He had expected that the Absol would be nearby, but he hadn’t thought it’d still be this close, especially after seeing more people show up. When the yowl breaks through the air, Tam doesn’t even flinch, but the hiker’s shaking and whimpering tells him all he needs to know: this is probably the same pokémon that attacked him.

”It’ll be alright. It’s just a pokémon.” There’s nothing particularly reassuring about the way he speaks, it’s more monotone and matter-of-fact than anything, but in his words there is indeed truth: pokémon can be dealt with.

Tam reaches to help Memo with the hiker, rangers flanking the injured man and helping him walk. Once an arm is wrapped around him, his free hand grabs a Friend Ball. The button at its centre clicks and in a flash of scarlet light, a huge Snorlax is released to stand between them and the source of the sound – hoping its presence will be enough to deter the Absol from attempting to attack.

For good measure, Tam also releases his Yamper, who barks excitedly as if unaware of the tense situation she had just stepped into.

”Clover, keep watch, okay?”

The Yamper wags her tail, but she’s well trained enough to know to paralyse and deal with potential threats.

The presence of Absol has a tendency to make people uneasy, even when they don’t do anything harmful to begin with. Most associate them with calamity, disaster, and suffering. It makes no sense, not to Tam at least, but even if it’s completely nonsensical, the concerned calls about a group of Absol having been spotted near Meteor Falls come anyway. Enough for the rangers to decide to send someone to check it out.

That person, of course, is Tam.

What he didn’t expect, however, was that someone else would actually take interest in the Disaster Pokémon instead of avoiding them, and so it is that with a goal in common, he has found himself working with .
[break][break]
If Tam were the sort of person to care a little more, he would have spent these past few days theorising on what sort of calamity the gathering of Absol could be foretelling. Instead, he just wants to make sure they don’t cause any trouble and that people don’t mess with them on purpose.

And so, that’s what he does, finding himself leaning against a tree with his Komala clinging to his shoulder when Yvaine draws his attention to the bronze-coloured Absol that had recently joined the pack.

”Maybe it’s worried because it looks different from them.” Tam shrugs, then turns to look at her. ”Your hair is almost the same colour, maybe it’ll like you.”

It may be a joke or it may not, it’s hard to tell when his voice is so very lacking in emotion. Monotone.

The call comes just as Tam is on his way out of Fortree City, and when it does, he can do no more than stare at the two-way radio in his hand, as if waiting for the inevitable follow-up message that says something along the lines of “This is dispatch. That was just a joke. Over.” However, that follow-up call never comes, and it’s with a sigh that the blond presses the PTT button on the two-way radio, bringing closer to his lips in order to reply:

”Dispatch, this is Fawley. I’m on my way. Over.”

Route 120 stands between the ever so well-travelled Route 121 and Fortree, making it a prime location for a recreational track – especially with how close it is to the tourist hotspot that is Lilycove City. After having lived in Hoenn for years, Tam knows all these things about the region, and because he does it’s that he also knows that this may be difficult to deal with. Not because of the Snorlax, mind you, but because of meddlesome people.

Still, an assignment is an assignment, difficult as it may be, and in the end, there are worse things to deal with.

Clad head-to-toe in ranger uniform (cap and all), he makes his way down to the track, sky blue eyes searching for the Snorlax while fully intending to pay little mind to the motorbike enthusiasts all around. He's here to get a job done.

Thread Summary:
An epic tale that takes place... during a fair's fishing game. Excitement! Drama! Angst?! Twelve year old 's dreams of owning a life-size Mareep plush crushed. Why? Who would do such a thing?! Well, Tam would, for his dear Yamper, obviously.

Why is it important?:
Where do I even start? Honestly, this thread was hilarious to write. Plotting with Myria is always a great time, but getting to do something silly like having Tam beat Eris at a fair game was really fun. The thread is meant to be lighthearted and even silly, but I think it displays a lot about both characters.

