Being too young to produce eggs of their own, Playhouse Pokémon tend to carry other objects in their pouches as if to make up for this fact. This particular Happiny had tried a variety of different things, and in an attempt to stop her from grabbing random household items and putting them in her pouch, Tam had given her the bouncy ball thinking it may look and feel enough like an egg to keep her satisfied.

Of course, as the Happiny sees it, the bouncy ball is particularly precious not only because it reminds her of an egg, but because it was a gift from her trainer, and so those screams that to any human would have sounded something like ”Happ! Happiiiiiiiiiiny!” are more than justified in her opinion!

When the Driftloon starts floating in the direction the ball had gone, she panics and starts chasing after it too, but her little legs are too short, and the ghosts makes it there much faster than she ever would.

To her surprise, it makes the ball roll towards her, and it’s triumphantly that she grabs onto it.
[break][break]
”Egg!” Yes, she knows it’s not an egg, but maybe this Drifloon isn’t so bad, if it was willing to help her…

Happiny squints, extending the bouncy ball towards the ghost without letting go of it.
[break][break]
”Egg?” She questions, tilting her head.

This is so unfair!

How come all her friends get to go have fun adventures with Tam and she has to stay here all alone at this lame place? Well… To be fair, it’s not all her friends that went, and she’s not alone, but Stufful went to find a nice spot to nap in the sun the moment they made it here, and that means they can’t play together! Lame!

Upset, the Happiny puffs up her cheeks, somehow making herself look even rounder than usual, and with a gentle shove, she pushes the sparkling white bouncy ball she usually carries in her pouch, making it roll on the floor.

Round and round it goes… A little further than she had expected. She waddles after it, and when she sees a Drifloon approaching, she waddles even faster.
[break][break]
”Mine!” Happiny declares protectively, grabbing her bouncy ball, but alas, it slips out of her grasp, and as bouncy balls do, it bounces away and off the wall. "Nooooo-"

Most rangers are more than familiar with pokémon behaviour, it’s a given with their line of work, but Absol are one of those pokémon that it’s generally agreed they should look out for. Not because of aggression. Because of their nature. Alpine, solitary, and often misunderstood due to their supposed ability to predict disasters.

What kind of disaster awaits them?
[break][break]
Surely has to be more than an injured hiker, especially since soon enough the man is running out of the forest and leaving the pair of rangers behind. So much for that.

Tam pauses, letting out a small sigh and turning as well. His Yamper sniffs the air in search for the Absol, and when his Snorlax watches the trees, it’s hard to tell if it's doing the same or searching for food. Honestly, it’s probably both.

It seems as if the Disaster Pokémon may be gone…

”Well... Here’s to hoping this doesn’t mean the forest is gonna burn down or something. I'll report it to the local HQ.”

Tam makes a beeline for the pokémon food aisle. Masterfully, as if it were no problem at all, he avoids the people running around the pokémart; calmly weaving his way through the crowd without ever running into anyone. Naturally, he expects Howl to keep up, and to their credit, they do, and they even bring up something the blond hadn’t really considered until now.

”Shouldn’t we… interfere? Sir?”

Pause. Tam stops on his tracks.
[break][break]
”Hmm… You think so?” Howl does have a point: rangers have a certain degree of authority, and they do have the duty to help in situations of crisis, especially if there are pokémon involved. But, can this crowd even be controlled? The store’s security is already doing what they can and there’s a chance that if they were to intervene they’d just make things worse. ”Just Tam is fine, by the way.”

With that, he keeps on walking.

A few steps and he makes it to the almost empty pokémon food aisle, sighing at the sight of what little is left. He picks up a can, looks at the nutritional information, and frowns just so slightly. ”Yeah… That won’t do.”

While Tam is busy with that, a woman nearby stacks up a cart with just about anything she can grab.

If Tam were someone else, he would have found it funny to hear an ice type that favours Freeze-Dry and Ice Shard be called a “hotshot”, but just as it happened before with the irony of a cartographer getting lost, it all just goes right over his head. Needless to say, the Unovan isn’t great with word play.

”Well… That’s good, I guess. Would be troublesome if we found ourselves a freeze-dried cartographer.”

Was that a joke? Maybe, but as per usual, it was spoken with a calm and neutral tone, and it was also almost as if bad foreshadowing for what was about to happen.

Just as Tam began to lower his guard and think that maybe this could go smoothly and they would easily find their lost explorer, the ambient temperature harshly dropped, and with the clip-clopping of hooves, an equine pokémon that looked as if made of ice suddenly approached them.

One that apparently Laurence Anderson was familiar with. So much so that he gave the pokémon’s neck a few pats with his bare hands. That had to hurt, right? Wasn’t it freezing?

”Cool horse.” Literally, but the play on words was no more than a coincidence. Completely and totally unintentional. ”Isn’t that cold?”

