he can't even begin to understand why kyle might have thought he was a nerd when everything about him screams jock and frat boy. perhaps it's his obsessions over things that makes him most nerdy, but even then, his obessions are in the realm of unrequited romance, not battling theory.

"what the hell is a robe of fire rats?"

laughing, he pulls out a literal robe with patterns of fire rats stitched on it and hands it to kyle.

"turns out there's a small market online for this online. people really will capitalize on anything, huh?"

the floodgates have yet to open and maybe they never will but honesty and truth comes a little easier now. he wonders, briefly, as he's met with a sly wink, whether eddie has anything to do with that ease.

the last bit of critique he delivers is for her sake. teaching her how would be good for the purposes of training, but the true intentions of why they're here today is to provide her the tools to do what she intends to. it would be a mistake to dull them before they're even sharpened.

before he knows it, he's swung over her shoulder like a sack of hot shit and is slammed into the ground, knocking the wind out of him even though the impact is expected.

he's not allowed much time to groan or cough before she's leaning over him, imaginary knife pressed to his throat. his grin persists.

"aye, but look down my dear."

a small EARTH SPIKE protrudes out the ground, aimed directly for her gut. the tip of it is rounded, however, eliminating the accidental risk altogether.

"you would've joined me in death."

his heart lurches, his stomach flips, and his breath is knocked out of him as he goes over her shoulder and comes crashing into the ground. dirt scatters from the impact. the lowly cloud parts from his cough and chuckle as he peers up at her.

"not bad. but could be better."

without waiting for a hand he knows would never come, he stands, grunting back up to his feet before assuming the same position. dirt smears against her.

he grins.

"come on, cadet. again."

though it would be incredibly easy for him to walk down the path of self-pity, regret, and guilt, he knows would not be what kyle would have wanted. his chance at another life is not a curse but a blessing; one he intends to see through.

"i feel exhausted, mostly, but yeah, headaches and chest pains."

not so much shock, he thinks, and more so to do with his altered bond with groudon. takes time to adjust, he thinks.

for forgiveness to be given there would first be the need to assign fault and blame. she may have facilitated and enabled your demise at mount chimney but none of that would have happened if not for you.

so, the fault lies with you, not her.

illeana reyes and palkia is a recipe for disaster especially when the cracks in her psyche were there long before their pact was made. that can only end one way, and he suspects it'll be with him on one side of the battelfield fighting to protect the people, and her on the other side fighting for whatever palkia wants.

Eva Morales and rayquaza share their similarities to matias and groudon. he might not remember much of the incident atop mount chimney but he remembers the cruelty and unforgivingness of which rayquaza dealt with the situation. it seems to be the opposite of what eva believes in, or at least did at one point in time.

matias returns to answer josh's question.

dumb is understating it but it's said for the sake of not diverting this conversation toward the docks of burnt bridges that lay as a result of his pride and arrogance. he's glad this one isn't on its way to being burnt.

after a soft chuckle, he tilts his gaze back at his friend.

there's an ease to the way he teases eddie. it feels familiar and comfortable in a way he can't quite describe.

they are late to explore ultra crater, though they can't be blamed as they'd been occupied with the other rifts, so most of the discoveries here aren't theirs to make. like the kartana recording, for example.

"ha! that's cool."

he grins like a school boy.

matias wasn't schooled at all; the army doesn't count as that's more of a boot camp that's never stationary, always moving from one place toa nother; so he isn't able to relate to the golden era.

"teenage us would have gotten along with each other, i think. or maybe not. nerd and jock vibes."

though not physically impossible, he understands the impracticality behind it and how jarring it must be to be told to flip someone twice their size. but in the field of the battle, she might not have the opportunity to pick her enemies, and so she must be prepared for all possibilities.

"i've seen girls and short kings do that to guys my size. so, yeah, you're supposed to do that to me."

getting up, he offers her his hand before pulling her close, his body pressing against hers like dancers engaged in a beautiful melody except the only rhythm to follow is the pulsing adrenaline.

"grab me here," he moves her hand to the back of his neck, "and here," and her other hand to his wrist, "you won't need much momentum. feel me, then use my weight against me."

he looks down at her warmly, focused.

"push," he shows a bit of resistance against her, "then duck a bit and pull."

the comparison would be to imagine tossing a sack of shit over her shoulder, but he doesn't want to voice that, worried she may judge him again for talking about shit.

"try it. but let go of my wrist after i'm over your shoulder. you'd dislocate my shoulder otherwise."

their size difference skews this training session much in his favor. he merely budges when she attempts to bowl him over; she would have better luck if she tried tickling him. he simply stares down at her as he braces against the pressure.

"i mean this in the nicest way possible. what are you trying to do? flip me?"

the way she has both arms wrapped around him that seem to be both pushing and pulling at the same time is evident of that. still, he finds it hard to believe.

"you're doing it wrong. here. watch."

without warning, he reaches an arm and grabs her by her body before using the momentum to toss her over his shoulder and down onto the ground. he follows through to keep her safe, knee hitting the dirt beside her.

peering down at her, he grins.

"see?"