Tam is generally extremely apathetic about things, so I was really glad to get a chance to write how he acts when he really wants something (even if it's just a plushie). On that same note, it really does show that he generally doesn't care much for the feelings of others and doesn't even consider how his actions may affect them, since he feels no guilt or remorse about beating Eris at the game. In Eris' case, I think it shows well the fact that she's still a kid despite all the things she goes through, and how competitive she can be.

I'm really excited to see these two interact again and what shenanigans happen next time ♡

Tam can do no more than sigh. Not in exasperation, not even in annoyance, but in acceptance. This is just the way it is with Clover sometimes, and it’s exactly why she’s the only one among his pokémon that has been named: because other people always adore her. Yes, his coworkers had named Dame Clover Cottonbottom, not him, but it’s not like Tam would ever complain. After all, he adores her as well.

The problem is that as much adoration as there might be, it sure doesn’t fix this whole situation with the Archeops’ nest, and with the Yamper thoroughly enjoying ’s gushing and pampering, that leaves him to handle this all by himself.

It’s fine.

Ever the friendly pup, Clover licks Georgette’s hand, moving closer as if attempting to jump into her arms, and while the Yamper is busy with all of that, her owner walks over to the side of the building in search for a way to easily climb up. He does indeed find some rocks, perhaps confirming his suspicions, but not trusting that they’ll support his weight, he settles for getting his Snorlax to help.

From there on, getting on the roof is no challenge, but it’s only once he’s actually up there that Tam calls the Sleeping Pokémon back, in favour of a Happiny that clings to his leg from the moment it comes out of its Friend Ball.

Pokémon being auctioned off is no rarity. The unusual ones, the most sought after; they all sell for high prices and have more than a few people interested in bidding. Admittedly, Tam has no idea why anyone would want to pay huge amounts of money for a pokémon, no matter how unusual it might be, but them being sold at a legal auction sanctioned by the Rangers sure is better than having those same pokémon end up in the black market where they might be mistreated or killed.

That’s why he’s here on this night: sent by the rangers to ensure everything goes well and that the pokémon are safe.
[break][break]
If it were his choice, he would be just about anywhere else.
[break][break]
It’s not his sort of scene, he does not bother to socialise or mingle, and yet somehow he still manages to fit in perfectly. Clad in an elegant suit that’s probably worth a whole year of ranger wages, he sits quietly, watching the podium once the auction begins.

That is, at least, until someone addresses him, and turning in the direction of the voice, sky blue eyes fix on the woman next to him.

”Hey.” A stranger, and yet maybe one that might just be able to offer him some valuable insight. ”Here to bid for anything in particular?”

Just as Tam had suspected, did know the cave system well. Even well enough to be familiar with the pokémon roaming the area. Of course, if the Unovan had been more of a suspicious person, he would have perhaps pried for more information as to why the Head Ranger spent so much time in a gelid cavern, but Tam being Tam, he found Lars’ explanation to be sufficient.

It made sense: if summers in Hoenn really were that unbearably hot, of course some people would do anything in their power to avoid that weather.

”Really? I never had to deal with heat like that in Icirrus. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it.” He sighed, and just as he did, his breath was taken away by a wave of frigid wind. Too much heat wasn’t enjoyable, but the same could be said about too much cold, and even if Tam had grown up in a city that was often covered in snow, he still found himself sneezing…

As it often seems to happen to Tam: he’s at the right place, at the right time.

In this case, he’s on his way back to Slateport Ranger HQ after finishing an assignment of no particular note when he hears the S.O.S call. It’s not a rarity in a place like Hoenn. Hell, S.O.S calls may just be 90% of most rangers’ jobs, but that doesn’t mean he’ll dismiss its importance or settle for assuming someone else will respond.

Thankfully, apparently someone who has enough medical knowledge to take care of giving first aid. Good.

”Absol, huh? It’s not something you see every day, Absol don’t usually attack people.” The comment is said in passing, even if it’s more than a mere observation. Sky blue eyes look at their surroundings, making sure said Absol is nowhere in sight, and once he confirms the safety of the location, Tam’s gaze once again falls upon and the injured man. ”I’ll keep watch in case the Absol shows up again. The exit to Petalburg City isn’t far from here… Dealing with it on our way out would be ideal.”

