The sound of what Tam can only assume is the Bewear’s attempt at bringing down a tree is soon left behind, the entrance to Rusturf Tunnel soon becoming visible in the distance. By the time they reach it, Clover has calmed down enough for him to let her back down, and it’s calmly that Tam places the Yamper on the ground.

She looks up at him, giving a single bark yet staying by his side, even when there’s still the clear presence of wild pokémon nearby.

”Alright, let’s head in. We have a job to do.”

And so they do, Route 116 being left behind.

”Huh, I didn’t know that’s how ranching works.” There’s nothing serious about Tam tone, nothing stern, no emotion or judgement; truly neutral, through and through, and yet if one were to pay close attention, right there, there’s the slightest hint of dry humour.

There’s also a faint, barely-there smile when looking at his Yamper, eyes as blue as the sky wandering over to the well-behaved Umbreon and the Espeon that peacefully sleeps nearby. Clover is excitable indeed, and her tail wags ceaselessly as she approaches the Umbreon, attempting to befriend it. Watching the pokémon, Tam finds that the ranch makes for a peaceful scene, even when @oswyn returns with an unexpectedly large drink for him.

Not exactly what he had signed up for here, but, oh well…

When at a ranch, do as ranchers do, right?

”Free of charge? Damn, quite the offer.” This time, there’s actual surprise in his tone – vague, but there all the same, brows rising to match the sentiment. Tam takes a sip from his glass, not even wincing at the strong taste of the liquor, and once it has been drank, he looks at Oswyn once more.

”What would you want from the rangers in return? A hand when you need it? This is pretty good, by the way.”

Yes, he means the drink.

In the grand spectrum of Tam’s indifference, he actually was not careless enough to choose a region to move to at random and without knowing much about it. Hoenn had actually been picked because all these so-called “disasters” Lars spoke of made it seem as if an interesting place, and although just about every single person he had known back in Unova had questioned him and told him going to such a dangerous place was a terrible idea, in the end, Tam did what Tam wanted.

Was he a thrill-seeker, then?

No one would have ever believed it, judging by the neutral and almost bored look he gave. One that existed in stark contrast with the words spoken:

”Yep, so I’ve heard. Sounds like a mess.”

But, was a mess not much better than monotony?
[break][break]
Now, what did get a proper reaction out of him was the mention of legendary pokémon. There was no awe, there was no wonder, but there was confusion and the furrowing of blond brows. ”Hmm… Not that I know of… How do you know if a pokémon is legendary or not?”

He knew the term, of course, but weren’t those just really strong and really rare pokémon? If so, maybe a battle against one would be fun…

As was probably obvious, Tam wasn’t one for myths and all of that…

For a pokémon who looks so small and cute, Clover sure can be heavy. It’s not that Tam isn’t aware of that fact, he sure as hell wishes his colleagues at Slateport HQ wouldn’t feed her so many treats all the damn time, but it’s as if every single time he picks up the Puppy Pokémon, he’s reminded of those facts. Should he start taking her for runs or something? Would getting her a treadmill be overkill?

Just as Tam thinks of all this, a loud sound resonates from among the nearby trees, causing birds of all kinds to fly out into the skies in surprise. Hell, even Clover stops wiggling, turning to look in the direction of the sound, her ears perking up when it rings one more time.

Tam turns too, and after squinting at the trees for a short moment, he sees it: a Bewear punching a trunk with all its might.

”Yeeeah… Better to avoid that one…”
[break][break]
And so, they continue walking to Rusturf tunnel.

Dressing warmly is not often an expectation in Hoenn, tropical as the region is supposed to be. Tam, however, had spent most of his life at a much different place, and even if most people would have felt a certain discomfort when stepping into Georgette Bluebottle’s property while clad in a Ranger uniform that is definitely not meant for snowy weather, the Unovan doesn’t really mind his surroundings. He will if he stays for too long, that much he knows for sure, but that is also something for ’future Tam’ to concern himself with, and at the moment, no more than an unnecessary worry he cares not for.

