[break][break]an acrid smell hits her nose. burning cables, melting metal. june is the first to get her bearings and get back up. [break][break]"i don't know," she answers, breathless, as she stands. in the distance, lights lance out, then an explosion pops. her first, bewildered thought — that they're being attacked — feels less certain. [break][break]"i — yeah, let's go." [break][break]she releases her altaria and climbs onto her back. they're safer separate. [break][break]"be careful," she warns as the dragon takes flight. annalise doesn't need june sleigh's heroics, she needs her self-preservation. she needs her to run far away before some otherworldly invasion begins. she can feel it in her bones, the three-pronged war between league, rocket, and the collapsing universe itself. her leg is pulled away, both a deprivation and a disapproval. [break][break]"you won't take my place."[break][break]her palms hit the duvet, then she sits upright, lending credence to the sharpness of her voice with the abrupt shift in position. she's bristling, still, even as june switches her tactic to something gentle and dismissive. [break][break]"they will be back," she says, turning her face away, the bite in her voice thinning into anxiety. "we should've killed them when we had the chance."

the other times they'd encountered regieleki, it had been happenstance or they had been the ones being hunted. this time, they have experience, strategy, and an ancient-looking pokeball that june sleigh fumbles to catch after throwing it up in the air. the glitter of amusement in her eyes wavers, replaced with a flicker of confused concern at the sudden self-doubt that fills the dark.[break][break]"i wouldn't be here if i thought you weren't ready."[break][break]there's no hesitation to her answer. it surprises her to hear june, the girl who had ran out into a storm to try and catch the golem, start to get cold feet. it should be annalise, yet the ranger captain's voice brooks no uncertainty. [break][break]"you've been preparing for this forever, june. you even have a whole, like, strategy playbook, don't you? just don't miss your throw with that fancy ball when the time comes."[break][break]annalise elbows her as the warning passes her lips, playful. [break][break]

his fist connects with her stomach, blooming sudden pain through her side. this is nothing? she wonders, desperate, as she raises her arms to shield her face against a hit that might have broken her nose. she unravels quickly, panting, but paxton concordas remains reticent, his breathing controlled and movements tight. [break][break]she isn't sure how to get close enough to throw him down without receiving a few more beatings in return. instead, she keeps her face protected and tries to kick him in the leg. [break][break]overhead, the attacks connect, whine, then explode outward into a ripple of black, obscuring smoke. annalise's altaria flaps her wings, kicking up a HURRICANE to clear the air.

"you didn't fuck up," annalise says softly. she scoots closer to her houndoom — the dog rearranges himself with a rent-paying sigh — and grabs the hand grasping at her elbow, encouraging her up onto the bed with a gentle tug. "and you're not fucking up now, either."[break][break]but what is there to say? some things need to stay buried so deep that not even annalise can dig them back up. a war is coming. she can't afford to stop and let everything catch up to her now. [break][break]"silence is only awkward if you let it be, you know," she sighs out, laying back on her mattress, eyes trained on the ceiling. eventually her hands slide up, covering her eyes, the darkness behind her eyelids lending to clarity. [break][break]"i don't need apologies and i don't need to talk about it."[break][break]her breath pools in the back of her throat. [break][break]"but i do need you to be far away from hoenn when the people who kidnapped me come back."

[break][break]"you're right."[break][break]she reaches for his wrist and crouches down, trying to drag him down near the ground with her. she's familiar with this sequence of events from her mission with CALLISTA MOON: kyogre spots them, it destroys the cliff they're standing on, they're forced to fight back. MATIAS SILPH stops talking. annalise makes no attempt to resuscitate the conversation, transfixed on some whorl in the table as she mindlessly fills her stomach. she can feel his eyes on her, undressing her, but she doesn't raise her eyes or comment on it. [break][break]it's tolerable, in a way, compared to having THEO BECKETT watch her eat, making sure she'd consumed the poison necessary for their survival.[break][break]the silence breaks once she sets her spoon down. she takes a deep breath as he speaks.[break][break]"it already happened twice."[break][break]there's no bite to her voice, but she challenges him in a quiet, sad way. she presses a palm against the table, then the chair scrapes against the floor as she forces herself to stand. she looks down at him, briefly, as she picks up the bowl. "too much color for you?"[break][break]she recalls the first time june sleigh visited her office at the ranger hq and how she'd struggled to summon a compliment there, too. there's a desk in the room, but her guest takes the floor instead of the chair, reminiscent of the many times Rory Faust sits on her rug and complains about school and vaguely-alluded-to crushes. [break][break]as she sits on the side of the bed, her houndoom relaxes, loosening his posture. he sticks a snout out to sniff the extended hand, then draws his head back, aloof.[break][break]annalise draws her feet up off the floor, knees to her chest, and watches june from her perch. she tilts her head, brows furrowing as she tries and fails to do more than apologize.[break][break]"you're what?"

[break][break]her eyes follow him as he moves around the table, bowl in hand. it's set down in front of her and she looks down into its contents, feeling a wave of nausea as her body remembers hunger for the first time in a week. she picks up a spoon, pushing it through red, as he declares he won't go blond. [break][break]"why not? i thought you wanted to match?"[break][break]the tomato soup tastes bland, but she prefers it to the decadence of mochi. she moves spoon to mouth in the same thoughtless rhythm she had adopted in prison, swallowing without savoring, occasionally clacking metal against her molars.
