Thankfully the trainer easily joined him without resistance. It would've sucked if he had to worry about two people getting lost in the woods. The guy seemed pretty good-natured and charismatic, perhaps a Sagittarius? Pretty good star sign compatibility, if so.

Aster's eyes light up at the mention of tracks and crouches down to better scrutinizes the ground around them. "Yeah, no luck so far. But if these are his tracks there's no sign of injury, which is great news. Hopefully he found a place to spend the night." He locates the clearest sign of a shoeprint. It's just the toe of the shoe but that's enough to discern a vague direction of where he's heading. He follows the course with his eyes. "Don't worry about getting lost with me here," he chuckles, "I'm a certified ranger, best there is." He finally looks up and winks.

"But seriously, let me teach you a thing or two real quick. The best way to stay orientated this deep in the forest is to leave markers," Aster gestures to red x's he sprayed on several trees just before running into him, "And if you do end up a bit lost and don't have a compass, the best thing to do is stay put. The whole thing about moss growing on a specific side of rocks or trees? Total myth. Follow a river downstream as a last resort if things are desperate." Just as the words leave his mouth he notices a branch broken in the direction following the line of the footprint. The soil starts to get look moist a few yards ahead.

"Speak of the devil... It looks like our friend might have been heading to a water source." Aster stands up, brushes himself off, and offers the trainer his hand. "I'm Aster. Nice to meet ya. By the way, do you happen to know your star sign?"

The thinly veiled threat of violence made the cautious and pleading smile drop from Aster's face. He paled considerably but half a second later he forced the smile back on, though it wavered quite a bit. Be cool, be friendly.

"...Please dude, she's not even mine. I... I can't...," he gulped heavily and squared his jaw, "Seriously, please. Beat me up if you have to, I have like, ten dollars in my wallet if you want that. In fact, take my card, that's fine, just please let her go." He searches the man's eyes imploringly, and stands steadfastly in front of the Gardevoir and motions for his Breloom to stand behind him too. He considers having Portobello use TOXIC for a fleeting moment, but he senses the trainer might be able to strike him faster.

"I'll do anything. Really," at the very least he can stall for time, "What's your name, man? Maybe we can come to some sort of agreement."

Petalburg Woods felt like home to Aster and his breloom, Portobello. This was where they'd first met, a scrawny kid crying over a scabbed knee and a tender-hearted shroomish that led him out of the forest. It was also the place he'd discovered his love for nature and for wild pokemon. Despite his warm feelings towards the area, he knew it wasn't a safe place for just anyone to venture into. After all, he was here on a missing person case.

He wasn't on the clock as a ranger, but he still showed up in his full uniform and hiking boots when he'd heard the family of the famous cross-country biking athlete, Remus, was forming a search party after five days of his absence. Apparently he frequented the woods for rough terrain training.

Aster trekked deeper into the thicket, farther than he'd recommend any civilian to, with his breloom and gogoat at his side. He kept an eye out for bike tracks and broken branches while his pokemon sniffed at the air. He glimpsed a few footprints in the soil and his heart beat picked up in pace as he hoped Remus had just gotten a bit lost and decided to camp out until help came. He followed the tracks but at the end of them was not the biker.

"Yo! You there! If you're part of the search party, it's better to stick with a group. Its easy to get turned around this far out," he said with his best customer service smile.

He saw their reflection approaching in the window. He was used to dealing with threats in this part of town but something told him this man was particularly dangerous. Aster kept up the façade of self grooming while sneakily stealing glances of them in the store window. He took the hair raising on the back of his neck as they slowly closed the distance as his cue to swiftly mumble, "Go, Portobello" (breloom).

His pokemon deftly used SPORE to put the attacking metang to sleep, but he hadn't been fast enough to prevent the Gallade from seizing Gardevoir. He spun around to meet the eyes of his attacker and put his arms out in a placating gesture. He couldn't help scrunching up his face in a mixture of worry and his best customer service smile.

"Whoa, easy there buddy. Let's not do anything rash here. I know I'm irresistible but a handsome guy like you doesn't need to resort to violence to get my attention," he says, the corner of his mouth twitching. "Why don't we all calm down and talk this out like adults." He deftly pulls a crystal from his breast pocket.

"Here, why don't you take this amethyst? Seems like you could benefit more from its calming affects than me."

"Ah, shit. Not again."

At this point Aster swears that half a ranger's job is dealing with snorlaxs falling asleep in the most inconvenient places possible. He can't really blame the pokemon this time; route 117 is definitely up there in the top 10 most relaxing places in Hoenn (even he has had an occasional nap by the fountain here), but of course the big lug decided to pass out right in front of the entrance to Mauville City.

Aster puts his hands on his hips and looks at the creature disapprovingly but full of affection, not unlike a father who has caught his toddler attempting to draw on the walls with crayons.

"I hate to wake you pal," he mumbles to himself. And he really does, both because the poor thing must be exhausted and because disturbing its slumber could possibly have destructive repercussions. He sighs to himself as he envisions the sleep deprived pokemon rampaging over the lovely gardens of 117 and picks up the radio from his belt.

"This is ranger Rousseau requesting back-up at Mauville's east entrance. We've got another sleeping snorlax issue. Better safe than sorry."

It suddenly hits him that his horoscope for today was right on the nose. He was feeling stuck and blocked on the path to his goals.
