The tree that had appeared in Sootopolis is old news by now. As mysterious as it is ominous, it looms above the ravaged city; life sprouting amidst chaos and decay.[break][break]

Optimists might view it as a blessing. A symbol that no matter what, life and beauty perseveres. Certainly Luka views it as such, for she too has grown a garden out of all her wounds. She cultivates them and cares for them dearly; daisies and hyacinth, vivid red roses stuffed in the cracks of a crystalline heart.[break][break]

Now that some of the figurative smoke around Sootopolis has cleared, Luka has ventured into the city to see it for herself. Warned of the danger beforehand, she's brought along her strongest team members and dressed down to avoid detection. Not that it matters much; she's hardly a public figure, indescribable enough to get by without much scrutiny when not dressed up like usual.[break][break]

Up close, the great tree is a fantastic sight to behold. It may not be safe to do so, but Luka can't help but press her hand against the bark and close her eyes, wondering what secrets might be whispered beneath thick bark. But the tree is silent.[break][break]

There are no hopeful symbolisms attached to the tree of life in Ceri’s eyes, but her interest in it still cannot be denied.

Life does not sprout from nothing, after all. Spontaneous Generation had been disproven long ago, and so there must be something that caused it to grow. Something living, even if miniscule. Something that was probably linked to all the strange events that took place when Team Rocket took over Sootopolis.

But, what exactly?

Even in Autumn, even when small piles of leaves begin to form beneath all surrounding greenery, life refuses to fade from this tree. Ceri always finds it to be a nice sight when she has time to stop by, and this time it still is, even if she seems to have some unexpected company for this particular visit...

Luka startles at the sudden voice behind her, but recovers quickly enough. Wide eyes soften with a welcoming kindness, lips curving into a pleasant smile. She waves back.[break][break]

"It really is," she agrees readily. "And mysterious too, don't you think?" Her hand lingers on the bark, fingers idly tracing the fissures naturally etched into the wood.[break][break]

"It just really makes you wonder, y'know? How it grew here...not that it's any of my business." Luka shrugs and finally takes a step back from the tree. She's not the kind of brilliant mind that'll solve the mystery behind this strange phenomenon, that's for sure. Instead she's happy to enjoy it at face value, soaking in the life it both radiates and attracts.[break][break]

The buzzing of insect wings reaches her ears, as does the skittering sounds of various Pokémon traversing the branches of this vast tree. Luka reaches into her bag and produces a berry pouch. She offers one up to a Ribombee hovering nearby, who happily takes the treat and settles into her open palm to enjoy it. The Disney princess vibes intensify.[break][break]

It seems as if everyone has the same question, doesn’t it? Which really should come as no surprise, since isn’t it what any sane person would ask themselves when a huge tree suddenly grows out of nowhere? How and why.

”I bet there’s people who have a million and one theories.” She chuckles, but looking at her new companion, her head tilts slightly. ”What’s yours?”
[break][break]
It’s her own curiosity that leads her to ask, and for a moment, she watches as the other woman befriends a Ribombee… until she’s distracted by the sight of a nearby Exeggutor launching an EGG BOMB towards them.
[break][break]
”Oh! Watch out.”
[break][break]
Ceri is quick to act, reaching for a Great Ball while the exploding egg is still in midair. From it, a Salazzle appears, managing to somehow slap the egg with the blunt force of a FIRE LASH from its tail and send it right back towards their attacker – now on fire as well.

Bye bye, Exeggutor.

With a calm smile, Ceri throws an empty ball. Mostly so it stops bothering her, honestly.

"My theory? Hmm..."[break][break]

Luka ponders this while the other woman battles an aggressive Exeggutor, her own capture still sitting docilely on her palm. When Ribombee finishes the berry she flies off to settle on her new trainer's head, wings resembling a ribbon nestled upon soft bubblegum curls. [break][break]

"I think that life, um...finds a way?" Luka shrugs and smiles apologetically. "I'm not very, erm...scienc-y, I'm afraid. If I had to guess...I'd probably say it seems like magic?"[break][break]

She laughs again, softly, and well aware of how childish she sounds. It's a fanciful theory, but one that suits her just fine: alluring secrets and dangerous discoveries waiting somewhere amongst the beautiful, mysterious forest. And magic, surely; like something out of a fairytale.[break][break]

"What do you think?" she asks, peering over at her new companion. The dappled light from overhead casts a greenish light upon her features. It's a hue that might look sickly on some, but there's no marring the other woman's lovely face. "If you don't mind me asking."

Oh, she’s cute.

And sweet. And lovely. Even if Ceri can’t help a small laugh at the mention of magic. It’s a gentle sound, and it lasts for no more than a few seconds.

”Magic, huh? I like that! Though, isn’t magic just people’s words for science they can’t really explain or understand?” Beaming, she meets the other’s gaze, only to then head over to offer a twig full of green leaves to a Tropius that lands nearby.
[break][break]
”I think it reacted with something here. That something brought it to existence.” Her words come with a small shrug, and a hand is tentatively extended to pet the grass type that happily feasts on the leaves.
[break][break]
Vegetarian plants. What a thought.
[break][break]
Maybe if she befriends the Tropius and catches it, she could ride it like a horse. Flying horse? Grass pegasus?

