the hum of her voice was cute, and he didn’t interrupt it. food distracted immediately, though, and he was making some kind of noise of approval. something like, ”woo, baby. you know i ain’t ever ready for it.”

the old woman shook her head and walked off, looking exhausted but with the small twitch of a smile.

”looks good, don’t it?” roach lifted his burger almost immediately, soon wiping gravy from his mustache and nodding, mouth still full.

“don’t look strange to me.”

it was cute how well she matched now. he bit his tongue lightly and watched her turn. women in her profession were notoriously difficult to make blush. maybe he was special. probably not, but he relished in it anyways.

he picked a lemon wedge off the side of his glass and squeezed it in his palm over the water.

”well, i’ll keep doin’ it, then.”

he could work with that.

her hands guided him further, showing him where to focus. he squeezed, feeling, curling fingers as though she were a stress ball.

”mmm.”

she was hardly a flower, no, although she did smell nice. his hands gripped and lifted her up again, this time flipping her like a delicious porterhouse, before lowering for dinner.

”that they are,” roach agreed, inclining his head a little curiously. but he let caprice continue, otherwise uninterrupted.

stealing and smuggling. so, this was the other work, and presumably, he was for hire on all fronts if he was exposing himself this easily.

roach nodded.

”ah. alright then. how do i know i can trust ya?”

it was amusing. he’d been looking more for familiarity in faces. someone like roach had to stay alert at all times.

but, he had noticed looks. jessie was beautiful. of course, there would be.

”’n ain’t i lucky.” he grinned, chin nodding towards her. ”it’s those two eyes on yer pretty face what i’m talkin’ ‘bout, doll.”

drinks were set down in a bit of a hurry, and their floury-aproned server was off again.

the way she looked at him was appetizing. she nudged, spurring him on, pushing for more. so, he gripped flesh with the hand at her backside, taking firm hold with an unspoken promise to deliver.

but he wanted to hear it.

”no?”

only to tease, he lowered towards the ground, breathing warm over lace. his teeth found a thigh, but then he raised again, and curled down towards her ear, breathing at her neck.

”why don’t you tell me how you want it, then?”

”sure, sure,” he grinned, gaze passing briefly over other tables and booths, faces—a quick, casual scan before his easy-going smirk settled back on her again.

it lingered there for a long moment in silence, slowly curling a little more by the passing second.

”you got some eyes on you.” he chuckled finally. ”you know that though, don’tcha?”

boomer looked up at danny from his mother’s skull, greeting, ’bone.’ betty, however, had fallen quiet since her initial squawk, still waiting for them at the cave’s entrance.

“yeuh—well, kinda.” roach nodded as they walked. ”i like to come out ‘ere ‘n find me lil shit sometimes.” he reached into his pocket and pulled a cigar pick made of ivory and inlaid with a massive ruby. ”shit like this.”

he pocketed it again and shrugged. ”hobbies aside, though, i ain’t ever excavated nothin’ fer them, no. this’a be a first.”

jessie had an appetite, not unlike most drunk people. roach chuckled as well, but to be fair, they were good enough to gorge on.

he chuckled. ”atta girl.”

once everyone was done making unnecessary comments on what jessie wanted to eat, the server left.

”sure, why not.” he leaned back in his seat, taking up space with a lazy grin. ”long as you promise’a gimme my food back once you decide you want mine instead.”

”m,” he grunted. ”i’m glad.”

moving on, roach listened, cutting eyes a little and beginning to put things together. caprice was being vague, suspicious as he looked around.

he liked it when people could put it all out on the table. it made things easier.

”yeah?” he reached out to take the beer he’d been poured again. ”and why’s that?”

though some patrons hung around smoking cigars in far corners, out of earshot, they were virtually alone in their bubble. it was safe to speak, more or less.

roach smirked, knowing that the quality of his company was most certainly a matter of opinion. while he was well-liked around the lower district, he had a reputation for being something of an unsavory character—much more-so, lately.

”that’s sweet of ya, jessie.”

he grinned crookedly at her defensiveness.

”yeah, yeah. it’s called a kind gesture. ain’t my fault ye can’t hold yer liquor.” he shook his head, teasing her still.

Once she’d decided on something, he encouraged, ”getcha one, then.”

When the server approached and greeted them, roach began, ”yes ma’am, can I get a cheeseburger with bacon, jalapeno, pepperjack, gravy and a runny egg, please, and a water with lemon.”

’mhm.’ the older woman, donning an unkempt bun and a floury apron and labeled ‘noreen’ turned then, pen at the ready to tiredly jot down whatever it was that jessie wanted.

he enjoyed her affections along his jawline, allowing her to take over for a moment, and chuckling at the way her hands fumbled. when restrictions were undone, however, control was his again.

he straightened and took a step back, taking hold and raising legs to trace fingers up the backs of thighs and hook thumbs behind knees. he discarded her shoes, and then, drawing close again and taking her up in one arm, he pulled down pants with the other. they, too, fell to the floor.

cradling her back from between her legs, his touch brushed light along the soft skin at the edge of her shirt, and then crept further down.

his lips passed over her windpipe, feeling the buzzing vibrations of her soft sounds through his kiss. his hands continued to knead a moment, and he growled again hungrily.

”yes, ma’am.”

he pushed against her, and soon, his hand was reaching for the button under her navel, or whatever he might find there. either way, the pants were evidently his first goal.
