[break][break]"it's okay, june," she murmurs, pulling her in. the softness of her voice is juxtaposed by the glare she levels at the masked rocket over june's shoulder, challenging him to reach his hand any closer to his belt. [break][break]do it.[break][break]an echo of the command he'd given a moment before, reflected in the hardened expression on her face. she's not so indecisive, and neither is her ceruledge. she's not so naive, either, to believe any rocket wouldn't see the opportunity leveraged by june turning away. [break][break] "once we get back to hoenn, we'll get everything figured out," annalise promises, cradling the back of her head in her hand. a phantom force bubbles. perhaps to cleave howard slayte's hand from his wrist, perhaps to take them away before he can attack. "everything's just, like, really fresh for you right now."[break][break]and he's still here.

it's a pretty thought, harnessing enough power to prevent the destruction of hoenn's cities and towns. annalise knows this is an arms race. against team rocket. against the otherworldly threats that will inevitably come back to try and swipe both groups off the chessboard. she holds no illusions about legendary pokemon and the siege weapons they are capable of becoming. [break][break] but kyogre will do even more senseless damage on its own, her mind curls around the thought as they make their way down the hill. it's better in our hands.[break][break]illeana's hair shifts off her shoulder as she turns her head back to glance at her. annalise subconsciously reaches a hand toward the pokeballs clipped at her belt, fingers stilling over the metal of one capsule in particular. she had prepared, as asked. [break][break]"my mienshao knows detect, yeah." there's a click! as the ball is pulled loose, then rolled into her upturned palm. "i brought other pokemon, too. a meowstic with keen eye, a houndoom with odor sleuth, an iron leaves ... " [break][break]annalise trails off, knowing she doesn't have to list her whole team for the scientist to get the jist of her party. the pokeball rolls off her finger tips and her mienshao joins the search party in a flash of white light. [break][break]he pulls her out into the night air and admits his vulnerability to distant mountains, but she doesn't follow her gaze across his property. instead, she lifts her chin to look up into his face, brows furrowed sympathetically. the same irritating way people look at her, reflected in her own expression. [break][break]"it's really hard sometimes," she agrees, tentatively reaching out to rest a hand on his back. it's a testing of waters. "do you... want to talk about it?"

for a moment, as the dust settles, howard slayte looks no different than mint frost had, one eye peering at them through a shattered visor. her fingers curl into her palm, white-knuckled at the memory. he speaks. he speaks to her, yet she only hears another rocket trying to prey on their goodwill. [break][break]june sleigh pulls away from her and she sees the glint of silver as its drawn. it isn't aimed at her, yet her throat tightens all the same. she can see her own thirst for revenge reflected in the way june presses the barrel of the gun against his visor, but her questions ring hollow. [break][break]annalise hopes, as selfishly as she's ever had, that she will be fulfilled once she follows her own thread to its end. [break][break]"we're going to be fighting battles no matter what," she finds her voice, a scathing smoke that fills the chilly air in front of her face. "because of you and your org."[break][break]she might as well have something to defend herself with hangs in the air, the sentiment unspoken. a gun is a pretty tool, but nothing compares to having a god in her pocket. [break][break]her gaze moves from howard slayte to the gun, then she averts her eyes. if june plans on going all the way, she'll be the last person to try and stop her.

in the days trailing after, hypervigilance remains written behind her eyelids. the suggestion of movement, the sigh of the house settling — everything rouses her out of sleep. she teaches herself not to startle in the haze of half-consciousness, one hand lazily reaching out to graze against him, to remind herself that she's still in hoenn. [break][break]the bed shifts, jarring her awake, then hasty footsteps retreat away. annalise remains still, her arm drawn over her eyes. then, slowly, she removes her arm, blinking blearily as she falls into routine: her hand reaches out, palm settling first on the blanket and then on the pillow. [break][break]no matias.[break][break]he left me. [break][break]annalise snaps upright, sore muscles screaming in protest, and confirms the anxious thought by scrutinizing the dark. she swings her legs over the side of the bed and gets up in search of him, but just standing up is enough. her anxiety peters out as she approaches the open balcony door, drawn toward the moonlight and the silhouette clinging to the railing outside.[break][break]

