Does the fact that she questions if it’s a pleasure to meet him have to do with the whole Kalosian thing she has going on? Tam hasn’t met many Kalosians before, so he ponders on the matter for a second… But, of course, it’s only a second.

It’s a meaningless thing to think about, so it’s quickly that he brushes it off – his attention instead returning to the nest and the Archeops.

Unlike him, Georgette Bluebottle does actually ask a couple of important questions.

”Huh… Maybe they climbed using rock attacks or something?” He shrugs, since Archeops are, after all, Rock types. It’s a strange explanation for sure, unlikely too, but over his years as a ranger, Tam has come to learn that pokémon will do just about anything for the sake of what they think will ensure the safety of their young. A fact that, admittedly, could cause problems for him and Georgette.

”Yeah, we shouldn’t disturb them. We could put them to sleep, but I would still have to climb up there to g–”

A flash of red light makes it so Tam doesn’t get to finish the sentence. One of the green Friend Balls clipped to his belt opens without his intervention, and from it appears a bright-eyed Yamper that looks up at the gym leader. Her ears are perked up, and her short tail wags in excitement.

”Oh… Sorry. That’s Clover, she likes to help.”

Or, at least what Clover thinks would help, because sadly the barking with which she greets Georgette is unlikely to be very soothing for the Archeops and Archen.

Ah, so that’s what’s going on.

Tam sighs, and judging by his expression, anyone could probably easily assume that he’s bored. Which, to be honest, he kind of is, but that’s not the girl’s fault...

It’s just that this is not the first time he has had to deal with a member of Team Rocket, and it definitely won’t be the last. Usually, Tam doesn’t mind them much, but when pokémon are involved… Well, that’s when it becomes a matter he cannot and will not ignore.
[break][break]
”...Kay.” While his hands had indeed been in his pockets, they had been holding onto minimised pokéballs, and it’s from one of these green Friend Balls that a Snorlax is swiftly released to stand between the girl and the Zangoose. The huge pokémon looks down at the assailant, barely seeming to care for the way the CRUSH CLAW bounces off almost harmlessly against the thick skin.

From the other Friend Ball, a Yamper is released, and after taking a second to assess the situation, she begins barking at the thief – ears back, tail raised, and hackles up.

”How about you say sorry to the girl and get out of here? I’d really rather not deal with the hassle of going to the station…”

His demeanour lies in heavy contrast with that of the small electric type – crackling electricity mingling with each of her incessant and high-pitched barks.

In a place like Hoenn, late spring days make for good “nap under the sun” days, or at least that’s what Tam had come to learn over the years he has spent in the region. Is it a great idea to nap at the beach? Many would say it’s not, and they would also say to at least wear sunblock, but of course Tam doesn’t care about the opinions of most people.

There he is, enjoying his day off at Lilycove beach in his Yamper-patterned swim trunks. His Ditto rests by his side, and let me tell you; the little violet blob could probably make anyone believe it can photosynthesize or something along those lines, because it sure seems to also be really enjoying the sun…

Until a pair of fluffy paws land right on it, that is.

Sand splashes everywhere, and if that hadn’t woken Tam up, the displeased gurgling of his Ditto sure would have. Still, the ranger doesn’t look annoyed, and his surprise fades the moment he sees the Minccino.

For the most part, this was just parroting of the things Tam himself had been told when announcing to friends and family that he would be moving to the region. After all, few things bothered the Unovan, and summer’s heat could admittedly be one of them, but as if made of perfect contradictions, napping under the sun was also one of Tam’s all time favourite activities. Was he some sort of feline or something?

Right. A cartographer was a mapmaker, and they probably had been mapping Shoal Cave when going missing. Now that Lars made him consider it properly, it did seem a little odd, but then again…

”Eh… What if they slipped or something?” Tam shrugged dismissively, because as far as he was aware, most people seemed terribly prone to making silly mistakes like those. And it was slippery, mind you, but it thankfully wasn’t Tam’s first time dealing with conditions of the sort.

”Do you come here often?” He asked then, since it soon became clear that Lars seemed to know the area quite well.

It’s a two feet tall, almost four feet long, extremely soft Mareep plush, and truth be told, Tam doesn’t want it for himself, but for his Yamper. See, Dame Clover Cottonbottom (Yes, that’s the name of his Yamper, don’t ask) is extremely spoiled, and there’s little he wouldn’t do for the sake of seeing her wag her adorable little tail. Destroy a child at a game of Catch-the-Magikarp and potentially ruin her fun? You got it, Clover – he doesn’t even sweat it.

If the gamemaster looks at all displeased with his actions, Tam doesn’t even register it. Arms wrap around the Mareep plush, it being pretty much lifesize and as such definitely too big to hold under one arm. Kind of annoying, kind of inconvenient, kind of difficult to take all the way back to his home in Slateport, but he knows Clover will like it, so of course he doesn’t mind that at all.

Tam doesn’t notice the crowd gathering, he doesn’t notice the bets, and to be honest, he barely even notices the girl and her Luxray. What he does notice, however, is the Magikarp, and the fact that there’s concerningly less and less of them in the main tank.

Somehow, the girl has managed to keep up and come close to taking his prize.

