoped the size of the impact would be enough to injure its opponents.

DRACOZOLT is poisoned. It deals low damage.
DRACOZOLT uses TAUNT on GRENINJA. Pokémon affected will not be able to use status moves.
DRAMPA uses DRACO METEOR on GRENINJA. Its SP. ATK will decrease when hit. (-2 SP. ATK)
Fire-type moves are strengthened, water-types move are weakened. (3/5)

[attr="class","devonpost"]there's a subtle shift in greninja's demeanor that goes unnoticable to most. alexander notices it instantly, understanding his pokemon well enough to know better. with no options to counter it, they'll simply have to work with it.

the DRACO METEOR that crashes into the ground is enough to make the crowd gasp. parts of the SMOKESCREEN disperses for a moment, and as everyone attempts to stare through the smoke to see if the attack had found its mark, greninja is already on the move.

running with a slight limp, greninja allows darkness to form in front of him before he sends a NIGHT SLASH forward, soaring through the air towards the dracozolt. greninja continues to lurk in the SMOKESCREEN.

another TOXIC will slither its way onto drampa as well, taking advantage of the distractions.

sphinx received the unavoidable night slash to the expense of another wave of discharge against both his enemies.[break][break]

meanwhile, the golden drampa countered the approaching with a flamethrower, its poisonous liquid sizzling and evaporating with the flame’s contact.[break][break]

[attr="class","devonpost"]the DISCHARGE is easy enough for greninja to leap over, somersaulting like a professional gymnast to avoid the crackle of electricity. for the briefest of moments, the greninja's back is exposed, revealing the lack of a pyukumuku suctioned to him.

in the SMOKESCREEN, pyu-pyu takes the full damage of the DISCHARGE before using PAIN SPLIT on the drampa, looking to bring it down low. greninja plunges back down into the smoke after.

they just have to outlast the BADLY POISONED dracozolt. the camera cuts back to alexander. a man in the crowd nudges his wife, catching her staring.

from what valerio could surmise, the gym leader’s strategy was to make greninja hold long enough until sphinx fainted from poison. he looked at the crowd, andrenaline flushing on their faces and he knew dodging would not give much of a show. this peer pressure should have magnified dracozolt’s taunting, pushing the water-type to attack once more. once it disappeared into the veil of smoke, the dracozolt took this chance to retaliate. “sphinx! remember our training!”[break][break]

drampa endured the pain split from the pyukumuku. he used his energy to materialize another focus blast, blindly hitting his opponents. smoke once again dispersed for a while, and it gave dracozolt a view to where the greninja might be hiding.[break][break]

playing on with their strategy, the fossil pokémon launched itself with bolt beak, ensured to be the first one to attack to sustain even greater damage. it endured another bite of poison as it made great strides towards the target.[break][break]

[attr="class","devonpost"]a FOCUS BLAST ripples across the battlefield; its volatility enough to cause a vacuum in the SMOKESCREEN. it reveals a multitude of greninja clones, each one dissipating from the force of the attack. it finds connection with a fake.

the BOLT BEAK, however, finds the real one. greninja is sent flying back by the attack, soaring through the air for moments before plunging into the water. for moments, all is still.

TOXIC finds its way to the drampa, and from the depths of the water, an EXTRASENSORY looks to overwhelm the dracozolt.
