A pack of Lycanroc had begun to aggressively dominate the deepest reaches of the Petalburg Woods. Their howls echoed in the darkness of these old woods. Remiel had heard all the warnings about them on the way in, but (wrongfully) doubted they would cause him any trouble. Now he found himself running through wilderness with his Dragapult in tow as the bipedal Midnight Form wolves gave persistent chase.[break][break]

Just ahead of him, he saw what appeared to be the shadowy silhouette of a rather large one appear out from behind a tree. Wasting no time to assess the figure any further, Remiel pointed ahead as he ran. "Dragon Darts!" He commanded, completely unaware that the dark figure ahead was, in fact, . And, even though Mephisto knew the difference, the dragon was compelled to fire out of sheer discipline alone.[break][break]

"Skweeee!"

The pair of Dreepy whistled in unison, blasted from the Dragapult's horns at such an intense speed that they hardly had time to swerve around the trees in their way. Should they make contact, with anything, they would explode in two separate bursts of draconic flame before slowly reassembling themselves from the ether. Not long after, Remiel and his Dragapult would reach the spot where the mysterious figure once stood.

"Obstruct." ushered the shadowy figure. Instantly, an Obstagoon stepped forward, crossing her arms before her and generating a shield of darkness energy. The Dreepies collided with the shield, leaving no marks to the pokemon, or the trainer behind her: Balder Schwartz. He knew the attack was issued by precaution, it wasn't a wrong decision.[break][break]

As the boy arrived beside him, Balder looked at the second pokemon that was with him. "Show time, Mizuryuu. Scatter them." The Kingdra floated forward, setting itself a few feet in front of the group. As the pack of Lycanrocs Midnight became apparent, the water dragon proceeded to user Hydro Pump amidst their ranks, hoping to scatter them.[break][break]

During the assault, Balder looked at the person that had just joined them with his Dragapult, arms crossed upon his chest. "I believe I don't have to say how foolish it was to go in the woods alone, with that pack around? You're lucky someone in Petalburg warned me about your presence here. Do you still have the strength to fight?" As he said those last words, Balder unfolded his arms and presented a hand to Remiel, in case he needed it to get back up or get stability

The fired Dreepy had been blocked by an Obstagoon equally as intimidating as the Midnight Lycanroc that chased them. With an open maw, and a terrifying rattle of a growl, Mephisto had intended to crash into the Obstagoon with a Steel Wing and clear the way for his master. When Remiel finally noticed the trainer standing behind it, however, he called off the attack just in time. "Heel!" He commanded, watching as the Dragapult snapped its mouth shut and swooped upwards into the night sky just a few feet before colliding with the other trainer's pokémon.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the pack of snarling wolves still remained at his heels. Seeing the mysterious trainer in front of him summon a Kingdra, Remiel was quick to take cover behind a tree moments before the Lycanroc were hosed away by a powerful Hydro Pump. It was during this time that Mephisto reemerged from a shadowy portal that appeared from the tree just above Remiel's head. Climbing onto the dragon's horned head with relative ease, Remiel braced himself as it sunk back into the portal with its PHANTOM FORCE. They would reappear out from a tree near the mysterious trainer, at which point Remiel would hop off the dragon.[break][break]

He'd expected some sort of scolding from the older gentleman. After all, he'd been fired upon due to nothing more than a misunderstanding. But the individual didn't seem to care about his close call with Mephisto's explosive darts. In fact, he seemed more exasperated that Remiel was here in the first place than anything else. "I may have underestimated their numbers," The black-haired royal admits, his blue-grey eyes scanning the figure in the darkness of the forest and beginning to realize exactly who he was dealing with. "But they simply caught me off guard. I'm fine."[break][break]

