It wasn’t a matter of magic, but a matter of Ceri making a stop before heading over to meet up with him, because if Rocket was going to make her stay out late wandering through the cold hallways of the submarine, she sure as hell was bringing some coffee.

There’s a lot about all this that might make it seem as more than just a mere prank, starting by how carefully the stacks are arranged and flattened. It’s too perfect, but then again, something like that could easily be done with the help of the right pokémon, even if it would take time. But, why in the world would anyone bother with that?

If there’s thoughts of aliens, they’re discarded as quickly as they come. Ceri’s life has always been ordinary, and today is not the day that will suddenly change… right?

Well aware that he’s probably looking at her, she turns to meet his gaze, a slight smile tugging at her lips playfully.

One last good look at him and she returns her attention to taking pictures of the crop circle, snapping a few more before stepping closer to Niko and offering his phone back. This time, she smirks.

He’s right, it is exciting, and even if his words may not have been meant to be particularly reassuring, they do reassure her indeed. She even smiles, and her own gaze drifts towards the drooling Slowking.

A Snorlax could eat a whole Muk and the pokémon that’s usually considered to be a living biohazard would do nothing to it.

Now being much calmer, Ceri checks her notes; scribbles regarding Slowking anatomy being side-by-side with potential instructions to create the serum. It should almost be done.

Gavin’s question distracts her, however, for a pang of nostalgia comes at the mention of her hometown. This time, she looks at him, azure eyes meeting amber ones.

”Oh… Yes! I grew up there, moved here when I was a teen.” She smiles, thoughts of the snowy streets of Circhester filling her mind. ”I’m surprised you knew it’s from Circhester specifically, most people can’t tell beyond it being Galarian.”

Truth be told, Ceri isn’t really a trainer, nor does she care for pokémon battles. She’s too busy with her own life for all of that; with school, with her research, with her jobs, with the things that are important. So much so that she doesn’t even know she’s actually talking to a member of the Elite Four…

On cue with her words, her pokémon is released onto the ring, and while Ceri herself is small and petite and harmless-looking, the Rillaboom stands at almost seven feet. As big as the Snorlax or perhaps even bigger, and it sure doesn’t look friendly.

And yet, Ceri looks at it like it's the cutest thing in the world, clapping her hands together with a smile.

”Good luck, Duir. Have fun!”

And just like that, a DRUM BEATING comes for the Snorlax, starting the fight.

Wearing sneakers as she is, she stands at no more than 5’5”, and looking up at him with keen azure eyes, she waves and gives him a bright smile.

How the hell had things turned out like this?

Ceri has always been a confident person, and when it comes to Toxicology, that confidence may be somewhat justified by the way she has always excelled academically. Her GPA is to be envied, and yet, she knows well enough that she has a lot left to learn, and being no more than a lab assistant, never in a million years would she have imagined she’d be working on an experiment alone with no less than one of Team Rocket’s underbosses.

She has never been particularly anxious, but it’s a nerve-wracking situation even for her.

It could be a great opportunity, or it could mean disaster.

It all depends on her.
[break][break]
”Ah… It’s difficult to say, since we’re basically trying to replicate a natural mutation, no?” While she speaks, she prepares the serum in question, it’s main component being a concentration of Galarica – sap, leaf extract, anything that would be found in a twig. ”Kantonian Slowpoke and Slowking haven’t gone through generations of eating mainly of Galarica twigs, so while the serum should cause a chemical reaction with the Shellder’s saliva in theory... in practice we just don’t know if it will be enough. It’s like trying to find the balance between poisoning them enough to cause the reaction, but not enough for it to be lethal.”

Once this is said, she pauses, and while it’s faint, rosy hues colour her cheeks, for she hopes she’s not sounding too preachy or too unsure of her own hypothesis – even if she could excitedly rant for hours about such things.

”Sorry if I talk too much, it’s a bad habit.” With a chuckle and a quiet sigh, she returns her attention to the serum, never daring to look at the underboss.

Kano has a point, but with their surroundings obscured by sudden nightfall, it’s difficult to see if there’s anything watching them. Are they being followed? What’s causing all this? A few possible pokémon come to mind, the most obvious choices being her first pick, but speculation won’t do much good, and the strange sound that suddenly hits her eardrums makes it clear that there’s no time for such things.

There are some pokémon out there that have very dangerous singing moves. If only she had brought noise-cancelling headphones with her, huh? Although, let’s be honest, it’s not like Ceri can afford fancy noise-cancelling headphones that actually do their job properly.

In truth, Ceri doesn’t have the optimism nor the energy to match Priam’s, but the way she grins with such brightness and cheer could have probably fooled anyone.

”I’ve never had unfezant on pizza, is it good?” Tilting her head ever so slightly, Ceri looks at the boxes, wondering why is it that rich people always have to put the weirdest ingredients in things and make them bougie. What happened to plain ol’ moomoo cheese?

She means the crackling fire of the furnace nearby, the one that has been making the lab feel strangely warm as of late. It’s not an unwelcome feeling at all, but she had grown used to the cold of the submarine.

It seems as if everyone has the same question, doesn’t it? Which really should come as no surprise, since isn’t it what any sane person would ask themselves when a huge tree suddenly grows out of nowhere? How and why.

”I bet there’s people who have a million and one theories.” She chuckles, but looking at her new companion, her head tilts slightly. ”What’s yours?”

It’s her own curiosity that leads her to ask, and for a moment, she watches as the other woman befriends a Ribombee… until she’s distracted by the sight of a nearby Exeggutor launching an EGG BOMB towards them.

”Oh! Watch out.”

Ceri is quick to act, reaching for a Great Ball while the exploding egg is still in midair. From it, a Salazzle appears, managing to somehow slap the egg with the blunt force of a FIRE LASH from its tail and send it right back towards their attacker – now on fire as well.

With a calm smile, Ceri throws an empty ball. Mostly so it stops bothering her, honestly.

When he’s not looking, she rolls her eyes, wishing for a moment that she had at least been sent with someone a bit more helpful on this mission. At least he’s smart enough to call out his Corviknight to get a bird’s eye-view of the field, which admittedly is at least a half-decent idea.

She tries to, getting on the very tip of her toes, but given that corn stalks apparently usually around eight foot tall and Ceri doesn’t pass 5’6”, it’s a wasted effort.

She sighs in defeat, yet it’s a chuckle that follows this as she keeps on walking, continuing with their hunt for answers or signs or whatever it is that they're hunting for right now.
