Rocket's underbosses. Two opposing forces whose refusals to yield to one another didn't change the fact that they were working toward the same ends. It is their means that differ: Gavin, who prides himself on stealth and subtlety, versus Dominic's brutal force.[break][break]

Tonight, they do things Dominic's way.[break][break]

The pirates have long been a nuisance to Rocket HQ. They've been little more than gnats buzzing around an angry beast in comparison, but a recent boost in their strength and numbers lends reason to their elimination.[break][break]

Perhaps the two have been placed together in an attempt to see them settle their differences. Perhaps it's for a laugh. Perhaps it's simply because the two of them will ensure the job is done right. Gavin chooses to believe the latter. Personal issues with the man aside, Sinclair is incredibly capable. Gavin trusts him as a Rocket, if not as an individual.[break][break]

Gavin meets him on a darkened dock; there is no need to check in with the shipyard, for Remiel Calcifet's influence protects them. Moonlight catches on the silvered feathers of Gavin's Corviknight.[break][break]

Gavin offers a curt nod. "Ready?"

dominic sinclair no longer knows the source of the adrenaline pulsing through his veins. it could be that which he injects directly into the bloodstream - a needle digging into skin, a hot rush. it could be memory alone - of kanto cities set alight, of flames licking at black, starless skies.

he has no delusions about his purpose in hoenn - dominic knows he’s a loaded gun that just needs to be pointed into a direction and fired. today it’s at a location just beyond the horizon and so he paces the docks with his gaze fixed on the expanse of sea, cigarette smoke curling from parted lips.

if the body is the canvas of a life lived, then dominic’s profile can be read in the planes of tattooed skin, ink rendered illegible by vestiges of scars.

the beat of wings makes dominic halt his prowling to face his counterpart. he regards the man for a long moment before speaking.

"gavin," dominic says slowly, putting weight on each syllable. his eyes narrow with mirth, teeth glinting as his mouth widens into the gash of a humourless smile.

"sure. maybe you can actually keep up this time."

he doesn’t feel the need to clarify; dominic has made no secret of his derision regarding how littleroot played out. he doesn’t wait for an answer and if one came it would be drowned out by the sound of him clicking open two pokemon capsules to release a hydreigon and togekiss.

dominic gives a short whistle, prompting the hydreigon to lower itself allowing him to mount in a smooth motion. the togekiss chirps a greeting and settles itself on dominic’s shoulder, folding its wings neatly.

a TAILWIND courtesy of the hydreigon whips up around the two men and their respective pokemon and dominic shoots gavin a brief look, teeth still bared in a sneer. urged onward by the burst of air around them, the hydreigon arches its necks and hurtles into the sky with a snarl.

A life lived too long under Rocket's grip is reflected in the scars that map memories into Gavin's skin, bruised knuckles suggesting at recent bouts in the underground ring; perhaps this is the reason instinct urges him to punch Dominic.[break][break]

It would be exhilarating, he thinks, to feel the crunch of cartilage beneath his fist.[break][break]

Something else a long life under Rocket has taught him is restraint. His fingers don't so much as curl into a fist, and the twitch of his fingers could be read as a craving for the cigarette smoke the other fans across the docks with his breath. That maddening craving he's been trying to kick, made most difficult in moments like these.[break][break]

Mention of Littleroot, albeit veiled, sees Gavin's nostrils flare with suppressed rage. No. He won't give the satisfaction of rising to the bait.[break][break]

The tailwind catches in Corviknight's wings, providing a burst of speed for the hulking bird as it bears him toward the horizon. His Rotom keeps him up to date on the coordinates as they fly; the ocean is an endless expanse of blue upon which it is easy to get lost.[break][break]

They don't.[break][break]

The ship looms, and Corviknight circles low. Silvered feathers shimmer with IRON DEFENSES. No effort is made to conceal their presence: as the pirates below begin to catch on to the danger, the Galarian corvid pulls into a steep dive and slams into one of them, knocking them clear off the ship. It swings around to assault another with its beak, the DRILL PECK sending a spray of blood across the deck. Gavin was no fan of violence, but there was nothing he did in half-measures.