And so it’s calmly that he makes his way towards the spot where they said the gym leader would be waiting, and when looking up, it’s easily that those light blue eyes of his fall upon the problem.

”An Archeops? Hmm… That might work out…” He muses out loud. What is it with bird pokémon and making their nests at the most precarious spots possible? Especially an ancient and rare species like an Archeops. It’s no wonder they went extinct once.

It’s with this thought that Tam looks at the gym leader, realising he had not introduced himself. He gives her a nod out of acquired and practised politeness – the sort of thing his captain in Unova used to tell him to do.

”I’m Tam. Mossdeep Ranger HQ asked to come lend you a hand.” As made obvious by his uniform. What is not obvious, however, is that Tam himself is stationed in Slateport, not Mossdeep, and that he had only been in the area by chance. But, of course, he sees no point in bothering with explaining all of that.

Had it not been because of the way it violently smacked against the vending machine, chances are Tam would have never noticed the Meowstic no matter how much of a ruckus it made. Lux Defort’s Sirius, however, happens to be a force to be reckoned with, and where most would fail, the psychic feline manages to draw Tam’s attention towards itself despite the fact that the Unovan had been focused on something else entirely. Quite the feat, even if Sirius intended for it.

”Looks like your Meowstic’s hungry.” Tam tells the younger ranger, probably pointing out the obvious but still saying as much anyway. And, unlike his pokémon, Lux does return his attention to the problem at hand, and it’s soon enough that light blue eyes are once again looking at cans.

Where is it? Could it have snuck out without Tam realising as much?
[break][break]
”Yeah, my Ditto. It went in there, probably transformed into a can… It likes playing games like that.”
[break][break]
Or more like pranks, since it’s not rare for Tam to have to excuse the behaviour of the Transform Pokémon.

It’s then that, while looking at the vending machine, an idea comes to mind, and Tam turns his attention towards the Meowstic one more time.

Canines as Yamper may be, they’re the sort that is most often used for herding, not hunting. Anyone could have been fooled when looking at Clover, though, since it’s fearlessly and without hesitation that she runs after a Pidove when spotting it – even barking ceaselessly and loudly while at it. She makes one crucial mistake, however.

RIVALRY. Clover may have expected the Pidove to grow fearful and fly away, but Tam quickly deduces it must be a female of the species, because even though it does take off, it’s quickly that it turns in the air and attempts to attack his Yamper. Unovan as he is, he knows Pidoves even better than he realises.

”Clover, NUZZLE.”
[break][break]
It’s not a powerful attack, not one meant to cause the Pidove any real harm, but electric as it is, it does spook the small flying type and PARALYSE.
[break][break]
”Come on, let it be.” Tam grabs the Yamper before she can jump onto the helpless bird, caring little for getting mud on his jacket. He also doesn’t mind the way Clover licks his cheek, simply letting out a sigh before taking her where she won’t cause the Pidove any harm.

Tam is indifferent to a great many things in life. It could be argued that he has little care for most things, actually. He is, however, not indifferent to handsome strangers that greet him while clad in nothing other than shorts and a hat. Seems like coming to lend a hand at the ranch may have more perks than just some enrichment for dear Clover.

Still, whatever he may think of the man before him is not revealed by his ever so impassive expression, his brows only quirking just so slightly at Oswyn’s comment on his attire – as if he were considering the words of the rancher.
[break][break]
”Huh. You think so?... It’s more comfortable than what I usually wear.” He shrugs. These days, working at Slateport as he does, Tam finds himself having to wear a suit more often than not, and such being the case, he much prefers his ranger uniform.

And speaking of his uniform…
[break][break]
Even though he’s wearing it, it’s not like he’s actually on the job right now, no? Surely a drink wouldn’t hurt much…

”Sure, I wouldn’t mind a drink.” The response comes with ease, and it’s as it is spoken that Tam reaches for one of the green pokéballs (a Friend Ball) clipped to his belt. From it, he releases a Yamper that looks up at them, giving one excited bark and wagging her short tail.

