Rarely--really, every, rarely, did Sam bring out one of the most annoying things in his arsenal.

The festival surrounding them was far too social a setting for the introvert, so he'd taken himself and the baby out for a while to the beach. There were plenty of places to walk along the beach. Whether or not he even bothered with the pokémon on the route was still up in the air.

Mostly, he wanted to give himself some space from all the noise and his toxel was in such high spirits from the battles that she wanted to play around in the sand.

So he stood on the shore, seated on a blanket, with no shirt and a pair of shorts on. His sunglasses were moved up onto his forehead as he watched the toxel play, a nice overcast having come in. Nothing daunting, just a bit of shade on the otherwise h✩t summer day.

On the outskirts of the festival, they enjoyed the quieter side of the beach, traveling further and further along the line where the waves reached the edges of their feet. A Slowbro waddled along at her side, and Staryu left a track in the ground as it rolled. It soon disappeared behind them, lapped up by the water.

A flowing, somewhat sheer cover blew around her in the breeze like a pale pink flower. Eyes stayed ahead of them, looking, searching…

The color of his towel caught her eye and she looked over, giving a smile and a lazy wave in passing, which Slowbro mimicked only… slower.

“Hello!”

They didn’t stop, but they also weren’t exactly going anywhere quickly to begin with.

"Hm?"

The chipper greeting had Sam arching an eyebrow and looking back, verbally startled into making a curious noise. When his eyes landed on the woman and her slowbro, he gave a small wave.

"Afternoon."

Or was it morning? He wasn't sure, he'd left behind his watch that morning.

The sound of static caught his ear, causing him to turn and look at his toxel. Apparently a sobble had bobbed by, poor thing, and the toxel had gotten territorial. Sam got up and dusted off his buns while making his way over.

"You can't just go attacking wild pokémon without--"

Sharp yellow eyes landed on the seemingly unconscious sobble and the very proud expression of his toxel. Was this a gift to him?

Those same eyes narrowed in suspicion at his toxel, brows furrowed. Felt like a trap.

But the sobble had been playing dead. Once Sam approached the two, the sobble suddenly doused Sam in a heap of water, an attempt to soak him.

An attempt that worked. The two cackling pokémon had Sam's eyebrow twitching with annoyance. It was officially a good thing he'd left the watch at home.

Seeing Sam was clearly rattled like the toxel had been planning, she excitedly gave her new friend a nuzzle. The shock to the sobble caused his body to tense and he let out a cry, turning to immediately bind the toxel with his strange little limbs. In retaliation, the toxel let out a belch right in the sobble's face.

The 'clearly annoyed' Sam threw a pokéball at the nearly unconscious sobble.

"Well he's spunky."

Toxel cackled victoriously.

Water tickled the edges of her feet in its back-and-forth rhythm, and she watched the line where the edge of the region breathed—until a shadow danced across it, and stole her attention.

A Cutiefly circled around her head, maybe drawn to the color of it. She looked up and spun, and found the bug in the air right in front of her face. “Oh—hi.”

It hovered, and she raised a finger towards it, in awe.

“You’re so fluffy.”

But it flitted away, heading back in the direction of the Sobble on the ground. Maybe they were friends. They had shown up together, after all.

Now more drawn to the fairy bug than anything on the ground, she turned after it to find the scene of the fallen pokemon. Suddenly, there was worry that the Cutiefly might also suffer the same fate.

“Hey, wait! Come back!”

When it didn’t immediately, she followed, although tentative. Slowbro trailed at the rear, waddling.

“Please don’t hurt it.” Her concern was called out to the strangers. If it didn’t want to stick around, she hoped it would make a safe escape.

After the sobble was captured, a cutiefly came into sight. Sam moved between the cutiefly and the sobble, brows furrowed, with a scolding finger being held up that waved the toxel off from attacking the cutiefly.

"Now, you stop it."

Annoyed, the toxel turned away from the cutiefly and Sam to instead focus on the water and shore.

With a relieved sigh, he turned to look at the woman with an apologetic smile.

"Forgive the toxel, she's in her rebellious stage."

Said toxel was busy gnawing on a palpitoad's bubble of a forehead, which got her a spit of toxic ooze. Being that she was poison herself, it held no effect. Only had the toxel licking her lips eagerly and squishing harder. As the ooze came out, the toxel consumed it.

The palpitoad, clearly annoyed, rose from the sand and used a mixture of sand and water to send muddy water washing over the toxel. She rolled and rolled, then her head popped up out of the sand and water mixture and she made a queasy expression before she let out a rather large belch.

Hearing that belch, Sam turned and saw the palpitoad looking just as sick. With a sigh, he tossed out another pokéball - with the intent to get it treated at a pokémon center - and narrowed his eyes at his toxel, contemplating sending her back to her pokéball.

