The dreadful, despair-riddled moaning that preceded the coalescation of a gaseous face off to one side was, in a word, awful. Athanasios needed little more than a cursory glance to discern the identity of the disharmony's originator, given the telltale swirling purple and bright, sickly green that formed the pokemon's visage; A Spiritomb. Not a terrible asset, he supposed, but it wasn't really him.[break][break]
"Hmm. No, I think not. Anastasia, if you would be so kind as to shoo away our guest." The smooth, rich timbre of his voice did not raise above a conversational cadence as he walked, paying little attention to the ominious glow that surrounded his Gardevoir, before a brief detonation preceded the wailing retreat of the wild pokemon. It was fortunate that it was so commonplace for adventurous types to be well versed in pokemon battles, Athanasios reflected, as yet another round of conflict broke out beneath the earth. Were this a normal mining tour, composed of civilians without combat-capable partners, there would be rather a lot more blood and death by now, rather than minor injuries and major inconveniences over which to complain.[break][break]
Allowing themselves to be driven deeper and deeper into what was, presumably, unknown and unexplored territory was less than wise, but such risk did tend to come with the potential for rich rewards - The rarely trodden path is the one that has yet to be picked clean, after all. Given the rate at which the party were collecting resources as they went, however, it would not be terribly long for this route was left with but the slimmest of pickings, in turn. Best to make the most of it while one could, then.[break][break]
Ignoring the Excadrill's short-lived battle, and sparing the cosmic pokemon little more than a curious glance, Athanasios turned once more to excavation attempts. Leave it to the others to tend to the wild pokemon, for the time being. Humming a low, unhurried tune deep in his throat, the white-haired noble hefted his pickaxe before swinging it at a particularly promising patch of faintly glinting rock, in tight, controlled bursts of force that were aided by Anastasia's psychic force - A little extra momentum and precision went a long way.[break][break]

"You are what you eat..." Athanasios muses in a slow, thoughtful manner, looking down at his cottony friend in a speculative manner. "How many Wooloos did it take to become one with their fluffiness? Is this why you have a farm, to have an endless supply of hapless, cloudy victims to devour?" Tapping his finger just beneath his left eye, he winks conspirationally, as if privy to a dark and terrible secret, though the nascent smirk that curls the corner of his mouth belies any effort at a somber mien. "All that cottony goodness hides a black and devilish heart, I see." Dropping his hand and the psuedo-menacing air abrutply, he smiles, the spread of his lips as smooth and natural as the breaking of dawn. "Of course! It is known across the lands that your farm is the very best."[break][break]
The wildly incorrect interpretation of events that has results in one of the worst chest infections he had ever suffered elicited no response - He was not about to dignify such blatant rewriting of factual events with a spoken response, though his silvery-blue gaze slid to meet Anastasia's out of the corner of his eyes; She had been a Kirlia then, and judging from the subtle shading towards displeasure that her features displayed, and the mental image she transmitted of them both miserable and sick before a roaring fire, she was not best pleased either. [break][break]
A short-lived scoff sounded from the noble's throat, who flipped his left hand aside in a dismissive gesture. "I may be the only person you know that admits to it openly, my dear, but I assure you that there is no shortage of those who are intrigued by such." The list of mundane, if somewhat perplexing mysteries that Georgette provided earned her a dryly amused look, his lips twisting into a wry half-smile. "I have seen Gogoats scale near sheer cliffs, I imagine a house provides little in the way of obstacle to them. Regardless, enigmatic those phenomenon may be, but I would not precisely classify them as occult."[break][break]
Swaying languidly aside at the affectionate nudge from the smaller woman, Athanasios continues without missing a step, using the tip of his trash picker to flick a can into the air, which he promptly skewers mid-air, before neatly tucking it away in the refuse sack. He listens with that particular form of intent that communicates the fullness of his attention, paying the farmgirl's words as much focus and gravity as he might a business transaction worth millions. At length, he nods, an easy bob of his finely sculpted chin, and says, "Anonymity does have its particular appeal. If you wish for assistance in finding somewhere permanent to stay, you need only say so." His lips press together in an alabaster line, his gaze going distant for a time before he says, "That is a laudable ambition. Breeding for temperament is not easy, but you will have little difficulty with such, given your experience and the rapport you have with pokemon. Have you secured sufficient seed stock to begin your venture, or are you searching for suitable candidates after you have an established base of operations?"[break][break]

