"oh, don't sully our baking with that nonsense." dahlia beckons lucas in, passing over his belated entrance and the solemnity of her healing. her clothing is casual, loose, and white. like the curtains billowing nearby. "i've made sure to purchase some cookie cutters that should be to your liking."

her voice is peppy and light. it possesses a gentle incandescence, like a scented candle refusing to blow out due to its withering wick. from the drawers, she pulls out the metal stencils, flashing several of them toward the scientist: an omanyte, kabuto, a lileep. eventually, an entire set of fossil-mon cutters is spread across the counter as a calculated spectrum of possibility.

nearby, her stoutland snores on a woven rug.

"have you ever baked before, lucas?" dahlia places the flour, salt and baking powder into a deep metal bowl. "making pastries is a science. perhaps you have the knack for it." she sets the bowl closer to him.

"mix these, please! chop! chop!"

dahlia keeps to herself. in ever grande city, her gated property remains forcibly quiet. bodyguards prevent paparazzi and reporters from trespassing her line of comfort; after all, she was still recovering. her bruised body is nothing compared to the restless mind that gnaws at her sleep like a steadily corroding poison.

yet, she stays strong. she has to. and she does not do this out of obligation or for a penciled in agenda. instead, conversely, dahlia is inspired. the toxin of her suffering empowers her. a modern day mithridates, minus the paranoia. but she has good reason to be paranoid now.

and it is for this reason she invites lucas lane to her abode. the kitchen is prepared, the ingredients all neatly organized atop a quartz tabletop. sunlight filters in through the delicate white curtains of her kitchen's french windows and a slight breeze carries the day further inside.

the bodyguards would let the scientist in without much of a fuss.

"come in!" she calls for him from inside. "i've been waiting!"

her stoutland is the best therapy. in tune with the tide of her thoughts, the large billowing dog dots the beach with its paw pad prints before settling behind her. she leans back. spine to warm fur, dahlia nestles in like a child.

the stoutland quietly slips into a shallow slumber in their shared space. dahlia sheds her troubled thoughts- much like the raw-skinned dratini traveling through the sands. its skin is soft and unmarred. the previous scales lay discarded by the surf before the ocean claims them, perhaps for some creature to gobble up like gristle.

dahlia extends her hand, shifts to the side. the dratini wants warmth. something soft. a different sensation than one offered by the wide sea. exhausted by its molt, the dratini falls to a slumber, wrapped in the thick plumage of a stoutland and in the company of a future human friend.

dahlia watches a crustle heave its burden across the beach. it leaves trails in the sand: no footprints. the weight of its layered home is an ancient one, revealing in its strata the wrinkles of stress and work that render it slow. as she witnesses the crustle's plight, her smile begins to falter. her pleasant countenance shifts into one of solemn contemplation. self-reflection on the seashore.

she stops to scratch her own back. her fingers scrape against her delicate spine, and she wonders for a moment whether she drags her feet.

she enjoys how the sand tickled her toes. no grit, no sharp shell shard was a nuisance.

here, at the edge of the continent is liberation. liberation from the office. liberation from the paperwork and papercuts that slip underneath her nails.

even in a world of fantastic beasts, the doldrums of work life never ceased to beat their one-note drum. instead, she enjoys the subtle melodies present within every retreat of the surf.

dahlia's lungs swell with the sea— but her breath cuts short as a pokémon disturbs the calm.

the revelation of the werewolf in the council's circle unfolds rapidly in her mental space, yet she refuses to let the gravitas orbit outward. dahlia remains steadfast. and like a celestial body, she dances outside of silas' atmosphere. away from his taunts.

"the problem is," dahlia sings, "the more your gang spreads out, the weaker your control becomes." she lifts her chin up, steadying herself.

his threat comes like a dire wolf's howl.

but she remains strong.

"they'll come because they want to. not because they're forced to." the commissioner sighs, her breath pulled like a tuft of cloud from her soul. "i'll forgive myself— only if it happens."

and as silas unravels the dark swathe of his pity, dahlia basks in the shadow of his gaze like an old friend.

"i guess... i can say the same to you." she wants to cry. she wants to mourn him. but she can't when he's still here. still here in front of her.

dahlia laughs. the water on his shoes is tinged with pink. she tongues a loose crown.

"one city, and you think the league's in ruins?" she shakes her head, tussled hair falling neatly against her cheek. "it's good to see that i'm not the only greenhorn in leadership."

she moves to pull a gold curl of hair behind her ear, but the arms meet the cold resistance of rope.

"and you're right." dahlia leans back in her chair, settling comfortably.

her shoulders relax, neck loose as she reclines as if she were in spa.

"they will." dahlia would cross her legs if she could. "it's funny how you think i wouldn't listen to a warning. i'm happy. happy to be here, silas."

with a delicate frown, her gaze settles on silas like a canopy of pity.

"still, i forgive you."

spinning round like a carousel of shadows, the memories flicker through intervals of black as silas ticks through each detail. dahlia secretly takes pleasure in this. he remembers so much— so much more than her. but she still remembers the beartic.

she had it in her room. after slateport's laceration, she's not sure if it's there anymore.

"i wasn't lying." dahlia sighs wistfully, her breath running freely against the locked circuit of memory. "it was cute."

the jacket feels heavy. dahlia leans forward, ropes clawing into her arms and wrists as she takes a drink like a suspended trapeze artist.

"mm, you did." dahlia says delicately, as if balancing her syllables. "i'll warn you too."

she spits the water on his shoes.

"don't patronize me, silas."

fright trickles up her limbs like vines of winter frost. they shackle her. a paralysis induced by nightmare, her awoken gaze abandons control into the deep pools of spiritomb's looming visage.

a voice snaps her out of her sleepy deluge. and the icy vines are replaced by ropes. she doesn't resist—but the cordage digs into her skin and rubs it red. as her vision acclimates to her new surroundings, dahlia steadies her breath.

she's in the belly of the beast. right where she wants to be.

"actually, i don't." dahlia says. the grisly sight is utterly foreign, rendered unknown by a man's selfish hubris. "if you miss it so much, you could visit it yourself, silas." her gaze mourns the memory of the market, and disparages the calamity: a spoink doll eviscerated on the ground, the sewn pearl now severed.

"after all, that market is now your creation."
