once upon a time, she’d loved him. still did, in a way. she could feel his tension, see the shifts, hear the frustration in his breath. none of it changed a thing.

at the commanding tone of his voice, she looked over coolly. being the ex-lieutenant that she was, she had a bark as clear as him. she didn’t use it, but the look in her eye would make it clear that his did nothing to startle her into submission.

”a waste of my life?”

she rolled her head lightly on her shoulder and held it higher. if the sauna didn’t open up soon, she’d likely be out the door in minutes. this had taken a wrong turn.

”don’t worry about burying me. i won’t be defeated.”

she knew she herself was to blame for her daughter’s lack of social skills. no school, and they didn’t go to the local playgrounds, typically. there was great fear of being found by the wrong person. it was too obvious a place for them to be. this, and sagira had scarcely made any friends herself since moving to hoenn, and none with children. unlike liore, delta was quiet as she was pushed in the swing. sagira watched on. the surprise she felt was not enough to pierce through the tired look on her face. the other girl, about delta’s age, was loud and seemed to be obviously enjoying herself. delta, however, was always a mystery. she looked up at his voice. the other little girl’s parent. he looked a bit like a greaser, out of an old unovan movie. he smelled like cigarettes, but so did a lot of people. [break][break]

he hesitated. was he lying? she smiled wider. ”it’s okay if you are.”

she wasn’t quite feeling it yet, but maybe it was creeping. maybe it was a difference in metabolism. who knew?

”nah, not yet.” but her smile pinched even higher before she hid it behind the mouth of the beer bottle, downing the last of it. maybe she was feeling that a little. a warmth in her chest.

she set the bottle down and sat further back in her chair. the sun was nearly down now. dark began to settle in. after a long moment of quiet, she asked, ”is there more beer?”

she set a sifter over the bowl and pulled a bag of flour closer, reached for a measuring scoop, and poured in two and a half cups of flour. at his complaint, she smiled.

”must be.” as she measured the last cup, she added, ”we haven’t exactly treated ourselves well, either.” and life had not been peaceful, which had its own effects on the body through the power of the mind.

”grab another bowl, and measure out one and a half cups of brown sugar.”

in her own bowl, she dropped a couple of teaspoons of baking powder.

she might have been made aware of parts of the truth, but she had not been told the degree of his involvement in the massacre. it was not lost on her that MATIAS SILPH was being vague, but as far as she knew, king had set the fire himself—and that was plenty reason for all of this.[break][break]

a blaziken came out to flank them, and she glared, seeing her disadvantage and jumping back onto zarude’s back to dodge out of the way of his advance. the decidueye above was pulling another arrow. SPIRIT SHACKLE went this time for the blaziken. [break][break]

torterra seemed to also know the threat. a purple, ghostly energy sought to enshroud the blaziken with a CURSE. it leaves began to wilt some as it did so. meanwhile, sagira tossed another pokeball in her wake. a claydol, whose ROCK TOMB summoned the earth to split, pulling many large stones up into the air and towards those approaching. [break][break]

sagira felt a twist in her chest she wasn’t expecting, but she grit her teeth through it.

she nearly felt sick at his advice, perhaps because she knew it in her heart, but she maintained what she was doing was merely duty. it was surely nothing short of what they expected of her in the afterlife.

there was offense painted on her face, even if it was only a light wash. with an eventual sigh, she looked around again.

”this vengeance is not for me.” which made it much more important. when it came down to it, she’d been the one to wrong king, well before it all had happened—but the loss of so many lives vastly overwhelmed her guilt.

she was about to answer his question and explain her not-so-captive when the sound of footsteps and rustling grass behind her caught her attention. her head snapped to the side to catch a glimpse of the person running off, having made their way down a good measure of the hill in impressive time. the red beam of a pokemon being released glowed.

”shit, that’s him.”

darting around the side of the temple, she reappeared on the back of her zarude, its paws thumping on the ground at top speed on the way past. would derek give chase too? it wasn’t her order to give.

she felt the first muscle in her face soften, and reached for a pokéball, her glare sharpening all over again. he didn’t deserve an explanation, only the same mortal fate he’d given others.[break][break]

all of the sudden, they were attacking. a brilliant green ENERGY BALL exploded from between the monkey’s sharp teeth as it roared, heading in a beeline for king. a massive torterra was appearing to their side, and her bird was not far off either. airborne, fifer maneuvered above in a graceful FEATHER DANCE, his plumes billowing in the wind.

it was fated to be. she’d expected to find king somewhere in the city, where she’d have to hold back. she’d been actively hunting him, since that day at the aquarium. mt. pyre was a place she went often when she needed a rest from her stresses. it was the last place she’d guess, but there he was.[break][break]

she’d seen, and followed from a distance at pace. having caught up, she wasted no time behind cover. she’d dreamed of facing him again. there would be no hesitation. [break][break]

zarude stepped out from behind the rocky obstruction of earth that had concealed their approach, and she slid off its back. a few steps towards them, and she stopped, dust kicked up around her boots. [break][break]

eyes found him again, and there was a tearful sheen to them.

”they were soldiers from my unit. i was ready to die for them before.”

she looked away, biting her lip lightly before her stare hung again. she shook it away.

”he’s in rocket now. i’ll fight tooth and nail until i see with my own eyes that he’s fallen with them. nothing can keep me from that.”

sage had always been good at suppressing feelings, even more so after she had become a soldier. in that moment, however, there was unmistakable forlornness lingering in a face that scarcely knew how to crack.