as they draw close to the ship, a HYDRO PUMP bursts up at them, though the hydreigon avoids being hit by veering violently to the side. the pokemon stills its hovering wings and drops to the deck of the ship, sending the steel below shuddering under its weight. as dominic slides off its back, two more capsules in hand, the hydreigon swings its three heads around, each one CRUNCHING at both pokemon and human alike. dominic can hear the sound of wet masticating, of bones yielding and snapping in the hydreigon’s jaw.

dominic ducks behind one of the hydreigon’s wings for cover as he releases his houndoom. the pokemon takes shape, its face already a twisted snarl at the water underneath its paws, his head lowered and the vicious curve of its horns glinting in the gloom. dominic steps from behind his pokemon to a stack of crates, covered from further attacks but close enough to all three pokemon to issue orders effectively.

sweep the deck clean, break through the lower floors, sink the ship to the depths, leave. it’s so simple that when he reaches for the mega-accessory for his houndoom, balancing between his fingers idly, dominic feels something akin to disappointed boredom settling on the back of his tongue. his eyes flicker to gavin’s position momentarily.

glancing up to his coasting togekiss, dominic whistles to catch its attention and jerks his chin toward the houndoom. seeing its canine ally below, the togekiss will recognise attempt to offer it some support - the pokemon’s METRONOME will react positively with its SUPER LUCK as a SUNNY DAY is executed over the ship. in the night, the sunlight cast from the togekiss has an eerie hue - the lustre brilliant and so artificially warm that it sears at dominic’s skin just like the real thing. driven by the burst of heat, the houndoom rounds on a clustered group of pirates and their water-types and unhinges its jaw to blast them with an immediate and potent SOLAR BEAM.

against the blinding glare, dominic can see the houndoom’s muscles shift as though intending to lurch forward to finish its targets with its teeth and he has to yell out to him to call him back - too early, not yet.

Gavin is close enough to hear the brutal crunch of cartilage and bone beneath the Hydreigon's bite. His Corviknight's beak is streaked red, its victim wailing as they grip at the gaping wound it had left. A gunshot cracks across the ocean as Gavin puts a premature end to the suffering. He was here to eradicate, not to torture.[break][break]

Eradicate he does, with the cold efficiency of one that's been sent to do this before. Gavin's Sandslash is a violent terror that rarely sees the light of day; it emerges now into artificial daylight, darkened spines glittering in the eerie glow. Frost spreads beneath the corrupted creature where it's released, snarling. Gavin whistles sharply to stay its hand before it summons hail or blizzards; Houndoom and Corviknight could handle it, but the Togekiss and Hydreigon would be less fortunate.[break][break]

Unable to do as it pleases, Sandslash exacts its FRUSTRATION on any who dare to come close — Gavin keeps his distance, finding cover behind cargo near the eastern rail. He pulls the pin from his glasses, and Corviknight blasts along the length of the ship with a self-sacrificing STEEL BEAM. It is forced to come to ROOST, perching on the prow.[break][break]

Dhelmise is Gavin's final weapon. The water ripples around the ghostly anchor as it's released alongside the boat, lurking on the edge of the artificial sunlight like a predator stalking its prey. When they were done, it would drag the ship to its watery grave.

the hydreigon will take to the skies to join the togekiss as gavin’s corviknight cuts a swathe down down the length of the deck, its ROAR reverberating against the steel; were any of the pirates in its immediate vicinity intending to use their pokemon as shields, they’ll find themselves defenseless as their pokemon are cast back to their capsules.

shrapnel in the wake of the STEEL BEAM is scattered across the ship, and with the path forward cleared and the artificial sunlight still glinting across the water’s surface, dominic deems he and the houndoom are ready.

he steps out from his cover, mega accessory in hand aglow as it forces the houndoom’s body to contort almost unnaturally for a moment. its horns surge forward in a sharp growth, armored steel protruding out of ink black fur as it MEGA EVOLVES. strengthened by its SOLAR POWER, the pokemon waits for a single nod from its trainer before it lunges forward, an INFERNO gathering around the pokemon as it throws itself into the group of defanged, now pokemon-less pirates. from his location, dominic can hear screams and smell burning hair.

he doesn’t wait or watch, dipping around a corner to move toward the single doorway leading below deck. at his movement, the togekiss dips down to follow its trainer until dominic reaches the door. he was intending to hoist it open but the people coming up from below beat him to it. as the door is flung open to reveal a trio with pokeballs in hand, dominic whistles to the togekiss, flicking his hand at them with a vague hand gesture. another SUPER LUCKY METRONOME results in their opponents being coated in a layer of STUN SPORES. as their muscles seize up and spasms, forcing them to collapse to the floor, dominic reaches for his own gun if only to spare his togekiss from having to dirty its pristine white body in blood.

three gunshots ring out across the ship’s deck.