In stark contrast with the excitement of the freshly minted ranger, nothing seems to disturb Tam. It could be taken as seriousness, as him being stern and even solemn, but the fact of the matter is that he simply isn’t one to easily be affected by things. Still, unaffected as he may be, he does listen – paying close attention to Amelia’s response and nodding.

Granted, back when he was training everything was much different. His work as a ranger was expected to be closer to this, if anything: looking after people’s pokémon and keeping the peace. It had all turned out somewhat differently, but that’s not something Tam regrets.

If anything, when @amelia asks about his work as a ranger, the faintest of smiles reaches his lips, even if his response is still as nonchalant as can be:

”Hmm… Kind of? It’s Hoenn, so things are expected to get crazy. I’m from Unova, though. I was a ranger there for a couple of years before coming here.”

If there’s anything to add or to elaborate on, it may have to wait, because it’s then that Tam pauses, his gaze fixing on a couple standing a few metres away. They look worried, as if they were looking for something, and no pokémon stands with them.

He had been at Mt. Chimney my coincidence: completing a job, nothing particularly interesting. But, just as Tam is about to leave and return to Slateport City, it’s the sight of an Absol that leads him to stay… and then another… and another.

Unusual.

For the most part, Absol tend to be solitary, and them gathering rarely means anything good, especially considering their ability to predict disasters.

What’s going on?

Tam looks up towards the volcano’s crater, thoughts of eruptions like that of last year filling his mind, but the day is calm. It can’t be a storm, or meteorologists would have warned as much. Same with tornados. An earthquake, then? Those are much harder to predict, but with how prone to terrible events as Hoenn can be, it literally could be anything.

This is your first mission, right?” Even someone like Tam can understand that some people would be nervous about their first proper assignment as a ranger, especially when he’s being told as much. Granted, he doesn’t remember having felt that way back when he had his first mission, but that had been back at Unova. Everything had been different back then. Hoenn is nothing like Unova.

And yet, different as Hoenn may be, they still have people who love Eevee and problems like those who try to steal them.

”Nice Eevee.” Tam praises when Amelia’s partner appears, even if his enthusiasm is nothing quite like the way his Yamper wags her short tail, excitedly stepping closer to the small vulpine pokémon. ”You’ll blend in well, then. Let’s start with the stalls.”

He takes a step, expecting her to come along, and indeed nearby there’s quite a few stalls filled with Eevee-related merch (most of which has no reason at all to be Eevee-related).

”Do you have any questions about anything?”

For someone who’s patrolling, he seems surprisingly calm, but those sky blue eyes of his watch their surroundings carefully.

To be entirely honest, he’s probably not the best person whom to assign new recruits.

Tam may have been a ranger for years now, and he may be undeniably good at his job, but there’s also no denying that his “people skills”... Well… Let’s just say that can definitely use some work.

Needless to say, he does not make for a particularly sweet or forgiving mentor, but he’s also not needlessly strict or mean. He just sees it as part of his job. In fact, when told that a new recruit would be joining him on his latest assignment, his response was a single word: ”Alright.”

Cut to a few hours later at Slateport’s contest hall.

The Annual Eevee Enthusiast convention.

Eevee and their evolutions are all around, and reasons why rangers should be present are more than obvious to Tam. Still, he explains when meeting the recruit at the agreed upon location:

”You must be Amelia, I’m Tam.” He would have called her ‘Vasquez’ but even now that years have passed, he still remembers that had said Hoennian rangers apparently prefer a more “casual” approach to this sort of stuff. That he actually bothered with remembering her name is already quite impressive when coming from Tam, honestly. He's usually terrible at that sort of stuff.

”Since Eevee are a pokémon most people like, there might be poachers among the convention’s crowd looking to take advantage of the situation, yeah? We’ll be patrolling the area.”