The year had begun with a blast. Literally. Yet, despite the ruins of the night market existing as a constant reminder of this fact, as it always happened, Hoenn and even Slateport City itself slowly healed after New Year’s eve’s tragedy. Unbeknownst to most, horror would soon strike once more, like never seen before, but in the lull that overtook the metropolis during the early summer, all was well at Ranger HQ.

Well… All except for the fact that Hoenn’s notorious tropical heat was merciless on this particular late June day.
[break][break]
The air was heavy and stagnant, and the briny breeze coming from the nearby ocean did little to quell the heat wave. It had been like this for a few days now, and standing right beneath the sun, at the headquarter’s outdoors training facilities, the ranger could do no more than sigh.
[break][break]
Had he been assigned with training new recruits because others couldn’t be bothered with going outside?
[break][break]
Most would see it as an honour, as a sign of being given more responsibilities, but at the time Tam just saw it as something he wanted to get over with quickly because this heat was starting to get to him. Nonchalant and holding onto a cold can of seltzer, he leaned against a slumbering Snorlax – patting its side.

”Okay, so… I’m Tam, I’ll be your instructor for today. Here’s what I want you to do: wake this Snorlax without the help of any pokémon.”

Easy enough, right?

Before stepping away, sky blue eyes fixed on the recruit, his expression calm as ever.

Like most things Tam says, it’s a statement made in a terribly matter-of-fact manner, coming in heavy contrast with the way his own Snorlax now sits a few metres away – calm and as if basking under the sun. His Yamper has moved on to bothering Marshall’s poor Luxio, wagging her tail and hopping around in front of the feline as if attempting to play with him.

Tam could take pity on the pokémon and call Clover to his side, but honestly, Marshall is too damn distracting for him to even notice.
[break][break]
Especially because he’s suddenly winking and talking about getting lunch?!
[break][break]
If the ranger were someone else, he would wonder if his newest friend over here (or more like acquaintance?) is trying to hit on him or something. But, Tam being Tam, he thinks little of it.

”Sure.” Taking Marshall’s phone, he reaches into his pocket to bring out his own, a picture of a sleeping Clover being clearly visible on his lock screen before he opens the keypad and hands the phone over.

”Lunch sounds good. I’m usually in Slateport, though.” He’s not exactly sure why he makes the clarification while typing his number, but he does anyway. It’s not even entirely true: that may be where he lives and the HQ he reports to, but ranger work often means travelling all over the region.

Just as he finishes entering his name as a new contact, Clover runs to his side, carrying his now muddy cap.

”Oh… Thanks.” Looking at the Yamper, there’s an ever so slight smile, one that remains at his lips when he turns back towards Marshall and gives him his phone back. ”Guess I’ll see you around. Though try not to run into any more hungry wild pokémon.”

Tam allows himself a sigh of relief. One that perhaps exists in equal parts because of how glad he is to see the wild Snorlax walk away and because of the deep sense of alleviation he feels when the bike finally decelerates. Usually he’s not against this sort of thing; the kind that comes with rushes of adrenaline, excitement, and a plethora of potential risks. But, usually he’s not thrown into this kind of situation unexpectedly.

At least it’s not like he has any actual reasons to be annoyed. The bike has stopped, the pokémon don’t look as if they were hurt during the confrontation, and all is well and good. Marshall (as he finally introduces himself) even turns to look at him, elation marking his gaze and seemingly obviously to the fact that his hair now looks like a yellow featherduster.

Not like Tam’s own hair is all that neat after what they just went through. He hasn't even realised that his uniform's cap fell off, leaving his hair to also be a blond mess.
[break][break]
”I guess? It’s not really a big deal.” People’s gratitude has always seemed strange to him. He’s just doing his job, isn't he? Still, he takes Marshall’s hand after a second or two, giving a firm shake when doing so.
[break][break]
”I’m Tam. I don’t think that Snorlax will bother you again, not for a while at least.”
[break][break]
He’ll probably still put out a warning for the other rangers when getting back to HQ, since a wild pokémon like that getting close to tourists is never all that good. Especially if it’ll go after their food…

Oh, right. He probably should get off the bike.
[break][break]
Suddenly, Tam becomes acutely aware that he’s still holding onto Marshall, so he lets go, hurriedly stepping off the bike the moment he does so.

When Tam had said ”Dude, get on your bike.” he had not expected to get dragged along for the ride, but apparently, this is a day when his expectations are meant to be defied. He goes along with it, because why wouldn’t he? And, when @marshall tells him to hang on tight, an arm even wraps around the waist of the racer.

It’s at this point that it should be mentioned that Tam has zero experience with motorbikes, especially with motocross, and that this sure doesn’t make for the best first experience in the world. So, as should only be expected, when the bike shoots off at high speed, there are two thoughts that cross the mind of the ranger:

One, ”Why the hell did I go along with this?”
[break][break]
And two, ”I don’t even get a helmet?!”
[break][break]
He forces himself to turn his attention back to the Snorlax, noticing that the PARALYSIS induced by Clover’s NUZZLE paired with the Luxio’s SCARY FACE seem to at least have managed to slow the giant enough for them not to be at risk of being caught. However, that leaves their pokémon at the mercy of the Snorlax, and like anyone would when denied a meal upon waking up with a craving, it’s angry.

