"we need to go soon, deux."

it's past midnight as he sits underneath a familiar tree with his luxray by his side. his hand runs over the gentle coat of the electric-type, keeping him company for as long as time permits.

tonight is the night he leaves hoenn.

luxray rests his head on silas' lap. "i don't want to go either. but we have to." his voice is exhausted, defeated, and his features reflect the same.

"we have to."

and yet, he's sat underneath his favorite spot in all of hoenn, dragging out a single moment into eternity.

the low but audible SNARL is what snaps him out of it. he tenses up, immediately assuming guard as he shifts onto his feet. deux does the same: his mane glows with a CHARGE that's volatile in nature.

it seems as though the world doesn't want him here. it wants him in kanto, in rocket, where he belongs because that's his birthright.

that's all he ever will be.

the realization is saddening; it brings a tear to his eye but he blinks it away because it's a sign of weakness, and weakness was beat out of him long ago.

whistle.

deux ends the battle before it even begins.

his body tells him to flee, to run as fast as he can but his heart stops him. he can't bare to leave this place; he has to, but he'll drag it out for as long as possible and enjoy what little of it he has left.

the night sky and how it's littered with bright stars; the low hue of lights illuminating from within buildings; it kills him that he has to leave but he isn't brave enough to fight back.

he's scared of dying.

scrafty is another sign, another pokemon that appears to rush him out of the city. its FOCUS PUNCH is interrupted before it even has a chance to start its attack.

once again, deux ends the battle before it even begins.

he reaches their pier where he's supposed to start his new life; his assigned life, but it's not like he hasn't fought it before. it always leads to nowhere. maybe in a different life but not this one: this is not his life to live.

"i don't want to go."

he says it again for deux, for himself, as he steps onto the wooden docks. a boat awaits him, but he stops before it, scared to take another step forward.

the third and final sign is what ushers him forward. it's the final push he needs to accept his new life. deux takes care of the sharpedo and he catches it as a memory, as a reminder of what his life once was.

what it could have been.