With their Pokemon sent back to their capsules, the pirates are rendered defenseless. They are opportunists that prey upon the weak and feel no need to carry weapons, woefully unprepared for the vicious retribution of Rocket.[break][break]

Missions like these, Gavin closes off the part of him that might hesitate to take a life. Already, they have claimed several. The air fills with the choking scent of burning flesh, hair, wood. It roils in Gavin's stomach and rises bile in his throat. He swallows it back, claims more victims with the crack of gunfire across the ocean. Somewhere down below, the shots seem to echo. Either Dominic has run into trouble, or else he is the trouble: Gavin would put money on the latter.[break][break]

His Corviknight recovers, lifting off from its perch and beating its wings to DEFOG the air. Smoke scatters to the winds, but nothing can get rid of the smell.[break][break]

The bird's assault has torn a chasm through the hull. Gavin prowls along its edges for the safest point of entry, catching only the edge of his shirt on splintered wood. His clothes are already ruined regardless: smoke, ash, blood that is not his own. He pays it no mind. Precious cargo beckons like a dragon's hoard — in place of gold, there are stolen Pokemon and plundered jewels.[break][break]

Gavin is not surprised to find Dominic unscathed.[break][break]

"All clear above." He thumbs back in the direction of the spoils. "Soon as we get this shit secure, Dhelmise'll bring down the boat."[break][break]

dominic is sifting through the crates and storage containers below the deck when he sees gavin’s shadow appear in the doorway, followed by the sound of the man’s voice; clear and calm. dominic offers a non-committal hum in response, slamming down the lid of one wooden box with a little more force than necessary. he had expected pokemon capsules or energy-infused ore from meteor falls - the kind so highly sought for refinement by league and rocket alike - but he had come out wanting.

refusing to leave empty-handed, dominic rummages with more aggression, knocking boxes from shelves just to see the contents more quickly as it spills across the steel underfoot. his expression is set to a silent snarl because these people had decided to be absolutely fucking worthless to him in death as well as in life. coming across a stack of cases, dominic snaps one open and raises an appraising eyebrow when he sees that the interior is studded with carefully packaged pokeballs - their warmth and gravity tells him they’re filled, and he lifts the cases before ascending back to the deck.

dominic steps over a body and throws a case to gavin for him to catch, tone heavy with a dark mirth when he says, "plundered loot but i dunno what’s in ‘em. these fuckers really had nothing else." he scoffs and gives a shake of his head in disbelief as he brushes past gavin to make his way over to where the smoke billowed off the ship, a heavy dark plume heralding where he had left his houndoom. with no living targets remaining, the pokemon prowled across the deck aimlessly - its fur licked by the remnants of flame and its maw twisted into a perpetual snarl. dominic returns it to its capsule and whistles to summon his hydreigon from where it hovered in the sky above them.

Gavin catches the tossed case, one sharp corner digging against his ribs. He adjusts his grip without complaint. "Market'll take anything so we'll turn a profit, but they could've had the decency to cough up something more interesting."[break][break]

He has no sympathy for pirates, and it shows in the cold edge to his tone. He does not like to kill, but he feels little as he navigates the deck around broken and charred bodies. The healing wound in Gavin's shoulder burns with the effort of carrying the case. They'd signed their death warrant when they'd decided to conduct business on Rocket seas.[break][break]

In Galar, Corviknight are used to ferry passengers. Now, Gavin utilizes the bird's strength as he secures the cases to his mount. Some of Corviknight's feathers are warped from the heat of the battle and Gavin pats its beak in silent apology. He'll fix it later. For now, he swings up onto the avian's broad back and holds on as it takes to the skies. Returning his Sandslash to its prison, he waits until Dominic and his Pokemon are clear of the condemned vessel before he whistles sharply to draw the attention of his Dhelmise.[break][break]

"Bring it down!"[break][break]

ANCHOR SHOT sees the living seaweed chain loop several times around the ship before drawing tight. Dhelmise hunted Wailord for sport; this boat was easy prey. Gavin remains until the boat disappears into the deep, then returns the ghost-type and makes for the submarine.