Well! Time to fight fire with fire!
[break][break]
The hand that isn’t firmly gripping Marshall’s shirt reaches for one of the minimised Friend Balls clipped to the belt of his uniform, and from it, a Snorlax somewhat larger than the wild one is released to stand between it and the smaller pokémon. Only then does Tam raise his voice, shouting a command over the sound of the bike, the barking, and growling:

”HAMMER ARM!”
[break][break]
His eternally nameless Sleeping Pokémon does as told, and putting his whole body into it, he throws a punch so powerful that it causes his opponent to stumble back and fall. Will that be enough to scare it back into the woods? Tam would hope as much, if he weren't so busy hoping for his own survival.

Under different circumstances, Tam would take a moment to pause and tell not-so-talkative-anymore biker over here that his name is in fact not “Mr Ranger”, but with the Snorlax now in motion, it’s as if his mind kicks into high gear. Act first, talk later.

And act he does.

Making good use of his occasional evenings of jogging and all those years he spent as part of his high school’s track team, Tam runs towards Marshall and his Luxio, shoving the treats back in the backpack the moment he does. He could have thrown them for the Snorlax to follow, but it’s an action taken without much thought, and the Luxio did look as if it really likes those treats. It would be a shame if they were lost.

In the corner of his eye, he can see the Snorlax sitting up and sniffing the air, it’s eyes suddenly opening. It stares at both of them, and suddenly it’s as if it were the most nimble pokémon ever despite probably being at least a thousand pounds. It stands, its gleaming gaze fixed on them.

Tam reaches for a Friend Ball just as the Snorlax starts running, from it releasing an eager Yamper

That should slow it down a bit... They can hope, at least.

It’s at this point that, if there were a camera in the vicinity, Tam would look directly into it as if he were Jim in an episode of The Office. Instead, he simply stands next to the Snorlax and watches the scene, his gaze falling upon the Luxio that fiercely defends the backpack as if its life depends on it. Of course, he doesn’t even bother with helping Marshall. Tam may be a ranger, but the talkative motorbike enthusiast brought this upon himself.

”Doesn’t look like he’s a big fan of sharing.”

Obvious statement, but it’s said all the same. The ranger leans against the Snorlax’s side then, and when he does, he notices it: the rumbling. See, Tam has a Snorlax of his own, and because he does, he knows just how obsessed with food the species is. What he hadn’t expected, however, is that a wild one would react to the mention of treats and snacks.

Or, is it perhaps that its nose is so sensitive that it can somehow smell them despite packaging and all that?

Whatever the case, Tam takes a step back as a safety precaution, and turning to look at the Snorlax, he sees it open its mouth. Without even getting up or opening its eyes, as if it were still asleep, it belches loudly – the sound reverberating through the forest of Route 120.

Gross.

But, also concerning. Especially when the Sleeping Pokémon starts moving…

See? Meddlesome people. When doing jobs like these there’s usually at least one or two, and most of the time they aren’t useful at all. It’s not that Tam particularly dislikes them or doesn’t appreciate it when they do try to help, but people are just… much more difficult to deal with than pokémon.

So, bracing himself for what’s to come, the ranger sighs, caring little for the fact that Mr Handsome Mystery Racer over here can definitely see and hear it. That fact doesn’t even cross Tam’s mind.

”Not too sure, I fell asleep for the “pokémon whispering” classes back at Ranger academy.”

Is that a joke? Maybe, maybe not, it’s hard to tell given the utterly monotone way in which he speaks every word. And yet, if one were to pay enough attention, in that calm baritone of his there’s the distinctive notes of a foreign accent – northern Unovan, to be exact.

Tam notices Marshall’s accent too, but he takes him for one of the typical tourists that visit Lilycove and are out here to try some “extreme activities”. There’s nothing too extreme about dealing with a Snorlax.

Well, for the most part. It all depends on the approach, no?

Stepping closer to the sleeping giant, Tam considers his options before turning to look at the stranger once more.

The Pokémart is like a fucking warzone.

Tam had not taken part in the Three Day War or any of that nonsense, but when stepping through the store’s automatic sliding doors, he’s pretty damn sure that this is kind of what that must have been like. People are running from one side of the store to the other, grabbing just about anything they can grab and caring little for how much they break in the process. They yell, scream at each other, and he even notices a few blows being exchanged here and there. Companion pokémon hiss and growl, sparks filling the air.

Through it all, the ranger watches from near the entrance, his expression deadpan despite the way he blinks a few times as if to make sure he isn’t imagining the chaos before his eyes.

Tam and a cadet had been asked to stop by the Pokémart to stock up food for the pokémon that are kept at HQ, but they sure as hell hadn’t expected to step into a scene like this one.

It’s as if the chaos doesn’t even affect him.
