They had put his name because no one else wanted to deal with it, and truth be told, Tam didn’t want to deal with it either. But, when they had asked, his natural response had been something along the lines of ”Sure, whatever.” since saying “No.” seemed more troublesome anyway.

That’s how he had ended up dealing with some of the new recruits. That’s how he had ended up meeting Caleb Harcourt.

He had been on a mission when he got the call from HQ, but thankfully for the aspiring trainee, he had been close enough for Caleb not to have to wait too long for him to return. Clad in standard ranger uniform paired with a blue armband that marked his rank, Tam soon stepped into the building, a Yamper eagerly following him.

”The Mareep in Route 110 had escaped from one of the farms. I’ll send you my report later.” He tells the receptionist. Clover had had a great time herding them, and now her little white paws were covered in white mud. Tam did not seem to mind this at all, especially considering his attention soon turned to the man he assumed had been waiting for him.

”Heard you’re looking for a job. I'm Tam.”

Some people would probably be intimidated by someone like Calliope Marks. Tam is unfazed, because most things in this world seem utterly incapable of fazing Tam.

”Hire me.” She says.

”Hm.” He replies, as if this were the most appropriate response to that demand. He would ask her why he should hire her, but she passes him a manila folder, and this is taken as her own answer to a question that was never spoken.

Once letting go of her hand, he takes the folder, opens it, and looks at it. Information is calmly read, gathering the most important bits and pieces. A few of the pages are given a glance over. Impressive record, but this is not something he says. He just looks at Calliope once he has read enough.

”Why do you want to be a ranger?”

Not a word is said until their drinks are in front of them. Once they are, Tam takes a deep breath, lifting his glass and allowing himself one quiet sip. Whiskey burns as liquor always does, but that warm sensation that spreads is welcomed, accepted, and even cherished. He seems to relax, even if just a little.

”So, you beat up a civilian while on patrol?”

There has to be a reason for it, no? Maybe they had been causing trouble, maybe they had stolen something, and maybe they had harmed a pokémon. Except that no, Tam had read the report: the civilian had apparently been unarmed, and for all intents and purposes, he had been attacked by a hostile ranger.

Tam is not a morning person. He has never been one. However, being Ranger Captain means that his shifts at headquarters usually start early. He had tried to change this, but in the end, it is what it is, and a fight over schedules is too much trouble for him to bother with.

This morning is one when he’s particularly tired. The kind where despite having a cup of coffee right in front of him, he still ends up drifting off into sleep the moment he reclines on his chair. Yes, Calliope’s assumption was right: he has been sleeping.

Nothing about the way he looks would imply as much, though.

The moment he’s woken by a knock on his office’s door, telling him someone is here to see him, he sighs, downing the now lukewarm beverage. Calloused fingers run through blonde hair, and putting on his jacket (featuring a golden captain’s armband), he walks down to the lobby. A Yamper diligently follows at his heels, her steps eager and quick.

”I heard you were looking for me.” Sky blue eyes fix on Calliope Marks, his expression emotionless. A hand is offered for her to shake. ”Tam Fawley, Slateport Captain. How can I help you?”

Tam has come to Howling at the Moon a couple of times before, and only a couple, because there’s too many damn people in his opinion. He can ignore them, sure, but drinks aren’t as enjoyable when there’s people around, and he’d much rather drink alone at his house. This is the sort of thing he does only when he absolutely needs some alcohol in his system to forget about whatever bullshit happened during the day. Today is one of those days. Thanks, Orion Lykos.

”Whiskey. On the rocks.” No hey, no smile, nothing at all. He’s here for one thing and one thing alone. Orion’s anxiety may lead him to stick close to Tam, Tam’s annoyance leads him to ignore everyone and focus on what he wants. At least he does pick one of the quieter spots in the bar, where no one will likely bother them.

Through it all, he wonders how it had come to this, but no question of the sort is asked just yet. Tam simply waits, and although he has never been much of an empathetic person, he doesn’t just stand and stare while Orion retrieves everything the police station had taken when bringing him into their custody. Is there really a need to take someone’s prosthetic? That seems a bit excessive.

Yet another thing about this police station to make him uneasy. To go along with how being here feels wrong. With how he feels watched. With the fact that it’s as if every action of his is being judged by those around him. Mostly people would call that anxiety, Tam would just call it police stations being annoying. Either way, he seems as impassive as ever, and if there’s any sign of the discomfort he feels it is only in the way he sighs once they make it out.

Sunlight greets them, causing him to squint for a second there, and even though it’s still midday and they should probably make it back to HQ, Tam starts walking in the opposite direction. Towards the nearest bar, actually. He needs a fucking drink.

He also needs explanations, so apparently, this is what they’re doing. A decision made on impulse yet acted upon with full assertiveness. Typical Tam behaviour.

Tam is no extrovert. When all of Slateport Ranger HQ had drawn lots to see who would stay behind to cover the patrols in case of anything, he had wished he could be the one chosen. He had even volunteered. But, alas, even when he had, he had known that as captain, it’s his duty to be here.

If it were an official meeting he’d understand, but whatever reason people may have to gather to eat like this completely escapes him. Still, he’s here! He even brought food! And Noah Camus! And Orion Lykos, because surely Orion must be better than him at this sort of thing! Like, he was a councilman once, wasn’t he? It’s almost like Tam has forgotten that he himself was the one who demoted the once elite ranger to cadet because of his attitude…

”Hey, we brought pecha berry cobbler. Noah here made them.” Setting the mouth-watering dish down on the table, Tam greets Laurence Anderson with a nod, the same courtesy being extended in general to all of those present, including those he has never been introduced to like Josh Devlin and Matt Vice.