As the mining expedition erupted into several varieties of pandaemonium, Athanasios paid it little mind - The luxury of having absolute trust in the abilities of one's partner is that one need not be distracted by such trifles as hordes of wild pokemon, and it was a luxury that Lord Valentine was well accustomed to. [break][break]
As the luminescent wall of solid light coalesced into being between them and the oncoming Steelix, courtesy of Anastasia's Reflect, he flicked the remaining rubble and fragmentory debris from the glimmering chunk of mineral that his efforts had revealed. Prising the gemstone from the wall by leveraging it via his pick, he brushed the remaining flecks of dirt from the gleaming surface and studied his find, ignoring the thunderous detonation of the closest Steelix ramming head first into the Reflect. An evolution item, if he was not mistaken, but not one that he himself had any particular interest in. Still, he mused as his Gardevoir, hands clasped demurely against her abdomen, began to glow with a pink light, a promising start..[break][break]
Anastasia's composed, graceful exterior shifted not so much a single flicker as she reached out with Psychicto grasp the Steelix in the grip of her telekinetic power, dragging it towards a stalagmite that jutted up at an angle. Without preamble, or so much as blinking, she began to ram the side of its face into the spear-like protrusion in short, brutal repetition, aiming to stab out the unfortunate pokemon's eye in the process - Until Athanasios murmured, "Play nice, dear. Let us relocate and take stock of the situation."[break][break]
At once, she released her victim, and reached out to place her hand upon her trainer's extended one, whereupon they flickered out of existence via Teleport and reappeared in one of the less chaotic sections of the cavern. Absently securing his stone within one of the satchels attached to his belt, the white haired noble calmly allowed his silvery gaze to roam across the bedlam - Two hordes, not one. Capturing one of the Gible would be excellent, but perhaps not well received by those valiantly struggling to restore order. Not, he noticed, that it was all that much of a struggle; The assorted trainers seemed to have matters very well in hand. No need for he and Anastasia to exert themselves - Best to save their strength for when it might be needed. Who was to say what they might encounter down here?[break][break]
Once the cacophony of conflict simmered down sufficiently, the aristocrat clapped his hands together sharply and called out in a voice that cut through what noise remained, saying, "If any of you or your pokemon require healing, Anastasia here can use Healing Pulse. Alert me should anyone require treatment, as I have medical supplies as well."[break][break]

It was perhaps passed time, in Athanasios's estimation, that he expanded his roster. As fantastic as Anastasia and Charlemagne were, they came far short of covering all type scenarios by themselves, and they were but two, when many trainers had full teams of six. He had discussed it with them both, insomuch as one could, and they had seemed amenable, trusting in his judgement in order to not bring any unwelcome presences into their family. And so here he and Anastasia were, spending their evening on a leisurely trek through the countryside, on the way to Meteor Falls.

He made absolutely no effort to conceal his presence, allowing his booted feet to impact upon the hard-packed earth with as much noise as was natural - Any pokemon that fled from them was a coward, or overly cautious, and he had no use for either currently. He needed fighters, with the will and the courage to defend their territory from all intruders. Anastasia, for her part, drifted along in his wake, pausing now and then to inspect a particularly eye-catching flower, or to examine a rock or other curiosity that might be of use. Both walked with the quiet confidence of those certain of their own strength, and the dignity inherent to the aristocracy. [break][break]

