Voluntary isolation. To Gavin, it's simply an extension of their Galarian getaway — minus the comforts of the hotel, the cold, and the constant concern he'd run into someone he knew. Here, there is only Gavin and Emma.[break][break]

There is also a particularly loud Pelipper combing the beach, its cries interrupting the meditative energy of the island.[break][break]

Gavin glowers at it. It shits in the sand.[break][break]

"If that thing doesn't shut up, I know what we're having for dinner," he drawls. "I think our first step is to get off the beach and set up shelter further in."[break][break]

As Gavin was a vocal defender of Rocket's underground status, this island getaway had been an idea proposed to figure out an extensive survival guide in the Hoennian wilds. If any of their less experienced members had to go off-grid and hide from the league, but had no experience roughing it in the wild, they'd need guidancee.[break][break]

In theory, anyone could have helped. In practice, Emma's the only one he can stand to be trapped with.

Emma keeps pace but she seems distracted, her mind already hyper-focused on the task. This was meant to be, surely, an extension of their honeymoon period from Galar. The honeymoon period quickly blown out of proportion with harpoons and near-drowning.[break][break]

Even now, her chest hurt if she pushed herself too hard, her breathing still not up to snuff. She hid it well though, like a sick bird.[break][break]

When Gavin refers to the squawking bird, she glances at it if only to support him. Until then, she hadn't heard it or paid it any mind. Background noise, a distraction she had learned how to filter out. [break][break]

"Delicious."[break][break]

She maintains her distance from him only out of habit: she was in work mode. If he had any intention of relaxing, he would need to coax her into it.

He admires her when she's like this — sharpened focus, all efficiency and determination. There's a languid smile on Gavin's lips as he watches the cogs turn in her brain. How fortunate he had been to end up with her.[break][break]

"Care to share those plans of yours, love?" His voice is gentle, teasing. "Or are you going to leave me to fend for myself?"

He's more than capable of roughing it. In his youth, before he'd become adept at avoiding the authorities, he'd spent many a night beneath the stars. Granted, he'd usually come more prepared than this, but he understood the concepts. Food, water, shelter, heat. They probably didn't have to worry too much about heat. He's already sweating under the watchful glare of the sun.

It is Gavin's gentle tone that brings her out of her thoughts. Like a moth to flame, she listens, following him. For a moment, the severity in her gaze softens upon meeting his. He's changed her, molded her into something less sharp.[break][break]

"I would never leave you."[break][break]

There is affection in her tone despite the seriousness of her expression. As if the mere thought - even teasing - was enough to confuse her. She glances away, deeper into the island. The ideal plan would likely be to seek out a place of shelter, even one that could be temporary. The last thing they wanted was to have nowhere to rest their head when the day waned. [break][break]

"We should look for a place we can either build a shelter or make use of what's already there."

His stomach still flips and flutters each time she gives him that look; her golden gaze burns into his amber, and Gavin smiles in the way that only she ever sees.[break][break]

"I know."[break][break]

He does not trust easily, but he trusts her completely.[break][break]

She has kept her distance, but he draws close as they survey the looming jungle ahead. There is a current between them that he feels like a tingle in his spine. Later. They will have plenty of time for play once their work is done.[break][break]

They venture forth until the sound of rushing water beckons — the jungle opens to a beautiful paradise in its center, a waterfall crashing into a pool below. Gavin stands in awe of nature for a moment, curling an arm around Emma. She's warm against him, a familiar comfort in foreign land.[break][break]

"That's water taken care of."[break][break]

It's fresh and not stagnant, fed from the river above and feeding a stream that snakes off to their left. There's space enough around the pool to make camp. Food will be another issue — one they can worry about later.[break][break]

"Shall we take a dip?"