Close, but not close enough to catch the last couple of fishes before he does.

”HA!” He hadn’t said a sound for minutes, but when he finally opens his mouth, of course it has to be just as heccatches the last of the fishes. It’s a yell: loud, victorious, and arguably far too ecstatic for a man who is competing against a girl who is only twelve. Tam doesn’t consider that, obviously. He came here to win a prize and win a prize he has.

And, when standing to go claim said reward, does he turn to look at the girl to check that her feelings aren’t hurt?

He hadn’t intended on being in Rustboro until this late, but it would seem as if the work of a ranger is never really over. His official assignments had been dealt with and he was on his way to take a Corviknight taxi back to Slateport City when he heard it; the chirping, ceaseless and desperate. Two Pidove had fallen from their precariously-located nest, too young to fly and with their parents being nowhere in sight. Naturally, Tam did what any ranger would do, and picking up both pokémon, he took them to the nearest pokémon centre.

Two hours later, nighttime has fallen.
[break][break]
Truth be told, Tam wants nothing more than to head home, but it’s then that a much different sound catches his attention. Voices. Threats. Something about a kid handing over a dragon.
[break][break]
Well, that doesn’t sound good at all.
[break][break]
There’s nothing heroic about his entrance, he just walks into the scene – hands in his pockets, clad in a ranger uniform, and wearing the most unfazed expression there is. He looks at the man, he looks at the pokémon, and then he looks at the girl. And, seeming extremely calm despite the tense situation before him, he asks her a simple question then:

”Is this guy bothering you?”

It’s important to confirm. Impulsive actions are not Tam’s deal.

Brine filled the air at the cavern, the scent of the ocean being tangible and ever-present even during low tide’s hours. It was a strange place to him, unfamiliar and different from everything he was used to, and apparently, the same could be said about most Hoennians.

From what he had been told, most people didn’t venture this deep into Shoal Cave; where the ice overtook the cavern and hung from the rocky ceiling in the form of sharp icicles. When they did, getting lost apparently wasn’t a rarity, and so it was that assignments like the one he had been given came to exist: find the missing cartographer.

A bit of a high-risk mission to be assigned as his first one in Hoenn, but the reality of it was that he was mostly here to accompany Laurence Anderson. And, of course, as should only be expected, the irony of a cartographer getting lost completely eluded Tam.
[break][break]
”...At least it’s better than finding someone lost in the desert.” He really didn’t look forward to visiting that part of Hoenn, and the cool temperatures of Shoal Cave were pleasant enough, even if he had to look for his parka before heading to the island.

Maybe one day in the distant future, when Tam has his own children, he will be merciful and let them win at silly games like these. Hell, maybe he’ll even help them and they’ll all have a great time with it. This particular kid’s happiness, however, couldn’t matter any less to him.

Right now, Eris Halla’s happiness is in direct conflict with his wishes.

Of course, such complex consideration regarding the feelings of another does not cross the ranger’s mind, but he does narrow his eyes when seeing that the girl is managing to keep up. That just won’t do. He puts down his net, rolling up the sleeves of his ranger uniform, and once he’s done and picks the net back up, the next Magikarp is caught within seconds.

A kid may have all the enthusiasm and determination in the world, but in the end, a kid is still a kid, and he sure is faster and stronger, and the way his tank fills up with Magikarp comes as proof of it.

Most people wouldn’t be big on the idea of ruining a kid’s fun. They would see her playing her game, back away, and let her enjoy herself.

Tam, though? Tam couldn’t care less that the kid is there. He wants the prize, so he’ll play the game and win, and if that ruins Eris Halla’s fun, well… that’s too bad for her. It’s not even that he doesn’t like children. The thought of how she might feel or how his actions might affect her just… completely eludes him.

Crouching down by the tank, it’s immediately that he makes his first attempt, ensnaring an unsuspecting fish with his net and releasing it into the smaller tank beside him. Is it the one the Luxray had been eyeing? Yes. Does Tam realise as much? No.

That much is inconsequential to him, and there isn’t even a call of celebration before capturing the second fish.

Why is there even a game like this at a ren-faire? Why is there a ren-faire in Hoenn to begin with? Tam is no history expert, but this sure doesn’t seem like the sort of place where any of this would be historically accurate…

Thankfully, despite Tam’s ever too calm and neutral demeanour, ’being quick on his feet’ happened to be something he excelled at, perhaps because with his lack of interest also came an unusual ability to be unfazed by most things in life. Everything has its perks, no? A silver lining and all that..

And yet, quick on his feet as he may have been, at that moment he found himself pausing for a few seconds – as if he really had to think if he had ever heard any tales of legendary pokémon or not. Which, admittedly, was rather crazy, considering the fact that…

”I grew up by Dragonspiral Tower. I always heard all sorts of stories about that place, some of them with strange pokémon…” There was a shrug, because all those stories had vague and fuzzy details in his head. He just never cared to remember. ”I’ve heard of Arceus
and all that. Probably know more legendary pokémon by name than the stories about them.”

There had been mentions here and there, especially after moving to Hoenn, but the lore surrounding such legends was something Tam cared little for. Their power mattered more.