Sky blue eyes scan the room, searching for familiar faces like those of his own Slateport rangers. People like Raziel Beckett, Hailee Jacobs, @arashi, Caleb Harcourt, @jericho, and even Calliope Marks. boruta maher, who Tam knows will likely also have to be here given that he's a captain too. Even people he’s vaguely acquainted with like jack wainwright. For now, he approaches no one else.

”Is Hailee coming?” He asks Noah then, assuming he'll know the answer. By his side, his Yamper watches everyone, large ears perked up and tail wagging.

He’s not angry. Not really. It takes a lot to push Tam to that point. Even more than a stunt that could potentially cost both Orion and him their jobs. He is disappointed, however, and he makes that no secret. Tam has never been one to care much for pretending.

Orion is sorry, but what good does “sorry” do? ”Don’t be sorry, be better.” His own father’s words ring in his mind, even if they had never been words meant for him when growing up. Tam does not say this. He does not accept the apology either. He does, however, walk closer to the cell, opening the door that had already been unlocked.

”Come on. You can explain once we’re out of here.”

Tam had never expected to have to bail one of his rangers out of jail, but apparently that’s what his life is now. They could have the conversation here, but he’d rather not linger at this place. It makes him uncomfortable, even if he doesn’t show it.

In a corner of the office, right by the open window, is a small dog bed, and in it, it’s peacefully that a Yamper slumbers. Until someone steps through the open door, that is. The sound causes her large ears to perk up, and Clover soon finds herself looking at both the unfamiliar ranger and his Meowstic with curiosity. She doesn’t approach, though. Not yet. She simply yawns as if trying to shake her sluggishness away.

”Razz, right? Have a seat.” If only for a second there, Tam almost gives into the impulse to call him ’Kingsman’, but then he remembers Laurence Anderson, and after all this time, the Head Ranger’s words are as if embedded into his system. Perhaps Razz benefits from this conditioning.

”You have a pretty impressive track record, and I don’t think anyone could deny how much you’ve done for both the Rangers and Hoenn as a hole.” Speeches like these always feel strange to Tam, but he’s as calm as he usually is; the words being delivered in a neutral tone while his hands are laced over the desk. ”I called you here to thank you on behalf of the Ranger Department.”

Orion disappointed him.

Getting a call from the local police station about one of his cadets being in custody for assaulting a civilian serves as a bitter reminder to Tam. A reminder never to expect much from anyone. Seriously, how long has it been since he lifted Orion’s suspension? A few weeks? Definitely less than a month. The Slateport Splashfest has barely ended, and here he is… walking to a cell.

Perhaps Orion should count himself lucky that thanks to his years working as a ranger in Slateport, Tam has a surprisingly good relationship with the police department due to their collaboration when dealing with poachers and pokémon smugglers. Not like that makes the conversation any easier for the Ranger captain, though. He’d much rather be at home, watching a movie with his dogs.

”So, what the hell happened to keeping your head down?” Is the first thing he says to Orion this time, staring at him from across the bars. As per usual, his expression is as emotionless as it is calm.

Thanks, I can’t really take credit for it.” Is all Tam says on that matter, since the fact is that Dame Clover Cottonbottom had been named by a few of the cadets at Slateport Ranger headquarters. He has never been good at naming his pokémon, so he’d rather let other people do it for him. But, alas, there’s no point in telling Orion all this.

It’s better to simply let things be. To let the meeting end there, on a high note, instead of allowing it to drag on to a point that may become uncomfortable.

He also has never been good at this sort of thing, but a job is a job, and at the end of the day, this meeting was necessary.

"Oh... Thanks." Pausing his enjoyment of this whole fishing thing for the sake of having some nice food suits Tam just fine, specially after how hungry the scent of BBQ had made him. After all this time, he has come to really appreciate Noah Camus's cooking, and all in all, this makes for a decent day even if at first he hadn't been too sure about what is there to like about fishing.

Clover seems to be enjoying her meal as well, as if her reward for all her hard work and moral support, and even Hailee Jacobs is now awake.

Who would have thought this little fishing trip to the docks due to the Splashfest's need for ranger collaboration would end up going so well?

Admittedly, even though Tam would probably never say it out loud, he quite likes Slateport's rangers.

The fact of the matter is that the Rangers are spread thin. That for reasons beyond Tam’s own comprehension the profession doesn’t appeal to most (since, as already mentioned, he’s terrible at sympathising with people), and given everything that’s going on, everything that has been going on for years now, they need every useful person they can get.

As a captain, Tam will do whatever is within his power for the sake of the rangers, he swore as much. And, Orion Lykos, despite his temper and despite whatever incident may have led others to suspend him, has proven himself to be useful more than once. A single look at the man’s file had told Tam as much.

So, really, this isn’t a favour out of sympathy, nor is it out of pity. This is a favour for the sake of the rangers and for that of Hoenn, because he expects Orion to do his damn job like he promised. That’s all Tam wants: people who care about doing their job.

”You’re welcome.” With that, he passes him the box. A red armband, a red badge, the marks of a cadet like any other.

Just as Tam is about to say something else, a pitter-patter can be heard approaching the office, and sure enough, it’s through the ajar door that a small Yamper walks into the office. She looks up at Orion, ears perked up and short tail wagging, but all the man gets is an excited bark before she approaches her own trainer, sitting on the dog bed by the open window.

”Hi, Clover.” Right then and there, for the first time during this whole meeting, Tam smiles, even if fleetingly and faintly. Blink and you miss it; gone from his lips by the time his attention returns to once-more cadet.

”You can go, unless you have anything else you’d like to talk about.”

He's not a particularly wordy man and social interactions exhaust the hell out of him. That's just how Tam is.