And, in return, her own chest squeezes with something she can only describe as affection when he returns her gaze, when he smiles at her. It's a foreign body, always keeping her on edge, alert. But she has grown to seek it out, and so when he approaches her she finds herself measuring every breath, the magnetism he exudes is distracting.[break][break]

They stumble upon what could only be described as paradise. Part of her wonders just how hard this assignment could possibly if it had been this easy to find such a welcoming and perfect place to set up a makeshift camp. But her thoughts are dashed when Gavin's arm curls around her, tugging her close. She allows it, willing to share her warmth with him, even if it is unbearably hot as it is.[break][break]

She can already picture the area they'll set up camp, where they can build a fire. But, of course, the sweat dripping from her temple and the hike it had taken to get here had caused enough discomfort that the temptation to take a dip, as Gavin suggested, was impossible to ignore. [break][break]

"I suppose we can spare a moment to cool off." [break][break]

The woman wastes no time in removing articles of clothing, setting them aside somewhere dry before wading into the cool water. It flushes her skin with goosebumps at first, and she glances over her shoulder, her gaze half-lidded, inviting.[break][break]

"Coming?"[break][break]

It would be a short swim to the waterfall.

Emma slips free of her clothes, a feast for the eyes that watch her with hunger. He will never tire of seeing her like this, sunlight filtering through the trees to catch upon the map of her scarred skin. Beautiful.[break][break]

Gavin removes his glasses first, folds them neatly and sets them upon a smooth stone. He does not need them to see. They helped him avoid straining his eyes when staring at lines of data for hours or the blue glow of his laptop. He does not need them to see her, crystal clear as she wades into the water, sweat glistening along her spine.[break][break]

He would follow her anywhere.[break][break]

Habit sees him fold his clothes neatly along the shore, but impatience makes for a sloppier result. He cannot get into the water fast enough, sediment rising around his steps as he wades deeper. She is ahead of him now, elegant strokes cutting through the water, and he shelves his fear of the depths as he kicks off from the bottom and starts to swim.[break][break]

He joins Emma beneath the waterfall, the spray scattering across his skin.[break][break]

"Afraid I can't let you cool off just yet," he murmurs, capturing her with an embrace. A rush of heat battles the cool water as he kisses her, fierce.

She does not wait for him, not really. There is enough trust there to know that he would follow her. [break][break]

And, just as she breaks out from under the crash of the waterfall to pull her hair from her face and whisk it away from her eyes, she can hear Gavin arriving next to her. Her vision is bleary as he surfaces in front of her, but even through the droplets and her adjusting vision, she can see him. The sharp angle of his jaw, the way his hair sits now that it is wet. His golden hair is reduced to dark strands, brushed aside.[break][break]

Emma is not shy in her meticulous study, not even when the spray of the water nearby leaves sparkling drops against her shoulders. She can feel the gravel of some sort of shore beneath her feet, but they are far enough away from it that they need to focus on staying afloat.[break][break]

But before she could collect her thoughts, her breath is stolen from her. Gavin lays claim to her, pulling her close into a fierce kiss. He is warm and she feels heat trinkle into her limbs, a hunger. She matches his ferocity with her own, melding her body tight to his, inseparable.

They join beneath the spray in private passion, alone but for the waterfall's liquid embrace. There is an added element of thrill and danger in the need to stay afloat, lest it be more than the kiss that takes their breath away.[break][break]

Romantic as it is, the water is a poor playground for the deepest of their desires — Gavin breaks from the kiss with mischievous intent.

"How long can you hold your breath?"[break][break]

It's a question and a challenge, posed moments before he kisses her again and pulls her beneath the waterfall. It thunders around them, battering his injured shoulder and roaring in his ears, but he does not break contact. It's a rush, fear lending to his adrenaline as the water eclipses the pair.

