Love is, indeed, a hard word for her to say. She's only spoken it a handful of times, preferring to leave it muted and muffled in gesture, in prose. She is more poetic and subtle, preferring to express her emotion in physical touch and her actions.[break][break]

And even still she's uncertain when she interacts with him. Falling in love with him has been terrifying and intense, an entirely new experience regardless of how many times she thought she had been in love and been loved before.[break][break]

His hand brushes her skin, fingers caressing her jaw. The motion is so tender it is deafening. She's not an emotional person, no tears threaten to burst from her eyes. She appears virtually poised, but she is anything but. It's comforting at the same time terrifying, to watch him trust her so wholly.[break][break]

For a long moment he is content to sit in silence, breathing in the dusty garden air and the scent of Emma's shampoo. He comes back to himself wholly and completely after a time; the trembling in his hands subsides, and his breaths become rhythmic and steady.[break][break]

It's the first time he's been comforted during a moment of weakness. Even his sister, close though they were, would have scowled if she'd seen the mess he'd been reduced to. He could almost picture her mocking tone: 'What are you, a little kid? Get up, Cillian.' And then there were his parents, they who would react with brutality as well as scorn, whose treatment of his softer side necessitated its concealment from the world. They were the reason he never cried.[break][break]

Gavin's fingers find Emma's, steady hand squeezing hers.[break][break]

"I'll talk to you about it next time, OK?" He pauses, clarifies. "If I'm going to put myself in that kind of danger, I mean. I didn't realise you were so worried about it."[break][break]

He should have realised. It's clear in hindsight that what he'd taken for disinterest in legendaries had in fact been an attempt to dissuade him from going at all.[break][break]

"It spoke to me, you know. Articuno."

This hadn't been the scenario she'd expected, and yet she wasn't deterred by it. Pressed tight against his chest, she feels safe for the first time in her life. The anger in her chest ceases to beat with such ferocity, tempered by those three words.[break][break]

She exhales as his fingers find hers, weaving between, holding tight. He is a comfort to her, one that she didn't know she needed until he was right there. [break][break]

"I don't want there to be a next time."[break][break]

As she says this her nails dig into his back, biting in their urgency. She holds him tighter, presses her body closer. It was subtle, but she was shaking, too.[break][break]

She says nothing, however, in response to his mention of Articuno speaking to him. It wasn't that she didn't care, it was that she didn't want him to. Legendaries were dangerous, tempting. They spoke of offers beyond human comprehension, expectation, reality. She wanted no part of that. Especially not for him.

He endures the realisation in silence. Emma has dismantled so many parts of him he'd thought he understood and rebuilt them stronger than before. Was he strong enough to bury such temptations for good?[break][break]

How many times, since discovering the existence of avatars, had Gavin pictured returning to Galar with the power of a god at his fingertips? Are you proud of me now? How many times had he craved the sort of power that would render him irreplaceable among Rockets ranks?[break][break] Innumerable.[break][break]

Yet his words had carried fierce truth: he loved Emma.[break][break]

How much would he be willing to put aside, for love?[break][break]

"Why?" he asks, soft. "Because you fear for me?"

She rests against him like this until her breathing slows. But despite her best attempts to relax, her grip is still tight, tense. His breath tickles her hair and she chooses to focus on it, on the warmth, the steadiness, the rhythm of his breathing.[break][break]

And then he asks a question and she pulls away to look at him. Her eyes are dark amidst their golden glow. They search his briefly before holding his amber eyes with purpose, severity.[break][break]

"Because I fear them, and what that power will do to you. Power leads to temptation, to recklessness. I know how strong you are, Gavin, but I know that power is a sickness that corrupts even the strongest people."

Emma's golden gaze burns into his own, and Gavin does not look away. He holds her gaze, steady, for as important as his ambitions are to him, this fear of corruption was clearly important to her.[break][break]

There is an urge to respond with defiance, fire: Do you know how strong I am? He reins it in.[break][break]

"What do you fear it would do to me, that Rocket couldn't?"[break][break]

Rocket has necessitated many evils that haunt him in the darkest hours after midnight, when sleep evades him. He is no hero, but he does not see himself a villain. He is not without moral, reason.[break][break]

"If not me, that power will go to someone else. Perhaps someone more susceptible to that corruption."[break][break]

Though he presents counterpoints, his tone remains calm and level. He isn't trying to argue with her so much as he is willing her to understand him.