annalise gets up, snow drifting from her shoulders and ice clinging to the tips of her hair. her ceruledge superheats itself, flames wavering with each bout of paralysis that courses through it, and melts the snowbank encasing them. everything seems to fall into place in slow motion: the hisuian pokeball slipping from june sleigh's fingertips, howard slayte taking her to the ground, the behemoth disappearing in a flash of red light. [break][break]the trick room fades and annalise feels this alien world correct itself. she starts to move, slow and clumsy and terribly human, liable to half-slide on patches of ice on her way to june. her world narrows. she doesn't hear their veiled opponent screams, or feel the cold as it races up her back. [break][break]she just sees june. and regieleki.[break][break]they make the difference. the anomalies of her life that let her wrest herself free of the ice as it starts to crystalize on her sneakers. [break][break]"i'm here," she promises breathlessly as she runs up, offering a hand to get june sleigh back on her feet. an electrical storm threatens overhead, just as it had when june had first told her about her promise to her dad. "get up, we need to go."[break][break]june holds all the power of this world in her hands — annalise has no doubts the masked rocket covets it.

relief washes over her as her ceruledge's blow connects, carving a wound into the regice. dynergy spits out like interdream mist, then the legendary pokemon seemingly powers down. it isn't respite, though — the ghost-type stiffens, limbs jerking as paralysis seizes phantom muscles. she looks away, taking stock of the
race across the battlefield. june sleigh is still forging ahead, but howard slayte is on his knees. [break][break]she's going to make it, she thinks, her hopes warm against the chill that ripples out to grab her bare flesh. [break][break]snowflakes drift past her vision, then the howl of a blizzard reaches out to freeze anything in its path. she wraps her arms around herself, but the cold comes for her, too. she feels its painful sting, then burning. [break][break]numbness comes next. or, rather, it should come next. she looks up and sees her ceruledge taking the brunt of the blizzard for her. its armor shimmers golden as it reflects a blinding zap cannon across its surface. [break][break]and as the attack lances out, this dark, miserable world is swathed in a violent clap of daylight.

june sleigh runs. howard slayte chases after. annalise feels the impulse to follow like a jolt of electricity through her, but another earthquake steals her footing and the illusion of choice vanishes as she stumbles over herself. she hits the ground, palms scraping against rough earth, and remains condemned to this piece of land that has not yet fractured, waiting out the aftershocks. [break][break]she lifts her head at the sound of her ceruledge's armor whining beneath the weight of regice's pin. howard slayte needs the golem, doesn't he? then she needs to subtract it from the equation.[break][break]"phantom force!"[break][break]the zap cannon forces her to turn her face away from the battle, starbursts popping behind her eyelids with each rapid blink. she turns back once the flash of light fades, to regice and the smoldering ground in front of it. to her damaged ceruledge, broken armor crackling with static, as it appears out of nothingness.[break][break] paralysis, within the confines of the trick room, imbues the swing of its blades with additional speed.

he knows her. [break][break]he knows her by name.[break][break]whatever relationship they have — had? — stays his hand in the critical moments when his regice could easily take them out of the sky. annalise doesn't know their history, she only knows june sleigh's rage. it guides the vengeful MOONBLAST that knocks howard slayte into the air, into the waiting arms of his pokemon. [break][break]a retaliatory BLIZZARD blows across the battlefield, buffeting her altaria. her wingbeats grow stiff and weak, desperately trying to slow their descent toward the ground. they land roughly and annalise tumbles off of the dragon's back, shivering from a bone deep chill. [break][break]she recalls her altaria, numb fingers skipping over the pokeballs at her belt, unfeeling. the world shudders beneath them all, commanded to splinter by june's garchomp. it's enough to know, without looking, that she's alive and well enough to continue screaming at their masked opponent. it's a rare moment where annalise just trusts, unburdened by the anxiety that june will get herself hurt. [break][break]june can do this, she just needs to focus.[break][break]"june!" [break][break]her ceruledge appears, bathing her in the radial warmth of its blades. she stands — or tries to, as much as the rumbling ground will allow. [break][break]"i've got him! focus on your promise!"[break][break]her lips continue to move, the command lost to the sounds of battle. her ceruledge melts into shadow and rematerializes before their foes, slicing toward regice with superheated blades.