Athanasios was not an early riser by natural inclination, more given to nocturnal hours, and their subsequent later mornings, but he had long since trained himself to rise at a more opportune time - The early Pidgey the Weedle, as the old saying went. As such, he was up when it was still well and truly dark, had gone off to wash himself in a nearby stream, and made a breakfast of lightly grilled vegetables and meats for himself and Anastasia. After a meal spent in companionable silence, they had both donned the gear that they had brought with them - Harnesses, bespoke safety helmets for himself and the Gardevoir, gloves, safety boots with spiked soles, and so on. The equipment had served them well in the past, in more trying environs and situations, so he had little doubt that it would hold up excellently for today’s endeavour. [break][break]

Listening to the explanation with the polite, amiable air of one that is well versed in the subject matter, Lord Valentine then proceeded to courteously refuse the offered supplies, indicating his own, and made his way over to the crevasse. After spending a few moments ensuring that both he and his pokemon’s harnesses and such were safe and secure, they made their way down into the cave smoothly and efficiently. [break][break]

Ignoring the more obvious pickings, Athanasios stepped over to the wall of the cavern, and began tapping upon it with the hammer side of his excavation tool, listening intently to the subtle differentiation in sounds until he detecting a note that appears to satisfy him. Flipping the tool around, he set about driving the sharpened steel pick into the rock with measured, calm pragmatism, trusting Anastasia to ferry the debris aside with her psychic abilities. Settling himself down atop a mossy rock, Athanasios crossed one leg over the other and folded his hands atop his knee, the very image of dignified grace. While not the most comfortable of seats, the moss at least provided some degree of cushion, and he had settled for worse, in the past. [break][break]

Allowing his electric blue gaze to track the path of the aerodactyl as he spoke, the Kalosian replied, in a conversational, casual tone, “Oh, is that so? An unusual enough quality. I do wonder that no unscrupulous types have set up some method of producing it en masse, given the rarity.” [break][break]

Anastasia drifted over to where he sat, lowering herself down into an elegant kneeling position to his right. Adjusting the crimson ribbon that was tied about her throat, she kept a calm vigilance on the encroaching predators as the humans spoke. In the manner of one speculating in an idle fashion, Valentine conjectured, “Do you suppose it has some effect on humans?”[break][break]

Save his money? Coming from almost anyone else, that statement would have come off as disingenuous. The finances from either House Valentine or Reign Industries alone would catapult him far, far up the rankings of the world’s richest individuals, and with both combined, well…[break][break]

“You are, as ever, Gigi, as sweet as the pastries you so love.” Considering the matter for a moment with pursed lips and a slight tilt of his fine jawline, he wonders, “Do you think the ingredients would make a great deal of difference in the end result? I imagine the quality of the dairy and eggs would have an impact.” [break][break]

Turning from his perusal of the beach to inspect the mysterious shell once more, Athanasios taps the knuckle of his foremost finger against his chin, his mien thoughtful. “You think so? I am sure we could find a marine biologist to make certain of the matter. It is an exquisite shade of blue, whatever form it took in life.” [break][break]

A brief, brilliantly boyish grin flashes to life upon the man’s face, the roguish expression gone as quick as lightning. “Ah! But a Slateport native would look upon the beach and say, ‘Home in Slateport is just sand, sand, sand!’” The smooth, alabaster expanse of his brow creases with shadow as he frowns, tilting his head down to look upon an offending length of seaweed that has dared to tangle itself with his toes. Shaking it off in a dismissive manner, he follows along in an amiable fashion, allowing himself to be pulled by his enthusiastic friend. [break][break]

There was something to be said for delegation, and trustworthy subordinates. Athanasios had little doubt that the majority of CEOs and other, similar individuals of wealth and influence would have a difficult time finding a slot in their schedule to indulge in some charity work. Pleasantly, however, the time and effort he had invested in acquiring and training personnel of exceptional quality was paying dividends, as he often had the luxury of free time, should he desire it. A particular fan of Ledian or Ledyba he was not - He found little enough that was especially appealing about the creatures, but nor was he repulsed by them.
