CJ thinks they are prepared and ready for their first real, important mission as a Ranger. They’re standing on the side of Mt. Pyre, back straight, shoulders strong, with a backpack chock full of First Aid and other requisitioned field tools. Kinnick sat at their side, dark eyes laser-focused as Victor Wexler briefed them all on what was about to happen. [break][break]

Standing next to Vic was Keldeo, and CJ kept thinking that, for a mythic Pokemon, the fourth Muskateer looked pretty nervous. That line of thought was making them nervous. During Vic’s report, they leaned over and whispered out of the corner of their mouth to Lux Defort , “This seems like that pretty cliche moment where the newbie thinks they’re ready and they definitely aren’t huh?” [break][break]

You know, as a joke. [break][break]

Then Vic calls on them to help the injured and they snap into a crisp salute, one hand gripping the backpack full of Vetspon, alcohol, and chromic gut. “Yes, sir!” [break][break]

A second later and all Hell seemed to break loose. The world began to rattle and shake, and CJ got a sick feeling in the pit of their stomach-- like being on a roller coaster, or a flying Pokemon. They realized it was the ground beneath them, heaving and cracking, and their knees knocked together, trying to keep balance. [break][break]

They reach for Kinnick and find their Jolteon has already leaped into action, rushing over to help a group of folk supplicants cowering nearby. This fills CJ with confidence, and they find their feet, PokeBall in hand. Before they can release it, however, the world splits open with light and heat and they hear someone nearby crying out in pain. [break][break]

They duck back as Orion Lykos ’s Hydreigon launches forward, meeting their foes in battle. CJ releases their Mudsdale, Shae, to join the fray. Entering the battle at a run, Shae launches forward with a superpower-backed charge. Hoping she can help the massive dragon-- and its Silvally compatriot-- turn the tide of the fight, CJ rushes to Lux, who… who has been struck by lightning? “What the heck?” CJ asks, taking a spot by Hailee Jacobs and swinging their pack around so it dangles from one strap in front of them. They take Lux’s wrist in one hand and feel their pulse-- the real danger from lightning strikes, besides the obvious burns, was damage to the heart. Lux’s pulse felt normal-- fast, but normal. [break][break]

“Gonna be a cool scar,” they say, cracking a smile, just as more screams tear the air. [break][break]

The battle still rages. [break][break]

CJ is sitting at the table, legs stretched out, fiddling with a hangnail when an absolute beast of a man appears across from him. In comparison, a rather dainty, cotton-fluff Pokemon scatters a card upon the tabletop. CJ’s eyes flit, back and forth, between the hulking human and the soft, slightly sparkling Pokemon, and did a great impersonation of that white guy blinking gif that was everywhere a few years ago.

“Hi, Elijah,” CJ finally said, finding they hadn’t, in fact, swallowed their tongue. “I’m CJ. I’m-- I’m a vet tech.”

They picked up the business card and examine it more closely. “Why flowers?” they ask, on a whim.

CJ accepted the bat smooch with a grin. “Okay, okay,” they laughed, patting the Woobat on their fuzzy noggin, “argument accepted. Very good smooch. 10/10.”

CJ didnt miss the change in Locke Jamison’s demeanor, but having their own skeletal closet, decided to ignore it. “Sounds good,” they said heartily, taking out their own (normal) cell phone and added Locke(heart emoji bat emoji) to their contacts. “Hit me up sometime, if you ever need help with your deliveries.” They gave Locke a final wink before the bell dinged, signaling the end of the date.

It was easy to get distracted with their toes in the sand, but CJ was determined to remained focused at the task at hand. All along the beach, markers had been set up at the location of Tirtouga nests, and very soon, under the low hanging evening moon, little baby Tirtouga would begin bursting through their shells and crawling through the sand to the sea, on their way to freedom. [break][break]

Standing by was their trusty Jolteon, Kinnick, with Agate, the Joltik, attached comfortably to her back. Together, the three of them stood guard over a long stretch of beach, hoping to helpand guide the little Tirtouga to the sea, whilst protecting them from the vicious and hungry birds which, already, were flocking overhead.
