CJ likes their own coffee 90% sugar. They don’t miss when Orion makes the mistake of drinking his straight. It’s a pretty good imitation of what their face does when they have the misfortune of drinking the unsweetened bean juice. They don’t say anything, because Orion is already having a bad enough day without CJ making fun of their taste preferences, but affectionate smile curls on their lips, and they feel okay for a heartbeat.

“It doesn’t make it any easier,” CJ says, with passion. “You’re allowed to feel things.” CJ’s therapist, in school, used to say feeling leads to healing; of course, that was back when the college paid for their mental healthcare. It was nice. It was brief.

“I know you’ll be alright, you goof,” they admonish, a gentle good-humor sneaking into their voice. They want to kneel down next to Orion and hug him, like a child acting who is acting tough. “You’re too strong not to be. But you’re allowed to not be alright right now and for as long as it takes. And if you need anything, I’m here.”

The next floor is quieter, thankfully, though CJ’s ears are still ringing. They look at the offerings of held items, chewing on the inside of their cheek in thought, pointedly ignoring the very sugoi nature of the floor manager, or whatever the fuck these guys were called.

“I guess I will take these,” they say, selecting the pads. “Oh, hey, these are nice. Can I keep these? I wanna sew them as kneepads into my scrubs.”

CJ felt something snag in their throat and they took a sip of their coffee; the warmth soothed the ache, though, out of numbness, they didn’t really taste anything. “That’s good to hear, at least,” CJ said, voice cheering at the prospect of Cass’ health. They felt slightly guilty that their Pokemon, for the most part, came out unscathed. Well, Shae was beat to shit and well out of commission for a while, but she didn’t die. [break][break]

Which brought them to their next point…[break][break]

“I haven’t,” CJ said, regret a bitter boulder in their stomach. They wouldn’t know what to say if they did. Maybe if they’d acted faster, just told Fen to drop the mountain without waiting for permission, maybe things would have been different. Maybe Vic’s Dragonite might still be alive. Maybe Hailee wouldn’t have gotten hurt. Maybe… maybe…[break][break]

Maybe nothing would have changed, and they’d still be here walking around carrying a god-damned… guilt onion in their soul, just layers and layers of contrition buried in deep like a parasite that needed removal. [break][break]

“I’m worried about him, too,” CJ said, the but being left unsaid. But you, Orion, are more vulnerable than Vic; but you have also been through so much. Much to CJ’s dismay, the floors were getting trickier at a fast rate. They had Pokemon who could avoid drowsiness altogether-- but to take the yawn, get sleepy, and resist actually falling asleep was another question. [break][break]

After watching Elisabeth’s Florges fill the air with a lovely, pink mist, CJ had an idea; they sent out Stratos, their Loudred. It was about to get crazy up in here, up in here, to quote the eternal poet DMX. [break][break]

Once the yawn had landed, and Stratos’ eyes started to slip “Stratos, use uproar,” CJ said, and the Big Voice Pokemon began to stomp his feet and dance from side to side, filling the room with cacophonous noise-- like a horribly broken bass boosted speaker. It made CJ’s eardrums thrum deep inside their head. [break][break]

The next round flipped the script and instead of avoiding earthquakes, it looked like it called for an earthquake. And that was exactly what CJ provided, switching out Iman for Shae, their Mudsdale. Out of all the things they expected to be doing, staring down a weirdo in a Pokemon costume was not one of them. The Flygon was definitely the less scary of the two. He flips them a cool tidbit about the history of the… the Draconid people? [break][break]

CJ has little time to digest that, as the Flygon hopped into action shortly after. “Avoid the earthquake?” they thought aloud, giving Iman’s Pokeball a toss. The Eelektross popped forward and levitated off the ground, unfazed by the shaking and grumbling. “No problem.” [break][break]

They feel like they fucked up; Orion’s startled chuckle is the product of a cornered animal, not someone who is healing. CJ immediately feels guilty for spinning the story around and making it about them-- it isn’t. It’s about Orion. Orion at his core-- not his missing arm, not his dead Hydregion. [break][break]

It certainly isn’t about CJ and their buried guilt. [break][break]

They press their face into their palm and look out a nearby window. They’re a couple stories up, high in the canopy. A flock of Taillow go zooming by, chittering angrily at each other. Out of love. [break][break]

[attr="class","monbody"]A brilliant sun warmed Slateport’s streets, reflecting off the pristine shop windows and making the entirety of the upper district glow white and blue. Tourists in snazzy clothing and fun accents clogged the streets-- new arrivals to Hoenn were pretty easy to spot. CJ was busy flicking through their phone and not watching where they were going. They were looking for Pokemon, but not likely to find any on a clogged, busy street, so they ducked down a side path, barely wide enough for two people to walk down abreast.

They ended up having to dodge out of the way of some crazy old man on a scooter, but soon had the place all to themselves-- just a long, shadowed row of building sides, trash cans, empty stoops, and brick cobblestones beneath their feet.

Orion looks bad. Scars aside, he looks bad. Eyes downcast, face pale. CJ feels for him, they really do. They know what it’s like to be on the brink of losing the most important thing in their lives. Difference was, CJ’s fingers still twinge from where Jeannie’s life was ripped forcefully from their grasp. Orion is still a Ranger, debriding aside. [break][break]

They make eye-contact for half a heartbeat-- a dub and not a lub-- and CJ hopes for half a second that maybe what Orion says is true. Maybe he IS fine. [break][break]

CJ may be an idiot, but they’re not stupid. [break][break]

“You don’t look fine,” CJ says. It’s supposed to be accusatory but just comes out sad. They sit on a chair a scooch across from Orion, watching him carefully. “I’m sorry I yelled at you,” they say, voice full of meaning, “you just… scared me.” I thought I was going to lose you. They are not lost on the innate selfishness of the sensation. [break][break]

Sure, maybe CJ and Orion didn’t know each other all too well prior to the Mt. Pyre disaster. But CJ had been put in charge of keeping the team on their feet, at the very least, and at the maximum out of their graves. [break][break]

They had a bad track record of losing friends and an even worse history of terrible choices afterwards. It was a dark road they never wanted to go down again. [break][break]

Cefin cuts a striking figure shaded against the bright sun atop his Mantine. His hair is spun gold, his skin only slightly reddened from the beaming rays. CJ thinks maybe that was what made them and Cefin different-- obviously, the biologist had the forethought to bring a Pokemon with Surf. CJ just had their Golduck to tugboat them around. It felt odd to drop the honorific before Cefin’s name. CJ felt like their own experience paled in comparison-- a handful of biology classes under their belt vs. an actual, practiced lecturer. Nico’s smooth, webbed hand wrapped around their wrist and tugged them along, keeping a gentle pace with Cornflower. “I’ve taken a few classes,” CJ said, feeling a bit sheepish at the lack of dedication to their studies. “I’ve been helping the League Rangers out a lot recently. ‘S kept me busy.” [break][break]

They ducked their goggled head beneath the shimmering waves and beamed at all the little pink Corsola making their way along in the warm currents. Iman had made a wide loop and was coming back around for them. [break][break]

CJ squinted. The ocean behind their Eelektrik and the group of Corsola was beginning to darken-- as if something large was coming their way. Suddenly, they felt very exposed in the water, and Nico’s firm grip was more like a ball and chain dragging them downwards. [break][break]

Maybe this was why Jeannie was so afraid of it, they thought, a mixture of fear and guilt churning their stomach to nausea. [break][break]
