His brother. Huh. Eventhough Tam won’t say it, above all else, Orion’s words make him think of his own brother. Would he ever do anything to stop his older brother from getting what he wants? No, he simply doesn’t care enough, but he’s not oblivious to the fact that throughout their childhood, Ian always thought he did nothing other than get in his way. They never got along back then. They still don’t.

”Family always makes things tricky, huh?” Tam has never been one to do things for the sake of his family, and perhaps that’s exactly why they have never gotten along.

Apparently, Orion’s situation isn’t all that different.

Lilycove. He had passingly heard something about that, but unsurprisingly enough, he has never cared much for politics.

While mysterious hot blond surrounded by fog over here puts out his cigarette, Tam finds himself thinking that he really could use one right about now.

The PRESSURE that fills the air when an unusual-looking and unusually fast Aerodactyl falls upon his Ursaluna is not missed by the ranger, and while it’s something he’s no stranger to, it results as bothersome as ever. Not nearly as annoying as when he met Articuno, though. Not as suffocating. Probably because this time he’s not fucking freezing.

And, speaking of the weather…

This rain and fog are fucking weird. Better sttart with that before anything else.
[break][break]
With a plan of action in mind, Tam reaches for his belt, plucking a pokéball from it and summoning a Togekiss. He gestures and the Jubilee Pokémon responds in turn, circling over the warehouse with DEFOG.
[break][break]
But, the mist that seems to be coming from his opponent quickly returns, and it all gives Tam this concerning feeling he can’t quite explain. Like this is something he should know about. Like it’s something he has heard of before.

Despite the dire circumstances and unknown factions, he remains calm, for this is the sort of situation in which Tam thrives. There may even be the slightest of smiles for a second there.

”Ursaluna.”
[break][break]
The bear clings to the Aerodactyl in the midst of SKY DROP, claws attempting to cut and pierce. She would do her best to use her HIGH HORSEPOWER against it, but Tam is not one to rely on just this.

Since Togekiss' DEFOG hasn't done much to deal with the annoying mist and the harmful rain, his Tyranitar is called out next. The Armor Pokémon appears with a roar, her SAND STREAM bringing upon the warehouse a raging SANDSTORM.

He’s not the type of person anyone would expect to see volunteering at a place like this. He does not seem kind. He does not seem nice. He does not smile. Yet, while all of these things might be true, there’s still a box in his hands, and in it there’s a first aid kit along with medicine for people and pokémon alike. What little the League could spare.

To make up for the sheer lack of resources, his Chansey stands next to him, and it’s eagerly that she waves at both Noah Camus and Hailee Jacobs when spotting them nearby.

”Hey.” In contrast with his pokémon, Tam is calm as ever, and it’s as soon as he reaches his side that he passes the box to Noah. ”There’s some meds in there for those who need it. Chansey, can you make rounds with LIFE DEW?”

The pokémon does her best attempt at saluting him, but her arms are simply too short. Wasting no time, she waddles off.

This is the least they can do. It’s not enough, Tam knows as much.

”Oh.” Whatever Tam may have thought of the flyer presented to him by Caleb Harcourt would remain unknown, for his impassive expression failed to reveal much at all. He simply looked at it, gaze fixing on his name for a second or two before looking at Caleb once more.

It looked as if he were sizing him up, silently considering before giving his response. Technically, anyone who wished it could apply to Ranger Academy, but they were supposed to be careful for the sake of avoiding potential infiltration from Team Rocket and all other kinds of criminal efforts. Background checks and what not.

Before even asking the stranger for his name, Tam asked a much different question:

The Rangers are part of the League. Tam knows Orion is just as aware of that as he is. Yet, even if that’s the case, Tam agrees: it’s not the same. In the League, bureaucracy reigns supreme, everyone just does their job, and most people don’t really seem to care much for each other. The Rangers, on the other hand, are… Well, he doesn’t really have a word for it, but they matter to him. He trusts them. He knows they’ll be there if he needs them.

”That makes two of us.” Tam has no reason to trust in most people. He has no reason to care for them either. It’s different with his department, especially with those who work under him.

He finishes his whiskey, quick to gesture for a refill.
[break][break]
”Was it really that bad? Being a councilman? Before all that happened, I mean.”

He’s not sure why he asks, but he does, calm as ever. Maybe it’s just curiosity. Maybe it’s small talk. Maybe he wants to know more about Orion.

Now, he may not consider himself to be a good judge of character, but everything about this guy just screams ’suspicious’ to him. Like, there’s literal dark smoke coming out of his body. Weird as fuck. It does give him a familiar feeling he can’t really pinpoint, though…

Where? He’s not sure. Does he take a moment to think about it and try to remember? Fuck no.

”I think not.” As if he’s going to let this weird, suspicious (albeit handsome) guy go when he’s standing at a location known to be used for smuggling operations. Yet, much like Cillian Quinn’s, his tone is calm, cold, and levelled. ”I think I’m going to take you in for questioning.”

In stark contrast with her trainer’s calm, the Ursaluna seems to lash out in response to the words spoken, rushing forward in a clear attempt to BULLDOZE the stranger.