"Mmm...that's a good point! I like the way you think," Luka says with a giggle of her own. She appreciates the indulgence in her whimsy, a mundane kindness that warms her heart all the same.[break][break]

She watches the Tropius as well, and the gentle nature of their interaction softens the smile upon her lips. But soon she turns to her own quiet contemplation, once again studying the tree before them. Thinking hard about stuff like this isn't her strong suit, but something said to her still lingers at the back of her mind.[break][break]

"Something that...was brought here. Oh. Oh! Oh oh oh!" Luka bounces on the balls of her feet for a moment, her eyes wide and excited as she turns to her companion. "Oh! I have an idea!"[break][break]

She releases her Poipole in a shower of purple stars from her Love Ball. It's a long shot, but maybe a Pokémon from another world will be more familiar with a strange tree like this.[break][break] As is customary, Poipole squirts out a little poison goo before zipping around the tree with a child-like curiosity. Some of it drips onto a Shiinotic that totters nearby, and though untentional it's still super effective. Luka feels bad enough for the living mushroom that she captures it.[break][break]

"What do you think, Jam?" she calls up to the UB. "Does this seem...familiar at all?"

Grass type pokémon will always have a special place in Ceri’s heart, mostly because many of them bring reminders of days spent tending to gardens and taking care of flowers by her mother’s side. But, the small flower shop they once had is long gone now, and the Tree of Life is much different from the garden her mother once loved so much…

It’s with that thought that a pokéball is gently pressed against the forehead of the Tropius once it finishes feasting on a few leaves, the wild pokémon disappearing in a flash of light.

’Oh! I have an idea!’
[break][break]
Luka’s words come as a distraction then, and honestly she’s thankful for that.
[break][break]
”An idea?” As if this were ‘show and tell’, the answer is released from a pokéball, the young woman’s russet eyes widening at the sight of the creature she had only ever seen in reports before. In her gaze glisten wonder and awe. ”Is that a Poipole?”

Amazing.
[break][break]
While Ceri is preoccupied with watching the Ultra Beast, her Salazzle entertains herself by chasing after a Budew around the tree in what is apparently a very fun game to them.

"Mhm! They're pretty cute, right?" Jam chimes their agreement and zip around the tree, prodding and poking at some of the branches. There's an innocent curiosity to their actions, but no sense of grand realization. It seems that the UB has no better insight to this tree than either of them.[break][break]

"They broke into my apartment once," Luka explains as she watches them. She's quick to tamp down on any assumption that she's some brilliant beast-tamer. "I fed them and...they just never really left." She laughs, shrugs, and follows their tiny purple form with her eyes as they fly up, up, and around the giant tree.[break][break]

It's a dizzying series of twirls and loop-de-loops, and Luka's almost dizzy watching them. Eventually Poipole flies back down to their level, chittering excitedly. Luka has no idea what they're trying to say, of course, but nods along and smiles encouragingly.[break][break]

The UB squeals and flies back up again, contemplating the tree for another moment longer before they reel back and slam head first into it, driving a needle-tip full of poison straight into the trunk. Luka only realizes what's going on after it's too late.[break][break]

"Jam!" she shouts anyways, "Stop that!"

AS SOON AS LUKA'S POIPOLE STABS THE TREE, they must be cautious. Should another Rocket witness the desecration of their tree, surely, the consequences will be dire.

Nevertheless, once the needle engorges itself with poison, the tree bark seems to darken slightly— but nothing violent or dramatic occurs. A clear watery liquid drips from the point of injection. It is not blue sap. However, the poison seems to have been taken by the tree. Perhaps, this substance is poison that has been purified. Diluted.

One can not be too sure.

As soon as the Poipole was out of its pokéball, Ceri’s gaze remained fixed on it, watching its every action as it went around and around the tree. It was confusing, dizzying, and she definitely didn’t expect it to just go ahead and stab the Tree of Life…

Russet eyes widen the moment it does.

”Jam! Stop that!”
[break][break]
”Wait…”
[break][break]
Is she talking to the Ultra Beast, or to the other woman? That much is unclear even to Ceri herself, for her gaze remains fixed on the spot the creature stabbed even after it floats away. Something drips, and she acts fast.

”Oh!”

Reaching into her bag, Ceri retrieves one of sample tubes she usually carries with her for exactly this sort of situation (well, not like she could have ever predicted she’d run into an Ultra Beast stabbing the Tree of Life, but when approaching the latter there’s always the possibility of needing to take a sample or two, right?).

She runs towards the tree, only to then carefully collect as much of the liquid as she can.

”What is that? Amazing… I’ve never seen it do this before…”

There’s awe in her voice as she looks at the samples.

"Jam!" Luka shouts again, forcing more authority into her voice. It sounds unnatural, like trying to pull on an ill-fitting sweater. "Get down here!"[break][break]

Poipole emits a high pitched whine and circles around the tree again, poking the spot they'd just stabbed. They seem curious, opening their mouth to taste—[break][break]

But Ceri swoops in with her vial first. Jam whines and pokes at her, but eventually blows a raspberry and flies off to join Luka, who's glaring at them as best she can. It's not at all intimidating.[break][break]

"I can't believe you," she scolds, while Jam pouts and crosses their stubby arms. Luka huffs and pinches their cheek with one hand, stretching it out while they squirm in protest. "You're lucky the tree seems to be fine. Thank goodness! Imagine what could have happened...you need to be more careful!"[break][break]

She grabs the alien and cradles them like a baby, and though they whine again it seems they enjoy the attention. Luka finally breathes in and floats towards Ceri, glancing curiously at the vial and the clear liquid that seeps from the tree.[break][break]

"I'm so sorry," she starts, "Jam can be, um, kind of hard to keep in check sometimes. I hope they didn't do any serious damage. This tree though...i-it's pretty weird, huh? Y-you have no idea what that is?" In this department, Luka is next to useless. She has absolutely no knowledge of poisons or antidotes or anything of the sort.