When the man presented his hand, Remiel firmly shook it. "You're Balder Scwhartz, aren't you? Remiel Calcifet. I'm the new Galarian ambassador to Hoenn." Before goes any further, the nonchalant prince shifts his gaze towards the direction where the Lycanroc had once been. Their howls echo throughout the night. They've been fended off... but only temporarily. Feeling Mephisto's presence looming above him in the air, Remiel continues. "This is Mephistopheles. We apologize for firing upon you." He adds, returning his attention to the man.[break][break]

So the man and his pokemon were fine. That's good. Less to worry about in that case, and more fighting power added to the cause. They would need it if they wanted to calm that pack of Lycanrocs before worse things happened. The guy presented himself as the Galarian Ambassador, while also noting the identity of his savior.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of my celebrity, but we'll skip that part. And you don't have to apologize for that, you were on alert and I was prepared for such a thing to happen in a forest in the dark of night." Balder called his Obstagoon into her pokeball and proceeded to advance a few steps with Kingdra in tow until Remiel asked if he had come to save the ambassador. The Alolan giant turned his head, looking over his shoulder.[break][break]

"To be honest, no I'm not exactly here to save you. It was one of the goals though. But my main concern is the pack of Lycanrocs." Balder directed his sight at the location where the beasts had fled. "These creatures generally don't form packs, especially the Midnight variant. Thus, something forced their hand and to group up... or someone's controlling them in a way or another."[break][break]

Balder took a pokeball off his belt and called another pokemon on the field: his Lycanroc Dusk. "Track them down, Lupin." Nose on the ground, the Lycanroc started smelling the traces left by the Midnights before noticing the trainers he had their scent. Balder turned halfway, looking at Remiel. "If you wish to go back to town, now's the time. Once we go deeper, you won't be able to return, as you might get surrounded. And do consider this: While I'm not one to get involved in politics, the Galarian Ambassador getting hurt in this forest would be... badly seen by the leadership. What will it be, Remiel?"

Remiel could sympathize with the unwanted celebrity. He'd lived with it literally his whole life. Though he figured Balder's introduction to this particular beast was far different from his own. As far as he could tell, the citizens of Hoenn knew him as the rambunctious muscle of the League. He'd crossed the ambassador's mind on several occasions as well, albeit more as an assessment of trouble than anything else.[break][break]

"It struck me as strange as well," The dark-haired royal chimes in, gazing off in the distance alongside the man. "They gave chase without provocation. I'm compelled to wonder whether they've had a taste of human flesh."[break][break]

Rabid creatures, he thought. Though they'd made him look like a fool, he was determined to put them down for it. Mephisto encircles his master in a gentle, soundless hover. The dragon seems to sense his desire for the hunt.[break][break]

Before long, however, Balder recalls his Obstagoon and summons a Lycanroc of his own to track the nocturnal beasts. Remiel is half-amused when the man suggests he head back. "My independence is not so easily given away, Mr. Schwartz. I suppose Hoenn really is rubbing off on me, hm?" He remarks, his nonchalant blue-grey eyes fixed on Balder's countenance beside his Dragapult's striking hues of yellow.[break][break]

Observing as the dog continues to track the scent and lead the way, the prince nods. "Let's carry on then, shall we? If we head back to town late, the rabble might start making rather inappropriate assumptions about us." Mephisto croaks as he glides ahead to do reconnaissance.[break]

A taste of human flesh huh? Interesting theory. "If that were the case, they would've been more aggressive than the actions they displayed, and fight each other for the food. But I agree that we can't push that theory away." For a creature that hunts alone, if it had tasted human flesh, logically it would still hunt alone as to not share the food with others. But who knows what could've happened for this group.[break][break]

As the Galarian Ambassador indicated that he would not give his independence away so easily, the Alolan man couldn't help but chuckle in amusement. Seems like the man was a stubborn one, possibly wanted to pay them back for hunting him but that's another matter. The fact he was ready to go was good enough.[break][break]

Nodding at his Lycanroc, Balder and the dog started moving forward. Remiel most likely followed suit, but his statement proceeded to make Balder stop and burst out laughing. "What, are you afraid the masses think you eloped with Hoenn's biggest rebel? The guy who ditched League and the Galarian Ambassador going out for some nightly activities? I highly doubt they'd promote these rumors." They did need to hurry up though, before the Midnight Lycanrocs did something.

