But he was willing to go now, apparently. She blinked, face still glowing, but touched by surprise. A moment was taken to idly gaze on him collecting his belongings.

“I didn’t mean now, but…” Her smile was a bit meek, as though she felt she might’ve been asking for too much. “It does sound fun.”

Ellie’s face sank as the ACID was thrown onto the Whimsicott’s coat. “Oh—” Her hand began to reach out uselessly, as though it might help from a distance. Poor baby. This Toxel was on a rampage, really.

Then, MOONBLAST widened her eyes. She followed the hole it made in the sand, shocked. Popplio dove back into the water, but still remained close.

In the end, the Whimsicott seemed fine. It perched on Sam’s shoulder, and Ellie eyed it, not so sure of its innocence.

She gave a nervous chuckle. “Looks that way.”

Eyes looked back out, disappointedly finding the Popplio had created some distance again.

“I think we scared it, maybe.”

Popplio’s BABY DOLL EYES drew Eliora in—not that it was needed. They sat from a distance, looking at each other. Eliora listened but didn’t look; captivated, and only turning back in time to see the Mantine disappear into its new ball.

Eyes eventually looked up at Sam again from the sand and tide. “You’re going… digital?”

The Popplio’s snout wound up in the bottom of her palm unexpectedly, and she jumped—which scared it back a bit. “Oh—I’m sorry.” She reached out again, and gave a giggle when it blubbered towards her a step, forgiving.

A Whimsicott floated in on the breeze, and landed on the top of Sam’s hair. It announced itself shrilly, ’Whimsi!’

Ellie beamed. “Aw. It likes you!”

Eliora’s home was tiny, but it boasted a small veranda and an attached greenhouse in the back, which made it appear larger than it was from the outside. It was cozy, and covered in vines and coastal flowers.

“They are.” She smiled proudly, even though he couldn’t see all of that from where they were standing.

His invitation wasn’t expected, but she didn’t have to think much about it. “Okay!” And the excitement in her tone might’ve made it clear that she was being genuine. She’d take him up on it.

“Let’s go, then.”

They rose to the surface, and once there, Ellie removed the gear from her face and looked out over the water. Nothing along the horizon. Gyarados was gone again.

She treaded water, looking for Theo to appear beside her, and not moving from her spot. She wouldn't leave him behind, and didn't mind waiting.

Ellie gave a light giggle at the idea, and of the enthusiastic lick the Toxel offered its trainer.

“How sweet. I can believe it. Strong, and a cutie.” Cutie! Cutiefly echoed the sentiment from a small distance, seeming to have forgotten previous transgressions in the happiness of its newfound flower friend.

Sam Carter…

“From Mt. Pyre, right?” Yes. It had to be him. Surely, not one else had such markings. “My name’s Ellie. It’s really nice to meet you.”

It was then that the Popplio behind her made itself known from the water.

“Oh! Look.”

Ellie could recall many a Primarina in the contest circuit. They were beautiful creatures, and the young Popplio like this one had always seemed so loveable. Still one with nature, she approached with a hand out, getting lower and eventually sitting in the sand at the water’s edge.

“Hi Popplio.”

Ellie hadn’t ventured much into the mountainous areas of Hoenn. That sounded interesting. She wondered what sort of things they got up to with their missions there, when not on the rare excursion to help baby Tirtouga—and drown birds.

“I haven’t been in the mountains much. I’m sure it’s beautiful, though.”

Milotic watched Albert from over her shoulder, having lowered back into the veil of water teasing the shoreline.

“Mhm! I live here.”

She pointed down the beach towards a cluster of very modest houses, surrounded some greenery and flowers. A small community garden, maybe, but difficult to tell from a distance.

Ellie was glad to hear the bee fly would at least be medically tended to. She nodded vaguely, as though compromising rather than approving. She had a Cutiefly, and they were especially loved.

“Well, that’s alright, I guess.” She said, of the battling. If the pokemon were enjoying themselves, at least there was that. It was a sport, and there were rules and regulations to keep things safe; this was what she’d been told over and over. Still, it was hard for her to watch.

It was then that a Clefairy wandered past. Ellie’s attention was especially drawn, because of her Clefable. It was quiet, and seemed lonely. Maybe if she could convince the Clefairy to come with them, Clefable wouldn’t seem so sad all the time. They could stare the moon together.

“A Clefairy.” She pointed out. “I have a Clefable. I wonder if they’d get along.”

Reaching a pokeball, she released said fairy. Immediately, its attention was captivated. ’Clefable…’

It wandered over to befriend the other.

The nod tickled Ellie with a brighter smile and a matching giggle—though maybe not exactly.

“Oh. Well, that’s okay Henry.”

Her efforts been helpful, and she wasn’t in trouble. This was all good news. The curl of her lips remained, eyes beaming at him, utterly happy with such an outcome. There had been times she’d attempted to steer clear of the rangers in such efforts.

Ranger Darren.

“Ellie.”

Eyes sparkled a moment and she then looked over towards his clothes, and along a bit of sand.

“Do you work on the beach often?”

Cutiefly drew some of the nectar from the flower offered to it. ’Cutie!’

When it seemed that Ellie had made friends of the three of them, she reached for a couple of pokeballs in a bag strung over her shoulder, and held them up. “Would you two like to come along with me?”

They drew nearer with curiosity at the capsules, and she tried it out, pressing buttons and taking the two fairy-types within red beams. There was a barely a shake of either, and they were caught.

She immediately released both again, and they made happy noises and swirled around each other on the breeze. Milotic cooed to them; a ‘welcome’ of sorts, maybe.

“No need for apologies!” Her smile went down to the Toxel and she squatted close to the sand to get a better look at it—maybe a brave move, but Ellie was a brave woman. “You’ll get there, huh?”

Ellie slid off the Milotic’s back, eyes lingering on the Politoed with another smile. It didn’t seem to ever fade too much—at least, not until she was about to be eaten by a giant angry sea dragon.

The Raichu, previously forgotten, reappeared atop the ranger’s head and sparked. Ellie took a step back, unsure.

“Um—yeah! Of course.” A hand went to briefly hold her opposite elbow, somewhat coy and paired with a meek grin. “Thanks for letting me. I don’t know if I’m actually supposed to do this or not.”

“Maybe… just so close to the beach.” She shared his thoughts. And, also, again, it was odd for anything to attack Ellie, what with such typically good luck and a sweet heart.

When they came to the shoreline, she pointed at his clothes in the sand. “Your jacket.” She responded rather simply. She didn’t know, but it was a pretty solid clue, and it stuck out brightly against the earth—serving its purpose.