The brief second where her lips aren't caught against his is the only moment she'll have to take a breath. Her eyes catch his mischievous glint, fumbling over the way his lips move and the words that come out. He makes her dizzy and it isn't a feeling she neglects. She hungers for it, for him, for his hands to peruse her body as they pleased. To tangle in her hair, to not let her go.[break][break]

She has forgotten the crash of the waterfall as it sprays at their backs, gets in their eyes, threatens to pull them under. Perhaps it is because she has now been pulled beneath the surface now, Gavin's hands grabbing, pinching at her skin. They are aggressive and passionate and the bruises she may retain will be worth it. Her own hands latch onto his arms, coiling around him with equal fervor.[break][break]

His lips find hers a second time and breath bubbles to the surface as she meets him. She can already feel the pressure of the water, the lack of air, it pleads in her thundering ears and the rapid beating of her heart. And yet she does not dare fail, too enamored in being selfish. She indulges in his passion, his heat. She wants more, more, more.

Her grip is like steel, firm and unyielding, anchoring them together even as the force of the waterfall threatens to rip them apart. Gavin's hands pinch, prod, explore, finding places they should not go. He is dizzy from adrenaline and lack of air. His head swims with it, with her, and the importance of their mission here is lost to lust.[break][break]

The kiss is fevered, desperate, until at last they are forced to break apart lest they surrender to the water. Gavin's left gasping for breath with cheeks pink and flesh marked red-and-purple, a flush of heat keeping him off-balance even as air floods his lungs.[break][break]

"I love you," is lost to the roar of the waterfall, but she would see his lips form the words.[break][break]

He indulges in her further, lips marking jaw, neck, throat.

She clings to him with fervor, desperation, greed. Her fingers leave marks along his back, a reminder. Emma's lungs protest the lack of oxygen and the fierceness of her heartbeat. Her body strains against the power of the waterfall, muscles straining to keep her upright, keep her close.[break][break]

And when they finally break she sucks in air, gasping. Her breathing is heavy, skin warm where it's been pinched. Passion keeps her blood pumping despite the cold water. The roar of the water is too loud to make out any other sound, but she catches the movement of his lips and it both warms her heart and sends it plummeting to her toes.[break][break]

He said it again: I love you. And the way his eyes devour her, she knows it isn't a show of pretty words. The way his teeth mark her jaw, her neck, her throat. His hunger is insatiable and she is endless. With every touch, she turns to gold.

Beneath claiming claw-marks, Emma explores a plateau of flesh with ridged with scars. They map out his flaws, his weaknesses, and yet he feels nothing less than perfect. Confidence forged in the fires of their embrace blooms proud in his chest, filling his lungs where the air has left them. As he gasps for breath, chest rising and falling, that confidence remains.[break][break]

In the aftermath, as his heart rate slows, Gavin slips from beneath the torrent and tugs her by the hand. He stays close, limbs intertwined and fingers sliding through her damp hair.[break][break]

"Mm," he purrs, eyes half-lidded as they feast upon her, "perhaps I had ulterior motives when asking you here."

His canines flash in a grin that is both predatory and sweet, hunger offset by the obvious fondness in his tone.

The droplets sprayed from the waterfall linger on exposed skin, sliding down her cheek, coating her in a natural glow. [break][break]

Her hands never stop wandering and she is aggressive in her pursuit of glory, nails biting into his. She lays claim to what is hers, only ceasing when he breaks away for air. As his mouth parts, hers continues to seek warmth. Gavin may pull away, pulling her along with him by the end of her hand -- but her lips find purchase against his jaw, leaving a trail of affection down his throat, across his collar bone.[break][break]

She hums, a quiet moan in response to his purring. The man's fingers in her hair draw her attention back to his face, she leans into it, against him, accepting him.[break][break]

"Perhaps you did - I like what you had in mind, though."[break][break]

His teeth flash with a predatory smile, tempered only by the fondness in his tone. In the depths of Emma's gaze, a gaze once hardened and impossible to read, she shows only affection. Her hands rise slowly to wrap around his face, her thumbs brushing away droplets of water. She exhales slowly, observing him.[break][break]

The kiss she delivers is softer this time, followed by a surprisingly soft embrace.[break][break]