She notes the flicker in his eyes, the response that goes unspoken. It warrants her own stiffness in return, a quiet exhale.[break][break]

Her own response is beaten back in an attempt for peace, though peace is the last thing on her mind. His question is warranted but her beliefs are already set aflame.[break][break]

"It's never enough."[break][break]

Rocket has already corrupted them both. They have already been promised power, control. They've been given it, at a cost, and that cost is to keep climbing. [break][break]

"Then let it corrupt someone else, Gavin. Don't let power drive you mad."[break][break]

In a way, Emma does understand. But she is adamant in her position against his rise to power - not because of envy or jealousy, but in fear of what he may become. She had seen the way power corrupted those with good intentions; and Gavin was even less a hero than others.

Wouldn't, because this wasn't an ultimatum — as in all things, Gavin is deliberate with his choice of words.[break][break]

Much as he does not want to choose between Emma and his personal goals, he loathes the idea of forcing that choice upon her. She could choose to leave. Worse, she could choose to stay and perhaps be forever embittered by his forcing her hand.[break][break]

At least if, in the end, the choice is his to make... he knows he would not hold it against her.[break][break]

"I've spent my entire life in pursuit of power. It hasn't corrupted me yet." Emma might see him in a different light, but Gavin truly believes his words. "What makes you think this power would be any different?"

Emma's expression is pained and she finds herself subconsciously pulling away. It isn't that she doesn't believe in him or the passion behind his words. She can see that he truly believes in what he's saying, in what he believes he's capable of. [break][break]

"You can't see it, can you? Are you listening to yourself?"[break][break]

She stands, separating herself from their comfortable embrace. This time, she's watching him and her eyes swim with sadness.[break][break]

"Look how far you've come, how much power and control you already have. And yet you don't see how it's already affecting you and encouraging you to have more. You'll never be satisfied, Gavin. The power of a God isn't any different, once you have it you'll just expect more, and more."[break][break]

I can't watch that happen to someone else.

He doesn't expect her to pull away; it hurts more than it should, but he disguises it in his expression. He feels too small, looking up at her from the ground, and so he gets to his feet and brushes dead grass from knees.[break][break]

She is painting him as someone he does not want to be, and this, too, carries a harsh sting.[break][break]

"Is that how you see me?" Rather than accusing, he sounds tired, sad. "As someone who won't stop until it destroys them?"[break][break]

They've both seen it: Rockets driven mad by their ambitions. He'd seen it in the history books, in his own family tree. I will never be like them. Emma didn't believe it. It's hard not to feel like she doesn't believe in him.[break][break]

He has no idea that she's lived this before.

But it's what she believes will happen, whether she wants it to or not. She's seen it before first-hand, the corruption that comes with the hunger for power. She lost everything to it once.[break][break]

Her shoulders sag when he insists she can help him, can protect him, can prevent him from going too far. And yet she can't help but feel helpless even now, because here she is, desperately trying to convince him. She's already doing her best and he's refusing.[break][break]

"Someone said that to me once before and I couldn't protect them. I can't watch you fall -- I can't lose you, too."

It clicks, and something in Gavin's expression softens. He recalls the way she'd closed off at the mention of siblings, wonders if her brother is the one she'd lost to these pursuits. There's no good way to ask.[break][break]

"I didn't realise it was so personal."[break][break]

The stubborn edge has melted from his voice. He does not offer the usual platitudes: I'm sorry for your loss. He doesn't tell her that it'll be different, with him, because how can he argue against an experience that clearly haunted her?[break][break]

"I wouldn't choose it over you." No amount of power, not even the power of a god, was worth losing the one person who'd ever managed to sneak past his defenses. "That I can promise. You won't lose me. No matter what."

His pity, if one could call it that, encourages Emma to look away. She won't be victim to her emotions, won't let the softness of his tone encourage her into false hope. She's heard it before, the empty promises, the vows.[break][break]

I am yours and you are mine.[break][break]

Those words had meant something, once. Now the woman who had spoken them was gone and Emma had been left behind.[break][break]

"Don't make promises you can't keep."[break][break]

There's grief in her words, then, and she can't bring herself to meet his gaze. The hunger for power had stolen Freya from her. It had gotten her brother killed. It had driven Emma on this path of torment and destruction. Because, after all, hadn't she been driven by the hunger for more power, once?

He hesitates on a shaky exhale. You were always weak. His father could affect him even hundreds of miles away and across an ocean. Perhaps not even the power of a god could live up to his incredible expectations.[break][break] Perhaps nothing ever would.[break][break]

Even with that knowledge tucked somewhere deep, Gavin doesn't want to give up the pursuit, but—[break][break]