”As for the Mareep, Clover here should be able to give you a hand with that. She likes herding.”
[break][break]
It’s as if the word itself brings joy to the Yamper; she spins in a perfect circle, chasing her tail before sitting down and barking one more time.

As luck would have it, Oldale lies all too close to the hustle and bustle of Slateport City, and that happens to mean that it's not rare for rangers stationed at the metropolis to stop by the picturesque little town on their way to this or that assignment.

As luck would also have it, one of these rangers happens to be Tam. Who, out of all pokémon out there, considers none other than a Yamper to be one of his closest companions and partners. Perhaps it’s also lucky that the attendant at the Oldale Pokémon Centre knows this, because familiar with the local rangers as she is, she was the one who mentioned @oswyn’s request to Tam when the ranger had stopped by.

Luckiest of all is the fact that he happens to have some free time.

”Hey.” Despite the urgency of the request, the Unovan looks all too calm when meeting the rancher by his barn, clad head to toe in the characteristic ranger uniform since he had happened to be doing fieldwork until now. Then again, couldn’t this also be classified as that? Unofficial fieldwork, perhaps.

”I’m Tam. Heard you need a hand with your Mareep.”

Soft white paws become marked by mud when the Yamper jumps into the nearest puddle, murky water splashing all over her tan fur. In retrospect, perhaps having her out of her pokéball when heading to Rusturf Tunnel hadn’t been the best idea; it had rained the previous night, and the remnants of it can be seen all over Route 116. In actuality, as Tam sees it, it’s too late to ruin her fun, even if it's always a pain to try to give the Yamper a bath.

The Yamper – or Dame Clover Cottonbottom, as his coworkers had dubbed her – barks enthusiastically while running from puddle to puddle, and Tam knows well that in the exhilarated state she’s in, there’s no point in telling her to stop.

He does no more than sigh, taking a sip from the soda can in his hands and continuing to walk down the muddy path.

”Lars.” The name was spoken tentatively, as if weighing what it felt like when said by him. To Tam, it was mostly a matter of growing accustomed to the change, since in Unova he had grown all too used to addressing other rangers by their surnames (those whose surnames he had bothered with remembering, that is). It took him all but five seconds to adapt to this change, and once those five seconds passed, he gave Laurence Anderson the response that was perhaps to be expected:

”Feel free to call me Tam, then.”

He could have probably seen that information in Tam’s own file, but Tam didn’t really think of this, nor of the fact that information regarding his training and time as a ranger was also among those pages.

The offer was accepted, taking a caramel square from the open tin once sitting down. A strange choice for a snack to enjoy while working, but the sweet taste of caramelised sugar was a pleasant one, and he quietly allowed it to melt in his mouth while considering the question asked.

”The standard. I was a ranger for a couple of years in Unova.” Obvious information, but it was then that an eyebrow raised just so slightly, his gaze holding that of the Head Ranger. ”Although I’m guessing ‘the standard’ doesn’t really apply to Hoenn, does it?”

Since, after all, Hoenn was and will always be, fucking crazy.

Being located in one of the largest, most populated, and most touristic cities in the Hoenn region, the Lilycove Ranger Headquarter has a tendency to be quite the hectic place. Rangers stationed in far-off towns often stop by on their way to assignments or to report to the office of Head Ranger Laurence Anderson, and it’s not rare to run into complete strangers.

To Tam, most rangers are complete strangers, by simple virtue of the fact that he has never been one to pay much attention to remembering the names of people he does not see in the day-to-day, and he sure as hell isn’t one to attend unnecessary parties and events when off-duty.

Those present at the break room are definitely strangers to him, and just as Tam always does with most strangers, he pays them little mind, although in this case it's because his attention is fixed on the vending machine.

Eyes the colour of cornflowers in bloom intently stare at cans of soda, as if searching for something.
