The beach was warm and the sun was a joyous, golden beacon in the azure sky. The sound of Wingulls crying as they looped, playing on the rising thermals, was echoed by the gentle din of beachgoers enjoying the afternoon. CJ stood just beyond the tidal line, shirt off, one hand on their hip, other on a ratty old fishing pole, watching their Pokemon play dodge’em with the gentle waves lapping at the shore.

This was a rare moment for them. They had a… sacred, but complicated, relationship with bodies of water. Jeannie’d lived in fear of them, more strongly so after her diagnosis, and so they were best avoided. But CJ longed for the joy of the sun and the swell of the surf and so now, inhaling deeply of the thick, salt air, they felt both heavy sadness and a serenity in their bones, warm and buzzing.

They walked down a dock, making sure not to step on any fishermen’s lures. Out at the end of the dock, where the water was deepest, they could see the swarming Alomomola, shadows beneath the surface of the sea, but their tiered heart shapes were unmistakable.

“How so-fish-ticated,” CJ said, when Kinnick, Agate, and Yaz came up beside them. Kinnick made a noise like hocking up a hairball, and CJ laughed. “What? If you’ve got a betta pun, I'd love to hear it.” and the Jolteon full on yowled this time, swiping at their leg. CJ cackled and sat down on the dock, basking in the sun with their Pokemon, and dropped their line in the water, waiting for something to give it a tug.

Koro-koro reacted to their name by sticking their cutest nose into the air, squeaking in consternation, and rolling back over to sleep. “Mood,” CJ said with a smile. “Been a busy night for you? Suitors lined up ‘round the block?” Okay, now they were hitting their stride. Getting into their zone. Being annoying, but, like, on purpose. Very in character.

“What’s… what’s a kissogram?” CJ asked, a smidge reluctant to ask, because it felt like it was playing right into Locke Jamison’s advertisement. Not that they would mind a smooch from Locke.

Locke was right, though, Pokemon were a great icebreaker. “Yeah, I did,” CJ said, fishing Kinnick’s Pokeball out from beneath their sweater and releasing the Jolteon next to the table. She yawned, apparently having the same idea as Koro-koro, and stretched like a cat in sunlight.

“This is Kinnick,” CJ introduced, and the Jolteon yowled sleepily at her name.

CJ came to the table to find their second date cradling a snoozy Woobat in their lap. “Aww, how cute,” they said, not thinking, pulling out their chair and sitting. “I mean--,” their face flushed-- “the-- the bat. Not that you’re not cute, but.” Oh god, first Rhysand, now this. Could this night get any worse?

It could. Their partner-- Locke Jamison-- asked them the forbidden question. “Nah,” they said, unwrapping a heart shaped chocolate and choosing to lie instead of deny, “just my name.” They smiled, popping the chocolate into their mouth. “Who’s your friend?” they asked, pointing at the sleepy Woobat.

By now both of them are leaning in over the table like grandma’s at a heated game of bridge. “Colder,” CJ insists with a nod. “But beautiful, too. There’s new snow almost every night so nothing ever turns dingy and gray. It’s always pristine and bright. And the snow in the moonlight makes the nights glow." They’re waxing a bit poetic, getting a bit dreamy. [break][break]

They think for a moment on Rhysand’s question. “...both?” They eventually say, a little hesitant. “Like… a giant tree started growing out of Sootopolis and rumor has it the roots lead to another dimension.” They waggled their fingers for effect. “Things like that. On the other hand of the spectrum-- the normal end--” they held their hands out, palms up, mimicking a scale, “the weather’s been a bit weird. But I’m more interested in the magic tree sort of stuff.” [break][break]

CJ has a real name, but they Old Yeller’d it. The only people who know it now are a continent away-- or dead.
They’re an only child of divorced parents and shuttled back and forth between them for most of their youth. Both of their parents live in Snowpoint.
CJ was designated [REDACTED] at birth.
They are a licensed Pokemon vet tech (LVT).

WHAT THE LEAGUE KNOWS[break][break]

The Hoenn League spent a long time trying to recruit CJ, who turned down their many offers until just recently.
Scored high on aptitude and personality testing.

WHAT ROCKET KNOWS[break][break]

Completely off the radar. Hasn’t done anything of note yet.

PRIVATE[break][break]

CJ’s best childhood friend (and first love, though they wouldn’t admit it) was named Jeannie. They grew up together in Snowpoint. They had big dreams of traveling the world together and becoming Pokemon professors.
When they were 17, Jeannie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She began to steadily decline over the years, and CJ altered many of their life plans to continue to stay in Snowpoint and support her.
Not wanting to hit her lowest point, Jeannie committed suicide weeks before their 21st birthday. CJ fell into a deep depression for many years. During this time, they frequently abused alcohol and other substances.
The Hoenn League’s most recent recruitment attempt pulled them out of their stupor. They went to rehab, then cut ties with everyone back home and left for the Hoenn region, hoping to leave their past behind them.
CJ Definitely feels like they owe the League their life.

