He picked himself up stiffly off the ground, touching his face. Bruised, but not broken. God, his poor nose.

Strugging to stand, he tracked the vague shape of a hand reaching out to help him. Still a bit dazed, he figured it was Alex, come back to check on him. “Thanks,” he said, realizing too late that the grip was ice cold and strange.

He was already up on his feet before he opened his eyes and saw the Cofagrigus. “Gah!”

Shivani popped out in a burst of light, downing the sarcophagus with a sucker punch. It made a loud bang as it fell on its back in the dirt.

“Thanks, baby girl,” Memo said, exchanging a smile with his cursed doll as he zapped the Cofagrigus with a Pokeball.

“Let’s go find the gang.”

Memo stood from his chair and moved to stand behind Alex, more for his own benefit than his boyfriend’s. He was a simple creature and proximity and warmth made him happy, so sue him.

“You cut all the way through,” he said, tracing the Sharpie line with one finger. “But maybe just do a narrow cut so we see the outline of the Wooloo? You don’t have to punch the whole thing out, I mean.”

Into the pan went the chorizo, onions, garlic, diced tomato. He inhaled, exhaled. "God, it's so nice to not have to go to mass."

A styrofoam cup of ice water with a lid and straw was produced. Memo dutifully brought it back to Alex’s bedside.

“I can’t wait to get you out of here,” he agreed, positioning the straw so Alex could drink without having to move much. “I think the other patients are starting to get nervous about the avian judgment day lurking outside the windows.”

He smiled, soft in the half light.

“I love you.”

He felt like he didn’t say it enough even though he said it all the time.

He doesn’t know what Alex is talking about, not out of ignorance but out of the sheer plethora of horrible things which had occurred. It could be any instance, any point on the timeline, and it would’ve been something horrible.

“I’m sorry,” he gasps, wrapping his arms around Alex like he could hold him there forever, terrified he was going to leave, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

What awaited him on the other side was… well. It was about what he expected, and somehow, not nearly as bad as he expected.

Kaida Adachi with her head bandaged; Julia Davis, limping; SACHA ROSIER and kids, thankfully unharmed.

“Hey, gang,” he said, in the same moment Will baaa’d his own greeting, “c’mon in.” He moved to take the heavy jug of cider from the injured Julia and step aside to welcome in the flow of people.

His stomach somehow curled itself into a guilt-shaped fist, smile faltering. Once again, he’d come through a major lifechanging event physically unchanged, like the coward he was.

He fixed his grin, quick-like, and winked at SACHA ROSIER. “I hope you’re ready for some sugared-ups kids because Alex went absolutely Lechonk-wild.”

"I didn’t know either, but it’s a welcome surprise.” He checked his soup briefly before wiping his hands on his VENO, VEDI, VINO apron. “Alex, this is Annalise Henderson. She singlehandedly got me through the Ranger conclave without murdering someone.”

"Aw, you shouldn’t have. Thank you. And thank him, too.” He only vaguely knew of Greyson Connors as a gym leader, but apparently he was a cook, too?

She seemed a little nervous to broach her next question. Memo looked at Alex, then back to Anna, shrugging.

"All things considered, I think we’re doing okay? Some of the other Rangers are on Rift duty today so I can catch my breath.” He fiddled with the stove knob. “Aside from having a giant universal hole in the middle of our city I think we’re okay.”

Alex was right in saying that Memo’s #2 love was clothes. Maybe his #3, too; because, listen. You grow up poor and closeted and then you finally get to come out of the closet and then maybe it just looks scary and empty so you fill it up, right?

Right.

“Yes, I have considered, Scrooge,” Memo shot back, doing his best to smile and look photogenic for every camera, “and I love it.” And yes, he had insisted that they match, because it was both beautiful and tacky and honestly Guillermo was loving every friggin’ minute of it.

They pressed through the doors and into the main swathe of people, where the current broke off and they began to disperse and scatter. Memo was fairly certain he was the only one who heard what Alex said but he fished an arm out of his humongous cloak and swatted him in the arm.

“God, it’s like you’re me, and I’m you,” he scolded, grinning. “What I’m wearing underneath took even longer to get into, so hands off, pal.”

A flourish announced the opening of the dance floor.

“Ooh, ooh, ooh-- do you wanna dance?” he was like a kid in a candy store, grabbing Alex’s hand and tugging him along behind.

Memo breezed through a decorated arch and paused, spinning back into his boyfriend-- Shivani had to work quickly to sweep his voluminous cloak behind him.

“Kiss under the mistletoe?” he asked, hopeful, pointing up at the plant hoisted over their heads.

[attr="class","samjermain"]When Memo first came to Hoenn he was determined to turn over a new leaf and recover some of the joy and vivacity that once had been his, long before his transient times. But these shreds of happiness were so far distant he was forgetting what they looked like.

The region had changed him, definitely, and not always for the better. One of the things it had done, though, was shifted his outlook on things-- so now he wasn’t so consumed on reaching back for the tails of things bygone, of old happiness. Now he was pivoted, rearranged, focused on making new happiness.

Case in point.

“It’s so heavy!” he said, grin as bright as the line of headlights behind him as his little entourage of Pokemon helped fluff out and shift the long train of his cloak behind him before ducking back into their respective Pokeballs. Only Shivani remained, peeking out from under the train where she was helping to shift it, smiling.

He was positively giddy, like a kid at christmas. “Ahhhhh, I love it. I love it I love it I love it.”

It was soft. It was warm. And it was so extra.

He did feel bad for the poor footman who would have to take his cloak at such time as he decided to shed it. Memo had prepared a large tip in advance.

“Ready, freddy?” he asked, reaching out to take Alex’s hands from within the massive expanse of his cloak.