Given the nature of Midnight Forme Lycanroc, Remiel saw reason in Balder's explanation. They were, in fact, rather solitary, possessive, and aggressive creatures by nature. The very idea of them hunting in coordinated packs was absurd to people who knew well of the species. But this had occurred tonight, in the Petalburg Woods, nonetheless. And the explanation eluded them still.[break][break]

In the meantime, the ambassador was slightly content (despite the lack of expression) to see his passing quip had inspired such laughter from the man. Perhaps the bellowing guffaw would serve to scare the Lycanroc away even further. It certainly earned the man a swift look from Remiel's Dragapult, who checked to see whether the two humans remained in good condition.[break][break]

The comment and question regarding his relationship with the council surprised the man, but not enough to stop his advance this time. "Disappointed would be a better term. I did start disliking Olivia ever since she was in the council though, and she was the reason I left too. But the others... Well I can speak of only two of them."[break][break]

Avoiding some branches, Balder remained close to Lupin, watching where he was leading them. "For , I can't say he's a good man, but he isn't a bad man for sure. He's logical, good head on his shoulders and the fact he has been chosen by Tapu Fini says enough about how he wants to protect the region." As the Alolan was saying this, he was reminded of the few interactions he had with the councilman. During the events of the New Year, where he had displayed some logical thinking and asking what happened instead of going Power Hungry like Olivia, and tracking the Alolan down to get more inquiries on his future actions.[break][break]

"The other one I can vouch for is . That one is a good man. Too good actually. To the point where he joined me, Pokkenger and a lady... I think her name was Isra Nightingale? He tagged along with a friend of his so we could venture into Ultra Space, try to save Mateo. But.... That had a really bad ending. Not something I want to delve on right now."[break][break]

"But now that Olivia is gone from their ranks... I dunno, I'd still say disappointed. They never condoned her actions following that and she most likely took my departure as a way to help herself. But now that she's gone, they didn't do anything special to make me view them differently."

After the chaos in Slateport a year ago, where he had nearly perished alongside his Flygon mount as a result of Olivia's negligence, the ambassador had conducted his own investigation into the woman. Her family history piqued his interest, to say the least. Near-death experience aside, he couldn't say he felt one way or another about her. Though he would likely have no qualms about striking her down if forced to either.

Meanwhile, Balder's opinion on FERNANDO SILPH and Orion Lykos mirrored that of several others Remiel had met in the past. The two were certainly influential in the grand scheme of things, and the young royal had plans of meeting them. But what really seized his attention in that moment was the unexpected utterance of a name that had once been as sweet to his ear as it was now filled with dread and worry: Isra Nightingale .[break][break]

Their small party advances, steadily leaving him behind as he continues to process the information. An expression quite foreign to his features-- shock and bewilderment-- dominates his face. After everything he said about the League, the group grew quiet. Balder decided to ignore the silence and focus on the task at hand, listening to the sound around. It was being way too quiet for a night, especially with a prowling bunch of Midnight Lycanrocs. There was definitely something afoot.[break][break]

Yet, the faint voice of Remiel stopped Balder in his tracks. "Ultra Space?" he said... "Lupin, hold." The Lycanroc stopped and looked behind it as the Alolan man turned around, looking at the Galarian royal who placed his hand against the tree to keep himself upright.[break][break]

"Judging from your reaction, I guess you know Isra." Balder sighed. "Happened back in January so, considering we're in August, 7 months ago. As to where she is... I don't know. She exited the Ultra Space before I did, so I'm pretty sure she's around Hoenn. But I didn't see her since then. She was gone by the time I returned to Hoenn."