It was little Yazmin who discovered the Leavanny, as she almost jumped right into it. What she thought was a tall stalk of grass stood up straight in front of her, and the Pichu startled and fell back on her tail. A stray line of electricity zapped out and hit the Leavanny, burning a dark mark on one of it’s leafy leg pauldrons. Both Pokemon stared at each other for a moment, then jumped into action, Yazmin flailing around in shame and the Leavanny fanning out the small flume of smoke billowing off the burn mark.

“You okay over here?” CJ asked, approaching with Kinnick and Agate. Yazmin had begun to cry, and the Leavanny was making soothing noises and brushing the Pichu’s soft head with his leaves to try and calm her down.

CJ made a tsking noise and picked the baby Pokemon up, cradling her in their arms. The Leavanny sank, looking miserable. “It’s okay,” CJ said, “the only one who got hurt was you.” With a few bounces and some smooches, Yazmin was back to normal, and CJ’s three Electric-types bounded off into the grass again.

The Leavanny stood next to CJ and watched them run. Then, it tapped them gently with a leaf, and gestured to their Pokemon with an excited gesture.

“You… want to come with us?” CJ asked, venturing a guess. The Leavanny cried out and clapped it’s leaves together. CJ grinned. “Sure, that could be arranged.” They held out a Pokeball and the Leavanny placed a leaf overtop of it. A moment later and they swirled into the sphere as a beam of light; the clasp flashed red once, getting warm, then it fell still.

CJ gave the Pokeball a toss and the Leavanny burst back out with an excited cry, before heading off to pal around with CJ’s original Pokemon.

The stranger was nice, despite his slightly clueless, sand-filled grin. He certainly was very excited about the prospect of being out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere during inclement weather. CJ was about to ask what could be better than treasure when Hide Moriya swung back in the direction of the storm. The way he talked about the adaptation of the Sewaddle living in the storm made their heart twinge a bit. Jeannie was a freak for the evolutionary nature of Pokemon. [break][break]

CJ stood and watched the one-man show for a minute-- in a blink, Larvitar was in and Archen was out. They watched the little Rock Skin Pokemon toddle over and grab the diapered caterpillar, hoisting him over his head like Doodlebob in that one episode of Spongebob. After a few moments of victorious prancing, Hide knocked the bug with a Pokeball, and into its new home the Sewaddle went. [break][break]

“Nice catch,” CJ said, flashing Hide a thumbs up. “Those are pretty cute ‘mons you go--,” [break][break]

Just as Hide pointed out the presence of something behind them, CJ felt the ground begin to rumble and shake. They slipped a bit in the sand as it dipped beneath them, and they had to bear crawl forward to get out of the sloping dune. “Shit! Hey!” They threw a hand out towards Hide, hoping for help up, as the steel tip of the Excadrill’s folded form broke through the earth where they had been standing a moment before. [break][break]

Coming shakily to their feet, CJ threw out two Pokeballs in quick succession. Kinnick burst from one, and Agate from the other. The Joltik quickly came to attach to the Jolteon, who slid in the sand, kicking silt up and over the point of the Excadrill. “Kinnick, double kick! Agate, sucker punch!” [break][break]

Spinning on her front legs, Kinnick brought her rear end around, and delivered two powerful bucks to the Excadrill’s body, below the line of its metallic crown. The super-effective move knocked the mole backward and out of its drill form, arms flying wide, sliding on its back in the sand. As Kinnick lashed back around, Agate used the momentum from the spin to leap off her back. The little electro-tick clambered up the Excadrill’s chest, waved a leg in its face-- then slammed the mole’s head back into the sand with the other front limb, burying the Excadrill’s noggin in the sand. Job did, Agate quickly crawled back to Kinnick, latching comfortably between her shoulders. [break][break]

The two Electric-types returned to CJ, who threw a Pokeball at the Excadrill, who looked a bit worse for wear.[break][break]

“That was a close one,” CJ confessed, wiping a bit of sweat off their brow as the Pokeball wobbled in the sand.

The light sandstorm Hide Moriya was traipsing through had caught CJ, too, but it had been a lot bigger and a lot badder, at first, deeper in the desert. CJ’d been thankful for their goggles, pulled down to protect their eyes. It was a grueling task, trekking through the desert as the sand whipped and raged around them-- and a bit of a foolish one, too. [break][break]

CJ hadn’t been out looking for new Pokemon in ages… not since Jeannie’d been well. Oh, they went everywhere together. She’d had a knack for finding them, and raising them, since she was a Pokemon breeder, and all. Until she’d gotten sick. Until…[break][break]

At first, CJ thought Hide was a mirage, an illusion caused by the writhing sands and the heat. But as they got closer, they realized he was, well, real. [break][break]

The wind and silt had died down by then. CJ approached the stranger, running a hand through their hair, shaking loose the grit. [break][break]

“Treasure hunting?” they asked, smiling and brushing sand off their cheek. “Find anything good yet?” [break][break]
