Thankfully, Tam is a patient man, so he patiently waits for the BBQ. Despite the mouthwatering aroma that fills the air, he’s able to focus on the fishing, and honestly, he’s kind of starting to see why some people are into this.

Sitting here on the dock, on this comfortable chair, during a nice summer day, with a beer in hand, and with the sound of the waves… It’s relaxing. And the occasional bite pulling at his line brings a certain amount of variety.

Shame that aquatic pokémon aren’t of particular interest to him, even if this last Barraskewda puts up quite the fight.

In the end, Tam still wins, he still releases the pokémon back into the water, and he still casts his line one more time.

If someone else were in his place, they would perhaps have a problem with Orion’s attitude, maybe even find it to be both disrespectful and distasteful. But, thankfully for the currently-suspended elite Ranger, Tam is utterly, unquestionably, and undeniably unfazed by it all.

”Why else would anyone be a ranger?”

”Dunno. Neither of those were my reasons for it back when I joined fresh out of highschool.” The ranger captain admits with a shrug. In truth, it had been because he has always found pokémon much easier to deal with than people. Of course, back then he had also been into competitive battling, but there’s no point in telling Orion about all that. ”I was asking about your reasons, not anyone else’s.”

For a short moment, his gaze goes from trainer to pokémon, watching the Absol that to Tam is a choice that says a lot about who Orion may be as a person. It’s then that he looks at him once more.

”Do you think you could still do those things as a cadet? Protect Pokémon? Save the environment?”

The implication of a demotion is spoken as if it were the simplest thing in the world, for truly, ranks are of little importance to the Unovan. All that matters to him is getting their work done, but he does have to respect the rules when it comes to this sort of thing, and if Orion is as smart of a man as he seems, he had probably expected this. Elite Rangers with an attitude are apparently bad for the image of their institution, or so Tam has been told.

Okay, so, full disclosure: Tam had no idea who was until the man e-mailed him a few days ago.

In his defence, he’s usually terrible at remembering people’s names unless they have met more than a few times (and sometimes not even then does he remember, if the person doesn’t manage to catch his attention), he cares little for politics, and the breakroom gossip about other ranger’s actions goes in one ear and out the other.

So, he had found himself a copy of the former councilman’s file and given it a good look over, and once he had done so, Tam had come to a single conclusion: this guy could benefit from some therapy.

But, then again, the same could be said about just anyone in Hoenn, Tam himself included. Therapists annoy him, they always ask too many questions he’d rather not deal with.

”Just Tam is fine.” Is the first thing he says to Orion when the man enters his office, sky blue eyes falling upon him while his expression remains as impassive as always. Tam couldn’t care less for formalities, and years had led him to adapt after had made it very clear that he’d rather have rangers call each other by their first names back when Tam had first transferred. It’s all the same to him, honestly. Even if the Fawleys probably can’t stand that he carries their name so nonchalantly and without giving it the weight they think it should be given.

Dealing with his fishing rod while also dealing with Noah’s isn’t all that bad when having Clover to help him. The Yamper sits by his side, watching the lines as if waiting for any signs of a catch, and when one of them finally tenses and the reels begin to spin, she barks her little lungs out until helping Tam by temporarily paralysing the fish he brings out of the sea.

His is a Lumineon. Noah’s is a Bruxish. He carefully returns them both to the ocean because neither seems particularly interesting. Just fish. Just like the one the cadet is currently grilling.

Except, of course, that's kind of what happens, because while Tam is busy with reeling in a monster of a Remoraid, something pulls at Noah's line too, causing him to have to hurry.