At first, the guess that he 'knew' Isra seemed insulting to him, despite his awareness that Balder had no prior knowledge of their relationship. Of course Remiel knew her. But, as the circumstances of her disappearance came to forefront of his mind again, the phrasing made more sense. Perhaps he didn't know her as well as he thought he had. Perhaps he never really did at all.[break][break]

He listened and absorbed the forthcoming details with rapt attention. But, in the end, he came to realize her departure into Ultra Space did not align with her actual disappearance in their world. It was merely another piece in the puzzle, perhaps even an entirely different puzzle altogether. Hopelessness.[break][break]

Taking a deep breath, he sighs and releases his hand from the tree beside him. "I see..." He mutters, eyes downcast. If Balder expects him to say or ask anything else, he goes wanting for now. The ambassador is instead captured in solemn thought, broken only by the sound of a distant howl.[break]

The fact that the Prince of Galar simply answered "I see" did make the Alolan concerned. Was the Galarian Ambassador that close to Isra? Maybe they were dating even... For him to be looking for that crazy girl though... It seems Remiel was a desperate lover then. One for the weird ladies. After seeing her crawl and cackle to collect bones...[break][break]

A shiver went down Balder's spine as he remembered that scene. That was one of the weirdest thing he had seen in all the worlds, and he had seen lots of weird stuff. But the distant howling of the Lycanroc pack brought him back to reality. "Get ready for combat." Lupin, that was guiding them was now growling.[break][break]

Balder took two pokeballs in hands, ready to fight. Fire pokemons in the woods were not a good idea, so he was ready, keeping his Tyranitar and his Alolan Golem in hand for whenever the enemies would show.

There's more to Isra's venture into Ultra Space that Remiel cares to explore. It was something she hadn't told him about, anyway. And, if it was related in any way to her disappearance, then it was crucial for him to discover that.[break][break]

Regrettably, this was not the best time or place to catch up on such important matters. The wolf pack had returned, and this time seemingly threefold in number. Annoyed, impatient, the royal summoned a Doublade that he swiftly armed himself with afterwards.[break][break]

A great multitude of red, wolven eyes began to appear in the darkness surrounding them. Their chorus of growls reverberated in the cold, forest air. Mephisto the Dragapult swirled defensively around his master. A fight was coming.[break][break]

"Balder..." Remiel speaks, not bothering to turn over his shoulder to look at the man. The slightest hint of an opening meant the Lycanroc would strike in advance, after all. "When we deal with these creatures, you'll tell me more... yes?"[break][break]

Suddenly, one of his Doublade's eyes grew wide. The first of the Lycanroc had leapt out from a tree to attack him, but it was swiftly struck backwards when the Dragapult launched itself upward and tackled it (STEEL WING) with its glowing horns.[break]

The alolan was also ready to rush in and punch them... Until he remembered that his powers were long gone. Stepping forward in this manner would only endanger him and the others. Clenching his fist in anger, he decided to resort to the old methods. "Geo, set up the field for them! Obsidian, weaken them!"[break][break]

The A!Golem proceeded to unleash Stealth Rocks in a defensive formation around the team, to hurt the advancing Lycanrock hounds. The Tyranitar proceeded to screech at its loudest, hoping to weaken them before the impact and ensuring they are caught unaware. As for Lupin, it was biding its time, ready to leap at whoever shows up uninvited.

Balder's response left Remiel unsatisfied. There had to be more. There just had to be. This was the only lead he had. The only piece of information he had that could lead him to Isra's whereabouts... or the truth of what had happened.[break][break]

Regardless, now was not the time to press for answers when an impending Lycanroc mauling dared to threaten their lives.[break][break]

As the wolves closed in from all sides, Remiel spun forward and struck down one of them with a set of blows from the Doublade he held (IRON HEAD). Mephisto the Dragapult, in the meantime, quickly sped forward (AGILITY) before intercepting a Lycanroc that had pounced towards his master. The two swiftly disappeared into a shadowy portal afterwards.[break][break]