"And if she doesn't start behaving, then I'm putting her back in her pokéball for rest of the day."

Toxel promptly lifted a hand to pull down one of her eyelids and then stuck her tongue out at Sam, who's eyebrow twitched in annoyance.

"Did River Marx teach that to you while I wasn't looking?"

The stranger spread arms, and the Cutiefly was steered away as the Toxel was held back. Ellie sighed lightly with some relief, and the bug flitted off on the breeze a few meters away.

She smiled back at the man and his pokemon, immediately forgiving. “Oh, sure.”

Her eyes didn’t miss the oozing and strange head-bubble snacking, but she just didn’t mention it. It was only when the Toxel let out its loud belch that Ellie’s eyes widened a bit and gave a clue to her attention. It seemed to finally catch its trainer’s, as well.

“Uh-oh.” She giggled. “She’s just a baby having fun.”

The Toxel stuck out its tongue. There was something about a River… and then a beautiful flower floated by and caught her attention. A Floette.

Its AROMATHERAPY drew the Cutiefly closer, until they were circling on the breeze. The bee fly got too close, maybe, though, and the sparkling energy of a FAIRY WIND began to pick up around them.

Ellie stepped in. “Hey, it’s alright. He’s not trying to hurt you!”

The wind slowed a bit, glitter fading. The Cutiefly lingered closer to Ellie.

“See? It’s okay.”

The Floette lingered, hesitant. Then, when all its defensiveness had passed, it held out its flower to the bee fly.

The way this woman handled pokémon, even wild ones, felt ... different.

While at first he'd just thought that she was apathetic, and while that might have been true, he was now wondering if she was one of those nature types. Or aura types. The people that could feel auras of pokémon and somehow read them. Like lucarios, but people.

It had been a thing, so he had read. Though it was mostly chalked up to myth these days.

"I'm relieved. I apologize for my toxel's behavior. She's still... maturing."

Truth was Sam at times just crossed his fingers and hoped that the thing would evolve anytime they got along. It seemed toxel's evolution was dependent mostly upon trainer relationship, as with all 'baby' categorized pokémon.

What an evolutionary curse, that was, in Sam's opinion. He much preferred either regular evolution through experience gained, or none at all. Single stage pokémon was a favorite of his. And there were as many dual type single stage pokémon as there were single type.

Cutiefly drew some of the nectar from the flower offered to it. ’Cutie!’

When it seemed that Ellie had made friends of the three of them, she reached for a couple of pokeballs in a bag strung over her shoulder, and held them up. “Would you two like to come along with me?”

They drew nearer with curiosity at the capsules, and she tried it out, pressing buttons and taking the two fairy-types within red beams. There was a barely a shake of either, and they were caught.

She immediately released both again, and they made happy noises and swirled around each other on the breeze. Milotic cooed to them; a ‘welcome’ of sorts, maybe.

“No need for apologies!” Her smile went down to the Toxel and she squatted close to the sand to get a better look at it—maybe a brave move, but Ellie was a brave woman. “You’ll get there, huh?”

For once, Sam and toxel did the exact same thing. They watched as this woman just, caught the pokémon with her pure heart.

At least that's how toxel would explain it if toxel could talk.

Sam more realistically knew that pokémon who were befriended were much more easily persuaded into being captured. Pokéballs were capsules, not contraptions that forced a pokémon into them. Gain the pokémon's respect, or break the pokémon's will, and captures went smoothly.

Which was a whole different topic altogether, and Sam was reminded of that when he felt his toxel waddling between his legs. He glanced down at her with his brows arched as the woman addressed his toxel.

"She'll be very strong. Even as she is, she's a formidable asset. And her personality often makes children laugh. Her and my gastly could be a comedy show."

There's no disdain, no embarrassment, and the toxel repays him with ... a lick, just like gastly would. Sam's eyebrow twitched with mild annoyance, though no other part of him showed the annoyance. 'That'd be gastly or River Marx's influence again, no doubt...'

Turning his attention back to the woman, he finally offers an introduction.

"I'm Sam Carter."

Ellie gave a light giggle at the idea, and of the enthusiastic lick the Toxel offered its trainer.

“How sweet. I can believe it. Strong, and a cutie.” Cutie! Cutiefly echoed the sentiment from a small distance, seeming to have forgotten previous transgressions in the happiness of its newfound flower friend.

Sam Carter…

“From Mt. Pyre, right?” Yes. It had to be him. Surely, not one else had such markings. “My name’s Ellie. It’s really nice to meet you.”

It was then that the Popplio behind her made itself known from the water.

“Oh! Look.”

Ellie could recall many a Primarina in the contest circuit. They were beautiful creatures, and the young Popplio like this one had always seemed so loveable. Still one with nature, she approached with a hand out, getting lower and eventually sitting in the sand at the water’s edge.

“Hi Popplio.”