The abandoned warehouses are not really abandoned. Everyone knows as much. Smugglers, black market dealers, people of the like; they all make use of the warehouses from time to time. They’re careful. They’re smart. They know how to cover their tracks. Except that, as of late, the Slateport Rangers have managed to stop more than a couple of shipments.

Routes have been tracked.

Tonight, it has led Tam here.
[break][break]
For all they know, usually Team Rocket’s pokémon shipments are only guarded by a couple of smugglers with their own pokémon, nothing he hasn’t handled by himself before. But, in this assumption there is one mistake, for he does not consider that Team Rocket might act differently from what he’d expect.

On this night, when the Ursaluna whose keen senses had been used to find the warehouse slashes through the entrance with sharp claws and a resounding roar, what the Ranger Captain finds within the all but empty warehouse is a single person leaning against a crate while having a smoke.

”I believe you.” Even if others might not, because as Tam sees it, Orion has no reason to lie about something like this. Maybe he’s too quick to trust those who work for him, but he has met avatars before, he has seen what they can do, and because of that, he also knows the danger they pose. He has always thought rangers should be better trained to deal with hostile avatars, legendary pokémon, and all things of the sort.

How would he handle what Orion just dealt with? A person who isn’t even affected by z-moves? Tricky.

Tam considers it, slowly swirling what little liquor is left in his glass, but it’s Orion’s next words that cause him to pause.

”That’s fine. I used to handle everything on my own too, but there’s nothing wrong with relying on those you trust when you need to.”

In his own case, he means his squad.

Ironically, it had been becoming captain against his own will that had taught Tam as much. Having to delegate, having to make decisions, having to rely on others to get their tasks done because he’s too busy to do it all himself. Having to trust. Being a ranger captain had taught him to trust in others.

How to comfort someone? How to tell them things will be alright one day? What is the right thing to say? Empathy may not be his forte, he may have no idea of what kind of terrible emotions dwell with Orion at these moments, but Tam wishes he did know, just so he could understand better. Just so he could help. Help, but not make it go away. Even he understands that those feelings won’t just fade after everything that has happened.

”If he’s one of their avatars, even more reason why you should be careful… Do you want to write a full report on it or would you rather just let it be?” They probably should inform the League, let them know about what Team Rocket’s avatars can do, but he leaves the decision up to Orion. Even Tam knows it won’t be an easy thing to write about.

”Orion.” It’s at this point that most people would probably tell him everything will be okay, that they would take his hand, perhaps even hug him, and try everything to comfort him in whatever way possible. Tam is not like most people, though. He does none of this. But, without him even realizing it, a foot does almost subconsciously move under the table, ranger boot ever so gently touching that of his colleague. ”You know you don’t have to deal with all this alone anymore, right?”

He can rely on all the other rangers. He can rely on him.

That much is left unspoken, but Tam holds Orion’s gaze, and it’s only then that he takes another sip of whiskey. His glass is almost empty.

Well, that explains it, doesn’t it? It’s not like Orion has any reason to lie, and it’s also not like Tam has any reason to suspect that he’s making this up. He may have disappointed Tam, but that doesn’t immediately make him someone who cannot be trusted in any manner in the captain’s eyes, and at the same time, Tam himself has never been prone to lying, so he rarely expects it from others.

And then there’s the way Orion acts. Tam may suck at empathising with people, but he’s not blind. It’s why he doesn’t ask if Orion is certain that this was who he thinks it was, nor does he ask why he didn’t at least call for backup.

Tam takes another sip from his glass, and then, sky blue eyes fall upon Orion once more.

”I’m glad you didn’t get hurt, then.” He means it. Whoever this “unarmed civilian” was, it was clearly someone dangerous. ”You need to be more careful, Orion. You’re going to get yourself killed.”

Tact is not among Tam’s skills, but his words are still true: it was a reckless thing to do.

”Yeah, I haven’t been to one of these in a while either.” Tam responds to Orion Lykos, when the truth is actually that he tends to avoid this sort of gathering. Too many people. Too many whose names he’s probably expected to know but doesn’t actually know at all. That’s just how Tam is: too antisocial for his own damn good.

To a degree, yes, but he would never label it as much. All of his discomfort lies deeply hidden behind a perfectly impassive mask, and for all its worth, at least having a few people he knows sitting near him makes all this somewhat easier for him. Even if he doesn’t talk much. When has Tam ever talked much? Even when noticing Calliope Marks, he just gives her a look in acknowledgement.

”Hmm… I don’t know.” It’s when hearing Hailee Jacobs’s question that Tam finally does give a look at the dishes that had begun to accumulate on the table, his gaze soon being drawn to the boxes brought by Elinor Anderson.

Unlike Orion, Tam is more than pleased when Callan Young tells them what kind of pizza it is.

Which, of course, by Tam standards, is merely displayed with a simple action:

”Pepperoni? Great choice. I’ll take some of that.”

Tam Fawley is no vegetarian. In fact, he barely even eats vegetables.

And thus he ends up with one delicious slice of pizza in hand.
